  • Down Syndrome South Africa

    Working to improve the lives of people with down syndrome

    DSSA is a NGO and was formed in 1986 as the national umbrella organisation for the rights of people with Down syndrome and other learning disabilities. DSSA was founded by parents to people with learning disabilities (PWLD) that joint up in solidarity to create a strong community to help and protect each other's families and try to create better conditions for their children in South Africa.

    DSSA is committed to nding ways to improve the quality of life al all persons with intellectual disabilities, promoting the idea that they have the right to live with independency, dignity, respect and security as valued children and adults and full citizens in society. DSSA has fought hard to become an organisation not only for white and wealthy families affected by a learning disability but for all families affected by a learning disability regardless of colour or income.

    DSSA is committed to nding ways to improve the quality of life al all persons with intellectual disabilities, promoting the idea that they have the right to live with independency, dignity, respect and security as valued children and adults and full citizens in society. DSSA has fought hard to become an organisation not only for white and wealthy families affected by a learning disability but for all families affected by a learning disability regardless of colour or income. It has been a focus point for DSSA since the beginning to be an organisation for all PWLD and their families despite that is has been a hard process. The constitution of DSSA has been aligned and new policies have been developed to bring about more unied approach to benet all in the branches and DSSA at the national level. The policies have been adopted and implemented by all branches so DSSA and the branches are better able to reach out to all families affected by learning disability.

    In DSSA branches and in DSSA on a national level the main activities are support and counselling for the parents and PWLD, advocacy and lobbying, and facilitation national activities such as the

    rdInternational Day of the Disabled 3 December annually.

    We work directly with people in the poverty stricken and rural areas. We supply support and care services to people with Down syndrome, other intellectual disabilities and their families. Support is offered at high levels in terms of empowering members through training sessions on issues relating to Down syndrome, new parent support, early interventeducion, ation, self advocacy, employment, accessing grants, medical care and education.

    Our Key focus areas are:

    The establishment of parent support groups and community development projects in the

    impoverished area of our country;

    The empowerment of families of persons with intellectual disabilities through the dissemination of

    information, by means of printed materials, workshops and talks;

    The establishment of forceful parent lobby and advocacy group which has been able to bring

    about changes in national and provincial policy in favour of persons with intellectual disabilities;th The raising of public awareness in both urban and rural areas specically around the 20 October

    st National Down Syndrome Awareness Day and 21 March World Down Syndrome Day;

    To promote the inclusion of people with Down syndrome into various sectors of the community.

DSSA has fought hard to become an organisation not only for white and wealthy families affected by a learning disability but for all families affected by a learning disability regardless of colour or income.

It has been a focus point for DSSA since the beginning to be an organisation for all PWLD and their families despite that is has been a hard process. The constitution of DSSA has been aligned and new policies have been developed to bring about more unied approach to benet all in the branches and DSSA at the national level. The policies have been adopted and implemented by all branches so DSSA and the branches are better able to reach out to all families affected by learning disability.

    In DSSA branches and in DSSA on a national level the main activities are support and counselling for the parents and PWLD, advocacy and lobbying, and facilitation national activities such as the

    rdInternational Day of the Disabled 3 December annually.

    We work directly with people in the poverty stricken and rural areas. We supply support and care services to people with Down syndrome, other intellectual disabilities and their families. Support is offered at high levels in terms of empowering members through training sessions on issues relating to Down syndrome, new parent support, early interventeducion, ation, self advocacy, employment, accessing grants, medical care and education.

    Our Key focus areas are:

    The establishment of parent support groups and community development projects in the

    impoverished area of our country;

    The empowerment of families of persons with intellectual disabilities through the dissemination of

    information, by means of printed materials, workshops and talks;

    The establishment of forceful parent lobby and advocacy group which has been able to bring

    about changes in national and provincial policy in favour of persons with intellectual disabilities;th The raising of public awareness in both urban and rural areas specically around the 20 October

    st National Down Syndrome Awareness Day and 21 March World Down Syndrome Day;

    To promote the inclusion of people with Down syndrome into various sectors of the community.
