Early Diagnosis Implies Early Intervention
INVITATION TO ATTEND
We plan an outstanding meeting:
It celebrates the 20th anniversary of the EACD meetings, confirming thelong tradition of the society, which is based on the high quality of the topicspresented throughout these years. The topics are interesting and attractivefor an increasing number of interdisciplinary participants, such as doctorsand therapists involved in the diagnostics and treatment of children at riskof or with disability.
This is the first meeting in a non Western European country, and will promotethe EACD in the Eastern European countries. Moreover it aims to make acontribution to bridging the differences in paediatric rehabilitation betweenEastern and Western Europe. Therefore, the topics and programme of themeeting will combine new attitudes and advances in paediatric rehabilitationand already established therapeutic methods and tools to document andevaluate disability in childhood, still lacking in East European countries.
This will be a joint meeting of the EACD and EPNS (European PaediatricNeurology Society). The opportunity to benefit from the expertise of bothsocieties certainly will result in high level scientific contributions.
The programme of the meeting will address the theme of “Early DiagnosisImplies Early Intervention” which we believe has the potential to ensurebetter functional recovery. Early implementation of appropriate therapeuticprocedures probably will not prevent disability, but may be able to promotea functional outcome. This is particularly true for perinatal brain damageand its sequels which will be presented in many ways: basic neuroscience, neuroprotection and evaluation of plasticity up to the broad spectrum oftherapeutic modalities.
All the topics of the programme will be presented by key note lectures, parallel sessions, lectures, dedicated papers and posters as well as workshopsand instructional courses.
Satellite symposia arranged by EACD/ EPNS will precede the officialprogramme of the meeting. Also, Parent Associations will contribute to thepre-meeting events enriching the programme by their satellite symposia.
We look forward to welcoming you to Zagreb and Croatia in 2008!
On behalf of the Organizing CommitteeVlatka Mejaπki-Boπnjak

INVITATION TO ATTEND
2008 is the 20th anniversary of the European Academy of Childhood Disabilityand we shall be celebrating by visiting Zagreb the capital of Croatia. It isexciting that our meeting to celebrate this anniversary is being held in Zagreb.
For many years the late Dr Ronnie Mac Keith organised International meetingson a yearly basis in the UK with funding from the UK Spastics Society (nowSCOPE) and with the same support Brian Neville and other colleaguesproposed the formation of the European Academy of Childhood Disability. Mac Keith had been worried that formalising informal arrangements mightmean that the group lost its very personal, friendly and informal nature. This informality coupled with the scientific excellent of the programmes, the organising committee were keen to continue. I hope we can 20 yearslater say we have achieved this. Meetings have been held in most countriesin the European Union. On each occasion when we visit a country we haven’tbeen to before, as for example in Spain in 2006, the Academy attracts toit a new group of clinicians and scientists who we have recognise that theyacquire not only a scientific forum where they can receive and exchangeinformation about childhood disability but also a place where they can formnew and valued professional friendships.
In welcoming you to our meeting in Zagreb in 2008 the EACD is excitingthat it is going to be a meeting outside Western Europe and the EuropeanUnion and we look forward to forming a new group of friends and colleaguesin Croatia. Already the programme looks very exciting. The title of themeeting is “Early Diagnosis Implies Early Intervention” and we all hope thatearly intervention will lead to improvement. Families are often beguiledinto believing that we will find a cure and their child will normalise. Notsomething sadly that often happens but we can see that their life starts aswell as possible and that they have an early effective management programmein place. This is not something that we often achieve but we will be able toafter Zagreb.
So I join with Vlatka in inviting you to join us in this beautiful city and I lookforward to expanding my knowledge of disability and the environment inwhich our patients live. I am sure we shall find we have a lot to learn inCroatia.
Martin BaxChair, European Academy of Childhood Disability
