CELEBRATE EASTER THE DANISH WAY Easter in Denmark marks the end of the cold winter months and the beginning of spring. Many

of us celebrate this traditionally Christian holiday by opening up our holiday homes, gardening,

planting window boxes and preparing for the warm summer ahead. Easter allows five consec-

utive holidays, and as a number of schools also give children the remaining three days during

Holy Week off, this can amount to ten consecutive days of holiday – an ideal time for a family

getaway.

Many homes and shops are decorated for Easter in green and yellow, especially with new-leaved

branches and daffodils, much in the spirit of the new life that spring brings. Many Danes consid-

er this time of year the ideal time to spend with family, as they welcome in the warmer spring

months. Family vacations and Easter lunches are the order of the season. Today, only a small

minority of the Danish population recognise the religious practices of this period.

The Danes also celebrate Easter by observing a unique tradition; The Danish Easter tradition of

teaser letters (gækkebreve). This is both an Easter tradition for children as well as adults - all can

participate in the guessing game. In the weeks before Easter, children cut out elaborate letters,

on which they write a so-called teaser verse, sent to their loved ones. The letter is anonymous,

but signed with the number of dots corre-

sponding to the number of letters in the

sender’s name, so that the recipient has a

chance of guessing who sent it. This was

born out of the German tradition of knot

letters. They were sent in Denmark from

1600 to 1800, and the tradition was for the

receiver of the letter to loosen the knot or

solve a riddle that was placed in the letter.

TAKE A TRIP OR EXPLORE YOUR CITY In Copenhagen, whilst there are many ac-

tivities and events for the whole family dur-

ing the Easter break, the city and much of

Denmark closes its doors, as many shops

are closed on 2, 3, 5, and 6 April. Whilst

Denmark takes a short break before the

summer festivities begin, Sweden is a-buzz

with activity during the Easter period, and

for those of you looking to get away, Swe-

den is the ideal location to spend time with

loved ones. The commercial hub of Malmö

is a short 45 minute train ride from Copen-

hagen, or you can take a ferry from Hel-

singør to Helsingbørg, and enjoy all that

Sweden has to offer this Easter.

For those who are not taking the short

trip across to Sweden, or to other holiday

destinations, there is much to see and do

in Copenhagen over Easter. So once your

homes have been decorated, church cel-

ebrations concluded, indulgences in deli-

cious chocolate eggs satisfied, and teaser

letters sent, why not explore what you and

your family can get up to in and around

the city.

there is to see and do this Easter break,

both in Copenhagen and your shopping

destination of choice, Sweden.

If Easter is a time for holiday, and your ide-

al form of relaxation is a little retail therapy,

then Sweden is the place to be!

SHOPPING CENTRES IN MALMÖIn Malmö, there are plenty of options for peo-

ple who want to do all their shopping in one

place to save time and their legs. The city has

a number of large, newly-renovated shopping

centres with pleasant indoor environments

and restaurants that add a little extra to your

shopping experience.

In recent years, several new shopping centres

have opened in Malmö, while the existing

centres have been fixed up and renovated to

take on the increased competition. This has

made Malmö a real shopping gem!

The latest addition is Emporia in Hyllie,

which, with its almost 200 shops and twenty

or so cafés and restaurants, is Malmö’s larg-

est marketplace. Behind the beautiful, curved

glass facade you’ll find everything you could

possibly desire in terms of shopping, spread

over three floors. In the heart of the city you’ll

find the pedestrian zone favourites Åhléns

and Hansa citygalleria, whose exclusive at-

mosphere pervades all of the 60 shops in the

building. Whilst at Triangeln station, you’ll

find a shopping centre – also called Triangeln

- just 20 metres from the station entrance,

boasting 150 shops, cafés and restaurants.

Most shopping centres are open until seven

or eight in the evening on weekdays, five on

Saturday and four on Sunday. See the individ-

ual shopping center websites for more infor-

mation and for Eater holiday trading hours.

CITY SHOPPING IN LUNDLund’s inviting city centre has an impressive

number of shops offering a widely varied

selction. Pleasant shopping streets include

Lilla Fiskaregatan, Klostergatan, Skomaka-

regatan and Stora Södergatan. If speciality

shopping is what you are after then Saluhal-

len in Lund is where you will find it. Some of

the city’s best specialty shops for food, drinks

and delicacies - and restaurants with truly ex-

citing and exotic cuisine are on offer in this

part of the city.

HIGH-END FASHION IN HELSINGBORGHelsingborg is traditionally seen as an old

commercial city and is faithful to this history.

It also caters for a wide range of shopping

tastes and needs. Shopping in the city cen-

tre offers a blend of large and small shops in

a delightful urban environment on Sweden’s

oldest pedestrianised street. Väla shopping

centre is located on the outskirts of Hels-

ingborg and offers indoor shopping in well-

known chain stores and large department

stores including Ikea, Coop and Biltema in

the surrounding area. Helsingborg is also

known for its wide array of the most up-to-

date fashion stores. Most of the nationwide

chains are represented, but also trendy spe-

cialist shops with the hottest brands from the

catwalks in Milan and London are on offer.

Helsingborg has a leading position in terms

of fashion, and only Stockholm and Göteborg

can offer similar opportunities.

Väla, one a Scandinavia´s biggest shopping

centres, is located just outside Helsingborg.

It is a paradise for shoppers, offering flexi-

ble and inspiring shopping, and 47,000 m2 of

shops under one roof! Familia Shopping Cen-

tre is a lovely new shopping centre located in Hyllinge outside Helsingborg. It has more than 50 shops in fashion, home & interior decoration, electronics, sports and hobby, chemist´s shops and much more. There is also lots of fun activities for the children.

If the hustle and bustle of city shopping is not your style, then the charming and tradi-tional town of Höganäs offers shops with a personal service. Stroll along Storgatan and be inspired by traditional and modern shops. Stop for a coffee before continuing west in the direction of the sea to Köpmansgatan where you will find everything from culinary delicacies to books, fashion and interior dec-oration with that little bit extra. Enjoy food and drink with beautiful views in our lovely harbour, and don´t miss Höganäs Design Outlet with well-known brands of pottery, glass, shoes and clothes. Höganäs is located just north of Helsingborg along a fantastic

stretch of coast.

Easter is a beautiful time in our city, and there are lots of activities and events for the whole family to enjoy over the Easter break. Most shops are closed during Easter, but restau-rants and attractions for both you and your kids are open.

Trees and flowers are blooming and flea mar-kets are opening all across Copenhagen, if you are not spending time in your own garden or not planning on making the trip to Sweden, why not consider one for the many events tak-ing place in and around the city:

TIVOLI GARDENS IN 2015In 2015, Tivoli Gardens opens its doors to the longest summer season ever in Tivoli Gardens, with many exciting international events. The opening of the old amusement park on the first of April means that the gardens are open during the Easter holidays. Thus Tivoli will be dressed for Easter, the rides and restaurants will be open and there will be special activities for kids. Entrance is free for children under the age of eight, whilst adults pay 90DKK.

DIRTY DANCINGExperience one of the world’s greatest roman-tic phenomenons, Dirty Dancing The Musical, live in Copenhagen. Have the time of your life with the musical version of the 80’s classic film Dirty Dancing, now staged in the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen with a genuine star cast of Danish actors, singers and dancers. Actress Mathilde Norholt has the female lead role as Frances “Baby” Houseman and dancer Silas Holst has the male lead role as Johnny Castle. You will also find Karina Frimodt, Claus Bue, Laura Drasbæk, Robert Hansen, James Samp-son and Line Krogholm on stage with a large ensemble and orchestra. GLASS ART WORKSHOP AT GLASSTUENGlasstuen is definitely well worth a visit and

during the Easter holiday your children can

create a piece of glass art on their own with

the help from the owner Karen Horsholt. Ka-

ren sells fused glass art, including dishes, pic-

tures, figures, houses etc. The workshop is for

children above seven years of age, and it is for

free. The workshop runs from 01/04/2015 -

03/04/2015, from 10:30 - 17:00.

ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR IN HIRTSHALSMany talented local artisans presents their

products at this traditional arts and crafts mar-

ket. You will have the opportunity to chat with

the artisans, learn a little of their techniques and

to purchase a work of art. Local food producers

/ retailers offer tastings and have their high qual-

ity products for sale and it all adds up in a nice

atmosphere. From 02/04/2015 - 03/04/2015, at

Den Svenske Sømandskirke, from 11:00 in the

morning until 16:00 in the afternoon.

EASTER EGG HUNTTake your family on a treasure hunt in the

Easter break at Visit Carlsberg, and participate

in a competition to win a dray horse as a cud-

dly toy and 1kg of liquorice from Lakrids by

Johan Brülow. With a treasure map in your

hand, you visit the exhibitions and the area at

your own pace. When you purchase a ticket

for the exhibition, it is free to participate in

the Easter treasure hunt, get a ride in a horse-

drawn carriage and use the Easter letter work-

shop.

There is much to see and do in Sweden this

Easter, and with the cities of Malmö and Hel-

singbørg a short train or ferry ride away from

ACROSS THE SEA IN HELSINGBØRGHelsingör (Elsinore) is the gateway to Hels-

ingbørg because of the beautiful ferry con-

nection that runs between the two cities. It´s

just 20 minutes by boat between the cities of

Helsingbørg and Helsingør - between Sweden

and Denmark. Buy your ticket on the ferry to

Helsingbørg, and enjoy the view and the food

onboard over as many trips there and back as

you like. Then you’ll just hop off in Helsingbørg

when you are ready to explore the city itself.

In Helsingbørg the sea is never far away. Salty

spray and sand between your toes are part of

everyday life during the summer months. Each

summer the city organises a big festival free

of charge, the Helsingbørg festival, with music,

food and entertainment. But also during the

rest of the year you can find a wide variety

of culture, food, sport and experiences in Hel-

singbørg.

A stone’s throw from the sea you’ll find the

architecturally celebrated areas of Norra

Hamnen and Dunkers Kulturhus. Here you’ll

find art and history exhibitions, music, theatre

and restaurants. Close to Dunkers you’ll find

Helsingbørg’s concert hall with its own sym-

phony orchestra and Helsingbørg’s city theatre

with several stages. If you’d like to dance, go

to a concert or maybe see stand-up comedy,

then Helsingbørg is the city for you. There are

several clubs, bars and places to go dancing if

you’re looking for good nightlife.

HAPPENING OVER EASTERTake a trip to the Louisiana Museum of

Modern Art in Humlebæk

Visit Louisiana together with Copenhagen

Art Meetup and Malmö Internationals, and

enjoy the exhibitions and spring surroundings.

The Museum has a cafe and a nice park with

sculptures, and a view of Øresund to the island

of Hven/Ven.
