Synchronous e-Learning

• Class conducted through streaming audio, streaming video, or through a chat room.

Asynchronous e-Learning

• Students access training on their own time and work at their own pace

• Communicate with the instructor or other students through e-mail and discussion boards.

5. Accessibility

Characteristics

Differences between e-Learning and Traditional Learning

E-Learning Traditional Learning

Employ more “active” learning Involve more “passive” learning

Instructors “delivering” knowledge More learner-focused

Instructors guide the learners and model good learning techniques

Most course delivery is verbal

Higher percentages of student participation occur in online classes

Higher-achieving, outgoing, verbal students have the best participation in these courses

Written communication is much more important for the online class than for a traditional one

Technology is a secondary factor

Pluses and Minuses of e-Learning

Pluses Minuses

Less time is spent commutingTeachers need to learn to perform their jobs differently

Online classes are better for part-time students who work

Often online classes are more time-consuming than traditional ones

Location is not importantSometimes it is difficult to transfer course content to an online format

Classes can be more customized and flexible

Students and teachers need the proper equipment and accessibility for the course

Types of Users (Humanware)

From these characteristics we can derive the types of users:

1. Flexibility

2. Location

3. Career Advancement

4. Age

5. Physical Condition

Reasons to take online courses

Types of Users (Humanware)

• Commitment

• Motivation

• Organization

• Self-directed learner

• Access to the technology necessary to participate in

online education

• Enjoy sitting in front of your computer

• Enjoy working alone for relatively long periods of time (a

couple of hours at a time)

Characteristics for Success
