FROM THE GROUND UP: FOUNDATIONBy: Scott Bartlow // Edmond Campus Pastor

you know, the building of Crossings Edmond from the ground up is underway. Multiple things are important in the early days of any building project. However, if you ask any builder, he will tell you the most important thing is a proper

foundation. The foundation keeps out moisture, insulates against the cold, and resists movement from the earth around it.

As I’m learning about foundations, I’m realizing a good foundation is not just about digging a hole and pouring some concrete into certain forms. Every site is unique and needs to be tailored and customized to account for unique soil conditions, water tables, etc. A great and properly installed foundation sets the tone for the rest of the build. This is also true for the church!

Jesus instructs us with these wise words: Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

– Matthew 7:24-27

As we, literally, have poured our foundation at 1500 W. Covell Road, I’m reminded that we are also building the spiritual foundation of Crossings Edmond. In Matthew 7, Jesus teaches us that true wisdom comes from trusting in Him and His word. If we build our lives on the basis of God’s truth, then we will be able to persevere no matter what life brings. We have the opportunity to lay the proper foundation which was poured out for us by Jesus. We are now instructed to go and do likewise. Crossings Edmond, let’s be a church that not only hears God’s words but puts them into practice.

I dream of the day when we see every heart in every home know the hope of Jesus Christ. Why? Because I believe life is better with Jesus at the center. This is the foundation upon which our church is built.

Please join with me in praying that we will continue to lay the spiritual foundation of building Christ-centered people who gather together, center on Jesus, serve the city of Edmond and impact our world.

God designed us with such beauty, precision and intentionality that He gave us each our own unique DNA—the same is true for our church. With the launch of our new campus in the horizon, we believe it’s critical to develop our Crossings Edmond DNA—focused on relationships. So, be sure to invite your friends and join us for these

Scott is originally from Oklahoma City. He has previously worked at Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois as the Pastor of Outreach and, more recently, as Evangelism & Leadership Development Pastor at Church of the Servant in OKC. He graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a B.A. in Interpersonal Communication. He has a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University, and PhD in Leadership from Tennessee Temple University.

Scott and his wife Brooke have one daughter, Faith, and are expecting baby Mae in March. He loves Starbucks iced chai, a great movie, riding his bike, and a good laugh, and he’s not afraid to poke fun at himself.

When asked about his vision for Crossings Edmond, he says, “I dream of the day where we see every heart in every home know the hope of Jesus Christ. I envision the presence of Christ taking root in the marketplace, soccer fields, boardrooms, classrooms, and playgrounds all throughout Edmond.”

Prior to coming to Crossings, Jeremiah worked at Life.Church in South Oklahoma City. Before that, he was in the Marine Corps Infantry for eight years. He has a Bachelors of Science from Liberty University, a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology from Liberty Theological Seminary, and is currently working on a Doctorate of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. He considers C.S. Lewis and Dietrich Bonhoeffer distant mentors.

Jeremiah loves to travel—even for a quick weekend getaway; he’s been to 10 different countries. He and his son Mason both collect toys and enjoy spending time together traveling, fishing, and watching cartoons. He also enjoys writing and coaching Mason’s baseball team.

He’s very excited to be at Crossings because his passion is reaching out to the marginalized in our society and leading others to do the same. He says, “The Community Center is slowly but surely positioning itself to make a huge impact in the lives of those in our community who need a little help, all for the glory of God!”

P.J. Flores served as the Elementary Pastor at Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church for the past eight years before coming to Crossings. He was born and raised in Macon, Georgia—his accent is a dead giveaway!

He and his wife Heather have been married for 21 years and have three children: Braxton (17), Breighton (12) and Briley Claire (9). He says his family is his greatest earthly gift and his greatest ministry. He loves college football, sweet tea, and the SEC.

P.J. has created an education program that reached 17,000 children each week. He is excited to be at Crossings and “have the opportunity to create an environment where Jesus comes to life so it will resonate in the hearts of the next generation.”

STAFF SPOTLIGHTSince Summer 2015, our Ministry Staff has continued to grow, so we’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our seven newest members.

Josiah was born and raised in Jenks, Oklahoma. He has three sisters, three nephews and two nieces. He played baseball in college and loves roller coasters.

He came to Crossings after working for three years as a business attorney in Oklahoma City. He spent the last six years in part-time student ministry and ultimately believed vocational ministry was the calling placed on his life. Josiah is passionate about finding creative ways for students to experience the overwhelming love of Jesus.

Nicole, born in Philadelphia, PA, moved to Oklahoma when she was 10. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2006 and worked in finance for several years before going into full-time ministry. She was employed at the OKC campus of Life.Church before coming to Crossings. Nicole and her husband Jeremy have a six-year-old daughter Ella.

She loves to travel and has a bucket list of places she’d like to visit in the next 10 years. She’s crossed off three items on her list in the past two years and can’t wait to see more of God’s creation.

She says, “I love this church and all it has to offer. The way Crossings has maintained such a small church atmosphere while still growing leaps and bounds amazes me every week. I am excited to see how God uses me to grow the early childhood ministry, developing children and leaders into who God has called them to be.”

Leah is a Texas girl, born and raised. She met Jesus in a church pew in Forney, TX and now clings to His Word daily. She deeply values being a follower of Christ, the beauty of friendship, leadership, and a good cup of coffee.

She is the baby of her family with two older brothers and an older sister. Her parents have been the biggest blessing in her life–their selflessness, acts of service, words of affirmation, and unwavering support have shaped who she is today. While in high school, she competed in Powerlifting—growing up with brothers and a football coach for a dad, she really had no choice, but to her surprise, loved every minute of it.

She is excited to be on the College and Young Adults Ministry Team because “It’s a work I love … From planning events, discipling college girls, and doing graphics and social media–I get to see firsthand people come to Christ and watch the power of the gospel work in people’s lives conforming them into the image of Christ.”

Evan grew up in Wichita, Kansas (as an OU fan) and attended Manhattan Christian College. He went on to Phoenix, Arizona where he worked at Christ’s Church of the Valley for three years until moving to Oklahoma City and Crossings.

His mother and step-father live in Wichita, Kansas. His father and step-mother live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His older brother and only sibling (Jordan) lives in Kansas City, MO. He has two giant and lovable Rottweilers named Booger and Jax, and says they are the best dogs ever.

Evan “absolutely loves the foundation of community that Crossings is built on. I have seen coaches developing relationships with their small groups in our Student Ministry, and the community just continues to build and grow deeper. I am excited to be here because I get to see how God is using middle school students to impact the world around them with His love today, tomorrow, and ten years from now.”

WE’RE MOVING…from crossingsokc.org TO CROSSINGS.CHURCH!As we have been preparing to launch our new campus in Edmond, we’ve realized that our domain (web address) is specific to Oklahoma City (OKC). In addition to this, we’ve learned that over 80% of people who are searching for our church website are searching for “Crossings Church”. With these two things in mind, we are making this simple move EASTER WEEK. Don’t worry though—we still own crossingsokc.org and it will continue to redirect all traffic to crossings.church. You can use either address—and it will all land in the same place: CROSSINGS.CHURCH.

A great place during the week to meet friends or enjoy some quiet time.

Open weekdays and Sundays in Crossings Atrium.
