From the moment I learned from Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui that he would be performing
in his company’s next piece, I jumped at
the opportunity to both co-produce and
present it in our season. Since bringing
Larbi’s early work Foi to our stage more than
a decade ago, we’ve regularly showcased
his vast creativity through a number of
projects, continually being pushed by his
questioning mind. Larbi stands out as an
artist unafraid of any challenge; his work
is bold and provocative, personal and
sensitive. His own diverse background feeds
his curiosity, and he embraces his eclectic
tastes in music, styles of movement and
collaborative endeavours with intensity and
beauty. While Fractus V began as a short
work commissioned for the 40th anniversary
of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal,
it quickly evolved into a larger piece giving
place to nine different nationalities of dancers
and musicians who, together, explore the
drama of “natural fractures” that propel
human communication and information.
It’s been thrilling to watch this work grow as
Larbi’s creative world continues to expand.

En apprenant que Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
danserait avec Eastman, sa compagnie, j’ai
saisi l’occasion de coproduire le spectacle
et de l’inscrire à notre programme. Après
avoir accueilli Foi, voici plus de dix ans —
l’une de ses premières créations —, nous
avons présenté nombre de ses projets,
constamment aiguillonnés par son esprit
fureteur. Larbi se distingue par son audace.
Son œuvre hardie, voire provocatrice, est
aussi personnelle et sensible. Il abreuve
sa curiosité aux sources multiples de son
patrimoine, tirant intensément parti d’une
pluralité éclectique de musiques et de
mouvements, dans un but ultime :
la beauté. Courte pièce créée sur
commande pour le 40e anniversaire du
Tanztheater Wuppertal de Pina Bausch,
Fractus V a rapidement pris de l’expansion
et réunit désormais des danseurs et
des musiciens de neuf nationalités
différentes qui explorent ensemble ces
« fractures naturelles » d’où jaillissent
la communication et l’information. Quel
plaisir d’être témoins de cette évolution
parallèle à l’expansion de l’univers créatif
de Larbi. Bon spectacle!

About the Company À propos de la compagnieFounded in January 2010, Eastman was
set up to produce and spread the work of
artistic director/choreographer Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui. Cherkaoui’s work provides the
audience with a vast array of projects and
collaborations, ranging from contemporary
dance, theatre, ballet, opera and musicals
to other forms of performance. His non-
hierarchical thinking on movement, body
language and culture is the basis of his
artistic approach. Set in his native harbour
city of Antwerp (Belgium), Eastman forms
the central point for all of Cherkaoui’s
work. Eastman is resident at deSingel
International Art Campus (Antwerp).
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is associate artist
at Sadler’s Wells (London, UK). As of
September 2015 the choreographer is
artistic director of Ballet Flanders.
Since its foundation in 2010, Cherkaoui
created, amongst others, Babel (words),
Play, Rein, TeZukA, Puz/zle, 4D and
Fractus V under the wings of Eastman.
Eastman also coordinates all the work of
Cherkaoui for other organizations.

Word from the Choreographer Mot du chorégrapheIn May 2014, I presented a short creation
for the 40th anniversary of the Pina
Bausch’s Wuppertal Tanztheater. Fractus
was a trio in which I wanted to discuss
the fracture between the individual and
society. The performance was inspired by
the texts of the Jewish-American linguist
and political philosopher Noam Chomsky.
If I translate Chomsky’s ideas for myself,
I gain the insight that: ‘The only way the
individual is able to protect himself against
political and social propaganda, is to study
all the information available. Each day we
are bombarded with news that tries to
influence our thinking. It is a very intensive
exercise to filter everything and to resist
believing what we are told to believe.’
Looking for primary movements on the
edge of the tribal and folklore, this short
performance raised the desire for more. In
Fractus V, I want to deepen the questions
on information and manipulation;
propaganda versus a more ‘objective’ and
factual approach. I also take as a starting
point ‘liberty of expression’. Certain taboos
are often broken these days and certain
truths are undeniable but we still miss
the capacity to digest them or place them
in the right context. Because of that we
are often pushed in an ‘us versus them’
mentality. We have the information, but
we don’t know how to use it. Questions I
ask myself: ‘It seems certain freedoms
still need to be framed? How neutral
can our thinking be? How much do we
identify ourselves with the causes of the
injustices in society? Where does personal
responsibility start or end?

de Pina Bausch, j’ai créé en mai 2014 une
courte pièce intitulée Fractus. Il s’agissait
d’un trio dans lequel j’ai voulu montrer que
l’individu est en porte-à-faux par rapport à
la société. La pièce s’inspirait de textes du
linguiste et penseur politique juif américain
Noam Chomsky. En incorporant les idées
de Chomsky à ma propre réflexion, j’en
arrive à cette conclusion : « L’individu ne
peut s’armer contre la propagande politique
et sociale qu’en examinant minutieusement
les informations. Nous sommes submergés
chaque jour de nouvelles qui tentent d’agir
sur nos pensées ; filtrer tout cela et ne pas
croire tout simplement ce qu’on nous fait
ingurgiter est un exercice d’une grande
intensité. »
Pendant la recherche de mouvements
primaires, d’une danse informe proche
de l’expression tribale et folklorique, il
est devenu évident que ce bref spectacle
était un premier pas vers une création plus
aboutie. Dans Fractus V, je veux approfondir
les questions liées à l’information et à
la manipulation, l’opposition entre la
propagande et une approche plus
« objective » des faits. Un autre point de
départ est la « liberté d’expression ». À
travers elle, sans doute, de plus en plus
de tabous sont brisés et certaines vérités
nous assaillent ; pourtant, il nous manque
souvent la capacité d’absorber ces vérités
concrètes ou de les situer dans le contexte
adéquat. C’est précisément pour cette
raison que nous sommes malgré tout
poussés à la pensée antagoniste du
« nous et eux ». L’information est présente,
mais nous ne savons pas comment

attempts to control and to manipulate
the media, resonates with my need as an
artist for a space to constantly reinvent
my own identity. This necessary process
of renewal doesn’t happen gradually. It
happens through radical fractures and
being able to let go of the past. Evolution
is the combined result of an endless series
of small and big revolutions. Every day
is a rite of passage, a point of no return.
Fractus V is a creation with five, very
different, contemporary dancers. The
French virtuosic dancer Dimitri Jourde has
a circus formation. The American Johnny
Lloyd comes from a Lindy Hop background
and is originally a musician. The Spanish
dancer Fabian Thomé Duten started his
career as a flamenco dancer with Joaquin
Cortés, and Patrick Williams Seebacher /
Twoface earned his credits in hip hop and
breakdance battles. I, myself, enriched
my own fluent dance language through
exchange with different dance traditions
for the past 15 years. We all have different
dance backgrounds but still put our
movements in dialogue with each other.
And we share the desire to create an
interesting community, both on stage and
in daily life. The live music continues this
philosophy. I collaborate with the Japanese
percussionist and singer Shogo Yoshii, the
Korean singer and musician Woojae Park,
the African singer and musician Kaspy N’dia
and the Indian, virtuosic Sarod musician
Soumik Datta. They are all experts in their
own music traditions but also curious for
cross-fertilizations. They are all musicians
with whom I already collaborated. Nine
different nationalities and outspoken
identities will dialogue to come to an
intense, dramatic and fluent whole. Fractus
V stands for the natural fractures, which are
necessary to grow and become stronger.

individuelle ? » Fractus V est créé par cinq
danseurs contemporains peu ordinaires.
Le danseur virtuose français Dimitri
Jourde s’est formé aux arts circassiens.
L’Américain Johnny Lloyd, qui est musicien
à l’origine, vient de l’univers du Lindy
Hop. L’Espagnol Fabian Thomé Dutena
fait ses débuts professionnels comme
danseur de flamenco chez Joaquin Cortés,
tandis que Patrick « TwoFace » Williams
Seebacher a fait ses armes dans le hip-
hop et les « batailles » de breakdance.
Moi-même, j’ai tenté au cours de ces 15
dernières années d’enrichir sans cesse
mon langage chorégraphique fluide à
travers des rencontres avec des formes de
danse plus traditionnelles. Même si notre
formation à la danse n’a pas été la même,
nos gestuelles se rencontrent ; l’envie de
constituer une communauté captivante,
tant sur le plateau qu’en dehors, domine.
La musique interprétée sur scène participe
à cette philosophie. Je travaille avec le
percussionniste et chanteur japonais
Shogo Yoshii, le chanteur et musicien
coréen Woojae Park et le joueur de sarod
virtuose indien Soumik Datta. J’ai déjà
collaboré à plusieurs reprises avec ces
musiciens, tous spécialistes de leurs
propres traditions musicales, mais
également toujours à l’affût de fertilisations
croisées. Neuf nationalités affirmées
s’engagent dans un dialogue afin de forger
un ensemble intense, prenant et fluide.
Fractus V exprime la rupture naturelle
qui est souvent nécessaire afin d’en
ressortir plus fort.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s debut as a
choreographer was in 1999 with Andrew
Wale’s musical, Anonymous Society. Since
then he has made over 30 choreographic
pieces and picked up a slew of awards,
including two Olivier Awards, two Ballet
Tanz awards for best choreographer
(2008, 2011) and the Kairos Prize (2009)
for his artistic vision and his quest for
intercultural dialogue. Cherkaoui’s initial
pieces were made at Les Ballets C. de
la B. — Rien de Rien (2000), Foi (2003)
and Tempus Fugit (2004). He undertook
projects that both expanded and
consolidated his vision; D’avant (2002)
with artistic partner Damien Jalet at Sasha
Waltz & Guests company and zero degrees
(2005) with Akram Khan. He has worked
with a variety of theatres, opera houses

Cherkaoui was based in Antwerp as artist
in residence at Toneelhuis, which produced
Myth (2007) and Origine (2008). In 2008
Cherkaoui premiered Sutra at Sadler’s
Wells. This award-winning collaboration
with Antony Gormley and the Shaolin
monks continues to tour the world to
great critical acclaim. After his first
commissioned piece in North America,
Orbo Novo (Cedar Lake Contemporary
Ballet) and a series of duets such as Faun
and Dunas with flamenco danseuse María
Pagés (both 2009), he launched his own
company Eastman, resident at deSingel
International Arts Campus (Antwerp).
Spring 2010 saw him reunited with
choreographer Damien Jalet and Antony
Gormley to make Babel(words) which won
an Olivier. That same year he created Rein,
a duet featuring Guro Nagelhus Schia and
Vebjørn Sundby, as well as Play, a duet with
Shantala Shivalingappa and Bound, a duet
for Shanell Winlock and Gregory Maqoma
as part of Southern Bound Comfort. In
2011 he created TeZukA and Labyrinth (for
Dutch National Ballet). In 2012 he created
Puz/zle, gaining him a second Olivier.
That year he also collaborated with Joe
Wright on his film Anna Karenina, for which
Cherkaoui helmed the choreography. 2013
saw the premiere of 4D and genesis 生长
(Eastman), Boléro (co-created with Damien
Jalet and Marina Abramović, for the Paris
Opera Ballet), and m longa (Sadler’s Wells).
He reunited with Joe Wright to co-direct
A Season in the Congo at The YoungVic.
In 2014, he created Noetic for the
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Mercy
(from Solo for Two) for Natalia Osipova
and Ivan Vasiliev, which they performed at
the London Coliseum and he directed his
first opera, Shell Shock, for La Monnaie,
and Harbor Me, one out of three new works
commissioned by the L.A. Dance Project.

In 2015, Cherkaoui directed his first
full-length theatre production Pluto
based on the award-winning manga
series by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi
Nagasaki at Bunkamura in Tokyo. He
also choreographed a new Firebird for
Stuttgart Ballet. He was movement
director for Lyndsey Turner’s Hamlet
starring Benedict Cumberbatch at the
Barbican Centre in London. In the same
year, Cherkaoui created Fractus V, in
which he also performs, and assumed the
role of artistic director at the Royal Ballet
of Flanders in 2015, while continuing to
work for Eastman, his company. He is also
associate artist at Sadler’s Wells, London,
guest artistic director of the National Youth
Dance Company, as well as dance director
of Festival Equilibrio in Rome.
DIMITRI JOURDEDancer
Dimitri Jourde, born in Paris in 1975,
was pushed towards the circus school
of Annie Fratellini at the age of 9. Initially
taken as a playground, he discovered
the world of circus and acrobatics. After
starting high school, he discovered hip
hop, breakdance and everything that goes
with it. He went on to study at the École
de Cirque de Rosny-sous-Bois and the
Centre national des arts du cirque (CNAC),
where he discovered contemporary dance
and capoeira, and followed some classes
with Peter Doussaint. He graduated in
1998 with the show C’est pour toi que je
fais ça directed by Guy Alloucherie and
participated in the creation of the company
« Le Cirque désaccordé ». In 1999, he
joined Kubilai Khan Investigations with
whom he experimented and invented his
own vocabulary. He created: S.O.Y. (1999),
En janvier 2015 a lieu la première

DIMITRI JOURDEInterprète
Né en octobre 1975 à Paris, Dimitri est
poussé dès ses neuf ans vers l’école du
cirque d’Annie Fratellini. Il prendra goût au
cirque et à l’apprentissage de l’acrobatie,
qu’il aborde d’abord comme un espace de
jeux. Il fait son entrée à la grande école
où il découvrira le hip-hop, le breakdance
et tout ce qui va avec. Il entre à l’école du
Cirque de Rosny-sous-Bois puis à celle de
Châlons en Champagne, communément
appelée le CNAC. Là, il découvre la
danse contemporaine, la capoeira et suit
l’enseignement de Pierre Doussaint. Il en
sort en 1998 avec le spectacle C’est pour
toi que je fais ça, mis en scène par Guy
Alloucherie, et participe à la création de la
compagnie Le Cirque désaccordé.
L’année d’après, il se joint à Kubilai Khan
Investigations, avec qui il expérimente et
invente son propre vocabulaire. Avec eux,

Poko dance (2001), Mecanica Popular
(2002), Gyrations of barbarious tribes
(2005). With François Verret he created
Chantier Musil (2003) and Sans Retour

JOHNNY LLOYDDancer
For 15 years Johnny Lloyd has been
traveling the world as a Lindy Hop and
Charleston teacher. His genres expanded
to include most of the dances coming from
African American dance culture including
the various forms of Hip Hop. In 2003 he
created his first full length solo Accidental
Artist. After self producing several more
dance productions, he started receiving
support from the German Culture Office
to create large scale dance productions
in coproduction with Kampnagel in
Hamburg. In 2007 he was noticed by
the popular German contemporary
choreographer Antje Pfundtner. He also
started choreographing shows or music
videos for German Hip Hop artists like
Fettes Brot, Die Ärtze, Sammy Delux
and Juli. In Germany, he created over 10
feature dance productions, all of them

Mecanica Popular (2002), Gyrations of
Barbarious Tribes (2005). Avec François

for Eastman in the Opera Shell Shock

In 2015, Johnny started the production
process for the full version of Fractus V. In
2014 Johnny created the contemporary
hip hop piece Traces, in collaboration
with Andre Grekhov and Parktheater. The
next piece, entittled Other Tales from the
Underground premiered at Parktheater in
September 2016.
FABIAN THOMÉ DUTENDancer
Fabian made his first dancing steps at
age 7, at the Catalina Gómez school. In
1999, he continued his training at the
Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza
in Madrid, graduating in Spanish and
Flamenco Dance in 2004. He continued
his career with the best companies in
the country and worked with masters
of Spanish and flamenco dance such
as Joaquín Cortés, Rafael Amargo and
Lola Greco, among many others. In
addition, Fabian began to create his own
choreographies. In 2006, he presented
his first show at the Andalusian Festival in
Saint-Jean-de-Luz (France). In 2009, he
wins the 2nd Prize for “Solo Choreography”
and 1st Prize for “Photo Scene” for Así me
siento at the XVIII edition of the Spanish
and Flamenco Dance Choreography
Contest held in Madrid. In 2011, Fabian
decided to form his own company: F.T.
Dance Company with Desde el Sofa, a

him to work as a dancer and choreographer
on his production in Macao: TABOO. Fabian
returned to Europe in 2013 and had the
opportunity to work in the Elephant Black
Box Company with Jean Philippe Dury,
Sharon Fridman and Carlos Fernandez
Fuentes. In 2014, he presented Entre
Sombras, which embodies a language
about the corporal block. He won the
Price of the Best Interpretation at the
International Contest Burgos/New York
(July 2014) and has been invited to several
festivals: Mas Danza (Canarias Island),
Talent Madrid, Festival Zinegoak (Bilbao),
Tel Aviv, etc. In February 2015, Fabian was
part of the latest production of Arantxa
Sagardoy and Alfredo Bravo – Sibil.la – in
Switzerland and in June 2015 he joined
Fractus V.

Patrick Williams Seebacher (best known
as Twoface) was noticed on the hiphop
scene in Germany using his exceptional
techniques in urban styles such as
popping, tutting waving, etc. He then
started participating in dance battles.
These contests meant the start of his
international fame as a dancer and as
an artist. He won international dance
battles such as SDK, The Notorious IBE
and World of Dance and is currently a
much sought after juror. Coming from
an urban background he frequently got
commissioned for commercial jobs in
F.T., avec Desde el Sofa, un spectacle de
danse et théâtre. Cette même année, il
remporte le second prix de chorégraphie
au 20e Certamen Coreográfico de Danza
Española y Flamenco de Madrid, avec
Del juego a la Pelea (extrait de Desde el

WOOJAE PARKMusician
Woojae Park is a composer, music director
and geomungo artist. He pushes the
envelope while subverting tradition and
convention. He challenges the limiting
definition of the geomungo as a traditional
instrument, creating unique techniques
such as his stroke method and bow use.
In 2014, Park’s solo album, “Geomungo
Extension”, was released. Its eclectic
music revolutionized geomungo music
and elevated it to the world stage with
four songs — Passivity, Elation, Morphosis
and Caress — displaying Park’s unique
technique that transforms the geomungo
from an instrument you pluck into one
that reverberates. Although the geomungo
is known as a traditional instrument,
Woojae Park cooperates with renowned
contemporary dance choreographers,
such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Nam Jin Kim,
and Seung Yeup Hong.
SOUMIK DATTAMusician
Soumik Datta is a British Indian composer
and virtuoso Sarod player — 19 stringed
fretless instrument. Dubbed ‘British Sarod
Maestro’,Soumik (pronounced Sho-mik)
has composed and released six albums
through his own label. He first made his
mark with his debut record ‘Fretless’
which showcased him as a magnificent
souvent appelé à faire des apparitions

musicaux, mais, très vite, il préfère les

SOUMIK DATTAMusicien
Britannique d’origine indienne, Soumik
Datta (prononcer « shomik »), que l’on

British Council, Soumik a fait des tournées

Joss Stone et Shankar Mahadevan, faisant
revivre l’antique sarod sur les scènes du

SHOGO YOSHIIMusicien
Shogo Yoshii a fait partie du célèbre
ensemble de taiko nommé Kodo. Apprenti
au Kodo Apprentice Centre en 2003, il en

Outre le taiko, Shogo joue des
percussions métalliques, de la flûte de
bambou et du kokyu (violon japonais).
Il participe aussi à des spectacles de
danse. En 2010, il s’est joint au projet
Babel (words), chorégraphié par Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui et Damien Jalet, en plus de
diriger Dojoji et d’y jouer comme musicien,
parmi l’ensemble de flamenco Arte y
Solera. Sa composition originale Sora
figure dans un manuel du cours primaire
au Japon. Il participe aussi au spectacle
Noetic, de Cherkaoui, et à la tournée de
Fractus V.
Indian classical Sarod player with a rare
melodic awareness. Soumik was trained
by Sarod legend, Pandit Buddhadev Das
Gupta. His charity Soumik Datta Arts
is chaired by Sir David Green, KCMG. In
2014 Soumik shines as a soloist for the
world’s first contemporary Sarod concerto
(commissioned by the BCMG), and as a
composer as he rescored Oscar award-

epic Goopy Gayne Bagha Gyne for the
Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Supported
by the British Council, Soumik has toured
internationally, presented his music at TED

Shogo Yoshii was a member of taiko
performing arts ensemble Kodo. He

On stage, he is featured on taiko drums,
metallic percussion, bamboo flutes, kokyu
(Japanese violin) and in dance pieces. In
2010, he joined the musical ensemble of
Babel (words), choreographed by Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet. That same
year, he was music director and performer
in Arte y Solera’s flamenco piece, Dojoji.
His original composition Sora is used in a
textbook for Japanese elementary school
students. He is also involved in Cherkaoui’s
performance Noetic and currently touring
with Fractus V.

KASPY N’DIAMusician
Kaspy N’dia graduated in 2010 in
musical art at the Institut National des
Arts in Kinshasa. Until 2012, he worked
in Kinshasa with Croisade Nationale
Drépanocytose (CND) in raising awareness
for the sickle cell desease. Kaspy is
currently a researcher at the Centre
d’Etudes et de Recherches sur les Valeurs
Africaines (CERVA/RDC) and also coach
at L’Oeuvre de Suivi, d’Encadrement et de
Protection des Enfants de la Rue (OSEPER)
(The work of monitoring, mentoring and
protection of street children). In 2013,
he plays in A Season in the Congo by
Aimé Césaire, directed by Joe Wright
and co-directed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui,
and in genesis 生长, from the same
choreographer.
JASON KITTELBERGERRehearsal Director
Jason Kittelberger began performing
at the age of three at the Draper School
of Dance, and School of the Arts where
he studied dance, acting, and musical
theater. He continued his dance education
at the North Carolina School of the Arts,
where he graduated with a BFA in dance
performance. Kittelberger has performed
with the Rochester Ballet, Carolina
Ballet, Hubbard Street II, and Cedar
Lake Contemporary Ballet. Aside from
choreographing music videos and concert
dance he also has been in movies such as
The Adjustment Bureau. Since 2014 he has
been working with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui,
as a dancer in Shell Shock and m longa,
but also as rehearsal director/assistant
choreographer on Firebird (Stuttgart
Ballet), Pluto (Bunkamura), Harbor Me
(LA Dance Project), and currently at Ballet
Vlaanderen and on Fractus V.
KASPY N’DIAMusicien
Kaspy N’dia obtient son diplôme en art
musical à l’Institut National des Arts
