Annotations
Annotating Text
(You have already been doing this with your independent reading “bookmarks”.)
As an "active reader," you already know that when you read textbook assignments, you should have
questions in your mind. As you read, you should be looking for the answers to these questions. You
should also have a pencil in hand so that you can "annotate" your text. As the word suggests, you
"take notes" in your textbook.
Unlike "highlighting," which is a passive activity, the process of annotating text helps you to stay
focused and involved with your textbook. You'll nd that the process of taking notes as you read will
help you to concentrate better. It will also help you to monitor and improve your comprehension. If
you come across something that you don't understand or that you need to ask you instructor about,
you'll be able to quickly make note of it, and then go on with your reading.
The following is a list of some techniques that you can use to annotate text:
● Underline important terms.
● Circle de nitions and meanings.
● Write key words and de nitions in the margin.
● Signal where important information can be found with key words or symbols in the margin.
● Write short summaries in the margin at the end of sub-units.
● Write the questions in the margin next to the section where the answer is found.
● Indicate steps in a process by using numbers in the margin.
For each chapter, you will annotate the text. Since you do not own the book, your annotations will be
written on a worksheet. You will be required to:
a.) comment on vocabulary
b.) write questions
c.) nd “words of wisdom”
d.) make connections.
These are NOT to be full sentences, but rather bulleted notes for comprehension and discussion. Don’t worry
about capitalization, punctuation or spelling. I know, that feels weird, right?

Common core standard:
★ CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.7 Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio,
filmed, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each
medium (e.g., lighting, sound, color, or camera focus and angles in a film).
Description: Your job is to create a picture related to what you read in your section. It can be a sketch,
cartoon, collage (cutting out pictures or words from a magazine or newspaper), diagram (Venn, web,
etc.), digitally created image, etc. The image can be based on something you read, something that the
reading remind you about, or an element of the story (plot, character, setting). No stick figures are
allowed. The picture should be thoughtfully formatted: What is the central focus? What colors are
included? How does this picture represent your reading?
Presentation Plan: When the Discussion Director invites you to participate, you may show your
picture without commenting on it, and let your group members individually guess what your picture
means. After everyone has had a turn to guess, it is your turn to tell them what your picture means,
where it came from in the text, or what it represents to you. You may make your picture on the BACK
of this worksheet or on a separate page.
