SPOTLIGHT ON JAZZ

George ColliganGeorge Colligan is not only one of the great jazz pianists of his generation, but has earned an international reputation as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, accompanist, teacher and bandleader.

Winner of the 2015 DownBeat magazine Critics Poll, he has had a long association with living jazz legend Jack DeJohnette. With over 130 albums to date as an accompanist, Colligan has worked with a long list of jazz greats, including Buster Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and many others.

Kitty LaRoar“When Kitty sings, music stops to listen.”

Stylish London singer Kitty LaRoar makes her debut performance at Bennigan’s Jazz Club singing, scatting and freestyling at the drums. The band will be showcasing original compositions from the album ‘Valentine’s Eve’, as well as original lyrics to the music of Monk, Ellington, Strayhorn and Sonny Rollins. Originally inspired by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Kitty LaRoar’s unique talents are not just as silky voiced songstress, scat-singer and drummer.

She has a spellbinding ability to freestyle lyrics to melody on the spot, telling stories that are not only relevant to the song she is singing, but often weaving in references to life, love, nature, politics, current events, and even to people in the audience. The band performs highly original songs by Kitty and her pianist Nick Shankland and although the genre is clearly jazz, this unpredictable and eclectic music entrances and engages the audience.

EDUCATION PROGRAMME

For the third year running, over 1500 children across Derry and Strabane will be introduced to jazz through Live Music Now’s schools programme in the run-up to the festival. Between March and May, pupils at over 12 primary schools will receive jazz taster performances, delivered by some of Northern Ireland’s fi nest young musicians, including bassist Jack Kelly and guitarist Joseph Leighton. The short performances will be interactive and fun, including familiar jazz standards, and will be a perfect introduction to jazz for little ones, as well as showcasing our local young talent as aspirational role models.

Since 2017 the programme has reached over 5000 children, with an enthusiastic response from pupils and teachers alike.

“The opportunity for our pupils to experience a less familiar genre of music was invaluable to us. Pupils are familiar with genres such as pop, country, classical but jazz is something they have little experience of.” Newbuildings PS, 2018

Live Music Now is the leading outreach and musicians’ development charity, which places outstanding young musicians in a range of community and healthcaresettings. For more information or for your school to register interest please email [email protected] interest please email [email protected].

2018 saw the passing of one of the great stalwarts of the Jazz Festival, the inimitable Jack Molloy (1939- 2018). The founding member of the Derry Jazz Quartet, a driving, swinging drummer who was equally renowned as a singer and raconteur. The City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival has truly lost one of its legends. In tribute to Jack, his former colleagues will be performing this year as ‘The Derry Jazz Quartet’ at some of the venues in which he loved to perform. This will culminate in a special afternoon on Monday 6th May hosted by his friends at the City Hotel, where Jack spent many happy Festival Bank Holiday afternoons playing the music he loved. It will feature many of the musicians with whom he has performed - a fitting musical celebration of the life of the great Jack Molloy.

It promises to be fun for all the family with interactive workshops for kids of all ages throughout both days such as junk art, storytelling, an urban nature walk, singing and much more.

There will be Fairtrade hot drinks, vegan cupcakes and street food, all enjoyed while being entertained by local musicians and street performers. Enough Stuff is free and open to all ages. A special welcome in 2019 to cyclists. We are encouraging people to make/bring recycled instruments as well as our own collection. To engage the public, we have an open stage/trash orchestra.
