The project is implemented by Minority Rights Center and financed by Open Society Roma Initiatives from Budapest. The project will carry out background research on the situation of Roma in 12 cities across 7 countries of the Decade of Roma Inclusion (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia). The research will focus on the situation of Roma in 12 selected major cities across Decade countries with significant Roma populations, looking in particular at the extent to which local policy addresses inclusion and equal opportunities, seeks to include Roma in the policy-making process and how social, economic and political needs and aspirations of Roma communities are addressed. In each selected city, monitoring will focus on the following general areas: health, education, employment, local media, consultation and participation, identity and safety and security.

The selected cities are: Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Belgrade (Serbia), Bucharest (Romania), Kosice (Slovakia), Kumanovo (Macedonia), Miskolc (Hungary), Nis (Serbia), Ostrava (Czech Republic), Pecs (Hungary), Skopje (Macedonia), Sofia and Vidin (Bulgaria). “Roma community in Nis is big. They are our neighbours and we live and work together. For the City of Nis as local self-government, it is very important to learn more based on the result of the research that would be carried out within this project so that we could have better insight into real living conditions of Roma people in Nis and into their needs so that we could respond adequately to them. More than 500 musicians from all over the world performed on five stages (Earth and Sky Stage, Open Stage, Matinee Stage, River Stage and Midnight Jam Session Stage). The organizers of the festival estimated this year event with more than 80 concerts in five cities in Serbia as a success. The most memorable ones were the performance by Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Opus Five, John Patitucci, Brand New Heavies and many others. Once again the festival proved its uniqueness by blending Balkan music tradition and all kinds of jazz music. From the very beginning, the concept of the festival (apart from the “traditional” forms of jazz,) was based primarily on the fusion of jazz and the ethnic traditions of different parts of the world, especially with the traditions of Balkans. The most famous jazz magazine in the world “Downbeat” says that Nisville festival not only promotes jazz as a music genre originated on the American continent, but also music traditions of the Balkans, and especially the combination of these two styles, which resulted in presenting the music of the Balkans as a new world trend. At the traditional reception at Nis City Hall before the official beginning of the Festival,Nis City Mayor Zoran Perisic welcomed the

distinguished musicians from all over the world saying that the elite of the performers who were present at the festival this year testified that we succeeded in putting Nis on the world map. The efforts done by Mr. Ivan Blagojevic, the director of festival, in organizing this festival year after year should be recognized. Special preparations should be made for next year when the City of Nis would be celebrating Edict of Milan signing anniversary. Then plan is to bring more than 100 musicians to Nis and to have more than 20 stages in towns all over Serbia. The number of volunteers who were interested in being part of Nisville Festival this year pointed out to importance of the festival. Out 770 volunteers from 28 countries who applied 350 were selected to be :assistants to team leaders, host to the public, host to the musicians, PR, press officers, logistic and field support, security and workshop organizers. Mayor Perisic spent some time with the volunteers before the beginning of the festival and in his welcoming speech to them he said that Nisville Jazz Festival would not be possible without the help of the dedicated volunteers who donated their time, energy and creativity every year to produce this authentic event.

29th Nisville International Jazz festival (August 16-19) came to its end after six festival days.
