South Glens Falls High School Teen Excellence honoree Marlies Amberger is described as ambitious, intelligent, personable, well-rounded and respected by peers and teachers alike.

Marlies is ranked third in her class with a GPA of 97.38 and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors with Mastery in Mathematics and Science.

She serves on the Principal’s Advisory Committee and is a delegate for Student Government. She was elected as a student representative on the Board of Education.

Marlies is active with Key Club, having served as vice president and president before becoming lieutenant governor for 10 school districts. She is the treasurer of National Honor Society, secretary of Spanish Honor Society and a member of the Varsity Rapid Recall Team, Math League and Drama Club. She presented at Big Buddies at Ballard Elementary School.

Marlies is president and soloist of Vocal Point and helps plan and host TuneUp. She has attended All County Choir Festival and is a 2nd soprano vocalist in Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Melodies of Christmas. She rings bells for the Salvation Army, helps at the Taste of the North Country, makes gi� s for Operation Christmas Child and raises money for the annual South Glens Falls Marathon Dance.

Marlies is doing an internship at a local animal hospital, makes cards for veterans and ill children, donates May baskets to group homes and supervises children for Parents’ Night Out. She was awarded the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass University of Rochester Scholarship.

Personal Inspiration: I have always had a passion to tell stories and to be adventurous.

Hobbies: I love to travel to new places and go to the beach, especially on Long Island. I enjoy writing and spending time with my family, friends, and my dog.

Biggest Accomplishment: Receiving the � rst place award in a national Scholastic Essay contest and travelling to Los Angeles as a result. � e experience made me realize how much I love to write.

School Activities: President of a cappella group Vocal Point, Secretary of Spanish Honor Society, Treasurer of National Honor Society, and participate in the South High Marathon Dance every year. Lieutenant Governor of Division 15 of New York District Key Club. I also serve on the South Glens Falls Board of Education as a student representative.

Community Service: I love to volunteer through NHS, SHH, and Key Club. I’ve volunteered at Double H Ranch and the Salvation Army with NHS and SHH, and I’ve volunteered with Key Club at Taste of the North Country, Festival of Trees, planning Parent’s Night Out, hosting monthly divisionals, planning and hosting Fall Rally, serving on the New York District Key Club Board, and planning the Leadership Training Conference.

Person you look up to and why: My mother and grandmother have been my role models since I can remember. As strong willed, compassionate women, they have shown me that I can do anything I set my mind to.

Name a teacher who has positively impacted your life inside and outside the classroom and how: My AP United States History teacher Mrs. Gutheil taught me the value of grit and hardwork, and reminds me to live in the moment. I’ve been fortunate to have so many other great teachers in school, including my AP Biology teacher Ms. Palumbo, my English 10 teacher Ms. Leavens, and my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Sampson.

Activities outside of school: I sang soprano II as a member of the Empire State Youth Chorale’s Melodies of Christmas hosted by CBS 6 News. I’ve also traveled to Los Angeles with Vocal Point and to Texas with Key Club in the past year, and I volunteer when I can.

Favorite pastime: I love to hike with my dog, sample new eateries with my friends, and write to relax.

“She performs like a well-oiled machine and is always there to be a team player,” said nominator Dawn Vice.

Maggie has been captain of the Cross Country Team, receiving awards for her sportsmanship, and is a member of the Track Team, Nordic Ski Team and Varsity Sports Captain’s Club.

She is a peer leader and a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. She was the only student from her class to be nominated for the RPI Medal Scholarship.

She plays the cello in the Chamber Orchestra and volunteers in the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra’s Side-By-Side Program. Maggie is also a camp counselor working with children on the autism spectrum and with life-threatening illnesses at Camp Under the Woods and Double H- Hole in the Woods.

Nominator and Cross Country Running Coach Kevin Sullivan said Maggie was chosen as a freshman to join the Crisis Response Team and has been a member ever since. He believes her social skills have helped her be a visible leader among her peers.

“Maggie, without question, is an exemplary role model, possessive of an unwavering moral compass. � is charismatic, loyal, inspiring and caring young person has openly given of herself to so many at school and in the community,” he said.

Maggie hopes to study medicine in college and specialize in neurological conditions.

Person you look up to and why: I look up to my mom because she has inspired me to be the best person, student, athlete, and musician that I can be. My mom has never missed one of my races or concerts over the years and her cheering for me at the top of the largest hill in the middle of the cross country course or smiling at me from the audience when I am about to perform is something I cherish. She has also taught me how important and rewarding it can be to serve others. I have loved watching her volunteer in the community and I strive to serve others to the best of my ability by following her example. I will be forever grateful to her for all that she has done for me.

Name a teacher who has positively impacted your life inside and outside the classroom and how: Gregory Verheyn, my orchestra teacher, has impacted my life inside and outside the classroom for the past 8 years. He helped me discover my passion for music and he taught me just how powerful of a language music can be. I believe it is one of the few languages that everyone in the world can understand and I am thankful for him teaching me this lesson.

Queensbury High School Senior Cole Carpenter is not only involved in everything from musicals to sports, but goes out of his way to be kind to others, even when he might not think anyone is watching.

“I once observed Cole, on an hour-long bus ride, intuitively sit down next to a student who

o� en struggles to � nd friends. Cole has this way of showing compassion without it ever feeling like sympathy,” said his nominator, Kerry Bundy.

It’s not surprising then that Cole is president of Best Buddies and spends several weeks each summer at a National Best Buddies retreat to hone his leadership skills. He teaches modi� ed skiing at Double H Ranch and is involved with with QMS Cares Tutoring Program, Glens Falls Junior Hospital Volunteers and National Honor Society service projects.

On the � eld, Cole has been the team captain for the Cross Country Team, co-captain on the Varsity Cross Country Team and a starting goalie of the Lacrosse Team.

He is a Madrigals singer and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor by Proctor’s High School Musical � eater Awards last spring for his part in the school musical. He serves on the school’s literary magazine sta� and has been a class o� cer for all four years of high school. He is also involved with the Sister Cities Exchange Program with Saga City, Japan.

Cole is participating in the SUNY Adirondack Internship Program and shadows doctors in the Neurology Department at Glens Falls Hospital.

Patrick Dee hopes to attend the US Naval Academy to study aeronautical engineering, become a pilot and � y � ghter jets and work as an astronaut for NASA.

� e Lake George Senior, who transferred from Queensbury four years ago, has shown

tremendous leadership through the following activities: Boys State American Legion Program, US Naval Academy Summer Seminar and several positions in the Boy Scouts of America, including Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow and Senior Patrol Leader.

In the community, Patrick rings bells for the Salvation Army, works the grounds at the Double H Ranch, assists with Special Olympics and participates in community dinners, the rehabilitation and labeling of cross country trails and the rehabilitation of monuments for the Boy Scouts.

Patrick takes AP and college classes and is enrolled in the New Visions Engineering Program through BOCES. At Queensbury, he took accelerated courses in math, Spanish, science and robotics. He was vice president of the REX Robotics Team that participated in the New York State competition and Patrick’s nominator, Rosemarie Earl, said the group’s success is “signi� cantly a� ected by his participation, enthusiasm and encouragement.”

Glens Falls High School Senior Rachael Duell’s � rst job was making lunches for children around East Field. Today, she continues this quest to help her community.

Her nominator, Stephanie Ruel, said Rachael has overcome many challenges, including the death of her father when she was in 3rd grade and then, two years ago, the death of her grandmother, with whom she was living. When Rachael was in 8th grade, she spent a month and a half at the Captain’s Youth Shelter in Ballston Spa. Ruel said those events shaped who she is.

Person you look up to and why: � e one person I look up to is my mother. She has raised my sister and me as a single mom, and has never missed a special event in either of our lives. She works full time as a Registered Nurse, and always manages to accomplish everything. Last year she went back to college full time and received her bachelor’s degree, while still working full time at the hospital. She received all A’s and graduated with honors. I was so proud of her. My mom has taught me what determination is, and how important it is to work hard at everything you do in your life. She never quits, and always has a positive attitude. I am so fortunate to be raised by such a strong woman.

Name a teacher who has positively impacted your life inside and outside the classroom and how: Mrs. Christina Wilson has inspired me on so many levels, and has signi� cantly impacted my life while I have been a student at Whitehall High School. I appreciate the trusting relationship she provided me, and will certainly miss her support a great deal.

Activities outside of school: I am a large part of my Catholic church as I have volunteered with our youth group, been an alter server in mass, and am now a lector. I also have ridden horses for my entire life, competing in both dressage and eventing, and instructing others. I have worked as a cashier at Hicks Orchard, as a receptionist at the Slate Valley Museum and as a babysitter for local families.

Queensbury School Counselor Trisha Dunn describes Julia Mannix as someone who is always looking for ways to help others in her school and community.

She is enrolled in the New Visions Health Careers program through BOCES. She conducted a research project and presentation on a current ethical issue in medicine and chose to tackle Life

She was the recipient of a grant for this research through the Marjot Foundation.

Brendan is one of a set of triplets receiving a Teen Excellence Award this year. � at, however, is not only what sets Brendan and brothers apart from the other award winners. In � � h grade, the three boys moved with their parents to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, for six months, hiking

along the border with Nepal and absorbing the Asian culture.

In school, Brendan has been captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, co-captain of the Varsity Cross Country Team and Rookie Player of the Year for the Foothills Rangers Rugby Team. He participated in the New York State Nordic Ski Team for Eastern High Schools and was chosen for the USA Rugby All-American Winter Camp in December. He is a member of the Jazz Band, Men’s A Cappella, JCS Pop Singers, Spanish Club, Senior National Honor Society and the Mathletes.

Brendan stocks shelves for the food pantry and organized clothing at the North Creek Outreach Center, served meals at a homeless shelter in Arbor Hill and raises funds for Adirondack TREKS to “empower youth through adventure.” He helps the soccer program through the Johnsburg Youth Commission and buys Christmas gi� s for needy families through Operation Santa Claus. In school, Seamus is president of his class and a member of the Senior National Honor Society, and was chosen to attend both the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference and American Legion Boys State. He attended the STEM program and US Naval Academy Summer Seminar at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. He also was nominated by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and has received a Letter of Assurance to attend the US Naval Academy.

Seamus is captain of the Nordic Ski Team and represented Section 2 at the State Championships and New York State at the Eastern High School Nordic Skiing Championships. He was part of the Mid Atlantic Junior National Cross Country Ski Team and competed in the USSA Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships.
