ON THE COVER

Television personality Kate Rodger is well known for her movie reviews and celebrity interviews. This month EastLife asks the woman who has lived in some of the world’s most vibrant cities, yet still regards Howick as ‘home’, about her role as a film reviewer and entertainment reporter – see page 6.

rotorua

Hi everyone,

Labour Weekend has come and gone and we all know what that means – the Christmas countdown has begun with local malls already putting up decorations and social calendars filling fast with festive appointments.

It really has put me in a good mood because of late I’ve been grumpy – about red light runners at the intersection of Ti Rakau and Edgewater Drives.

Usually I have no real gripe when a motorist catches the ‘orange’ just as it changes but I do object to the countless number of cars that blatantly drive through red, yes red, lights at Edgewater Drive shops. It’s just so dangerous.

The offenders are mostly motorists travelling from East Tamaki towards The Plaza. At this junction there is quite a distance from the white

stopping line, past the Edgewater exit, then over a controlled pedestrian crossing to the other side.

Yet, just as cars are exiting into Ti Rakau Drive, and school students or elderly residents are stepping onto the crossing, someone whizzes through often going no further than the queue halted on the other side.

There has been talk of red light cameras in the future and I would welcome one here. I am past being tolerant. In fact, the other day when I blew my verbal top, my passenger was quick to accuse me of road rage, telling me I was just as bad. Well, I was not. I merely voiced an expletive or two and put no one in danger.

We condone outrage about many things in society especially when proprieties are offended. Yet we condemn rage (I am not talking actions here) over such blatant

and reckless offending as to put lives and property (ie vehicles) at risk. Perhaps the nice officer who occasionally parks at the intersection of Botany Rd and Te Irirangi/Ti Rakau Drives, might spend a bit of time down the other end handing out tickets. I’ll give you a wave!

Now that’s got that off my chest, I shall enter into the spirit of goodwill and get cracking on my Christmas shopping – you too I hope.

See you next month,

Seeing red...

eastlife | interview

Your present role has been described as your dream job – is this still true and what is it that makes you love it so much?

It really is still true! I am now combining motherhood with work after the surprise arrival of my son Max (now 11 months old). I’ve been back at work since he was 6 months old. I have such a supportive hands-on Baby Daddy that I have still been able to travel away for interviews and film premieres – it’s been great getting parental advice from the likes of Sandra Bullock! And there is nothing quite like the feeling of burying myself in a dark cinema watching movies all day.

Who is the most famous person you have interviewed and who has been the most interesting?

There are of course degrees of fame according to the fans concerned. When I interviewed Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart from Twilight they were the most talked-about people on the planet. But when it comes to long-term and well-deserved fame, I suspect Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are certainly up there, with Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and Sir Peter Jackson.

To date what has been the best and the worst movie you have seen?

Now that’s SUCH a hard question! Rather depends on my mood to be honest – but always lurking near the top of my Favourites List is definitely Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, usually followed by Star Wars: A New Hope. My worst movie is anything starring Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider together.

Is New Zealand’s culture sufficiently reflected on screen and what directions would you like the New Zealand film industry to take?

I do think our stories are being told on the big screen and I love that those stories are now winning at the

box office. I also love that they have become so much more reflective of our diverse cultural makeup. Sione’s Wedding, Boy, My Wedding and Other Secrets, all represent different parts of being Kiwi and all such an excellent accessible watch.

Do you judge New Zealand films in a different light from Hollywood blockbusters and how do you deal with viewers who knock your views?

We can’t help but judge our own differently – I wouldn’t be honest with myself, or you, if I said I didn’t judge New Zealand films differently from the latest Hollywood offering. Just being Kiwi automatically enables us to relate better to our own stories (or judge them more harshly!), therefore giving us a different experience than someone from beyond our shores. But when it comes to rating them for review purposes, it’s very important to me that I judge them alongside any other film on offer – it would be disrespectful to our filmmakers not to do so. We have matured so much as a cinema-imbibing nation; the cringe factor has well and truly gone. When it comes to readers’ views, I love the way movies prompt such different responses. It’s a reminder we are all individuals with our own tastes and passions! I almost prefer animated discourse on a film where we are both in disagreement – far more interesting!

Away from the cinema screen and the world of entertainment/movie celebrities, what is your favourite form of relaxation?

Right now, with an 11 month old in the house, my only chosen form of relaxation is SLEEP!

If you could become head of broadcasting for a day (or a week) what changes would you make?

I would pay me heaps more money? I would also put much more money into local film and television drama production.

If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Jack Nicolson (to tell ribald Hollywood stories), Ryan Gosling (to flirt with), Audrey Hepburn (to just be with Audrey).

You spent several years in both London and New York, would you consider going back to live/work in either of those cities or elsewhere overseas?

London is my second home (after Howick) and I love visiting. It’s such a vibrant cultural epicentre and will always, without fail, charge my batteries but after 8 years living there, I wouldn’t want to live there again. New York on the other hand – if I won Lotto this week the first thing I would do? Rent an apartment in the

East Village and ship Max and my Baby Daddy there for a year!

Your family is still very much a part of Howick and has been for all of your life – do you still consider this district home or is Howick just a special part of your past?

Howick will always feel like home and will always personify my childhood. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and I have loved watching it mature into a cosmopolitan village full of life. I visit my Dad as often as I can and love taking Max back to my home turf. My mother Pauline is buried beside the Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in the heart of the village. She loved Howick more than any of us. So, whenever I drop over Stockade Hill, the sea stretching out before me as I head down Picton Street, it will always feel like coming home.

WITH Kate Rodger10TENIt could be said KATE RODGER’S role as entertainment reporter, TV3 Film3 reviewer and host of Reel Late with Kate, has taken her from hometown Howick to ‘infinity and beyond!’. But for all the encounters with overseas ‘stars’ she remains fiercely proud of her local roots and of homegrown movies.

Long-time Pakuranga local, Dr Jim Salinger, agrees that simple facts are plain for all to understand but in the case of global warming, as with the winds of politics, analysis is crucial.

“You probably do [need a weatherman] to interpret the deeper meaning of climate change so we can be prepared to deal with what’s in store for us all,” says Jim.

A pioneer of climate change research, the editor/co-writer of a new book, Living in a Warmer World, says his passion for the subject grew from the ground up.

“When I was little I was fascinated by the veggie garden. When my parents gave me a maximum/minimum thermometer I began recording temperatures, built a climate station, installed a rain gauge and kept a weather log,” he says.

“Gardening is great. I’m never disappointed; I don’t mind when it’s dry, pelts with rain, it’s hot or cold; unlike the share market, it doesn’t matter if the climate goes up or down!”

During his university years, Jim seemed destined for medicine; however the winds of change took him in a different direction.

“I could have gone to medical school and I spent four years conducting medical research, but when I wrote a paper on climate, everybody said, ‘Jim, are you sure you’re doing the right thing?’ So I went down that route instead.”

After studying at Otago University, Jim pursued his PHD in Climate Science at the University of Victoria in the 1970s. This included study at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England.

“Back then, people were carrying on about the Northern Hemisphere, records weren’t that good and there were stories of an impending ice age.

“When I arrived at UEA we started putting global temperature records together properly and saw there was more to it. I discovered warming was occurring in New Zealand,” he says.

“I didn’t have any prejudices, we weren’t talking about global warming then; I just wanted to find out what was happening in our region.”

In 1994, Jim moved to Auckland where he used his divine-ing knowledge to locate a new place to hang his hat.

“We settled in Pakuranga for a mix of reasons – if you look at the climate it is actually sunnier and drier in the east of Auckland. I’ve studied rainfall patterns around Auckland and it does depend on where the rain is coming from whether it’s better or worse here but we love it.”

A highlight of Jim’s career came when, together with Al Gore, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for work on climate change in 2007.

“There were a lot of authors, approximately 2,500, but it was wonderful to be a part of and receive recognition.”

While global warming may be a tempestuous subject, perhaps the most turbulent times for Jim occurred when he was controversially sacked from the National Institute of Weather and Atmosphere (NIWA) in 2009.

“I was let go for unauthorised media contact. Before the appointment of a new CEO, I had always been entrusted to talk about climate and the weather with the media, over the period of 25 years. For some reason, the new CEO didn’t want me to do it.

“There was a media storm of biblical proportions when I was let go! The Saturday Herald wrote in its editorial ‘Sacking of Salinger a Step Too Far’. There were even questions in the House,” Jim says. “It was a clash of personalities but that’s the past and I’ve moved on.”

Looking to the horizon, Jim is busy with the release of Living in a Warmer World and other research projects.

“I’m working on a glacier paper – calculating how much ice has been lost since the European explorers first arrived – and also on South Pacific clouds and winds. I’ll be

writing a paper on what’s happening with climate extremes, focusing particularly on the loss of frosts.”

Last year, Jim was the visiting professor at Stanford University and next year will be the visiting scholar at the University of Tasmania, with the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Science.

“I’m now semi-retired, but I still conduct a lot of climate research,” he says. “I view scientists like old soldiers, they never die, they only fade away!”

Global warminG not just hot air

Climate expert, Dr Jim Salinger, prescribes prevention rather than cure when it comes to our environment. However, after decades studying climate change, his new book, Living in a Warmer World, seeks to help readers understand how the planet is changing and its effect on us all.

Jim says leading experts in various fields contributed to the book.

“It’s about what has happened as the globe has warmed – looking at rainfall, sea levels, glaciers, biodiversity, crops, livestock, fisheries, viticulture and more – and what is likely to happen in the future.

“While there are plenty of texts for the experts on the subject of climate change, we wanted to write something that goes into some depth and has some substance, but could be understood by the layperson.”

Although the book highlights some alarming statistics from shrinking glaciers to rising sea levels, Dr Salinger does have a prescription for enduring the changing of the world.

“The linkage is there. The globe is much warmer than it’s ever been in human history. Climate change has huge effects, be it on livestock, crops, fisheries or health,” he says.

“But there are a lot of little things we can do, from energy saving and insulation, to using public transport and renewable electricity.

“Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.’ It’s up to us to make the difference. We need leadership from the top, and support from the grassroots. We must let leaders know this is what we want.”

To be in to win a copy of Jim’s book, see page 22.

Higher climesBob Dylan said: “you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.” However, as JON RAWLINSON discovered, to ensure we’re not left blowin’ in the wind, it pays to prepare for our planet’s changing climate.

The globe is much warmer than it’s ever been in human history. Climate change has huge effects, be it on livestock, crops, fisheries or health.”

While 1.87 metres does not a giant make, James Arlidge has stood head and shoulders above many during a career that led him from Pakuranga to represent Japan at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He says, while some players in Japan may be shorter in stature, they are colossal in their determination.

“In Japan, they don’t have the same natural size so body position is very low. I know guys who were surprised at how they were getting their knees and ankles taken out!

“Japanese rugby players do everything at 100 miles an hour and are massively fit; they work and train hard so it’s a fast game.”

James began playing rugby for Pakuranga United at age six and went on to represent Auckland, Northland,

Otago, the Blues, Highlanders, New Zealand Barbarians and New Zealand Maori. Despite an impressive start, he chose to pursue options abroad, joining NTT Docomo Kansai in 2004.

“I was offered a job and thought it would be an interesting challenge. It promised a great experience for my wife, Anna, and I and we were keen to head overseas,” he says.

“You definitely earn more money than you do playing in New Zealand, that’s for sure, but the money’s not as big overseas as some people think it is. The attraction was more about the chance to experience other cultures and see the world.”

After a four-year stint in Japan, James moved to the United Kingdom, playing first for Newport Gwent Dragons and later Nottingham R.F.C.

But a midstream call from an All Black icon took him back to both the Land of the Rising Sun and the Land of the Long White Cloud.

“When John Kirwan called and asked if I’d be interested in joining [the Japanese international team] I was excited. The chance to play test rugby for a country that I’d grown to love made me proud and I was also thrilled that Kirwan was interested in me playing,” he says.

Although he knew selection for Japan – on residency grounds – would effectively put an end to any chance of representing the All Blacks, James carries no regrets about the decision.

“I had been away from New Zealand for years and I guess those [All Black] dreams die when you leave these shores.

“As a kid you watch the All Blacks and the Haka – and think you’re pretty good at it! – but I was quite pragmatic. You do your best and if you’re not picked, you’re not picked. So I have no real regrets about

leaving or not playing for the All Blacks. It was just something that had passed me by.”

Back home for the Rugby World Cup in 2011 James donned the Cherry Blossom, rather than the Silver Fern.

“It proved a highlight, particularly our first game against France in Albany in front of a vocal crowd including loads of friends and family,” he says.

James played in three of Japan’s four games, making a big impact in the first game but missing selection for the clash against the All Blacks.

“Initially I was disappointed, but coaches make decisions based on what’s best for the team. We were playing Tonga days later, which was a big match and I guess there was more chance of beating them. It would have been a massive thrill to play

against the All Blacks, but it wasn’t to be.”

On hanging up his boots, James and family left his last posting with Nottingham in the UK to return to New Zealand in June.

“I’d been playing rugby for quite a long time and it was time to retire. It wasn’t an easy decision to leave Nottingham, it’s a great place and we had a good group of friends, but our son Niko starts school next year and the grandparents are pretty keen to see him and Koby (1) grow up so it made sense,” he says.

Coming almost full circle, James can often be seen these days at his old stomping ground, Bell Park.

“I’m very fond of Pakuranga United and was thrilled to see them win the Gallaher Shield,” he says. “I’ve spent a bit of time down at the club since I’ve been back. My brother, Gareth has been playing as well, so I’m certainly a fan.”

James concedes his allegiances are now mixed when it comes to international rugby. Speaking to him last month, he was looking forward to the November 2 All Blacks, Japan clash in Tokyo.

“I’ll be cheering the Japanese boys for sure! It’ll be near impossible for them, but I hope they go well, at least.”

It’s a numbers game

Frankly, it’s hard to be perfect. All Black prop Ben Franks, was downhearted when Hawkes Bay won the Ranfurly Shield in September, mistakenly thinking his team was a point behind rather than a point ahead.

However, former Pakuranga United and Japan international first five, James Arlidge says during his career and since, he has always been sure to play by the numbers.

“Personally, I was always careful to know what was happening, but I think we first fives know the score all the time anyway; not so sure about props, though!” he quips.

Putting numbers on the board has been a priority for James during a distinguished rugby career, and since returning to New Zealand earlier this year, it’s a trend that’s set to

continue, albeit in a different arena.

The Auckland University Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Property graduate now works for financial services company, Deloitte.

“We look after small to medium businesses, preparing financial statements, tax returns and business advice,” he says. “It’s something I’ve always been interested in. I’m pretty keen to become a chartered accountant and this is a good environment in which to achieve that.

“When I left school, rugby wasn’t my main focus but then it took off, so my career took a back seat. I think it’s hugely important for sportspeople to plan for a life after sport. However, if you’ve played for a long time, the transition can be tough although any form of study will show willingness to work afterwards and having a degree is going to help.”

To ensure he was fit for the cut and thrust of finance, James undertook refresher courses.

“There was a stage when I couldn’t remember what papers I’d done, let alone what was in them! I’ve done some courses, just to refresh my memory. There’s a lot that comes back, but things change too. The added study has certainly helped.”

James believes the competitive environment of professional rugby will help him in his new career.

“I think there are skills that work for both. Dealing with people, time management, being motivated in achieving goals, all are useful. As a rugby player you need to learn these as well, so all of those things are transferable into business.”

I’ll be cheering the Japanese boys for sure! It’ll be near impossible for them [to beat the All Blacks] but I hope they go well, at least.”

James’ new career with Deloitte puts him on a new career high.

Creativity can be all-consuming for carver, Mark Jones. Twists and turns of smoke, the curve of an ear or the grain of timber constantly inspire him to pull the starter cord on his chainsaw and start a new work of art.

His imaginative drive is insatiable and what others may see as an old tree stump , he sees as a potential hideaway for children, a face or a curvaceous three-dimensional doodle that begs to be touched.

“Years ago I wanted to carve an old tree stump in Cockle Bay and another on farmland in Whitford but they never eventuated. At last I’ve found the perfect place and project and everything is coming together.”

At the entrance to Hawthorn Dene Historic Country Café in Botany Road, Mark is carving The Grandfather and creating quite a buzz.

When his Stihl chainsaw rips into action you can almost feel the testosterone stirring up the neighbourhood and men come wandering along to see what’s going on.

Mark made the first cut into the trunk, stretching three metres above the ground, on his mother’s birthday, Sunday, September 29.

When the weather co-operates he’s working on the sculpture from Tuesday to Saturday until January 31,

2014 which is his father’s birthday.

“Most of my work is made for displaying indoors so, in carving The Grandfather I’m learning as I go along.”

Mark grew up in England and wasn’t a big fan of school where he spent most of the day dreaming or doodling. He had a hard time because he stuttered and his survival strategy was to keep quiet.

When he left school he could barely read or write but he loved working with wood. In 1984 he started making rocking horses for esteemed British company, Stevenson Brothers.

Mark’s claim to fame was carving rocking horses for the late Princess Diana and Princess Beatrice, and he was involved in the making of a 12-horse carousel for the Sultan of Brunei – just to mention a few.

He carved in his spare time and Mark also developed his artistic skill with an electric chainsaw and other power tools. His creations are smooth, detailed and they bear no hint of the machinery that carefully yields such fine workmanship.

Before he left England Mark spent two years crafting The Doodlewood Chair, a mystical, three-metre masterpiece that would look right at home in a Peter Jackson movie but

still has no fixed abode. It’s a little like Mark, who has moved around Howick and currently resides in a temporary man-shed on a Papakura farm.

He cooks with one gas hob and covers the cost of rent by feeding the pigs each day before he heads to Botany to work on The Grandfather.

“I’ve achieved a lot over the years and I want children and teenagers to see what you can do if you put your mind to it. Life can be tough and knock you back but you have to follow your dreams and make things happen.”

However, dreams and doodles often go on hold while Mark does odd jobs

It’s best not to interrupt Mark Jones when he has a chainsaw in his grasp but the local artisan downed tools to tell his tale to JACKIE RuSSELL.

here and there to put dinner on the table but The Grandfather is finally the huge project he’s searched for to give to the community.

Mark carves smaller items to earn a dollar and some are currently exhibited at A Piece of Work Gallery and Uxbridge Creative Arts Centre.

A Creative New Zealand grant is helping him survive while he works on The Grandfather.

His generous spirit is as irrepressible as his imagination and throughout the years Mark has donated a rocking horse to Starship Children’s Hospital for fundraising and most recently he donated chairs to Habitat for Humanity.

One was stolen in a cheeky and soul-destroying theft. The chair sold on Trade Me and men fronted up with their truck and collected the chair. The problem was – they weren’t the rightful owners and the unique chair was never seen again.

Before commencing work on The Grandfather, Mark spent Saturdays at an outdoor studio at Bot Pots, Botany South carving and demonstrating his skill. He now has a student who is learning under his [Mark’s] patient guidance.

Art lovers may also have caught Mark in action at Arts Festival Out East 2012 when he entered the sculpture symposium and in October this year he was a guest judge at Eastern Inspirations’ Artscape at Howick.

When The Grandfather is completed Mark will be tackling three massive macrocarpa stumps donated to Habitat for Humanity in Ormiston Road, East Tamaki.

“It’s a long shot but the final carving may go to Habitat for Humanity in Los Angeles for them to auction. Of course, I’d love to have a go at another tree but I’ll need to keep making rocking horses, fruit bowls and mirrors in my workshop to keep myself fed.”

Nanette Cameron’s design influence goes far beyond the hundreds of students she has taught over the past 40 years.

It reaches into homes and buildings across the nation and overseas. Her teaching of interior design principles and her encouragement of students to use their imagination to develop and expand their skills and overall design philosophy have carried to all quarters of the arts arena.

Some would call her inspirational; others an institution. And, indeed, she is both. Diminutive in stature, she is as slim as she was 50 years ago and her contemporary dress moves with the times as does her ability to grasp and appreciate new directions in interior design, architecture, the visual arts and life in general.

While she appreciates the past and its influence on the present, her focus is on the future. But she is savvy enough to recognise that many trends come full circle – “sometimes several times over” – and some move only in small increments, a whole decade passing before real change is noticeable.

“For example, the Milan Furniture Fair doesn’t always feature dramatic shifts in style but then, suddenly, 10 years down the track, one sees a total evolution in design,” she says.

And no one could accuse Nanette of being slow to accept change. She occupied her Pakuranga home for the best part of 50 years. Yet, when the time came to downsize, she embraced a move to the city.

“I just love the vitality of living in Freeman’s Bay,” she says. “I can walk to the city, the cinemas, the art gallery, Ponsonby and more. There is so much happening, I just love it.”

And now at an age when some people might be easing up on work and travel, Nanette does neither.

She is at Te Tuhi most days of the week and makes at least one overseas trip every year, either to a new destination with challenging design concepts or to a country where she has warm memories. Most trips include delving into wider design trends which may encompass anything from textiles to glass.

Nanette has visited the Milan Furniture Fair a number of times and still takes interior design tours for her graduated students to Melbourne and Sydney. “These are an inspirational annual event which enables students to see cutting edge design, the result of years of meeting the top architects and designers,” she says.

The design school which remained

independent for more than 40 years is now under the umbrella of the Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts with James McCarthy its director. However, Nanette is still involved, her love of imparting knowledge and communicating, keeping her at the forefront of her field.

Ask her where she sees interior design at present and she replies: “It comes in two aspects – style and technology. For example, lighting, an important part of any building, has made giant advances and today, is a combination of art and technology.”

Interiors, she adds have reached a stage where rules no longer sway and people are free to show their individuality and mix things up – sentimental objects from the past with the best of new ideas.

“A touch of the quirky is the new influence and this is best illustrated by the avant-garde Dutch company, Mooi, whose display at the 2013

Masterly displayreceiving the 2013 resene award for lifetime achievement was testament to interior designer and former pakuranga resident Nanette Cameron’s contribution to interior design.

Now, an exhibition Nanette Cameron: Objectspace Master of Craft, further recognises her achievements and her influence as an educator, practitioner, advocate, and commentator on interior design as well as being an influential conduit between interior design and the worlds of architecture and the visual arts.

the centre of the exhibition, which includes works from Nanette’s private collection and new works, is a dining room created around current directions.

daughter, film maker and costume designer Kirsty Cameron, interior designer and stylist, Katie lockhart and producer Vivienne stone have assisted in preparing the exhibition, which will feature at Objectspace, 8 ponsonby rd, until december 17.

Milan Fair was outstanding but definitely quirky.”

interestingly, Nanette was one of a small band of women who worked tirelessly to establish what was the pakuranga Community and Cultural Centre (now te tuhi) and later the iris Fisher Gallery within the centre.

Her early classes weren’t about training designers, but aimed at giving women the confidence to decorate their own homes and expand their horizons.

Over time, the scope and calibre of the courses developed and, as a result, Nanette has trained some

of the country’s most prominent interior design consultants.

Her own career began with a Home science degree, then on travelling to london, she revelled in a vastly different world of design. On return to home she worked for New Zealand’s first interior design firm, Hurdley’s of auckland.

“i also wrote interior design articles for a number of magazines during the ’70s and ’80s,” she says, but is quietly dismissive of the suggestion that she is quite extraordinary.

yet everything Nanette has done suggests she is just that. Her specialist knowledge is staggering, she retains unfettered enthusiasm for the arts and she warmly admits she still loves the involvement with students.

“it gives me enormous pleasure to travel and to research upcoming trends and even greater joy at being able to share the outcomes. i’m not ready to give up yet.”

The Auckland Town Hall was packed to the gunnels with politicians, members of local iwi, family and friends of newly elected council members, a large media contingent and a smattering of overly vocal members of the public.

It was my first council swearing in ceremony, and one where I couldn’t help wondering beforehand about the reception the mayor would receive after the hype of the past couple of weeks. Nevertheless, I was excited by what lay ahead.

Invited to attend the event by Howick councillor, Sharon Stewart, who has been a pillar of strength, support and commitment to the people of Howick and surrounding districts for many years, I felt truly privileged to be there.

Guests arriving at the Great Hall were greeted by the sound of the organ followed by an amazing performance of Fanfare for Auckland by the Auckland Philharmonia brass and percussion sections.

The next part of proceedings was a welcome to the mayor and councillors. Delivered in Maori, the more than 30-minute welcome seemed far too long; its conclusion

prompting sighs of relief.

Before the meeting could be officially declared a council meeting, Len Brown was required to pledge orally, and in writing, his oath and allegiance to the office of mayor.

Unfortunately, this was marred by a barrage of shouting and heckling by a small group of protesters seated towards the back of the hall. However, Mayor Brown seemed totally unfazed by the group and went on to deliver a flawless maiden speech which followed the lines of his election campaign vision.

It was clear from the applause that the tide had turned for him. His speech, worthy of an Oscar in my mind, showed he was well and truly back at the helm. However, I think we will all be watching this space to see if there is a mutiny aboard the HMNZ Brown.

A music interlude by Sistema Aotearoa, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Young Achiever Olivia Francis and Auckland Choral was

a great prelude to the swearing in of the 18 newly-elected council members.

As each took to the stage and read the oath of allegiance it became very apparent as to which side each councillor supported. They seemed more like a sports team than an elected body of politicians with centre lefts, centre rights, defenders and the

opposition all amongst the fray.

A rendition of the New Zealand national anthem completed the formal part of the evening before councillors and their guests adjourned for light refreshments ending what, I can honestly say, was a very memorable occasion.

We were then privy to a quick tour of the Town Hall, which included being whisked past the door of the now infamous Ngati Whatua Room on our way out after an evening which left me wondering whether this council will provide a winning performance or suffer that sinking feeling.

Mayor ‘sworn’ inAttending the first meeting and swearing in of the new Auckland Council last month, EastLife correspondent NICK NEBEN reflects on an event which played out like the announcement of a sports team, with centre lefts, centre rights, defenders and the opposition all amongst the fray, set to the tune of barracking fan-atics!

There is not a lot to be said for General Sir George Cooke (1768-1837) for whom Howick’s Cook Street is named.

He served throughout the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-97) in Flanders and Holland and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel at its conclusion. He was a major general during the Battle of Waterloo (1815) where he lost his arm in battle. He died, unmarried, in 1837.

Presumably the ‘e’ was dropped sometime after the Howick street’s naming in the 1850s. Of course, some people have assumed the street to be named for Captain James Cook who lived in the same time period as those other men immortalised in the district’s thoroughfares.

Although Captain Cook had a naval background, he was recognised for his navigational and exploratory ability rather than greatness in battle and Howick’s Cook St was not named after him.

Perched on the corner of Cook Street

and Selwyn Road is the All Saints Anglican Church, the second oldest church in New Zealand. Today, All Saints Anglican Church is also the oldest building in south Auckland, initially prepared for St Stephen’s School in Parnell but deemed to be more urgently required in Howick.

The prefabricated timber was numbered and transported by boat to Howick Beach and carted up the hill on carts pulled by bullocks.

In his journal, Bishop Selwyn wrote,

‘We set our hearts upon receiving them [Fencibles] on landing, with the House of God prepared for their reception… It is with some satisfaction that the church was the first house completed in the village.’1

The first service was on Sunday, November 21, 1847, six days after the first Fencible settlers arrived in Howick. The Rev Fisher recorded that ‘many were unprepared, as no notice was given, however a number were able to lift their hearts and voices in praise and thanksgiving to God.’2

Why All Saints Anglican Church? All Saints Day was the nearest Saint’s day, and so Howick’s first church, today a prominent landmark carries the story of her past into our future.

With thousands of childcare networks around the country, standing out can be as tough as finding a needle in a haystack. However, it’s a different story for one local ‘stem’.

Home-based childcare and educational organisation, Stems FROM HOME recently proved it has what it takes to stand head and shoulders above the other straws in the bale as shown by a glowing report from the Education Review Office (ERO).

Praised by the national authority for its rapid progress, the young

company was recognised for its high expectations, effective communications, and well-established systems.

These have inevitably resulted in a sense of belonging and ownership for children, families and Educators who have developed strong relationships through this close-knit community.

Thanks to the clear vision of founders and close friends, Emma McAlister and Stephany Wofinden, the report

is recognition of the energy and commitment they have invested in the business.

“We’re simply over the moon with how much we’ve achieved in such a short time and it will continue to motivate us to set the bar higher,” says Emma.

“When the Educators are happy, the children are happy and so are their families – and the children are at the heart of everything we do.”

of approval‘Stem’Local childcare organisation Stems FROM HOME is destined for greater heights, having passed its recent national review with flying colours. The report said: “They are focused on providing a high quality service and developing a strong community of learners that includes children, parents and Educators.”

HigH praise for stems from Home

Cockle Bay mother Sandie Harris joined Stems FROM HOME as an Educator two years ago while it was still in its early stages.

She says her journey has been an enriching one from the beginning.

“Steph and Emma worked quickly, efficiently and were really professional. They’re so lovely and you can sense their passion. They fully believe in what they do and want to do the right thing for the kids.”

Originally from a corporate background, Sandie wanted to be involved in her children’s lives and admits she could not have done it without the support of Stems FROM HOME.

“The weekly groups and activities are so refreshing and the support, knowledge and experience I receive from Steph and Emma is immense. I really enjoy what I do and I can see myself doing this for a long time.”

Experienced globe trotters usually have travel traps sussed. They know about travelling light and don’t pack six pairs of high heels, an iron and a plastic bag filled with ‘must have’ tea bags – one or two, perhaps!

They know that more water, less alcohol on a flight is a good thing. They also know sitting is tiring and a regular once around the plane relieves the boredom, keeping circulation going too.

Most have a list of useful travel tips because no one wants to lug two heavy suitcases up stairs or pay hundreds in excess baggage. What’s more a small backpack as hand luggage will keep hands free.

Travel insurance, walking shoes and sunscreen go without saying yet every trip throws up another, “if only I hadn’t done so and so” or “wish I had packed such and such.”

So, here are a few extra tips which may help those booking early bird specials for overseas travel next year:

• Don’t wear jandals on the plane. In the unlikely event of an emergency, sturdy shoes will help protect feet from heat or sharp objects.

• Keep a hoodie handy. A hooded top is excellent value when travelling. Slip up the hood to provide warmth and to shut out light or noise if you need a kip on the plane. Comfortable and practical, they wash and wear well.

• Leave the guidebook at home. Instead, photocopy pages that relate to your travel then discard when no longer needed. This will save weight and space in your bag.

• Saw your toothbrush in half. This saves precious space. The extra few centimetres gained can be used for those guidebook pages!

• Pre-book an airport lounge. When facing a long flight and lengthy stopovers, using a VIP airport lounge with its quiet environment and complimentary drinks, food, magazines, even WiFi, will help you relax and stay fresh.

• Pack a sarong. It is light and multifunctional – colourful evening skirt, a wrap on the beach, a party shawl, a cover if chilly, a towel, a curtain, a baby sling, even a bandage.

• Purchase a kindle. These are a travelling book-lovers dream – scores of books all in one lightweight apparatus. No more packing weighty tomes to get you through a long flight or sleepless hotel nights.

• Learn some lingo. Carry a small phrase book and memorise a few sentences of local languages where English isn’t spoken.

• Look before leaving. When vacating a chair or couch at the airport, a café, theatre, park seat or bar, turn round and ensure nothing is left behind. Glasses, coats, cameras and wallets are often casualties of not checking before leaving.

• Take a pack of cards. Such a small but useful item to wile time away on a flight or when waiting for connections, sitting on a bus or just

watching the world go by.

• Pack muscle-relieving cream. There are many anti-inflammatory creams but Tiger Balm rates well when sore muscles need soothing or insects must be kept at bay.

• Don’t plan everything. Limited time frames often mean exact planning but allow for some flexibility – unplanned days can result in lasting and fond memories. Travel more slowly too; you’ll see and learn more.

• Just go! If you have a strong urge to travel start saving and go for it! Don’t delay. Don’t defer. Just do it, otherwise you’ll regret it when age or commitments mean you can’t.

• Keep your cool over unseasoned travellers who don’t stand back from the luggage belt so everyone can see bags arriving or those who block escalators so others can’t pass. There will be a million incidents to get short over. Don’t! We are all capable of being thoughtless or just too tired to be polite. Be patient.

On my third visit to Fiji and the second staying at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, I didn’t expect any real surprises. However, accompanied by husband, daughter, son-in-law and two pre-school grandchildren, I saw the hotel from several perspectives.

On the day we arrived, we heard the news that the Sofitel at Denerau had just won Best Fijian Property at the 2013 HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence in Sydney. Naturally, I was expecting an exemplary vacation experience.

Now, I have no idea about the criteria for the awards but, after our seven-night stay, I did have some questions. Don’t get me wrong. The Sofitel Fiji was a beautiful property where the facilities made it easy to blob out!

In my mind, the pool area wholeheartedly deserves its countless accolades as one, if not the best, in Fiji.

Three restaurants plus The Patisserie (coffee lounge-cum-café), complimentary laundry, daily

poolside barbecue, an array of on-site shops, various lounges and a spa are among the attributes that obviously contribute to this hotel’s five-star rating.

An easy holiday option – convenient and spacious with excellent amenities – the warmth of greetings from staff members and the genuine delight they showed when encountering children, any time of the day, impressed me. This attitude did the resort proud.

However, I saw a number of ways in which the Sofitel could be improved. In particular, some of the rooms are beginning to show their age.

Keeping in mind it was ranked 5-star, I decided to ask guests from a variety of age groups what they thought. By concentrating on four different groups this is what I discovered:

Parents with young families:

Safe environment, fabulous pool, great water slide and staff wonderful

with children. Excellent grounds, plenty of room for children to play; beach at our doorstep too!

Family rooms had pros and cons – big thumbs up for the semi-separate bunk rooms but adult space in family rooms was judged a little cramped (double bed only for parents); bathrooms need a spruce up.

Kid’s Club – 9am-9pm with two-hour, half day or full day sessions – very reasonably priced but programme could be much more challenging and offer more activities. Some children soon became bored.

Family dining – mixed reactions. Our personal package gave it as ‘children dine free’ in Lagoon Restaurant. At no place did it say ‘with paying adult’. We assumed our two youngsters could dine early at The Lagoon allowing the parents to then put them to bed and pay for a babysitter while they ate at any of the on-site restaurants.

Not so, they were told firmly children could only eat free if accompanied by a paying adult. At $F92 per adult, this restaurant was beyond our young family’s budget so, like some other parents, they opted to eat elsewhere at a cheaper price, sometimes at the outdoor restaurant Salt but often down at Port Denerau where there were several inexpensive venues. Dining aside, the overall verdict was an excellent family setting and “not so flash that we worried about our children damaging anything”.

from the 20-somethings:

Fabulous pool – perfect place to laze around all day, swim and sunbathe. Great cocktails, cheap eating at Salt and from the poolside barbecue. Pretty good bars, service “average” (lots of laughter about ‘Fiji time.’) and from some: ‘Not much to do here at night’; ‘We go down to the port in the evening’; ‘Trying to find out about local night clubs”. ‘Loves’ included: love the jet-skis, love the spa, love the sun, love the slushy margaritas.

There’s been so much written about Fiji that many Pacific travellers could be forgiven for thinking they know it all. But during a recent week-long holiday on Denerau Island, HELEN PERRY found even old haunts can turn up new experiences.

Over 50s

General appreciation of choices – eat in or dine out (the latter mostly at the Port); liked opportunities to relax around the pool, play golf, take a day trip e.g. cruise to an island, go fishing, dinner cruise, orchid gardens. Plenty of room to avoid over eager children, reasonable happy hour but not always as many people as expected so somewhat quiet; nothing much to do at night – TV terrible and not a lot to generate a party mood in the evenings. Nice to see beds turned down at night.

The PerfecTiOnisTs (all age grOuPs):

Rooms nice but not sensational; baths need re-surfacing; cleaning haphazard, (sometimes done in the morning sometimes late afternoon);

all towels not always replaced even when put out, delivery of water/milk and toiletries sporadic; restaurant service often very slow and delivery of wrong orders not uncommon, can’t fault the pool.

TO sum uP:

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa suited our family extremely well and this time our luxury oceanview room was both quiet and perfectly placed to see the wedding chapel. We watched several

weddings take place over the week – very romantic.

My favourite restaurant on site was V (could be a bit expensive for some but the food was outstanding – the best at the resort). I also enjoyed the poolside barbecue (daytime only) and the Patisserie, which I discovered for the first time on this visit.

Defintiely a prime location but ‘best property in Fiji’? I’m not sure if I entirely agree with that.

In my mind, the pool area wholeheartedly deserves its countless accolades as one, if not the best, in Fiji.”

A short five day tour of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi has given me a thirst for more of this culturally diverse country where it is difficult not to be moved by its past conflicts or captivated by its French influences, bustling markets and places of natural beauty.

Our small group flew Singapore Airlines to Vietnam, the flight marked by exemplary service and many small niceties.

With no time to waste after arriving in Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon), we were soon on a walking tour of this energetic city’s historic landmarks which included Notre Dame Cathedral, the Municipal Theatre, the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum.

The latter was a deeply moving experience, a graphic photographic display proving too emotional for a few people. Yet, it was agreed this extensive documentation of the

Vietnam War should not be missed. The impact of the war was further evidenced when we visited the Cu Chi Tunnels once known as the Iron Triangle. With more than 250 kilometres of low, narrow tunnels, on three underground levels, linking to houses and buildings above through tiny hatches, the network provided a remarkable insight into the Communist determination to repel the Americans.

After such an overwhelming experience we welcomed the chance to relax by dining out and enjoying a vast range of delicious Vietnamese food. Although street food was not recommended, there were many outstanding restaurants in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi – the fabulous food is one of this country’s attractions. We even participated in a Vietnamese cooking class which was loads of fun.

At this point, I should say accommodation was excellent –

Vietnam has done much to ensure visitors have all the home comforts and anything upwards of a three star hotel is sure to please.

On day three of our visit we headed for Hanoi, a vastly different city from Ho Chi Minh. There were many green spaces and plenty of evidence of the region’s French past.

The Old Quarter, with its trading streets and ‘tunnel houses’ was a buzz of activity. At the other extreme was the infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’, Hanoi’s former central prison, now redeveloped but where one wing has been turned into a museum.

Over the next two days we took in tree-lined boulevards, shopping and more places of interest including the simple house on stilts from which Ho Chi Minh or ‘Uncle Ho’ as he was affectionately called, ruled Vietnam until his death in 1969.

On the final day of our tour we

travelled three hours to Hon Gai, gateway to the stunningly lovely Halong Bay where we were treated to a four-hour cruise around the bay.

This natural wonderland was a refreshing change from the teeming city life we had become accustomed to – for example Ho Chi Minh City is home to five million scooters and if that wasn’t enough of a cultural shock, the driving was. We soon learned how to cross a road with both commitment and caution!

But back to our cruise – what a way to end our time in this land which has suffered a lot but where the people are warm and friendly. All I can say is, there’s no place like Vietnam!

The lure of VietnamDONNA CHURCHES from Harvey World Travel Botany, is a consultant with 15 years industry experience. She has travelled extensively but a recent trip to Vietnam revealed a fascinating new world, where a war stretching more than four decades ago has left a profound mark. Here, she recommends Vietnam to travellers seeking to experience a rare cultural encounter.

I wonder how many places in the world still pass the ‘street map test’. I encourage you to try it when next visiting a city, or maybe right here in Auckland.

Walk to a corner (any corner) of an intersection, get out your street map and study it intently. How long does it take for someone to stop and offer their help? In Oregon…under 10 seconds.

It’s just the way the people are in Oregon – friendly, helpful, courteous and passionate about their home state and their city, They’re keen to help visitors get that inside view of America’s best hidden secret.

I was lucky enough to host 10 Kiwis in Oregon this past August. Turns out, Oregon really isn’t that big of a secret after all – Australia and New Zealand represent Oregon’s 5th largest overseas market, with thousands upon thousands of visitors coming through each year.

Being positioned between San Francisco (California) and Seattle (Washington) or Vancouver, Canada, it’s just so easy to get to Oregon from New Zealand with airlines such as Hawaiian Airlines or Air New Zealand.

So what makes the place so special other than the people? Let’s start with the natural wonders!

Firstly, Crater Lake in southern Oregon offers a depth of blue only possible in the world’s deepest lakes, so vast you could literally drop the city of San Francisco right into it.

Oregonians call their coastline “The People’s Coast”, as every inch of it is accessible to the public.

Sand dunes, rocky cliffs and stretches of untouched white sandy beaches await. Act like a local and light a bonfire on the beach, roast some S’mores (marshmallows sandwiched with chocolate and Graham Cookies), and watch the waves roll in.

Central Oregon boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each and every year and is an adventure enthusiast’s Mecca. Head out east to the Columbia and Snake Rivers,

which have carved out some of the deepest gorges in the USA, including Hells Canyon.

The Columbia River Gorge itself is home to hundreds of waterfalls and hiking trails. Hood River is the windsurfing capital of North America, and the aptly named Painted Hills are one of Oregon’s National Monuments.

For the more urban-focused visitor, Portland is a wonderfully quirky city. With its ‘Keep Portland Weird’ slogan, Portland celebrates culture, creativity and coffee. More than 600

food trucks are dotted around the city in pods, giving budding young restaurateurs a willing testing ground for their skills.

Bicycles are a major mode of transportation, with cycle lanes as wide as car lanes, bikeable bridges, and incredibly cycle-friendly traffic – Auckland, take note!

The Craft Brewery movement is alive and well in Portland and Oregon, with 52 Micro Breweries in the Portland alone, and 19 in the town of Bend. Craft Beer is everywhere, and it is fantastic, no doubt because of the excellent quality of water, and the Oregon obsession with keeping produce local. Again… it’s all about those people.

Oregon...one word to describe it – AWESOME.

Awesome Oregon

Central Oregon boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each and every year and is an adventure enthusiast’s Mecca.”

Oregon in the north-west of the USA is renowned for its rugged Pacific coastline, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, stunning forests, prairies, even desert – a true wonderland for travellers of many persuasions. COREY MARSHALL from Travel Oregon recently hosted a group of Kiwi tourists and was proud to reveal this state’s many delights.

Having not been to Rotorua for some 10 years, I thought a family mini-break to be a tourist in my own country, was just the ticket.

So Rotorua’s Novotel Lakeside was booked for its central location, indoor pool and generous buffet breakfast – on this occasion kids stayed and ate for FREE! We were off.

A detour to Candyland near Gordonton was obviously in order on the way down, and it didn’t fail to wow the children. However, when we piled back into the car after our brief visit the three-year-old was somewhat indignant, thinking we were off back home and THAT was the big trip to Rotorua mum and dad

had been raving about for weeks!

Our first day was sunny and a trip to Hell’s Gate to view the bubbling mud and smell the sulphur was on the agenda. The highlight was a picturesque waterfall cascading down at a balmy 40 degrees.

Together with a hands-on wood carving lesson then dipping our toes in the therapeutic mud, this was a great day out. Staff members were friendly and helpful, lending us a pushchair for our weary three-year-old when we set out on the 2.5km walk around the geothermal park.

The weather was somewhat inclement on our second day so a trip

to the Polynesian Pools was a great tonic and a whole lot of family fun. What’s more, the young barista at the café made a great latte.

Day three was action-packed. First stop was Rainbow Springs. We had heard good things from friends who had already visited and we weren’t disappointed. We could not fault walkways and infrastructure built around the native bush, or the opportunity to get close to native birds and reptiles. It was world class, a venue and conservation effort we should be proud of.

Of course, the BIG highlight for our children was the BIG SPLASH – in the words of my eight-year-old, “the best

water ride I’ve ever been on!” Even I have to admit, it was exhilarating.Next stop and just next door was the gondola and luge – just awesome and, as always, my three-year-old took it all in her stride – what a danger freak!

The next day it was time to return home and, having injected some hard- earned Auckland cash into the Rotorua economy, we were ‘spent’.

But for anyone who thinks they have seen it all at this tourist Mecca, think again. We only touched the surface of a huge range of attractions for a wide age group and heartily recommend Rotorua for its diversity and mix of free and paid activities.

The year is winding down with many people busy planning and booking family holidays before Christmas accommodation is snapped up. SARAH ELLIS recommends Rotorua for those keen on a short break.

FASHION& Health, beauty

Wherever she goes – even as far as the Mediterranean – Karen Newton’s togs are often the talk of the town. “People always ask me ‘where did you get your swimsuit?’ ”

The answer is simply: from Karen herself. Two years ago, the grandmother of three had a brainwave while splashing around with her grandchild.

“My little granddaughter had this rash suit – those two-piece sun-smart suits for children. They’re really cute and I thought ‘I want one like that!’”

Because they didn’t expose too much Karen thought they would be ideal for more mature skin. “I used to swim quite a lot and I noticed as I got older I wasn’t swimming as much because I couldn’t fi nd the right swimwear.”

As a keen sailor, swimmer and occasional windsurfer living right by the Mangemangeroa Estuary, there was no escaping the call of the ocean for Karen, especially with persuasive granddaughters in the background.

So, she embarked on a quest to design a women’s swimwear range that was comfortable, provided cover,

and offered protection from the sun. A trained market researcher and research evaluator, Karen conducted two focus groups to test the waters and fi nd out what women wanted.

She discovered zip-ups were easier to put on, a two-piece costume made it easy for visiting the toilet and accommodated height variations better, and sleeves plus longer pants helped conceal common problem areas.

Incorporating all these into a design with the help of a local patternmaker, Karen went about developing her vision. After a year of slogging away, Covertogs was born, launching online a year ago.

A quality garment, the swimwear range is made from 18% Italian lycra sourced from Australia and this year, Karen introduced a new fabric without elastane – which causes the swimsuit to break down in chlorine resulting in a loss of elasticity. “It’s more than just chlorine-resistant, it’s chlorine-proof,” says Karen.

The costumes also have a UV protection factor of 50+, offering maximum sun protection.

Digitally printed and cut, the fabric is sewn together by a tailor in Whitford. Optimum colour fastness is ensured with the dye-sublimation process which uses heat to transfer ink onto the material.

To date, more than 600 individual pieces of Covertogs have been sold and things are going swimmingly for

the soft-spoken entrepreneur. “It addresses an unmet need. The most rewarding part is talking to women who say, ‘oh wow, I’ve been looking for something like this for so long’!”

Encouraged by the response, Karen entered the nationwide ANZ Flying Start Business Plan Competition earlier this year.

Importantly, it wasn’t just about the prize money. “I did it because of the discipline required to enter the competition in terms of being able to develop a business plan and think strategically about how to grow a business.”

And it seems the judges were impressed by her efforts. Crowned the Auckland South winner of the competition in September, Karen receives $1000 in prize money, which she hopes will help towards her goal of launching into the Australian market.

Currently, she ships to a few customers across the Tasman some of whom she recruited on her annual hiatus to the Mediterranean.

She and her husband, Bruce Adlam, have a boat there and every winter they set sail for four months of warmer waters.

“My two sisters joined us on the boat this year and we were all in our Covertogs. We had a lot of fun.

People probably thought we were a sports team!”

Naturally, this attracts attention from other tourists, especially those who relate to the word ‘togs’. “They really like it,” she says.

Back at home, women from all over the country are ecstatic about their newfound apparel saying it’s fantastic and that they can now be active and out there.

“I think it’s really great feedback so I know I have the right product,” Karen says. “The next step is to really power up and move it to the next level.”

No stranger to hard work, or endurance, this should be relatively easy for the dairy farmer’s daughter from the Waikato. For starters, her beachfront home is only accessible by steps, more than 200 of them!

With Covertogs stock kept in a garage located at the top of this daunting climb, the energetic and youthful

looking businesswoman makes several trips a day to despatch orders and run errands.

Most days are quiet; husband Bruce works as a doctor and the couple’s three adult daughters have fl own the seaside crib.

Although they are no longer local, Karen can rely on them for help with the business as they rely on her for regular babysitting duties.

“It’s a business I want to grow and I want it to remain essentially a family business,” she says.

Despite her expansion plans, Karen is steadfast about maintaining the brand as a home-grown label. “I’m committed to it being a New Zealand brand and being made in New Zealand.”

And, as with most New Zealand-made products, Covertogs is a refl ection of the Kiwi lifestyle.

“My brand is about keeping women active and out there. That’s what I want Covertogs to do – give women a sense of freedom.”

It addresses an unmet need. The most rewarding part is talking to women who say, ‘oh wow, I’ve been looking for something like this for so long’!”

Ambling through European shoe fairs sounds glamorous, but for Michaela Inger it was the hard work required to bring quality European women’s shoes to Auckland.

Following months of research, travel, careful buying and even making a pair of shoes herself, Michaela opened the doors of the first Mikko Shoes store in Milford earlier this year.

Since then she and her team have opened three more stores in the same Mikko Shoes style, including at the Pakuranga Plaza. This site, together with the stores in Remuera and Pukekohe, are all trading successfully as is the company’s user-friendly website.

“I hunted all over for my brands and I’m really happy with the choice that is available to customers,” says Michaela, who has built a strong range of internationally-recognised brands, many exclusive to Mikko Shoes.

“You can’t just turn up to the fairs and choose what you want. You have to build relationships. It’s a lengthy and important process. Not only does the brand need to fit with Mikko Shoes; Mikko Shoes needs to fit with the brand.

“It’s great that many of the suppliers back me because of my youth. It’s an advantage being one of the youngest in the industry as my ideas, and my approach, are different, new and fresh – exactly what the industry needs.”

Michaela says the buying process is not as easy as many people think. “You have to make sure that the

product is marketable. There was a lot I had to say, ‘no’ to.”

Having searched and found quality shoes which encompass Mikko Shoes’ philosophy – that comfort, style and value should always go together, whatever the occasion – the next step involved critiquing top retailers across Australasia to bring the best customer service to Mikko Shoes.

Designing the fit-out and cabinetry was also a creative outlet for Michaela, who graduated in Fashion Design at AUT University and worked in the clothing industry following her study.

“You need a balance in life to allow yourself to work on such a large project,” she says. “The creative parts of the business are my favourite parts but I wouldn’t have reached this point without a steady head and a realistic approach.”

However, the store fit-out is not all

about creativity, Michaela says. It also involves project management and “expecting the unexpected”.

The end result is a series of world class stores with a European feel including the Pakuranga Plaza store which opened early in August.

Michaela says she is excited to be a retailer in a changing Pakuranga Plaza and is also looking forward to all her stores working as a team to ensure customers receive the best service across Auckland.

The new summer season, currently in store, is full of vibrant colours and European new season styling with hints of texture or metallic to suit every woman’s wardrobe.

A supportive and involved family has also been instrumental in putting the business together; whether for quality checks and feedback from her Mum and sister or retailing advice from Dad and The Warehouse Group co-founder, Glen Inger.

“With Dad’s retail background, he is my mentor. I’ll come up with an idea and he’ll tell me if I am being crazy or not and vice-versa. It’s about realistic solutions. Because he has been in retail for so long, it’s second nature to him.”

The store has a wide selection of shoes suitable for a range of customers; from small and large sizes to wide and orthotic-friendly fittings.

So far the Pakuranga shop has exuded an air of excitement as the East Auckland community checks out the new addition to their local mall.

“I’ve been surprised by the all-encompassing age bracket. I’m glad that women of all ages are starting to recognise quality,” Michaela says.

“Everyone is excited for Mikko Shoes. Pakuranga is excited. I’m excited. Most of all summer is set to be a vibrant season full of colour, soft leathers and textures. There is something for everyone.”

Mikko Shoes HITS EURoPEAN STRIDEShoeholics will be in seventh heaven with the opening of Mikko Shoes at the Pakuranga Plaza, but entrepreneurial owner Michaela Inger reveals that success first requires hard work.

Repertoire’s Style Director, Meghan MaheR, tells EastLife about the one piece which women should absolutely have in their wardrobe this winter.

radarStyleQ: I have just turned 65 and wonder what length summer pants I should be wearing?

A: The most ideal pant length should always be determined by the shape of your legs and the condition of your skin and muscle tone, which is generally age dependent. The most flattering and age-appropriate pant lengths are on the knee for shorts and 7/8ths or full length. Pant hemlines will always draw attention to the area of the leg they finish on.

It is vital when wearing a different pant length to ensure it finishes on a part of your leg that you like, ideally the narrowest part of your lower leg. I recommend analysing your legs in

a mirror, then decide on what pant length suits you best before going shopping.

If you love a pant that you feel finishes on an unflattering part of your leg you can always try rolling them up, or letting down the hem to see if the change in hemline makes a difference to how they look and feel. The 7/8th pant, which is currently in fashion, is a great length. It is best worn with a heel and can also be rolled up to a 3/4 length and worn with a flat shoe if this suits you.

Just remember 65 is the new 45 – exercise, great nutrition, body lotion and spray tans make any girl’s legs look fabulous no matter what her age!

As a child, and well into my late teens, I bit my nails. Revolting, I know, but after kicking this ghastly habit I now try hard to keep my hands and nails looking their best! So, this month I thought I’d share some easy steps for a beautiful manicure.

Shape

When shaping nails use a nail file that has both a coarse and fine surface. The coarse side is used to shape the nail while the fine side helps to smooth the nail edge. When filing be sure to always work in one direction, using long, smooth strokes and never file nails after bathing or swimming because that’s when they are at their weakest.

Clean

Make sure you remove any old nail polish using cotton pads. To help

clean and soften hands soak them in warm milk for up to five minutes. Why milk? Well, the lactic acid in milk helps remove dead cells and soften cuticles. The natural fats also help replenish dry skin.

CutiCleS

To remove any overgrown cuticles apply a cuticle eliminator around the cuticle area. After a few minutes gently push back the excess cuticles using a cuticle stick tipped with a cotton pad.

Buff

Buff nails with a nail buffer to smooth ridges and to leave nails with an amazing shine – your polish will last longer if it’s applied to an even surface. The buffing action also increases blood circulation in the nail which promotes healthy nail growth.

finiShing touCheS

Before applying your favourite nail polish please remember to use a base coat! This is extremely important as it will stop nails from becoming stained. Oh, and when finished, don’t forget to apply a topcoat for shine and longevity.

Finally, before I forget. It is also important to use nourishing hand cream, daily, to help keep hands in perfect condition. I keep hand creams

in various locations, and then there is no excuse. I keep one on my desk, by the kitchen sink, and believe it or not, beside my bed. Yes, the last thing I do before I turn out the light at night is apply hand cream.

• top tip: If you need to remove any ‘mistakes’ when applying nail polish, simply wrap some cotton wool around the tip of a cuticle stick, dip the tip into some nail polish remover and remove any nail polish from where it shouldn’t be.

Handing out nail tipsSay goodbye to bitten and broken nails – editor of beautybible.co.nz EMMA SMITh says summer is no time to be hiding hands in pockets so she’s provided some useful tips to make hands and nails beautiful.

Every year thousands of Aucklanders call Healthline for expert health advice/information.

With the launch of the free Healthline symptom checker app for Apple iPhones or iPads, users will be able to find their symptoms among a comprehensive list – for example, ‘rash – widespread’ – or by using the ‘browse by body parts’ option.

The app then suggests a course of action which could be to call an ambulance, see a doctor within 24 hours or advice on how to manage the condition at home.

The key to creating truly strong, healthy nails is nourishment. Just because you eat a specific food or nutrient doesn’t mean you get it.

Much of sparkling health comes down to the way you absorb and utilise nutrients in the body. Therefore, the first step in achieving great quality nails is outstanding digestion.

nails are mostly made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. They also have minerals built in to their matrix, including calcium, magnesium, boron and zinc.

including adequate protein in your diet is essential to nail quality, and often very soft nails are the result of poor protein utilisation in the body. This can be due to not eating enough protein or having poor digestion to extract the nutrients your nails need.

changes in fingernail appearance can

indicate something deeper is going on in the body so watch for changes in their strength, texture and colour.

Here are some tips on how they can look their best:

• if you have peeling cuticles, try rubbing coconut oil around your nail beds a couple of times each day. dry and peeling cuticles may be an indication of iron or essential fatty acid deficiency.

• if you have white spots on your nails you may be zinc deficient. Try and increase your consumption of zinc-rich foods such as nuts, seeds, and red meat.

• Pale, brittle, weak and thin nails can be an indication that your liver needs some love. incorporate more of the brassica group of vegetables in your diet such as broccoli, kale and cauliflower.

Pretty nails are easily achieved with a manicure and colourful polish but the way to healthy nails is through diet as dr libby WEAvEr explains.

Nurture your nails

incorporate more of the brassica group of vegetables in your diet such as broccoli, kale and cauliflower if your nails are pale, brittle and weak.”

“Your best weapon against skin ageing is your fork,” says nutritionist and author, Karen Fischer who specialises in health programmes for beautiful skin.

She has helped hundreds of patients with eczema and other severe skin disorders and her latest book, Younger Skin in 28 Days, is based on her belief that beauty is a direct reflection of inner health.

Karen believes eating the right foods supplies the skin with the nutrients it needs to produce new collagen, fight the bad guys in ageing known as AGEs (advanced glycation end products) and to look healthier and younger.

Subsequently, in Younger Skin in 28 Days, she tells readers how they can firm and tone their skin and take years off their appearance in a matter of weeks, largely by paying careful attention to what they put on their

forks. She also provides the top 12 anti-AGE foods for younger skin and the 12 factors which will age skin prematurely.

With a 14-day meal plan and 80 delicious, quick and easy recipes Younger Skin in 28 Days is this year’s hottest health fix for looking your best no matter what your age.

It also includes her nutritionally balanced, 28-day health programme aimed at boosting energy and concentration, promoting healthy weight loss, strengthening bones, hair and nails, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, lowering cholesterol and preventing bloating with the result that participants will look and feel younger.

Karen’s book reveals the best skin-

care products and supplements for younger skin, and includes a 3-day alkalising cleanse to fast-track results, including the latest

information on AGEs and a skin problem chart.

Younger Skin in 28 Days offers a quick-fix programme for those wanting to look their best for a

special occasion such as a wedding, holiday, reunion or even the summer party season!

It can improve a host of skin conditions including cellulite, wrinkles, dry skin, sun damage, acne, rough and bumpy skin, age spots and hyper-pigmentation.

Karen, who has extensively researched the relationship between nutrition and skin health, believes beauty is more than skin deep. She says what you see when you look in the mirror is a direct reflection of inner health and as a result of this view her book contains a wealth of information and guidance (including recipes) to healthier eating and living.

The advent of brighter, warmer days has seen fresh new faces emerge bringing equally sunny dispositions as well as a penchant for fi tness and wellbeing.

Emma Louise O’Regan and Deirdre Collins have crossed oceans to be in this part of the world and have now arrived at the sharp new Peak Pilates & Physiotherapy studio in Botany Rd.

Bringing with them boundless enthusiasm and expertise in both Pilates and physiotherapy, the Irish duo wears more than just a bucket hat. Having experienced the benefi ts of the combined approach themselves, the trained professionals fi rmly believe in their work.

“We’ve seen the effects of both Pilates and physiotherapy in Ireland and our patients love it because they see results almost instantly,” says Deirdre.

An avid Gaelic footballer, Deirdre says everyone from elite athletes to the elderly can benefi t from personalised plans and treatments.

“We treat people from all ages, walks of life, and all kinds of injuries. What’s great about it is we actually spend an hour with each of our clients to ensure every area is covered, and to strengthen muscles, fi x issues and eliminate pain – rehabilitation, in other words.”

An active runner and swimmer, Emma Louise says posture is paramount for overall performance and fl exibility in daily life.

“I love seeing clients actively participating and incorporating important habits such as correct posture.”

And if they keep it up, the results can be life-changing. “I encourage people to think about their posture throughout the day in their everyday settings and it really does work wonders!”

Thanks to these friendly experts, the ever-expanding Botany location can now climb to greater peaks with new classes led by Emma Louise and Deirdre.

Owner Jason Richardson says the new studio has been embraced by clients who love the ease of access, modern environment and new private treatment rooms offering optimum comfort.

Focused on correcting posture and improving spinal support which prevents chronic back and neck pain, the team offers mat-based and reformer classes which rebalance and strengthen muscles and increase spinal fl exibility.

“Most people sit at a desk all day which causes them to hunch often resulting in neck pain. If this is happening on a daily basis, it needs to be counter balanced with extension and rotation. It’s about reinforcing correct posture and fl ushing out the bad habits.”

With more than 600 Pilates exercises involving stretching, balancing and learning proper breathing patterns, the benefi ts are many and long-lasting but can only be seen and felt in the course of time. As a result, concession cards are available for regulars, and an easy online booking system is used to minimise hassle. Advice and guidance is always at hand.

There are a number of different options when it comes to exercising. The advice and choices can be so varied that it is hard to know where to start.

Something to consider is your current fitness level. You may need to build on your strength, technique or endurance before trying some of the more advanced training methods.

The fantastic thing about exercise is that it can be adapted to each individual, so anyone can join in and exercise at their own level.

With this in mind, the best form of training is a personal choice. An effective training plan should fit your level of fitness, exercise experience and training goals. It also helps if you enjoy what you are doing so it is easier to stick to.

Like most endeavours, it is worth making a clear plan before you begin. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Speaking to a qualified exercise professional will help you decide what type of exercise is best for you.

Unfortunately, there isn’t one best plan or type of exercise out there. An exercise plan is only effective if you are able to complete it.

Often practical considerations such as available times, being close to home, ease of use and fitting into your budget are all important reasons when selecting a fitness routine.

Remember that above all, exercising should be fun. Providing that you are being active for 30 minutes a day, it doesn’t matter what you decide to do, as long as you are doing it.

OLLY COffeY is the National PT Manager for Jetts fitness New Zealand. He is a RePS-registered Skills Active Assessor and plays an important role in ensuring our personal trainers are fully equipped to meet the diverse needs of all Jetts members.

Besides leading the world in rugby, New Zealand can claim some other extraordinary achievements:

• We lead the world in rates of bowel cancer in women

• We have the second highest rate of strokes

• We have the second highest rate of hip fractures

• We have one of the highest rates of obesity

• We have the fourth highest rate of diabetes

• We have the fifth highest rate of breast cancer in women

• We have the sixth highest rate of heart disease

We also place extremely well in the following categories: osteoporosis, arthritis, asthma, ADHD, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, infertility and many others.

I think a good question to ask is ‘why?’.

We may have to go back a few million years for the answer. Our bodies have evolved on the basis of receiving certain nutrients and not being exposed to certain toxins.

Suddenly in the last 100 years we have assaulted our bodies with toxic metals, herbicides, pesticides, radiation, chemicals, electro magnetic fields and chronic stress. We put them in our mouth, on our skin and in our houses.

In addition we do not support our bodies with the nutrients they need, sufficient sleep, suitable exercise, relaxation and appropriate stimulation.

As a result the body stores more and more toxins, eats into its energy and nutrient reserves and eventually breaks down with disease.

Our bodies give us so many signs that they are succumbing to disease, but we either do not recognise them or ignore them.

Lack of energy, gas bloating, headaches, bad skin, brain fog, aches and pains and a host of other symptoms are not normal.

Your body is talking and, in some cases, screaming at you.

We have been conditioned to visit a doctor when we break down. Invariably the doctor prescribes a drug, but the vast majority of drugs treat symptoms, not causes. They also come with side effects.

Think about it, the body does not break down because it is deficient in a drug. As we age, we accept a cocktail of drugs on a daily basis, as normal. We come to think of certain diseases as inevitable. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Good health, feeling well and aging well is a choice. It is a choice you get to make every day of your life. You can settle for being one of the above statistics or you can live life to the full, retaining youthful looks, vigour and a bright alert mind. It is a decision to be made today.

At the Be Well Clinic we can do as little or as much as you want. We provide natural solutions for chronic disease through to a full analysis

of your wellness status, with a full treatment plan of diet, lifestyle, nutrients, supplements, and herbs.

We specialise in detoxing, fat loss, gaining energy and anti aging. Featured is just one of the many tests we offer. Specific testing regimes are designed for individual cases.

We support you being the best that you can be, so that you can enjoy life and avoid or beat disease.

Well, spring is in the air! The days are longer and warmer and the silly season is just around the corner. This is the perfect time of year to give your food and exercise a bit of a rev up!

The following tips will help keep you nutritionally on track:

• Stay organised and plan ahead. Failing to plan is definitely planning to fail where food and exercise are concerned.

• Eat regularly. Missing meals will make you feel tired, and may increase cravings and slow down your metabolism.

• Use light and healthy snacks such as veggie sticks and hummus.

• Avoid processed foods as much as possible.

• Eat 2-3 fruit serves a day – make the

most of summer berries.• Increase your vegetable intake with

bright colourful salads.• Include protein in each meal.• Reduce stimulants such as tea,

coffee, energy drinks, cola and alcohol.

• Reduce your sugar intake.• Make your own dips by blending

salmon or beans with lite cottage cheese.

• Dilute higher fat dips with plain low fat yoghurt.

• Blend herbs and spices or sweet chili sauce into extra-lite cream cheese.

• Use huge platters of strawberries and fresh summer fruits with Lite Greek yoghurt instead of cream.

• Make the most of seasonal salad and veggies when entertaining or eating at home.

• Barbecue chicken, fish and lean meat and combine with fresh veggies. Be adventurous and try barbecuing asparagus, courgettes, eggplant, mushrooms, onions and garlic with a light spray of oil.

• Exercise portion control; a small taste of something yummy is better than trying to be ‘good’ but failing and then beating yourself up before demolishing two huge helpings!

Alcohol

• Offset each glass of alcohol with one of water.

• Drink spritzers – white wine topped up with soda water.

• Use low calorie mixers with spirits – lemonade, tonic water and coke often contain more calories than the spirit.

• Remember the calories in a bottle of wine are equal to a steak and cheese pie!

• Try for some alcohol-free days each week.

ExErcisE

Just because you are on holiday doesn’t mean you have to sit on your bottom all day.

Make a pact to exercise most days of the week. An early morning walk on the beach or in the park is good for the mind, body and soul. Set some New Year fitness goals.

Finally – take some soul time, breathe deeply, acknowledge the beauty of our country and live each day with vitality and passion.

Here’s some food for thought... while the mighty All Blacks may have an impressive winning rate of 75.98 percent, it seems only 52 percent of Kiwis think they could beat a trumpet!

Kiwis may love their sport but it seems the quickest way to their hearts is through their stomachs, according to a recent Colmar Brunton poll.

Although 52 percent of the more than 1,000 Kiwis asked about ‘Kiwiana’ brands they were most fond of said they loved the All Black brand, Tip-Top scored 57 percent, with Whittaker’s chocolate leading the pack with 62 percent.

Colmar Brunton CEO, Jacqueline Ireland, says Whittaker’s chocolate leapt up the table for being recognised as Kiwi, as well as a Kiwi brand.

“A third of people think of Whittakers when asked to name a New Zealand brand, which shows pretty impressively the company’s Kiwi-centric advertising is hitting the mark.”

Brands offering tasty treats further featured

with the remaining places on the top 10 list

being claimed by Cadbury, Trade Me, Air New Zealand,

Pineapple Lumps, Edmonds, Heinz Wattie’s and L&P.

Jacqueline says consistent performance is crucial to success.

“A most loved brand needs to have put in the hard yards with the public, and not only that, but have been totally dependable with its promise to the consumer over many years.

“The best brands evoke positive

childhood memories and provide tangible links to those memories – they are known and trusted as well as loved.”

A notable omission from the top 10 was Marmite, perhaps refl ecting diffi culties following disruption to the company’s production line following the Christchurch earthquake.

The survey provides useful pointers for those wanting to create iconic Kiwi brands, Jacqueline says.

“Fundamentally, they need to be clear on what it means to be a New Zealander – and what makes New Zealanders proud.”

Taking a ‘waist-not’ approach could be even easier for foodies than previously thought if recent fi ndings prove correct.

According to research recently published in the Nutrition Journal, people who regularly eat avocados weigh 3.4 kilograms less on average and have waistlines approximately four centimetres smaller, than those who don’t.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) also found avocado consumers have lower BMIs, higher intakes of nutrients – such as fi bre, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K – and more good fats, as well as a lower intake of added sugars.

Dietician, nutritionist and former Masterchef NZ winner, Nadia Lim, says avocados are an ideal option for people who desire nutritious food.

“Avocados are a perfect food – they’re abundant in valuable vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy fats, protein and carbohydrates.

“Nutritionists have long recommended consuming the healthy fats from avocados which are known to support improved overall diet quality,

nutrient intake and heart health.”

The fi ndings also indicate that eating avocado every day lowers risk of metabolic syndrome – which can increase the possibility of coronary artery disease, strokes, and type-2 diabetes – while boosting HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol, levels.

home

Homeowners keen to revitalise tired furnishings will find this summer’s colours are fresh, vibrant and clear. There are a variety of blues from strong cobalts to inky blues with aqua having its moment to shine.

Coral is experiencing a big resurgence and orange is on fire. A very clean yellow plus lots of mustard is also coming though for the warmer months.

By combining these wonderful, tangy colours with crisp linens and then co-ordinating drapery, cushions and wallpaper, summer interiors promise to be fun, refreshing and colourful.

Also check out wallpapers, which are making a strong comeback, with fascinating graphics that tell a story – something for every room.

Summer, with its splash of creamy-delicious gelato colours, has arrived at Howick Furnishings adding fresh style options for window treatments, upholstery and cushions.

And, with the input of highly experienced curtain specialists Richard and Marion Woolford, the forecast for new season redecorating couldn’t be better.

Established since 1970, Howick Furnishings can truly claim to have dressed the windows in hundreds of local homes, with Marion providing advice that goes beyond headings and linings required.

With her practised eye for interior design, Marion’s counsel far outstrips that of most curtain retailers. She willingly provides in-home consultations, carefully considering existing decor, lifestyle needs and

personal preferences before suggesting colours, patterns, textures, and curtain styling.

“There is a wealth of options when it comes to curtains, blinds and upholstery fabrics and with every season comes a shift in colour. For example, we are seeing the return of navy after many years’ absence – the various hues making a big impact,” she says. “Shutters are also enormously popular and more affordable than ever.

“As new ranges emerge, making decisions is not always easy. Experienced advice as to how new patterns might fit with an existing look or with a projected new makeover can be the catalyst to a successful outcome.”

Located on the corner of Moore and Vincent Streets, Howick Furnishings

features top to toe, wall to wall fabric samples, giving customers every opportunity to find the perfect fit for their home be it a window treatment, new upholstery or cushions to bring a fresh look together.

And because Richard does all the measuring and hanging there are no contractors involved – the job is carried out efficiently and expertly.

So, if window treatments are on your ‘must do’ list before Christmas call

Marion quickly – she can still manage to have early November bookings made and hung by Christmas.

Today’s home entertainers now look beyond a charcoal barbecue and a few simple deck chairs on the back porch when friends come round to socialise. Instead they are developing beautiful al fresco lounges which may

be formal, informal, lavish, simple, rustic or a tropical paradise.

Comfort, shelter, outlook, privacy and ambience are all taken into consideration and householders can peruse a multitude of design ideas before choosing a style to reflect their personal idea of relaxation.

When developing such an area first take into account prevailing winds, sun, shade, views, available space and access.

Also decide which materials will go underfoot – timber, tiles, large pavers, brick or cobbles, a combination of

Lounging out of doors

Come summer Kiwis love to entertain out of doors so much so, that with every passing year, decks, patios, balconies, rooftops, and courtyards are becoming truly stylish outdoor living rooms. But, when starting with a blank canvas, there is much to consider.

grass and poured concrete. If your outdoor space is on a balcony or rooftop that may have already been decided.

Think about the type of furniture you prefer. Man-made rattans and wicker suites have become increasingly popular teamed with fade and weather-resistant soft cushioning that can be formal or fun living. But if your space is confined, choose carefully as some of these pieces are quite large. Measuring may be called for.

Quality timber units made from hardwoods such as kwila make the cut too while some opt for the ease of aluminium-framed, glass or mosaic tables with matching chairs that come with fade-resistant topper pads.

It’s important to consider the need for shade – awnings, sails, umbrellas can all do the job but the range is huge so do some research before deciding what best fits your space and look.

Accessories may include weather-proof rugs, colourful outdoor lights and free-standing heaters although, these days, permanent pizza ovens and outdoor fireplaces are both practical and aesthetically attractive. They are also well-suited to many outdoor situations.

When it comes to privacy (and sometimes warmth) think about screens, partial fences, large sculptures, potted trees, wedge planting and dropside curtains, but be careful to retain sun and outlook especially if you have a balcony overlooking the ocean or a view of the countryside.

Once decided on a plan in which the furnishings and colours will make you feel calm and relaxed, then ensure landscaping enhances the mood. Choose plants wisely but be sure upkeep is manageable – don’t overdo it unless you are a keen gardener.

Importantly, when catering for family and friends, be sure this new outdoor room is a place where there’s no need for lots of fuss – you too deserve to enjoy the environment you have created.

The question frequently asked of our Carlton Party Hire team is how can I make my function or event look different and give it the “WOW” factor?

Often, the answer is in the lighting.

Lighting alternatives available for parties have greatly increased in recent years ranging from the more traditional party lighting mirror balls, strobe lights, black lights, radius disco lights and laser lights with fog machines right through to advanced LED lighting curtains and LED furniture.

So often atmosphere is missing from a function but lighting is a simple, cost-effective way to create mood and ambience.

LED furniture is rechargeable so it’s great for indoor or outdoor use where power is unavailable. LED furniture can be set on one of a large range of colours, it can fade between colours, can strobe or even flash as the party progresses.

The LED range includes bars, bar leaners, benches, stools, coffee tables and ice buckets.

Don’t have a venue? Carlton Party Hire can create one for you by supplying a marquee.

New Zealand has beautiful landscapes that can form the perfect setting for a party or wedding and there are lots of options for marquees, including clear walls to make the most of that beautiful scenery through to flooring systems such as dance floors.

For a complete range of products to assist in making your party a fabulous success visit our Carlton Party Hire website www.carltonpartyhire.co.nz or call one of our friendly party hire team at the eastern branch, 62 Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, phone 577-0328. Featuring in the Auckland Garden DesignFest, John and Kath Clark’s property will be on display as the tour carries guests to view 25 carefully selected private gardens throughout Auckland this month.

Less than a year on from development of their impressive garden, orchestrated by landscape designer Robin Shafer, John says he is pleased with the results.

“The idea was to have a resort style property. Robin did most of the design and we made a few minor changes to suit. We explained what we wanted and she put it all together. We said, ‘that’s it’ and she said, ‘is it?’ We said ‘yes, it looks great!’ ”

Robin says she set about developing a dream garden for the Clarks’ new build home.

“They were looking for a tropical oasis with privacy and wind protection; a play space for family members,” she says.

“Access once the house was built was a problem and we had to shift large palms. But, now, the big lawns and the pool’s shallow areas provide for young grandchildren with plenty of outdoor areas permitting outdoor living in all wind directions.”

After 30 years in landscape design, Robin says times and tastes have

changed. “People’s needs have become simpler. I have noticed family time has become much more important. I design gardens geared to my clients’ personal style, which will vary from person to person.

“Tastes go through many phases, but beautiful, timeless spaces to rest and connect with family and friends are always desired. With good basic layout a garden will survive style changes and upgrades.”

During the Auckland Garden DesignFest, visitors will have the opportunity to speak with designers and, perhaps, garner a little inspiration for their own backyards.

The two-yearly festival – developed by Garden Design Society of NZ and the Rotary Club of Newmarket – is intended to raise funds for children’s charities and showcase the work of landscape designers.

With charities – including Ronald McDonald House, KidsCan and Garden to Table – set to benefit, John is pleased to open his garden gates to visitors.

“Money goes to charity, so we’re happy to support that, and it’s an honour and privilege to be a part of it,” he says. “I do a lot more in the garden now because it’s so nice out

there. It’s more pleasurable and everything’s growing very quickly. It certainly enhances our enjoyment of the property.”

Robin Shafer’s work will also be on show at garden 12 in Balmoral.

Tickets for the Auckland Garden DesignFest are available for visits to individual, or all gardens. Visit gardendesignfest.co.nz for details.

From country bush to our own backyards, New Zealand is blessed by a plethora of native birds.

Perhaps no one appreciates this more than senior curator of natural history at Canterbury Museum, Paul Scofield. His new book, Birds of New Zealand – A Photographic Guide, with amazing images by Brent Stephenson, is a stunning documentation of 365 bird species found in New Zealand.

“New Zealand is truly a land of birds, with no naturally occurring terrestrial

mammals,” Paul says. “Birds are the commonest wild animals that New Zealanders will see outdoors. When our national parks and recreation facilities are put together and designed, birds are taken into account more than anything else and increasingly tourism is benefitting from our endemic birdlife.”

In his new book, Paul draws on the latest information from birders and biologists, producing a definitive introduction to the identification and behaviour of this country’s

extraordinary avian life.

Birds of New Zealand features all birds that occur naturally, those that have established wild populations and rare visitors. And with Brent Stephenson’s incredible photographs, this book is a must have.

October was certainly a month of memorable faux pas, skulduggery and big mistakes.

Unfortunately, we tend to be drawn to the hype and scandal associated with our favourite TV stars, politicians and sports people whenever they make a mistake.

I suppose the sad thing about the Len Brown affair is there are no winners. Len did something that thousands of Kiwis before him have been guilty of and I am sure thousands more will in the future.

We Kiwis seem to be a pretty forgiving bunch. I’m sure with time our singing Mayor’s indiscretions will be forgiven, although maybe not forgotten.

Notoriety does come with its

expectations and perceptions – acceptability and accountability being the forefront of any credible person’s road to redemption. However, I do struggle to accept the motives of some of our media sources who connive to destroy the lives of our esteemed “A listers”.

We all make mistakes, that’s a fact of life.

As an apprentice builder I made plenty of mistakes. My boss was a hard task master and taught me the meaning of acceptability and accountability. Often it is not the mistake that irks people, it’s how you fix it and make amends.

Over the years I have watched as countless celebrities’ dirty laundry and hidden demons have been exposed to all those willing to bathe

in the hurt and anguish. My hero Jonah Lomu fronted the nation tearfully repenting his decision to exclude his parents from his marriage to South African, Tanya Rutter. Then there was Norm Hewitt, Doug Howlett, Jesse Ryder and Zac Guilford who all had their afflictions with alcohol exposed.

It’s those choices we make in life that mould our future and create history. Being remembered in a good way is important, but even our most revered

heroes make mistakes. Showing integrity and understanding that we are only human makes accepting, we will all, whether from naivety or just plain stupidity, make mistakes at certain times in our lives.

Don’t hide it, learn from it, stand tall, admit your mistake or mistakes and accept the admiration and respect people will give you for being honest and human.

Now, I have to say a big thank you to Dale King, Rowan Toms and Sir Peter Leitch for putting on another fantastic Blue September Breakfast at Placemakers Pakuranga to raise money and awareness of prostate cancer.

And to all those guys out there taking part in “Movember” – good on you! Raising awareness of men’s often ignored health issues is a great cause – Go Mo Bro’s.

Oh, and by the way, of what you hear, believe nothing, of what you see, believe only half.

Part one

I prefer the term ‘life-transfer’, instead of ‘death’. I can’t believe that I arrived here, did so much, and my ultimate reward is... the end! That’s not right, is it? Hello? So, I became a devout... ‘Nowist’. I haven’t achieved everything, but I have done much already.

To be a Nowist is difficult. A Nowist wants to do the good stuff... now! Alas, our world is not over-populated

with many Nowists. It is overrun by ‘Laterists’ (Look, I’ll get to that later, oK!) and ‘Soonerists’ (All right, I’ll get to it soon. Promise.).

Apart from these crazy creatures, there are other ‘now’ obstacles. The worst, is ‘time’.

Which twit, or group of twitters (that rings a bell...), only put 24 hours in a day? The Egyptians started all of this, with their ‘water clock’, around 1500 BC.

Not only is there never enough time, there is not enough money, will, support, information, tools, understanding or enthusiasm. We have to battle skeptics, adversaries, competitors, slow-movers, procrastinators, those who focus only on the problems, negaholics and the seriously risk-averse.

Worser, even we Nowists, can momentarily succumb to (Heaven forbid!)... ‘self-doubt’. For shame! We almost believe that nasty little ‘what-if’ clique. That is where the doubters, ultra-conservatives, the unimaginative, the envious and the ‘picky’ dwell. Their mantra is...

‘I believe nothing, until you can

prove it to me’. In Part II of my call to ‘adventure’, I will give you the ultimate antidote to this widespread mantra.

We teach this power breakout in our ‘online 3Percenter Course (o3C)©’ for which enrolments to start in January 2014, are open... now, to a limited number of go-getters whom I will coach online personally. It is world-unique and the time for this personal transformation course for real achievers is... now.

Know that the statement, ‘better safe than sorry’, has been a dream-killer forever. Let it not happen to you. Cheers. – [email protected]

LATERISM, SooNERISM AND NoWISM. WADDyA RECKoN?

Challenging times call for lateral thinking – and that’s exactly the advice we’d give would-be-property owners at the moment.

While the Reserve Bank decision to restrict bank funded over-80% LVR lending has created a quandary for many home hunters, the good news is there are quality alternatives.

We are a conservative bunch on the

whole and tend to prefer the main banks, but one of the silver linings of times like these, is that we become more aware of other providers and what they offer. RESIMAC is one of those – a lender with 29 years in the market and rating of ‘STRoNG’ by Standard and Poor’s (one of the world’s leading rating agencies).

RESIMAC is continuing to lend up to 90% for quality borrowers, who are

introduced by a preferred mortgage adviser, for example Mortgage People; and up to 95% where a second mortgage of 5% is secured with a chosen finance partner.

The lender is also considering launching a policy which allows for gifted deposits.

It comes down to the maths. Will property prices in your chosen area increase at a rate which makes getting a 20% deposit together an unachievable race against time?

What is the opportunity cost? Can you comfortably service a loan at a

higher LVR? If the maths stacks up, then why not think laterally and look at alternatives to banks?

of course, we always advise clients to consider their financial commitments carefully, but taking a look at the likes of RESIMAC shows that there are viable solutions for some home buyers who would otherwise be locked out of the market.

If that’s you, you can explore whether RESIMAC is an option by contacting Fencible Law or Mortgage People on 0800 823 823 (www.mortgagepeople.co.nz) or for more information go to www.resimac.co.nz.

So you’re thinking of selling and wondering how long the real estate good times will last? First decide whether to ‘make hay while the sun shines’ and sell now or hang on until it either gets better or goes soft as, no doubt, it will, sooner or later!

If you want to sell and decide to call a few agents for an appraisal and idea of price, be sure to select an agent with the best attitude towards service; not one who just gives you the best price or the lowest commission!

When I say service I mean someone who is a decisive, non-waffling type who will be on your side and that doesn’t always mean doing just as you say! You want an agent that won’t be pushed around by the buyers and can actually sell, not just take the order!

Your agent should first give you a Comparative Market Appraisal to show similar properties that have sold and are selling in the area. Your agent has to be positive and know how to sell!

Remember, anyone can buy your listing by giving you the price you want to hear and then cap it off by saying they’ll charge the least commission. But do you really want someone who will ‘quote them high and watch them die!’ then come around and ‘vendor crunch’ you with phrases such as ‘well I thought

the market would give you your price but the buyers don’t see it there,’ or, worse still, ‘my colleagues don’t agree with the asking price!’?

Some agents may say they will get you your dream price but will they? Does anything that sounds too good to be true ever eventuate?

Yes, Asians are buying but they aren’t silly. They pay good money for good property but they don’t buy any property for more than it’s worth! The number of Asians attending auctions lately has meant many auctions are carried out in both English and Mandarin and sometimes Hindi. We try to ensure no one misses out! Especially not you, the vendor, who wants the best price!

But what is the best price? It’s the most the current market will pay and is only achieved with great presentation, excellent location and an agent that won’t buckle at the first offer!

As a seller all you want is service. This means communication and a positive result from your agent. Get a commitment that you will receive just that and make sure your agent has multilingual sales staff in order to reach buyers of many different languages and cultures. Of course, a bit of good luck never goes astray either!

– Eric Chase, RE/MAX Zest

SEllInG ISn’T AS SIMplE AS IT OnCE WAS!

Total Focus principal, GREG ROY areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.

September figures just released would indicate that the market is levelling out after its dramatic run over the last year or so.

The median price in the greater Howick area dropped back to $730,500 from its all time high of $740,000 for August. This trend line is not unexpected and I am sure most people will be happy to see some stability emerging.

Whenever I meet someone I know we invariably start talking real estate, and this year, more so than ever, with the market movement in prices constantly making the news.

But it’s been a year where we have had a continued shortage of listings. This makes it really difficult for people to plan their next move, especially families that don’t want to get caught out homeless and end up having to rent.

Their dilemma is; do they sell first and join the queues at the auctions or try their luck buying, conditional on selling their own home (if they can even find a vendor who will do this) and hope not to lose out to one of

the cashed up buyers out there. We have experienced a larger number of disappointed buyers who have missed out on their dream home.

And if one looks at the volume of sales for the area it hasn’t been a year of startling numbers.

For example in September this year there were 182 sales, and to put this in context over, say the last 6 years, we have had a high of 352 (Mar 07), and a low of 119 (Jan 09).

But going back 10 years to September 2003 there was more than double the number at 435 (with a median price of $398,000) and we have a larger stock of houses today.

So, I say bring on more stability and we can get more people on the move and into their new home.

Buyers of modern Aussie muscle cars like V8s and they like the sound they make too.

The ownership experience is about the feeling of all that delicious torque pressing you back in the seat, the roomy feel and on-road presence of a big car, and the exhaust burble.

Holden’s new VF Commodore SS-V Redline ticks all those boxes, bar one. It’s a sensational car with a level of refi nement that you’d expect to fi nd in a high end European offering, and has an equipment level to match.

The only thing missing is that traditional V8 soundtrack. A lot of effort has gone into insulating the cabin from noise and vibration, which enhances that car’s upmarket feel.

The interior oozes quality, and you’d

have to be a multiple amputee to not be able to fi nd the right driving position.

The styling is right on the money, and there’s no question this test car’s ‘Red Hot’ paint and black alloys look the part.

In SS-V Redline spec, which is as high spec as a performance Commodore

buyer can go without breaking into HSV territory, things get even better.

With its unique FE3 Ultra Sports Suspension, SS-V Redline handles brilliantly. There’s good feedback through the steering, turn-in is crisp, and the car corners with precision.

Grip from the Bridgestone rubber is equally impressive; 19” alloys with

245/40 tyres are standard on SS-V and SS-V Redline, but Redline gets wider 275/35 rear tyres.

Yes, the ride is fi rm but I certainly wouldn’t rate it as uncomfortable. You could gobble up long distances in this thing and feel like you could turn around and do it all over again.

The 260kW, 517Nm Gen IV 6.0-litre

Silence is Holden...Holden’s latest high performance sedan, the VF Commodore SS-V Redline is the automotive equivalent of a Lear jet: fast and whisper quiet. ALISTAIR DAVIDSON can live with the fast bit every easily but the lack of a V8 soundtrack? Deafening!

V8 is a delight. Smoother than a smooth thing, throttle response is instant and all that torque makes overtaking a cinch.

A six-speed automatic with manual shift mode is standard; a six-speed manual gearbox is a no-cost option, and you also get an extra 10kW of power. Power and torque figures are the same for SS, SS-V and SS-V Redline.

Redline comes fully loaded. It basically shares the same high spec as SS and SS-V, but with some attractive additions.

Highlights are the very effective Brembo brakes, and the aforementioned performance suspension.

Tick ‘Redline’ on the order sheet and you’ll also get lane departure warning, forward collision alert, rain sensing wipers, alloy faced pedals, a trick colour heads-up display (projects important info onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight) and awesome nine-speaker Bose audio.

All VF Commodores have a reversing camera as standard.

SS-V Redline is priced at $74,990, $13K above SS and $5500 more than SS-V.

All you need to factor into the pricing equation is the cost of an exhaust system that SS-V Redline should have come out with in the first place; either through your Holden dealer or an aftermarket supplier (the second option might void the new car warranty).

Whichever option you choose it’ll be worth the investment because this new Commodore is well worth making a noise about.
