From the Desk of Fr. Beckman:The New Testament offers little on the sign-value of
the empty tomb of Jesus. So just what does it express
and symbolize? I ask you to consider three points:
First of all, the emptiness of Jesus’ grave reflects the
holiness that it once held, the corpse of the incarnate Son of God
who lived totally for others and died to bring a new covenant of
love for all people. This ‘Holy One’ could not ‘see corruption’
(Acts 2:27). Second, tombs naturally express the finality and ir-
revocable loss of death. Jesus’ open and empty grave readily sug-
gests and symbolizes the fullness of new and everlasting life
into which he has risen. Here emptiness paradoxically bespeaks
fullness. Third, the empty tomb expresses something vital about
the nature of redemption: namely, that redemption is much more
than a mere escape from our scene of suffering and death. Rather
it means the transformation of this material, bodily world with
its whole history of sin and suffering. The first Easter began the
work of finally bringing our universe home to its ultimate destiny.
God did not discard Jesus’ earthly corpse but mysteriously raised
and transfigured it, so as to reveal what lies ahead for human be-
ings and their world. In short, that empty tomb in Jerusalem is
God’s radical sign that redemption is not an escape to a better
world but a wonderful transformation of this world. Seen that
way, the open and empty grave of Jesus is highly significant for
anyone who appreciates what redemption means.
HAPPY EASTER!
Fr. David Beckman
Yard Maintenance Work Day
St. Patrick’s, WinthropOn April 14 from 8:00 AM - ??
We will be doing several projects around the church and hall
grounds, so please bring wheel barrels, shovels, work gloves and
rakes. A lunch will be provided! We do need a head count for
lunch, so please RSVP to 319-334-7191(Cluster office) or 319-
935-3905 (George Aberle). Thank you in advance for your partici-
pation!!!!
Easter SundayThe first light of Easter dawn had begun to creep over the
horizon. The steadfast women from Friday's gory events are return-
ing again to the body of their Lord. "Who will roll back the stone
for us from the entrance to the tomb?" How quickly we return to
mundane concerns and how thoroughly God wants to surprise us!
Imagine the utter shock upon seeing the stone rolled away, the
tomb empty, and a stranger clothed in light proclaiming the impos-
sible. "You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been
raised; he is not here." He is risen indeed and the world will never
be the same.
We know from other Gospel passages that Mary Magda-
lene made haste to the disciples to proclaim the Good News. We
know that Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see for themselves.
We know that the wonder and awe of the Resurrection permeated
the lives of the apostles until their own dying day.
Can we comprehend the utterly world-changing nature of
this surprise? The historical reanimation of a dead man is of no real
value to us. But we know that Easter Sunday is so much more. By
the Resurrection of Jesus, life has triumphed over death for us all.
The gates of heaven are opened and the treasury of graces is
poured out upon the here and now. This Resurrection Day, let us
draw near, amazed yet unafraid, to the risen Christ. Let us recall
the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, "Jesus is not a charac-
ter from the past. He lives, and he walks before us as one who is
alive, he calls us to follow him, the living one, and in this way to
discover for ourselves the path of life" (Easter Vigil, April 15,
2006).
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court
#495, St. John Church, Independence and
St. Patrick’s, Winthrop will meet Thursday, April 5, at 12:30
p.m. for lunch at Prairie Hills Assisted Living, 505 Enterprise
Drive, Independence. Becky Van Dale will present the program on
making rosaries. The lunch charge will be $6 and members should
call Cheryl Reed at 334-4983 for reservations.
