This appear to be a night that has no commitments and most people are arriving about the 28th April 2015. For those present in Newcastle suggest a BBQ following the Meeting at the caravan Park. This would mean that the schedule Meeting for the 20th April would be cancelled and the 29th April 2015 would replace it. BULLETIN EDITOR APRIL – Lion Marge Ollis Hi all This year Easter was celebrated at the beginning of April with Anzac Day towards the end of April. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter celebrating with family and friends.
I have included some ANZAC tributes from Lionsonoz members. Stewart and I have just returned from the MD Lions Convention in wet Newcastle. The weather did not mar the happy hours and fellowship with other members of the Lions family. A side trip to Boggabri Lions Club Drover’s Camp Fire prior to the Convention, where a number of Lions from the Vanners Club and Lionsonoz were in attendance. Stewart & Gwyneth had a hectic time booking vans in and at times was trying because of the soggy showground, but heads were down and everything worked out fine. Stewart and I had an enjoyable time getting to know Jeff and Lynne Mott and his “pig”. A great roast lamb meal.
Our Changeover Meeting was held at the Caravan Park in Stockton, followed by our evening meal at the local Pub to help celebrate the birthday of Marjorie Haines. This month we welcome the new Lionsonoz Committee for 2015– 2016 and thank the past Committee for their leadership during 2014 – 2015.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Dear Australian Lionsonoz Members
Thank you for your trust in me by electing me President for the 2015/6
Year, it is indeed an honour to follow on the great work and standards
achieved by my predecessors.
I would like to congratulate President Neil and his Executive for all of their efforts in the
year just gone. I would also like to thank Lion Pauline for all the support given to President
Neil in some most trying times.
There were 18 Lions and Partners who attended the Convention at Newcastle, it was great
to see so many of our club supporting our cause and learning something new and
refreshing on old policies and systems. Well done!!!
Lion Hazel and I are looking forward to our own Convention in Moree in October.

The Newcastle Multiple District Convention was very interesting on a lot of different levels. We had some great times and lots of fun with the Lions Vanners Club. We also had 18 Lions representing Australian Lionsonoz plus 2 partners, I expect other than the organising Lions Club we had the greatest representation.
As usual the Youth of the Year was amazing and the Leo’s were just incredible. The business sessions as always were interesting and the Results of the Notices of Motion are as follows:

Membership Chairman’s Report– Lion Stewart Payne
We have had 4 new enquiries from Lions who are looking to travel, information has been sent to them and we are looking forward to their reply. The Changeover night was again very good, only some small computer hiccups. PCC Lion Ian Gammage did an excellent job of installing the new executive and I think that he enjoyed the strangeness of the night. As usual it was fun with those Australian Lionsonoz Members present and as usual instead of concentrating on the meeting (which I’m sure they all do diligently while at home and in their Caravan) they were chatting with each other. A very chatty mob when they get together in one room.
Please remember to wear your lapel pin every day!

Recycling — Ring pulls Lion Brenda Payne
We have had a few enquiries from the general public about the ring pulls and
information has been sent to them, as usual we have to point out to them that we
do not dispose of them ourselves we pass them on to a Lions Club such as Inverell McIntyre Lions
Club.

CLUB CARE REPORT MARCH 2015 - Lion Sandra Philippzig
Lion Sandra Philippzig has taken over the Club Care Reporting. Some will already have had good
will messages for Birthdays and Anniversaries.
I do not have any report this month from Lion Sandra.

Report on the 63rd M.D. 201 National
Convention, held in Newcastle from the
1 - 4th May 2015.
The registration and setting up of Information booths for the
convention [including the Autism booth with its baskets of
delicious chocolates provided as an enticement by Elvio] took
place on the afternoon of Thursday 1st May in the Newcastle City
Hall.
That evening various functions, which included a “Meet and
Greet”, a Council Chairpersons Dinner and a Lioness Dinner
were held. We had chosen to register for “Home Hospitality “so
we joined a group of 20 Lions who were transported to Valentine
Bowling Club by members of Valentine Lions club for a most
enjoyable evening meal and social programme.
On Friday morning the Convention commenced at the historic
and beautifully preserved Civic Theatre in the centre of
Newcastle, with the “ Opening and Flag “ ceremonies. The
Convention was opened by the Immediate Past International
President Barry Palmer A.M. Barry’s short address was
preceded by a wonderful presentation by the C.E.O. of “Beyondblue” Georgie Harmon, who was also
presented with a cheque for $5,000.
A very moving Remembrance Ceremony was conducted after the lunch break, and then the first Business
Session of the Convention was held.
On Friday evening the District Dinners were held at the Newcastle Jockey Club in various adjoining rooms.
N1 and N5 were together so we were able to enjoy a fun night!
Saturday commenced with the National Youth of the Year Final which attained its usual high standard. The
Q. Districts Representative Russell Watt, was the overall winner with the N. Districts, represented by the
Inverell based N1. Contestant, Hannah Worsley, the Public Speaking Winner.
After the lunch break L.C.I.F. Chairperson Barry Palmer OAM delivered the Key Note Address. This was
followed by various presentations and another Business Session which incorporated three different Forum
discussion groups.
The Saturday evening outing was to the Harness Racing Club for a “Night at the Trots “. Despite torrential
rain we had a great night, the venue, food and company were.
Sundays programme commenced with the final of the “Leo of the Year National Quest “, each state was
represented and the public speaking and overall winner was Katerina Blecic from South Australia/
Northern Territory. During our many years of attending conventions we have noticed the gradual rise in
standard of this contest with several Australian Leos winning the International Competition, the Leo’s
committee are doing a wonderful job. This competition was followed by the presentation of 12 “Outstanding
Achievement Awards “. The “ Newcastle Ukestra“, a ukelale band, then entertained us until the lunch
break .
During this lunch break the Forum on Autism entitled “Changing the Outcome”, was presented by our
“heroes’! We believe the Forum was an outstanding success.
When we returned after lunch the short video segments submitted by clubs competing for the “Happiest
Club“ award were shown, with the worthy winner being the Lion’s club of North Lakes Qld. Many awards
and special information segments followed, these included “Hope to See You in Echuca in 2016 “presented
by the Multiple District Convention Committee for 2016.
The “Black Diamond Ball” was held that evening at the Panthers Club auditorium. The entertainment and
venue were excellent.
As we were not required to open the Autism display stall on Monday morning we decided to return to Sydney
and not attend the final Convention Sessions, it was raining when we left Newcastle so to be greeted by
sunshine when we arrived at Lugarno was a delightful surprise!
As usual we had a lovely week, we spent four days at Stockton Caravan Park with our Lionsonoz friends and
the Lion’s Vanners club, as well as four days staying in Newcastle at the Crown Plaza Hotel. We were able to
help with the manning of the Autism stall and as usual this was a rewarding experience.

50 YEARS AT GOONDIWINDI QLD — LION WAYNE BANKS Dear Cabinet Secretary The Goondiwindi Lions Club (Qld) will be celebrating the 50thAnniversary of its Charter and I was hoping that you would pass on this date-claimer email to the clubs in your District, for the weekend of 12thand 13th September 2015. We have had many members and made many friends over the years and we would like to spread the word about a chance to catch up with old friends in a weekend of fellowship. While we will be having a dinner on the Saturday night, there will be other events happening in the town as well which everyone will be welcome to go along to: A Junior Golfing Tournament, Macintyre Aero Club Fly-in, Open Gun Shoot, XXXX Cup Races, Dragon Boat Races, and the annual Gourmet in Gundy. We will also be unveiling of our 50th Anniversary commemorative Giant Murray Cod on the Sunday morning.

MY KNITTING REPORT FOR APRIL, 2015
How do you like my new creation “FOOTY PUSSY?”
The little fellow in the top right corner is a fan of St.
George – Dragons and just imagine the envy of all
the other spectators at a Footy match when you
arrive with your “FOOTY PUSSY” on your shoulder.
You may recall that in
our last Bulletin I gave
the directions on how to
make these little
critters. It’s just so easy
and there are many
different ways to dress
them up. Did anyone
give it a go?
I am currently making very small octopus to put with our baby bundles to hospitals (see my
production line opposite) using up some of the 2 and 3 ply wool that has been donated to me
down through the years.
Not being able to get on the road
for a while and being somewhat bored I have been
making these crazy
little fellows, not sure
what to do with them,
however I’ll find
someone out there
who will eventually
love them.
With the exception of my own items – my knitting cupboard
is empty, has anyone got anything for me?

FISHING & WEBSITE REPORT
No fishing report this month as I have not heard from anybody yet and I have not been able to go myself for various reasons, so I am contributing the attached article I discovered in the Loomis Newsletter that Lion Gwyneth sends to us on a regular basis. I think it is worth highlighting the contents so that our "sedentary" members who sit behind a steering wheel may get some benefit from it. Since moving into Tamworth I have been walking almost every morning and I feel
much better for the effort.

Walking does more than flush arteries and clear lungs 9 year study of benefits for people who walk 6 to 9 miles a week
The Loomis Lions Club has between 45 and 50 members at any given time and this span of numbers has been its member size since its founding in 1953. What in the world does walking and flushed arteries have to do with club size? Not much, really, except to note that the majority of club members have slipped into their ‘Golden Years’ and are not exactly running, walking or bike riding as part of their daily health regimen.
The lack of scheduled walking on a daily basis, according to this 9 year study, means a number of the members are allowing their brains to shrink in size thus risking the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. According to the study: Brains tend to shrink with age just like a piece of fruit on the counter. But the brain can be kept plump and young just by walking about a mile a day.
In a 9-year study, people who walked just 6 to 9 miles each week preserved significantly more grey matter as they aged, compared with their more sedentary peers. The study continued: What's so great about a big brain? It likely means more mental power. In the study, not only did the walkers have less brain shrinkage, but also that translated into a twofold reduction in their risk for cognitive impairment. What's more, the researchers also looked at the benefits of physical activity in people already suffering from cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease and found that a mere 5 miles a week of walking seemed to slow progression of the condition. So when it comes to brains, bigger really is better. Although the study didn't prove that physical activity was the direct cause of the brain benefits in the participants, similar studies have shown that aerobic exercise boosts both the production and the survival of new brain cells. And it's possible that physical activity may also trigger the birth of additional nutrient-
delivering blood vessels in the brain, all of which would translate into a bigger, better brain as the years go by.

Nepal Earthquake Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos, On ANZAC Day, Saturday 25th April 2015 Nepal experienced a 7.9 magnitude earthquake between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara. The devastation is immense, with 1,800 people killed and thousands more left homeless and without shelter. Your Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has acted immediately to give a US$100,000 Emergency Grant, for the Lions of Nepal and neighbouring countries to distribute bottled water, food, blankets, hygiene packs, baby care, toiletries, medicines and temporary shelter to the people in need. The Lions Family in Australia continue to help the Lions of Vanuatu in the rebuilding of their island communities, but we have the capacity and will to help other small nations in their times of extreme difficulties. It is poignant that 100 years ago at Gallipoli the 1st/6th Gurkha Rifles Nepalese soldiers were there with the Australian and New Zealander forces. LCIF doesn’t forget the needs of Australian communities where recent storms and flooding have caused so much damage in the Hunter Region. Your donation to the LCI/LCIF Disaster Relief Fund will enable much needed assistance to be given to the Nepalese people. Send your cheque in Australian Dollars to your District Cabinet Treasurer. Your donation marked as such is eligible to go towards a Melvin Jones Fellowship or Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship. ANZAC TRIBUTE A.J. Currie “Gandy” — Lion Marge Ollis
I never knew the following story until I started doing my family history and my father’s sister gave me my grandfather’s Bravery Medal. My cousins have the other medals. My father never talked about it and I have researched as much as I can, so far.
The grandfather I knew was a wheat and sheep farmer at Yenda near Griffith NSW. He was a fair but strict man. “Gandy” as I knew him. Stewart and I visited him as a newly married couple in May 1970. He passed away in July 1970, just before his 80th birthday.
On visits I never saw any sign of depression caused by the ravages of the Gallipoli campaign. I think his faith helped him through the memories and allowed him to have a very productive life. My father was one of 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. But then again as a child, I would not have sensed it.
My grandfather Albert James Currie, was a single farmer from Inverell NSW when he enlisted on 20 Aug 1914 aged 24yrs and 11 months
Departed on the Africa one of the first ships to leave NSW
Was in Alexandria March 1915 - Injured 14 April 1915
He landed on Gallipoli on 26th April, 1915 and was one of the lucky ones to survive the landing. He did not claim the medals which he had been awarded until a few years before he died..
Wounded in action 23 October 1917 (gunshot in both legs)
Ypres France. Shelled in trench and buried alive, saved by his fellow soldiers because one foot was moving out from under the rubble.

Returned to Australia 7th March 1918 on the “Corinthic discharged medically unfit 23 July 1918 – aged nearly 29 years. He married in 1922.

A snippet from WW 2
My father, Albert Mott went to enlist for active duty four times during WW2 and was
refused because he was classified as part of essential services, that being he was the only staff
member in the tyre service where he worked, who had a Boilers Certificate, able to operate the
tyre re-treading machinery. He told me many times that he had countless aeroplane tyres that
he re grooved. He later passed away in 1969 aged 60 with a “strained heart’ as a result from
lifting heavy truck tyres etc.

Me, Jeffrey Mott, being born in 1948 a baby
boomer, was subject to registering for National
Service. In those days all birthday marbles were
placed in a barrel and if your marble was pulled
out ,then you got called up for the mandatory two
year national service. Those who got called up
were guaranteed that their jobs were kept when
they returned from National Service. My marble
was not extracted from the barrel and hence I was
not called up. Today I have placed in a safe place
my “Registration Card” and “Indefinate
Deferrment” papers just in case.

My father, Courtney Ollis, one of a
family of 7 boys and 2 girls, also
registered for enlistment. His older
brothers all enlisted in WWII, one
sister worked in associated services
for the war effort.
My Dad was not accepted for service
because they found scaring on his
lungs from TB. So he did what he
could. He was an excellent farmer and
grew vegetables throughout WWII for
the Air Force.

TRIP TO NEWCASTLE CONVENTION WITH THE SOUTHERN
CONTINGENT OF THE VANNERS CLUB
Hazel and I joined the Southern Tour at Cowra on the 18th April 2015.
The Vanners tour had started at Kookachook (Koondrook), just over the Victorian Border at the
Dairy Farm owned by Alan Millar where I understand they visited several places of interest.
They then moved on to Wagga Wagga where they were well looked after by South Wagga
Lions. Trips included a visit to the local Army Training Centre where they had to be security
checked prior to entry.
Onward to Cowra where we met up with them all including our own Members of Janice and
Bernie Clifford. Trips were carried out to the Japanese Hologram and to The Japanese Gardens
followed by an interpretive trip to the site of the POW and Internment Camp. The first evening
we enjoyed a Happy Hour and fine session carried out by the tour leader Ken Haines and
supported by poetry readings from Ray Cook, the tour organiser. The second evening was
again a Happy Hour and fine session followed by a BBQ as the inclement weather had cleared
up long enough for us to fire up the Barbie. We were joined by some other Lions who happened
to be at the park.
With the rain showing no signs of easing
we journeyed on to Mudgee through
Blayney, Bathurst and Sofala having a
look at a few points of interest on the
way. The caravan park was awash
when we arrived and stayed that way for
three days we were domiciled there.
The camp kitchen was virtually open air
so we adjourned to the RSL for the next
three nights. The club kindly provided us
with a room for happy hour and eating
and was much appreciated by all. We
visited Gulgong and went to the Henry

Lawson Museum, the volunteers at the establishment were not too impressed when we
informed everyone present that Henry was born in Grenfell and we had a Festival for him on
the June Long weekend but they let us stay to look around. With the rain still pouring down
there was not a lot of other visiting and sightseeing done on the other days; however the coffee
shops did a roaring trade. Hazel and I managed to catch up with some old friends we had not
seen for a couple of years.
On the road again and this time to Denman and the rain had eased so it was a pleasant drive.
The sightseers had a good look around Merriwa before arriving at the Caravan Park. The park
was a pleasure with each site having its own on suite. We heard that Cessnock was flooded
and our illustrious leaders Ray and Ken went down there to survey the scene and the place we
were to stay at was knee deep in muck and mire. The owner of the Denman Park was a
Rotarian but we did not hold this against him. Actually he was a very friendly guy and when our
predicament was explained he re-arranged his bookings so that we could all stay on the same
site for an extra 3 nights.
Lion Ray had arranged a tour around the studs and the coal mines with a local guide in a coach
that lacked some suspension. We visited a large stud up in the Bylong Valley and were made
most welcome by the owners and received “The Royal Tour” which was very interesting. We
visited the Sheikh who owns the Emirates Airlines property at South Drayton and viewed many
horses all worth over a million dollars each. We were also informed of the problems that had
arisen between the colliries and the horse studs and the fact that BHP Billiton had bought out
many farms and properties for their mining development that would lose the horse industry from
NSW if allowed to go ahead.
On the Saturday we
attended the Combined
Church Service at the
Anglican Church prior to the
Anzac Day march. Several
Lions joined in the march
alongside Denman Lions.
Lion Bernie really enjoyed
the day but the rest of us
behaved. We enjoyed a
Chinese Meal in the RSL
Club in the evening. On
Sunday we visited some of
the cheese factories, olive
plantations and other
boutique operations in the
area.
Tuesday and we were off to Stockton Beach at New castle to set up camp for the convention.
Our caravan site was about a kilometre from the ferry and there were free town buses the other
side to take us to the Convention.
All together we had a great time with the tour and looking forward to our visit next year to
Echuca and catching up with many new found friends.

BOGGABRI DROVERS CAMPFIRE 2015

Whilst the MD Lions Vanners Club members
were travelling south from Stanthorpe in southern Queensland and the southern members
gathered at Koondrook on the NSW/ VIC border near Barham travelling north, L/L Lynne & I left
the comfort of our home at downtown Bowraville for another Aussie adventure, Monday 20th
April travelling through to spend the night in Tamworth. The trip so far was patchy rain not too
bad though. I know what went wrong, I washed and polished the car the week before.
Upon arriving in Boggabri very next day around
lunch time the heavens opened up and there we
were pitching our camp in the pouring rain. It had
rained nearly all night, Lions Geoff Eather and Ron
Boxsell were tearing their hair out trying to find dry
camping areas for those that turned up early and
there were quite a few who had done this. Hence
some of these people tried to find their own
camping sites because as they said we have a
4WD and consequently got bogged despite being
told to wait and that is where they stayed, others were towed out with tractors that were on site.
It was interesting to see the old tractors put to work and what a magnificent job they did. Me
with my 2WD FORD having been there and done that back at my very first Cabinet meeting in
2006 knew better and stayed put. Lynne & I were soon shown to a camp site on solid ground
with 3 inches of water flowing through it. The northern contingent consisting of Tom & Bev
Cattell, Stewart & Gwyneth Payne, George & Josie Priddle were to arrive today but were
informed to stay put at Narrabri. Stewart & Marge Ollis travelled via the Hunter Valley arriving
upon dark time as they had had some difficulty negotiating flood waters (temporary road
closures) and car trouble, they were unable to go to their allotted site so parked on the road in
front of our van. What a lot of determination shown by Lions during this trying exercise.
It was extremely a sight for sore eyes as people moved about wearing multi coloured gumboots,
all the colours of the rainbow. We could have had a Gumboot fashion parade.
This contingent of Lions at Boggabri Drovers Campfire had offered their services to help
Boggabri Lions Club in the running of this magnificent event which was celebrating it`s 10th
Birthday this year.
Wednesday was a lot better day with only some patchy rain but we were in there amongst the
mud, the site booking office was opened and we soon went to work on helping people book in
and this continued until Saturday
afternoon when we called it quits. We
collected money at the gate on Saturday
for day visitors. Lions Stewart Payne &
Tom Cattell paid us a visit on Wednesday
arvo to have a look at the sites and
declared that if no more rain was to fall
they would be here on Thursday morning
and such did take place. Stewart &
Gwyneth were soon in the booking in
office, Tom Cattell was delivering water,
L/L`s selling raffle tickets and the rest of
us working on the gate in shifts. Lion
Dave Clarke & L/L Ann arrived on Wednesday, set up camp and were soon put to work. In the
meantime the southern contingent who were to meet up with the northern contingent at
Cessnock early in the next week for a couple of days rest and recreation together were
informed that the Cessnock Showgrounds was closed due to the floods and torrential rain so
were informed to stay put in Denman and keep their feet dry only moving out on Tuesday for the
trip to Stockton Beach. The northern contingent stayed put
at Boggabri.
On Wednesday as the weather conditions improved we
were inundated with campers who had left their decision to
come to the Drovers Campfire until today and we were
kept very
busy
with the
inflow at the booking in office.
Thursday was much the same but with with
increased momentum as more and more
campers rolled in. Tours began again as things
dried out, many stalls began opening up,
evening meals were on again, entertainment got
going and we were away, after dining on tea/coffee, scones cooked on site along with jam and
fresh cream. yum
It was good to wake up to sunshine on Friday but soon the clouds appeared but no rain as
things got into full swing.
ANZAC DAY: Saturday
25th April. Many
campers attended the
Dawn Service held at
BAAN BAA and a large
contingent gathered at
the cenotaph in
Boggabri where a
fitting service took
place. Campers were
still rolling in on the afternoon.
On Sunday there were many attractions and tours that took place
even Church was conducted on site.
Monday morning we were all put to work helping
pull down fences, picking up site numbers,
dismantling the stage and various other jobs that
needed to be done. Lion Tom Cattell from the
MD Vanners club every night conducted “Happy
Hour” and I must thank him for his efforts in
keeping the dream alive.
Tuesday morning we said our good byes to all
who we worked alongside of as we were
heading off to Stockton Beach to attend the
63rd MD Convention in Newcastle.
I take this opportunity to thank one & all for a
chance to enjoy the fellowship of this great
worldwide service organisation known as, “LIONS INTERNATIONAL”

It’s surprising how often one of those is the first drawn number in NSW Monday night Lotto. In fact of the 18 draws this year 7 have been unsold numbers. Should any member wish to know more about our Club Lotto please send me an email? Good Luck

No not much to report from our travels. We have been to Boonah (130 km inland from the Gold Coast) to farm sit a couple of weekends lately. Nice to get out into the country and look after a few animals for a few days. No TV or Internet. It’s very relaxing and they have a beautiful home in a great position with 360 degrees country views. It’s a good retreat for us. Our next big trip is a 49 night cruise from Perth to Singapore then to Cape Town and back to Perth with lots of interesting places in between. We have to wait until January for that.
