iConcerts is Europe’s first 24-hour, high-def music channel.

iConcerts provides a unique focus on concerts and live music performances. Its library covers some of the highest-profile festivals and live events (as well as TV shows, including the BBC’s Later With Jools Holland) and has over 1,000 performances in many popular genres – rock and pop, through hip hop and R&B, to jazz and world music. It is the largest digital concert library of its kind in the world.

The channel is aimed at live music lovers from 25-55 and the concert recordings library is particularly strong in classic rock acts (with the likes of Santana, Deep Purple, Yes, Queen, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top), and alternative pop (Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Muse, Amy Winehouse, Black Eyed Peas, Franz Ferdinand) but the whole spectrum of music is covered, James Brown to James Blunt, Jamie Cullum to Jamiroquai.

This discerning audience also wants high-quality images and 80 per cent of programmes are originated in full HD. iConcerts is an HD-only channel – there is no standard-definition version.

The channels runs 24/7 and concerts

from various years or locations are grouped thematically, to create special events and recurring programming segments such as Legends of Rock, iConcerts Africa and After Midnight. Artist interviews and behind-the-scenes documentaries complement the individual concerts.

The iConcerts channel was designed to use the latest technologies to deliver distribution across all digital platforms. While the linear HD channel provides stunning music TV, it also operates as a window for music fans to the VoD concerts offered online, via an over-the-top service on some networks, and on Android and Apple mobile devices, where complete concerts and performances can be bought pay-per-view or by subscription.

While the iConcerts content may stretch back to the start of rock’n’roll, the delivery of the music is bang up to date.

16°EDating back to the 1980s as Eutelsat’s second orbital position, 16°E is still a key slot for the operator, serving Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean Basin and the Middle East, Africa. There are seven pay-TV platforms and almost 400 TV channels broadcasting from 16°E.

All three satellites now at this position are recent arrivals. W2M was intended to go to 16°E when it was launched in 2008 but a power problem kept it from this position until 2010. At the same time, Sesat 1 (Siberian, European Satellite), which was originally at 36°E was also moved to 16°E. Eurobird 16 has one of the most confusing careers of any craft in orbit. It was launched to 13°E as Hot Bird 4, in 2005 moved to 7°W and renamed Atlantic Bird 4 (but also known as Nilesat 103) and in 2009 moved to 16°E as Eurobird 16.

The Hot Bird TV Awards shine a spotlight on the thematic channels that enrich and diversify the broadcasting experience for many millions of viewers.

Hundreds of channels from around the world enter this annual competition, judged by an independent panel of media experts and recognised at a gala ceremony in Venice.

Eutelsat, Europe’s leading satellite operator, created this event in 1998. It is now a joint initiative between Eutelsat, Eurovisioni and SAT Expo Europe, as a prestigious recognition for channels broadcasting via its fleet.

The Hot Bird satellites form Eutelsat’s premium broadcasting position, receivable across Europe from 13°E.

In 2011, 150 channels from 18 different countries entered the 10 categories: children’s, cinema, culture and education, documentaries, fiction and general entertainment, lifestyle, music, national window, news and sports.

Viewers can vote online at www.hotbirdtvawards.com for the People’s Choice Award 2011.
