Principal’s Report
Recognition of Excellence Ceremony Well done to our students that were recognised for their excellent 2018 HSC results at the Recognition of Excellence Ceremony held on Friday 8 February 2019.
Year 7 Welcome BBQ & SRC Mini-Fete Our P&C and SRC hosted a Welcome BBQ and Mini-fete on Thursday 14 February 2019. Unfortunately I was unable to attend as I had a Regional Department of Education commitment in Tamworth. By all accounts it was a great success. Well done to all involved!
School Swimming Carnival The school Swimming Carnival took place on Wednesday 20 February at the Glen Innes Swim Centre. The ‘vibe’ and atmosphere blew me away. All parents and community members that I spoke to were impressed with the carnival-like atmosphere and the involvement of our students. The senior students were outstanding and should be praised for their leadership on the day. All students should be congratulated on their behaviour and participation. I believe that it is by far the best swimming carnival I have ever attended.
Many thanks must go to the Glen Innes High School staff, especially Ms Katie Rossington for all her organisation. Thank you to the local swimming club for the use of their equipment and clubhouse and the Glen Innes Severn Council staff who run and look after the magnificent facilities. Many thanks also to all our parents/carers and extended family members who came to enjoy the carnival.
Year 7 Laptops Glen Innes High School aims to improve student learning experiences both in and out of the
classroom. The school has provided our Year 7 students with a personal laptop on the expectation that they will make good decisions with regard to their personal use of technology.
All Year 7 students and their parent/carer must sign the ‘Laptop User Charter’ and pay a $50.00 deposit before the laptop will be allowed to be taken home. Failure to comply with the ‘Laptop User Charter’ could result in the recall of the laptop and/or loss of access for home use.
Year 12 Academic Rigour 2019 begins the very important Higher School Certificate year for our Year 12 students. They should begin this year with the correct attitude and motivation. The following points will provide a great start for them: Attending all classes on time every time - do not
miss class, and if you do, ensure that you have caught up on the work.
Have a Home Student Program - schedule study each night for selected subjects. This is not homework or assessment task completion, this is practising skills and embedding information that is examinable in the HSC directly into your brain.
Your priority is study. Balance social, sporting and work demands carefully.
Parents can help with this process by providing a quiet study environment and reinforcing the idea of study first.
Help with Homework Homework is often revision of what is covered in class. As well as regular weekly homework, your child may have assessments such as assignments or projects with due dates. You can access the Department of Education’s tips and resources regarding homework by going to the following link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/practical-help-for-parents-and-carers/help-with-homework
Sentral Parent Portal The Sentral Parent Portal is available for all parents/carers who have access to the internet and have a current email. The Parent Portal allows parents/carers to communicate with school on absences and issues, view attendance each day/period, change details/medical details, view reports, see student behaviour and more. Please contact the school if you require any assistance in accessing the Parent Portal.

Year 9 Green English
Due to the large numbers of Year 9 students, we have decided to split the Year 9 English Green class into two separate classes so as to best meet student needs. At the moment, our space cannot comfortably cater for the number of students involved.

English Combined Classes—Seating
It has been brought to my attention that some parents are concerned their students are sitting on the floor in our new 21st Century Learning Space. Please rest assure, that while there is seating available on cushions on the floor, no student is forced to sit in these places and we have a wide range of traditional type seats and desks available. Students opt to use learning spaces in the classroom that best suit their learning needs. These are seating arrangements by their own choice, unless students are disruptive, whereby they are asked to sit in a traditional seating space. We envisage a wider range of furniture options for the future, but in the best interests of the school and our students, we need to make carefully executed decisions on the types of furniture we purchase in order to have the most useful options at the best prices.

Find all ordered triples (a, b, c). Problem #2: (Intermediate Division: Years 9 & 10) At Math's Grocers, Alan stocks apples and Pru stocks pears. Year 12 HSC Drama
This month the HSC Drama students travelled to Sydney to attend workshops with The Arts Unit and Belvoir Street Theatre. They also attended the OnStage Showcase of the best performances of the 2018 HSC.
In HSC Drama, students are required to complete three components: a practical group performance, an individual project and a written examination. The excursion was specifically designed to help them build skills and understanding in the practical components of the course.
At The Arts Unit students spent two hours working with senior HSC markers on their individual projects in separate tutorials. These tutorials were tailored specifically to their own choices of costume design, scriptwriting, performance or critical analysis. Here they were able to look through Band 6 exemplars, further understand criteria and ask questions from seasoned HSC markers specific to their own projects. This was an absolutely amazing opportunity for them all.
At Belvoir Street Theatre students participated in a two hour session tailored to group project performance skills. Mixing with HSC students from other schools, they were taken through a whole range of practical ‘tips’ for play-building by Michael, a professional actor with the Belvoir Street company.
To top it all off they then viewed OnStage at the Seymour Centre which gave them a chance to watch and analyse live Band 6 performances in Drama.
Throughout it all the students represented the school brilliantly, were engaged, positive and really made the most of all the opportunities they were given. They were a great group to take away and did GIHS proud.

Ambulance Cover Scheme
In the event that a NSW school student is provided with emergency ambulance services within NSW, an invoice will be generated in the name of the person to whom these services have been provided. On receipt of the invoice the parent/guardian should:
If the parent/guardian has private health insurance, a health care card, pensioner concession card or a Commonwealth Health Seniors Card then these details should be recorded in the relevant section on the back of the invoice, and returned to NSW Ambulance.
If the parent/guardian has no other form of ambulance insurance they should forward the invoice to the student's school. The school will provide official certification that the services are covered, and forward it to NSW Ambulance.
