LRIT & e-NAV / objectives of the demo
Context:
LRIT: IMO SOLAS regulation.
Sharing of ship positions between all SOLAS Contracting Governements
e-Navigation requires sharing of information
COMSAR-17 report: “explore possible use of the existing LRIT shore-
based infrastructure to facilitate exchange of certain e-navigation
information in the future”
MSC 90 report: e-navigation implementation strategy:“Norway is
expected to carry out a similar test in the Polar region. The test bed
would be based on the IHO's S-100 standard, and also include LRIT
infrastructure, which might be suitable for a shore based e-navigation
network in the future”
Objectives of the test bed:
Demonstrate, through a given use case (SAR) interest and feasibility to
exchange useful data via existing LRIT infrastructure
Provide recommendations on the best way forward (technical changes
required, main challenges, cost benefit analysis, realistic planning)
Information exchange
