-2- EASTERN VALLEY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Fall Session on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Harmony Baptist Church

Theme: ‘Intergenerational Ministries’ At the Harmony Hall Ellen Saunders and Virginia DeAdder processed those who had pre-registered. Of the 46 persons who had, 39 actually attended. Darryl Dykens, Vice-Clerk, met and registered the 29 persons who arrived to register. 68 people were in attendance. By 8:45 a.m. a Musical Prelude was offered in the Sanctuary by the five members of the “Acts of Worship.” These included Zach Cooper, Rev. Karen Doucette, Alex & Sarah Sanford, and Bonita Sanford. The Moderator, Gail K. Cook, shared a reading from Dr. J. R. C. Perkin’s devotional book which was based on Ephesians 2:19-22. She offered a word of welcome to various groups of persons in attendance, and a word of thanks to others who had specific commitments to fulfil. She introduced the host Pastor, Rev. Janet Baker. Janet shared her welcome. In light of today’s theme, “Intergenerational Ministries,” she shared the news that sixteen year old Spencer Conway, a gifted rapper of scripture who is enrolled in the Acadia BTh program, was awarded the “East Coast Lifestyle Award” yesterday which came with a scholarship to Acadia University. Four years ago Janet participated in a Youth Ministry educational trip/course in Prague which led her to understand that whether one is five or ninety “The Message is Still the Same.” She shared a reading from 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 and illustrated from her experience how the message is still the same. The “Acts of Worship” team shared a rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Rev. Wayne Fevens introduced the keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Steven Hopper, Pastor at the Baptist churches in Liverpool and Brooklyn and a 2014 graduate of the Doctor of Ministry program at Acadia Divinity College. Dr. Hopper reminded us that from 1996 to 2000 he was in the EVBA as the Pastor at the South Rawdon Baptist Church. As he considered today’s theme of “Intergenerational Ministries” he pointed out that the pastor’s role has changed as culture has changed. Using the research he had undertaken in his DMin Project he invited congregational participation in response to two questions: Why do people not attend church? Why do adults who grew up in church decide not to attend? As folk responded he was able to illustrate four adjectives for each question: Spiritual, Volitional, Emotional, Practical; and Cultural, Philosophical, Social, Practical. With illustrations from his own experience and the testimony of others he introduced “An Implementation Plan” that is based on three principles: Holistic Ministry; Faith within the Nuclear Family; and Intentional Congregational Discipleship Ministry. Although there are hurtles to clear, he challenged those present with “Four Action Steps:” Do your own research; Gather your own data; Discover your unique results; and Build a location specific plan. He concluded by acknowledging that a PDF file of his thesis is available on the CABC Web Site: http://baptist-atlantic.ca/tools-resources/doctoral-research/. There was additional time provided for questions and discussion. The Moderator thanked Steve for his development of today’s theme. Gail went on to direct people’s attention to the concluding section of the published report book where, beginning at page 33, there are descriptions of Intergenerational Ministries provided by EVBA churches. An offering was received in support of the EVBA. Then folk moved to the Harmony Hall for refreshments. By 11 a.m. the members of “The Acts of Worship” sang as people reassembled in the sanctuary.

Page 6: Eastern Valley Baptist Association Saturday, May 7, 2016 · The “Acts of Worship” team shared a rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Rev. Wayne Fevens introduced the keynote speaker,

The Moderator invited Rev. Wayne Fevens, Chair of the Leadership Development Committee, to introduce those present who are for the first time receiving an EVBA License to Minister. He introduced Annie de Lamicande who is now associated with the Kentville United Baptist Church, and Jeffrey

-3- Baggaley who is with the Middleton Baptist Church. He offered prayer for these new licensees. He also announced the annual renewal of the EVBA License to Minister for Lori Noseworthy from the New Minas Baptist Church, and Jennifer Levy. The Moderator offered a prayer to open the EVBA Business Meeting. She directed people to the Agenda on page one of the Report Book. It was duly MOVED (Allison Trites/Darryl Dykens) and PASSED that the Agenda be adopted. Gail read aloud the Rules of Order (cf., p. 2); and then invited the Clerk to address the Spring Association Minutes (cf., pp. 2-8). It was duly MOVED (Ron Baxter/Charlene Reid) and PASSED that the Minutes of the May 2, 2015 Association be adopted as printed and circulated. The Clerk was invited to present the EVBA Council Report (cf., pp. 8-9). Ron Baxter directed attention to the printed report and noted that at the June 6th meeting there was a recommendation that involved the current Moderator so it would be appropriate for the vice-moderator to chair the meeting. When Rev. Wayne Merrill came to the pulpit it was duly MOVED (Ron Baxter/Alan Haley) and PASSED that Gail K. Cook be appointed as the EVBA Ambassador to take our message to the churches under our care during her term as Past Moderator. When Gail returned to the platform she expressed her thanks for the honour of being an ambassador for the EVBA. The Moderator invited a motion to receive reports published in the Report Book. It was duly MOVED (Charlene Reid/Virginia DeAdder) and PASSED that the following reports be received as submitted: EVBA Council, Moderator, Vice-Moderator, WMS Association Report, and the Convention Reports. In succession the following motions were processed: MOVED (Thelma McLeod/Darryl Dykens) and PASSED that the Chaplaincy Committee report be accepted including Liz Johnson’s additional information. NOTE: The Chaplaincy Committee of the EVBA wish to inform you that we are applying for a Summer Student Grant from the Municipality of the County of Kings. We would hope to place a person at Grand View Manor and her position would be to gather the social history of the residents and to be a help to our Chaplain, Rev. Sarah [Scott]. We hope this meets with your approval. Ron Baxter also informed those assembled that Shelley Illsley-Martin, our Chaplain at Dykeland Lodge is currently on Medical Leave. MOVED (Mike Shreve/Chad Clements) and PASSED that the Community Connections Committee Report be accepted. MOVED (Wayne Fevens/Wayne Marriott) and passed that the Leadership Development Report be accepted. MOVED (John Pierce/Paul Bannister) and PASSED that the Kingswood Camp Society Report and Financial Statements be accepted.

MOVED (John Pierce/Wayne Merrill) and PASSED that the Report of the Kingswood Camp Executive Director, Nichole Metcalfe, be received. Alan Haley explained that Nikki was attending a Youth Conference in NB this weekend, so was absent from EVBA with Board permission.

The Moderator invited the Past Moderator, Dr. Allison Trites, to present the Nominating Committee Report ((cf., 2nd page of Supplement to the 2015 Fall Reports). Allison noted those who are newly nominated. John Pierce

-4- noted the following changes to the Kingswood Camp list: 1. Paul Bannister’s telephone number needs to be changed to 844-0265; 2. Ms Ronda Henry from A-DAssociation is no longer a member; 3. Dale Jollymore (Lawrencetown) 584-3229, from A-DAssociation is a member. It was duly MOVED (Allison Trites/John Pierce) and PASSED that the amended Nominating Committee Report be adopted. MOVED (John Bartol/Mike Shreve) and PASSED that the 2014 Financial Statement of the Rev. Don Ehler Memorial Chaplaincy Fund (cf. Supplement last page), submitted by David Rafuse, be adopted. MOVED (Wayne Marriott/Bud Rafuse) and PASSED that the Stewardship Committee Report (cf., p. 19) be accepted. The Moderator invited Wayne Marriott, in the absence of the Treasurer, Gillian Mitchell, to present the Treasurer’s Report (cf., pages 21-23 at the back of the Report Book). It was noted that $17.00 per person on average in attendance at a Sunday Worship Service; is payable to the EVBA. Since many churches delay contributions to the EVBA until December the report on page 23 shows income from only seventeen member churches. MOVED (Wayne Marriott/Charlene Reid) and PASSED that the Treasurer’s Reports be accepted. MOVED (Wayne Marriott/Wayne Fevens) and PASSED that the 2016 EVBA Budget of $45,500.00 (cf., page 24) be adopted. Wayne Marriott, whose term with the Stewardship Committee has now concluded, reminded those present that Gillian Mitchell agreed to serve as Treasurer provided someone else spoke in public regarding her reports. Therefore, a new spokesperson needs to be appointed. The Moderator invited Rev. John Eichhorn to speak regarding the Atlantic Baptist Foundation. He reminded those present that thanks to the willingness of Atlantic Baptists to invest their money with the Atlantic Baptist Foundation at a competitive interest rate, currently 3%, member churches have been able to secure loans for capital purposes and mortgages for the purchase of land and construction of new buildings. He placed ABF Brochures on the Book Exchange table and encouraged folk to pick one up, Gail Cook gave Wayne Marriott an opportunity to speak about the homes for seniors throughout the Maritimes that are owned and operated by the Atlantic Baptist Senior Citizens’ Homes, Inc. The closest one is the Gladys Manning Retirement Community in Windsor, NS. Gail Cook expressed thanks to Rev. Janet Baker, and her congregation at Harmony Baptist for hosting the fall EVBA. She then invited Rev. Wayne Merrill and Dr. Allison Trites to the platform, and she proceeded to transfer the responsibility of Moderator to Wayne Merrill. Dr. Allison Trites expressed thanks to Gail Cook for her two years of leadership with the EVBA and then proceeded to offer prayer for the EVBA leaders and the new Moderator. On invitation it was duly MOVED (Betty Parker) and PASSED that we adjourn.

Moderator Wayne Merrill offered a grace and a benediction. The Laurel Ladies Liturgical Movement Group, of which Gail Cook is the Director, had assembled across the front of the sanctuary dressed in their gowns, and as Rev. Karen Doucette, accompanied by Bonita Sanford on

the keyboard, sang the Lord’s Prayer, the Laurel Ladies presented their sacred motions in unison. It was a magnificent conclusion to a great morning.

-5- By 12:30 p.m. there was a movement of people from the sanctuary to the Harmony Hall where a lunch of soups and sandwiches along with a choice of desserts and beverages was provided by the folk from Harmony Baptist Church.

Moderator’s Report May 2016

There are good things happening in our Eastern Valley Baptist Association! We need to let people know this. Since becoming Moderator last November I have had the opportunity to meet with many of our Committees and be a part of their visioning for the future. The Chaplaincy committee has worked hard to find a new chaplain for Dykeland Lodge in Windsor. Kayla Colford is our new chaplain in this facility. Our chaplains, Kayla Colford at Dykeland Lodger and Sara Scott at the Berwick Manor are doing excellent work and are greatly appreciated by the homes where they minister. I am very thankful for them and for our Chaplaincy Committee that oversees this ministry. Our Kingswood Camp has had another successful year of ministry under the direction of Nicole Metcalfe. The new Worship and Activity Centre at Kingswood Camp is taking shape and the Kingswood camp Committee is looking forward to the possibilities it will bring for new ministry at the Camp. We hope to hold our November meeting in this new facility!

Our Leadership and Development Committee held an excellent Conference entitled “Making an Impact.” They continue to interview and encourage students who are on the track to ordination and recommend them to us for an Association license.

-7-

The Missions Committee has made a new start and are looking at ways to promote missions in our Association. I look forward to what ideas they will come up with for the future. They also meet with churches that have a vision for new ministries and help them apply for Ministry Initiative Grants from our Convention. Our Community Connections committee is looking for new ways to help facilitate evangelism and social action in our communities. I have also met with our Stewardship Committee and they are wrestling with finding ways to promote the work we do together and raise badly needed funds to support it. You will hear from them how we are in great need of funds if we are to continue the work we are doing together. Our nominating committee is also hard at work seeking to fill positions which are vacant. There are good things happening! All Committees are active and looking for ways to be of service to our churches. Please pray for them. Thank you to all who have taken on a role in our Association. I look forward to working with you! Blessings Wayne Merrill

Stewardship Committee Report The Stewardship Committee has met once since November, 2015. Those in attendance in March 2016 were Rev. Wayne Merrill, Gillian Mitchell, Laurie Hennigar, Allison Magee and Brent Reid. After reviewing the financial reports for the past year we are concerned that giving from our churches is declining to the point that it may mean we have to cut back some present ministries if the situation does not improve. It was noted that with the decline of giving from member churches there is only enough funds for approximately two more years at the current funding structure. After two years, if there is not improvement, the amount of support to the Chaplaincy Fund and Kingswood Camp may have to be reduced. It was also noted that maybe the church congregations are not well enough informed of the reason for support to the EVBA and possibly that could be a reason of the decline of support. The Committee discussed ways we might raise awareness and funds. Below are some ideas: Starting a face book page to help inform churches and church members: We all thought this would be a great idea as more people continue to source this type of media to be informed. We are looking into setting this up.

Doing a short information video: The thoughts behind this was if we did a short video highlighting our ministries, perhaps Pastors would share this video in their churches to help better inform congregations the work done by the EVBA and the need for funding. Fund raisers: Encourage churches to do one fund raiser a year and designated money raised from this event go the EVBA. A letter will be sent to the churches to highlight the importance of the work we do together in the EVBA and to encourage them to be involved.

EVBA Council has decided to hold an Association wide music night in the near future. Our churches will be invited to participate with special music of choirs, groups, solos, etc. The offering will go to Association. We hope all will get behind this idea and come together for a time of fellowship and music. Sincerely, Brent Reid on behalf of EVBA Stewardship Committee

Eastern Valley Baptist Association Leadership Committee Report

During the 1st quarter of 2016 our Leadership Committee met several times to plan our annual Leadership Conference. The main focus of our meetings was to finalize plans for our “Pastors and Leaders Conference” to be hosted by the Centreville Baptist Church on March 5th. We are grateful to the Centreville Baptist Church for allowing us to meet in their facility and also to their worship team for providing an opportunity to sing. We also would like to offer a Big Thank-you” to the people who provided a great lunch.

Rev. Thelma McLeod opened the conference with a meaningful devotional.

The theme of the conference was “Making an Impact”.

Rev. Dr. John McNally spoke on the topic of “Making an Impact in the Church”. His presentation focused on how we can communicate with one another in such a way that would create a caring and supportive atmosphere. He offered some very interesting illustrations. Dr. McNally also divided congregation into small groups for discussion and asked everyone to share what creative ideas for outreach in their communities

Rev. Darren Millett – New Life Community Church, outside of Halifax in Hatchet Lake spoke on “Making an Impact in the Community”. He stated that over the last few years his church has really grown. He described the various ways the church was making connections with the families who have no church affiliation. He suggested the importance of creating a “user friendly” atmosphere where visitors felt welcome. For example – mid-way through the church service everyone breaks for coffee. Rev. Millett talked about many the many creative projects his church undertakes out in the communityR. The bottom line is that his congregation has heart for the lost and they give a great deal of their time, money and effort. It was a challenging presentation.

Dr. Harry Gardner spoke on “Making an Impact in the World”. As everyone knows Dr. Gardner has been involved in worldwide missions at every level. He has a great deal of experience with other cultures, denominations and Christian circles. He described what other Christian groups are doing in different parts of the world. He had interesting stories to tell. Dr. Gardner also highlighted the work of our Canadian Baptist Mission Board. He recognized that most of us may not be able to go and minister in the various parts of the world. However, we can help through giving generously to the ministries of those who do go. All three presenters gave us a lot of food for thought.

Unfortunately the snowy weather kept our keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Rhonda Y. Britton – Cornwallis Street Baptist Church from being able to attend the conference. Because of the snow she was unable to leave Halifax. The weather also lessened the attendance.

As you know, one of the important responsibilities of the Leadership Committee is to interview applicants who are seeking renewal of Association Licenses to Minister, new applicants for Association Licenses to Minister and Licenses to Lay Ministry.

On Friday, April 15th the Committee met with fourteen applicants in the Salsman Room at Acadia Divinity College. We greatly appreciate the College’s provision of a comfortable room.

The following received renewal Licenses to Minister:

Renewed Association License to Minister: Heather Card, Charlene Reid, Michael Shaw, Stephen Wheaton, Jennifer Smith, Christoph Deutschman and Richard Manuel

New Association License to Minister: Kayla Colford, Evan Colford, Daniel Zacharias

Renewed Church License to Minister: Linda Davidson Renewed Association Lay License to Minister: Isaac Russell, Mary Perkins, Laurie Perrin Respectfully Submitted; Rev. Wayne Fevens, Chairman

Kingswood Camp Report

Report of Kingswood Camp to the Eastern Valley and Annapolis-Digby Baptist Associations The Board of Directors and the Executive Director, Nichole Metcalfe, held the December 2015 board meeting in the form of a Christmas party to celebrate the birth of Christ and God’s blessing on the ministry of Kingswood Camp. The slideshow prepared by Nichole and David Longley presented scenes of campers participating in and enjoying the activities and programs of camp and chronicled the steady progress in the construction of the Worship and Activity Centre in exactly one year since the first tree was felled by the volunteers early in December, 2014. The slideshow brought to mind many reasons for which we were thankful to God:

*dedication of staff and volunteers who under the leadership of Nichole Metcalfe, ministered to over three hundred campers in the summer and over a thousand school campers in the spring of 2015; *generous donors who provided funds for the new building; *many volunteers who gave of their time and talents to help in the construction; *master builders Randy Aalders and John Hiltz who worked tirelessly since the first load of cement was poured. The building has passed every stage of inspection. In one of the reports, the inspector stated, in part, “…All lumber was sawn to true dimensions and of good quality. I was really impressed with quality of the workmanship and the extra effort to strengthen the building structure…”

The Board has continued to work through the winter months. In addition to meeting monthly to conduct camp business, the sub-committees: building, program and personnel, fund-raising, maintenance; the treasurer and the Executive Director all have been fulfilling their respective responsibilities.

The camp staff team is in place for the summer; camper registrations are coming in; camp facilities are functional thanks to regular upkeep and the relatively mild winter . Randy Aalders and John Hiltz have been working all through winter with occasional help from volunteers. I am pleased to report that to date at least 75 % of the Worship and Activity Centre is complete. I am hopeful that the building may be available for use this summer. We look forward to hosting the Fall EVBA meeting at Kingswood Camp.

Since the decision was made to build the Worship and Activity Centre, members of the Board have been considering ways that Kingswood Camp may better serve the ministry of Associations’ Churches. We have scheduled a visioning session on “Widening the Scope of Ministry of Kingswood Camp” at the AGM of the Kingswood Camp Society to be held at the Aylesford Baptist Church on Saturday April 16, 2016 starting at 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. We will also welcome any suggestions from individuals and churches on this topic. Sincerely, Vincent Leung, Chair, Kingswood Camp Board. [email protected]

EVBA Chaplaincy Committee Spring Report The Chaplaincy Committee has had a busy winter as we had to replace the Chaplain at Dykeland Lodge, due to illness of the Chaplain. We were blessed to have had interims of Rev. Dr. Marlene Knowles and Lic. Jennifer Smith. We have appreciated Wayne, our moderator and Ron, our Clerk for attending our meetings and showing an interest in the process of hiring a new Chaplain.

As of March 1, 2016 we welcomed Lic. Kayla Colford as Chaplain at Dykeland Lodge. The situation has changed at Dykeland. The Chaplain will once again be hired by EVBA and we will cooperate with Dykeland concerning every day concerns. We no longer are partnering with The Windsor Elms.

Kayla and her husband have been part time youth pastors at Berwick Baptist and will be both graduating with Masters of Divinity this Spring. Kayla has been doing part of her Mentoring year with Sarah at Grand View Manor and Sarah feels she has a passion for the elderly and would make a valuable contribution to Dykeland. After one month this is comment from the Activity Director at Dykeland, “I want you to know that I am so pleased to have Kayla as a part of our Recreation Team

here at Dykeland. She is doing very well. Kayla has a gentle way about her when she is with Residents

doing visitation and spiritual visits. She meets them on their level and gives them her undivided

attention.”

Rev. Sarah Scott continues to bless the residents at Grand View Manor and we are blessed to have her there. She has such a deep heart for those she serves.

You will meet both of our Chaplains today and you will feel their joy and love in their Calling to Minister to Seniors, Staff and Families and those in need of care.

We have received a Summer Grant from the Municipality of Kings for the summer of 2016 for $300.00. Rev. Sarah will make good use of the money. .

We continue to try and raise monies for the Rev. Dr. Dennis Veinotte Fund, The S and B Committee of the Wolfville Baptist Church held a coffee party in April and raised $790.00, which we appreciated. The approximate amount in the fund as of April is $17,300.00. We need $50,000.00 before we can draw the interest. So we have a long way to go.

The EVBA will have a Hymn Sing to raise money for Chaplaincy Expenses on June 5th, 6:30 at New Minas Baptist. This will help to pay for the brochures and salaries of the chaplains as the allotments from the Churches are not what they used to be. The Chaplaincy Committee really appreciates those who are working on this.

We have brochures for Grand View Manor and hopefully Dykeland Lodge, here today and if you want to take some for your Church, we would appreciate it.

The Committee has two concerns that will need to be addressed: The cost of Chaplaincy to

the EVBA. How will funds be raised to continue this important ministry?

We have 2 members of our committee that, because of health issues, wish to resign and

Carol Anne’s term was up at the beginning of this year and mine is at the end of 2017. We are

in trouble as to the continuity of information to be passed on and we need more members. We have worked hard as a committee and I want to express my thanks to them all and to your

support of the ministry.

Respectfully submitted,

Rev. Liz Johnson, Chair

Community Connections Committee

A meeting was held in January with Wayne Merrill and Wayne Fevens to try to

determine what action our committee should be taking. No definite decision was made.

It seems that we are to disseminate information from the association to the churches,

probably related to social action and evangelism seeing as that is what our committee

once was, that is, those 2 committees before they were combined. Many of our

churches are already heavily involved in social action by sponsoring refugee families.

Hopefully this effort will have an evangelical aspect as well as we show the general

public how we care for people in desperate circumstances. Respectfully Submitted, Rev. Mike Shreve. Chair

EVBA’s Mission Committee Report April 4th, 2016 the Committee met and Charlene Reid agreed to accept the position of Chair and Tracey Kettley accepted the position of Secretary. Charlene Reid can be reached at [email protected] and Tracey Kettley can be reached at [email protected].

The Committee met twice in October 2015 to discuss two Ministerial Initiative Grants submitted by Upper Vaughans and Kempt United Baptist Churches. Upper Vaughans requested assistance to pay the salary of a Youth Pastor while Kempt requested money to pay for computers and related technology. The vision of both churches was to enhance and extend youth related programs. Kempt also planned implement a Musical

Praise Time bringing the young and older generations together. Both applications were successful.

The main focus of the Mission Committee is to promote Home Missions through the Ministerial Initiative Grants and support member churches in their mission related programs.

The Ministerial Initiative Grants are for a maximum of $6,000. Applicants are asked to provide a concrete vision and intentional strategy for the ministry the money is needed for, supporting documentation of church finances demonstrating financial need, and support from their congregations.

The application is submitted to the Mission Committee, who will review the application. A meeting with members of the applying church is arranged where the church has the opportunity to promote their vision. The Committee works with the church to ensure the application meets all the criteria for the Atlantic Baptist Mission Board of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches. The application is then forwarded to the Atlantic Baptist Mission Board of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches.

The Committee would like to encourage more churches to take advantage of this valuable resource. Churches who have received grants in the past have done wonderful work in forwarding their ministries in their churches and communities.

If your church is interested in this opportunity there will be a sign up sheet available at the May Association meeting. Updated Ministerial Initiative Grants forms should be available the end of June 2016. Last years forms are available for ideas on how and what is required in the application. For more information contact the Chair or Secretary.

The Mission Committee would appreciate it if all application could be submitted before September 19, 2016.

The Committee’s mandate is to promote Home Mission and Global Missions. If Churches would like help in promotion, rallies or planning events, contact the Chair or Secretary.

Respectively submitted by:

Charlene Reid – Chair

Tracey Kettley - Secretary
