Post-Graduate Opportunity: Teach in China for 10 months! Appalachians Abroad Teach in China program prepares and places around 50-60 participants each year to teach English in China. Participants in this program can spend an academic year (10 month contract) in China. They will teach approximately 16 to 20 hours per week and in exchange be provided free housing on campus, medical care, monthly salary range from $1,000 USD up to $2,400 USD, travel stipend for touring China, and a round-trip international airline ticket upon completion of teaching contract. You just arrived for a job interview. As you wait in the reception area your mind is racing. But instead of running through your rehearsed responses to possible questions again, use that time to survey the workplace. In fact, you should be keenly observant from the time you arrive until you say your goodbyes. Why? Paying close attention to the workplace and people will allow you to get a better sense of the company culture, and in turn, can help you determine whether it’s a good fit for you. Interviewers can tell you what they want about the environment and personnel—but your own first-hand observations will be far more useful.
“The interview process is a two-way street,” says Amy Hoover, president of Talent Zoo, a site for marketing, advertising, and digital professionals. “Not only are you being evaluated, but you should be evaluating the company and its people. It’s absolutely your duty as an interviewee to observe the culture of the company and its employees. If you’re not offered a tour, be sure to request one so you can get a sense of the environment and its vibe. If possible, you should also request to meet some potential co-workers. It’s as much your responsibility as the candidate to determine if you’re a good fit for the company as it is your interviewer’s, so don’t be shy.” Dr. Katharine Brooks, director of Liberal Arts Career Services at The University of Texas at Austin and author of You Majored in What? Mapping Your Path from Chaos to Career, agrees. She says it’s hard to relax and remember to observe when you’re stressed about an interview, “but make a plan to stop for a minute and assess the office or setting,” she says. “Just take thirty seconds to look around and see how formal the setting is. Do people have personal items on their desks? Is there informal and casual conversation in the hallways? Is the feeling relaxed or tense? Does everyone seem like they are on an urgent mission? These are easily made observations despite personal nervousness.” So, while you’ll still want to use the interview as your chance to make a great impression and ask important questions, you should also think of it as an opportunity to evaluate the role, the prevailing culture, the company’s leadership, the growth path, and the boss, says Meredith Haberfeld, an executive coach and co-founder of the Institute for Coaching. Here are 11 things to look out for while you’re on a job interview:
1) How do employees interact with each other? 2) Are the people happy and welcoming? 3) How do employees answer the phone? 4) What does their body language say? 5) Is it a fast-paced work environment? 6) Is it an organized place? 7) What is the physical office environment like? 8) How do employees dress? 9) What is the physical layout of the office? 10) How do managers interact with employees? 11) Is everyone busy?

Why You Should Go Out of Your Way to Find an Awesome Peer Mentor

Imagine…You just had an invaluable meeting with one of your mentors. You feel really stuck at work, unsure whether to take that great promotion or follow your passion with the startup that asked you to join their team. Your mentor went through a similar dilemma, and their advice was fresh and honest.
Now, what if we told you that your mentor was not a senior leader in your field, a professor or your boss? Rather, your mentor was your peer—someone at the same level as you in their career. But, you ask, how can a peer be a mentor, and why would I even want a peer mentor?
Here are four reasons why you should have a peer mentor and some key steps to building a peer mentoring relationship that will last a lifetime:
1. They’re at the same stage of life you are
The advantage of peers is that only they understand what it means to be a Twitter-obsessed Millennial in a recession economy in ways that senior mentors cannot.
2. They’re fluent in the new way of working
We live in an age of rapidly evolving technology and social media, which has impacted the way we work and live. Your peers are more likely to be excited about embracing these new technologies and work habits, whereas you might have to convince older generations of their value.
3. They’re safe sounding boards
Voicing your ideas, doubts and insecurities to someone who is at the top of their field is valuable, but it’s also incredibly intimidating.
4. Your peers will be the leaders of tomorrow
Mentorship is ultimately about collaboration, sharing ideas, asking for feedback and not being afraid to ask for help or advice. Whether you are mentored by your peer or the CEO of your company, don’t forget to be open, honest and giving in return.
