Start your visit on Historic Medina Square — the heart of our “Best Hometown”Founded in 1818 as the

county seat, Medina was designed as a New

England-style town around a central greenspace.

Construction of its original brick courthouse began

in 1820 and the building still stands at the SW corner of Court and Liberty Streets.

Medina grew slowly as an agricultural community

and as the legal hub of county business. As early

as 1835, it was incorporated as the Village of Medina.

The larger Historic Courthouse on the SE corner

of Liberty and Broadway was dedicated in 1841.

It survived the great fires of 1848 and 1870, the latter

of which virtually destroyed the entire Square. The

District was rebuilt with brick in the late 1800s, and endures as an outstanding

example of late Victorian commercial architecture.

In 1869, Amos Ives Root was inspired by a swarm of

bees on his store window to launch a new business which was to become the

beekeeping, honey, and candle business that made

Medina a center of the industry and gave us today’s 150-year old Root Candles.

By 1950, Medina had grown to more than

5,000 people and became a chartered city in 1952. In

1970, the population had doubled and the community

responded with paved roads, the acquisition of

extensive parklands, city service improvements, and

new schools.

In 1967, a group of concerned residents formed

the Community Design Committee and worked with property owners to restore the Square to its pre-WWII

appearance. Building by building, modern updates

were removed and historic facades revealed or rebuilt.

Within eight years, the Square was largely restored

to its historic beauty – all with private funding.

The district was placed on the National Register of

Historic Places in 1975.

Medina continues to be dedicated to preserving its history. The South Town District, a former industrial hub south of the Historic Square, has been added to the already vibrant downtown shopping and dining district. Located in South Town and once the agriculture hub of Medina County, the Farmers Exchange has found new life as a mixed-use destination that includes a restaurant, coffee shop, butcher shop, farmer’s market space, brewery, and two floors of apartments.

Then check out all that’s new!The former Henry Furnace industrial building, constructed in 1910 near Root Candles, is now The Foundry, one of Medina’s major entertainment attractions. This renovation includes High Voltage Karting with both indoor and outdoor tracks, and Foundry Social – an area of arcade and video games, a 150-seat conference center, dining, and the MAD Brewing Company.

With private dollars and a Capital Grant, the Town Hall and Engine House Museum has had many upgrades, and the second floor has been renovated into a public community room overlooking the Square.
