Doch was

Lily Pennington looks at the fruit and vegetables in her

shop and smiles. The

early morning sunshine

makes the apples, or

anges, bananas and

vege tables look almost

like a rainbow.

Pennington’s greengro-

cer is in the middle of

Ramsgate, a seaside town on England’s south coast.

The family business is 163 years old now. That’s ex

actly one hundred years older than Lily is. But this

Monday morning in late September, Lily feels older

than the shop. She is

tired and her head hurts.

It’s not easy for her to

work ten hours a day, six

days a week. And it’s not

easy to compete with

the big supermarkets.

Small shops are closing

everywhere.

Lily looks at her watch.

It’s half past six. The lorry

that is bringing exotic fruits

from South America is late.

She hopes there isn’t a

problem.

Suddenly, Lily cannot

breathe very well. There are

sharp pains around her

heart and she starts to

panic.

Oh no, she thinks, not now!

It is hard for Lily to move,

but slowly she goes to the old-fashioned telephone on

the table.

In the flat above the shop, 17yearold Tasha Pennington

is getting dressed for school. The sound of the phone

ringing so early in the morning is strange.

I wonder who’s calling, she thinks as she goes over to

answer it.

“Tasha Pennington speaking.”

“Tasha, please come quickly,” Lily cries into the phone.

“Grandma, what’s wrong?” Tasha asks.

She’s very afraid. And all she hears is the sound of some

thing falling to the floor.

Tasha runs down the stairs to the shop. Next to the table,

her grandma is lying on the floor.

“Tasha,” Lily can just say. “The delivery. Don’t...”

Then she faints. Tasha tries to wake her up, but her

grandma doesn’t open her eyes. Tasha starts crying while

she makes two quick phone

calls. While she’s waiting for

the ambulance, she does

the bit of first aid she knows

from school.

It’s so typical of her grandma

to worry about a stupid de

livery when she’s obviously

having a heart attack, Tasha

thinks.

That gives her an idea and she makes another call.

In the café across the street from Pennington’s, a man is

getting nervous.

What’s going on? he wonders. The lorry is normally here

by now. I’ll have to leave for work very soon.

He drinks some of his tea, but it is still too hot, so he

adds some more milk to it. Then he hears the sound of

sirens – and the sound is getting louder.

To his surprise, an ambulance stops in front of Penning

ton’s. At the same time, a

teenage boy runs up to the

shop.

Something is wrong, the

man thinks, and takes

out his mobile phone.

Then the lorry finally ar

rives. Damn. The boss isn’t

Tasha is very relieved when

the ambulance arrives to take

her grandma to hospital. She’s

also happy to see that the

part-time shop assistant, Tim

Barlow, is there to help. Tim is

also seventeen, but he’s new

to Ramsgate and the shop.

Tasha doesn’t know him very well, but she thinks he’s nice.

She also likes his brown eyes and blonde hair.

“Oh Tim, thank you so much for coming so quickly. Will

you help the lorry driver put the cartons of fruits inside

the shop?”

“No problem, Tasha. Can I do anything else for you?”

“Well, can you stay here until my grandma’s sister Pe

nelope can come from London to manage things?”

Tasha has tears in her dark blue eyes. “And can you do

me another favour?”

“Sure, Tasha. What is it?” Tim asks.

He hopes she will ask him to stay at the shop all day. He

doesn’t mind missing school. But that isn’t what Tasha

wants.

“When you get to school, can you tell the secretary why I

won’t be there today? I’ll call later to tell you how grand

ma is doing.”

“Of course, Tasha. And don’t worry, I’m sure your grandma

will be fine,” Tim says.

He wants to put his arm around Tasha. But he’s too shy and

she’s too pretty and popular to be interested in a boy like

him. To his surprise, she gives him a quick hug. Then she

climbs into the ambulance and takes her grandma’s hand.

Tim watches Tasha drive away. He can smell her light per

fume on his shirt. It’s nice and softly sweet, just like

Tasha, he thinks.

That evening, Tim is sitting on a small, empty beach near

Ramsgate Harbour. His new

friend, 19yearold Jacob

Palmer, is sitting beside him.

It’s windy and chilly on the

beach, but the two boys don’t

mind. They have lots to talk

about. They also don’t want

anyone to hear them or see

what they are doing.

“So tell me, Tim, do you

smoke often?” Jacob asks. Then he inhales again deeply

from the joint in his hand.

“Um, no, not much,” he lies. “Just sometimes to relax.”

Just then, Tim’s mobile rings. It’s Tasha – and now he feels

bad about smoking with Jacob.

“Hi Tasha. How’s your grandma?” he asks.

“My grandma’s still in hospital. It’s her heart, and it is ser-

ious. She’s getting medicine to keep her unconscious, so

I can’t talk to her. I hope she’ll be a little better tomorrow.”

“Oh, Tasha, I’m sorry. Let me know if I can do anything.”

“Well, I’ll be home in a few minutes. Maybe you can come

to the flat later and tell me what I missed at school?”

Tim’s heart jumps. He wants to say yes, but he doesn’t

want Tasha to see him like this. He tries to think of an

excuse.

“I’ll try. But, um, I need a few hours to, um, finish some

thing.” That sounds stupid, even to his stoned ears.

“Okay, but not too late,” Tasha

says.

Jacob is laughing quietly

when Tim finishes the call.

“Wow, Tim, you already have

a girlfriend! That’s fast work!”

Tim starts to deny it, but he

doesn’t get the chance. Jacob

suddenly jumps up and

throws the joint towards the

water. He misses and the joint lands in the sand. Then Tim

sees why Jacob is so agitated. Two police constables are

coming down onto the beach. The light from one of their

torches shines on Jacob’s face.

“I’m leaving!” he whispers to Tim.

Then he starts running.

Tim calls after him, “But Jake, what about my...”

“Hey, you! Stop right now!” shouts Constable Corrie

Clarke from the Ramsgate Police.

She’s coming down to the beach fast. The other con

stable, Davey Redmond, starts to run after Jacob. Con

stable Clarke sees something burning on the sand and

goes to look at it. She doesn’t touch it, but the smell is

familiar. She turns to Tim.

“Young man, what do you know about this?” she asks,

pointing to the joint.

Tim is very worried – and

scared now. His high is over.

Before he can answer the

constable’s questions, Davey

Redmond comes back. He’s

alone.

“I’m sorry, Corrie, the other

young man is just too fast. Or

maybe I’m too slow.” Con

stable Redmond is in his late thirties and he is a little

bit overweight. “Anyway, he’s gone.”

“Don’t worry, Davey. I think I know who he is.” She looks

at Tim. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Tim Barlow and...” Tim stops speaking when his

phone is ringing again. “Can I answer the call, Con

stable?”

“All right, Tim,” she tells him. “But keep it short.”

Tim is surprised to hear Tasha’s voice.

“Tim! Oh please come right away. There was a break-in

at the shop! And Great-Aunt Penelope is missing!”

“Tasha, calm down. Are the police there?”

“No, I need to call them.”

“You don’t have to. Um, there are two constables stand

ing right here beside me.”

Tim gives his phone to Constable Clarke and listens while

she talks to Tasha. Now he’s even more worried.

Constable Clarke tells Tasha to stay where she is and

not to touch anything until

the police arrive. Then

Clarke quickly calls the po

the breakin. The dispatch-

er says that Clarke and

Redmond are closest to

Pennington’s. They should

go there right now.

“What do we do with young

Mr Barlow here?” Constable Redmond asks his partner.

“He’s coming with us, Davey. Tim has a lot to explain

about that joint over there.”

Constable Clarke then takes out a tissue from her coat

pocket. She makes sure the

joint isn’t burning any more,

picks it up with the tissue

and puts it in a small, plas

you. Please, let’s hurry.

On the way to Penning

ton’s, Tim explains the

situation with Tasha’s

grandmother. Five min

utes later, they arrive at

the greengrocer’s. Tasha

opens the door for Tim

and the constables. Her

face is very white.

“Thank goodness you’re

finally here!” she tells them and takes Tim’s hand.

He can’t believe his eyes when he looks around inside.

The shop looks completely different from the way it was

that morning. Fruit and vege tables are all over the floor.

The door to the stockroom is open. The cartons inside it

are a mess. They are open, too, and the bananas and

pineapples from South America are everywhere but in the

boxes.

Constable Clarke looks around carefully, then speaks

quietly with Redmond.

“Davey, call the police station,” she tells her partner. “We

need a forensics team and an investigator here as soon

as possible.”

Then she starts questioning Tasha.

“No, Constable, I don’t.

What I want to know most

is, where is my GreatAunt

Penelope?”

“Does she have a mobile

phone?”

“Yes, but she’s not answering it. What can you do to find

her?”

“Perhaps she’s visiting your grandma in hospital.”

“Oh, why didn’t I think of that? I’ll call the hospital right

now.”

Constable Clarke turns to Tim while Tasha makes the call.

“Tim, can you tell if anything is missing?”

Tim looks at the cash register. It’s open, too, but he can

see there is still money inside it.

“I don’t know for sure, but there really isn’t much to

steal. Mrs Pennington never keeps much money in the

shop. I think she has a safe upstairs in her flat.”

Tasha finishes her call to the hospital. “Constable Clarke,

she’s not there. Oh, I hope GreatAunt Penelope isn’t in

danger.”

Just then, the shop door opens and a short, thin, elderly

woman with curly grey hair walks in. She’s carrying a bag

of takeaway Chinese food. When she sees the police and

the condition of the shop, the bag falls right out of her

hand. Sweet and sour chicken, rice, vegetables and sauce

join the mess on the floor.

“Oh my goodness,” Penelope Pennington cries out. “What

In her hospital room, Lily

Pennington slowly opens

her eyes. Her head is ach-

ing and she’s very thirsty. At first, she doesn’t know where

she is. Then she sees all the machines in the room. She

remembers and tries to put a hand on her heart, but she’s

too weak and she closes her eyes again. What a horrible

mess, she thinks.

Lily doesn’t see the door to her room open. A man who

is wearing a doctor’s white coat comes inside. Just as Lily

notices that she isn’t alone, the man puts a hand over her

mouth. Another hand closes around her throat.

“Keep your eyes closed, Lily,” he says. “And be quiet!”

Lily does what the man says. She has no choice.

“You have one chance. I’m going to take my hand off your

mouth, and you’re going to tell me where the merchan-

dise is.”

Lily can feel her heart beat-

ing faster. It hurts so much.

Her throat hurts, too. She

tries to answer his question,

though.

“I...I don’t know,” she whis

pers. “My heart...”

One of the machines starts

beeping loudly. The man

knows that he only has a few

seconds before a real doctor

“Okay. I’m leaving now. But find the merchandise quickly,

Lily. My boss wants it tomor

row. And remember, he isn’t

a patient person.”

He laughs, which frightens

Lily even more than his

words do.

“Cheat my boss, and you and

your pretty granddaughter

will be very, very sorry.”

“Hey, you there!” A young

nurse is standing in the doorway. “Who are you and what

are you doing here?”

The man doesn’t answer. He covers his face with part of

the doctor’s coat and runs out of the room. The nurse

doesn’t have time to run after him. The machine that is

monitoring Lily’s heart suddenly makes a different sound.

Her heart isn’t beating any more.

Detective Inspector Rohan Dawar looks at the forensics

team who are busy doing their jobs at Pennington’s. He’s

not happy about being here so late. But the Ramsgate

Police Department doesn’t have enough inspectors at the

moment. That means Dawar is working a lot of overtime

these days. And so, right now, his wife and two children

are having a nice dinner at home without him – again.

The flash from a camera brings his thoughts back to

He goes over to Constable

Clarke.

She’s very good at her job,

he thinks, even though

she’s so young – only 27. In

a few years, she’ll be an in

spector, too. But there’s

one thing he doesn’t understand.

“Constable, why is this boy here?” he asks, pointing at

Tim.

Tasha, Tim and Penelope are outside on the pavement.

“Well, sir, I’m sorry, but I didn’t know what else to do with

him.”

Clarke quickly tells Inspector Dawar about the scene at

the beach. “Here’s the joint, Inspector. We still need to

question him about it. I believe the other boy’s name is

Jacob Palmer.”

That name rings a bell with Dawar. “Ah, Jacob Palmer.

He’s a troublemaker, isn’t he?”

“Yes, sir. He’s a school drop-out. He sometimes works

helping local fishermen. We think he makes extra money

selling drugs. We don’t have any proof, though.”

Inspector Dawar looks at his watch and then lets his

eyes move around the shop again.

Drugs, he thinks. I wonder...

“You’re right about that,

Inspector. Is that all?”

“When you finish with Bar

“Inspector!” Constable Redmond almost runs into the

shop. “I think you need to go to the hospital immedi-

It is midnight and Tim can’t sleep. His mum and dad are

so angry with him. Constable Clarke’s information really

shocked them. Tim really doesn’t see why everyone is mak-

ing such a big fuss – it was

only one joint. Now his

mum is going to take him to

the police station in the

morning, but not “first

thing”. First he has to go to

school for a maths test. Tim

groans to himself.

He decides to get out of bed and go outside for some

fresh air. Maybe that will help him to calm down.

There’s a big apple tree right next to his bedroom. Tim

carefully opens the window and climbs down the tree. A

voice calls out from the darkness and almost scares him

to death.

“Hey, Tim!” Jacob calls out. “I’m over here.”

He’s standing across the street. Tim isn’t sure if he’s

happy to see his friend, but the two of them have unfin-

ished business. And Tim has to tell Jacob about his

decision.

“I have excellent news! Al

most all the goods have,

um, new homes,” Jacob

says and smiles in a stu

pid way.

Tim wonders if Jake is still

stoned.

“Here, Tim, this is for you,”

Jacob says.

He hands Tim a bundle of money. There’s a lot of it.

“Bloody hell, Jake! No, this isn’t good news. It means big

trouble.”

“What are you talking about? It’s what you want, isn’t it?”

Jacob asks. “You need all that money to buy the many

things you can’t afford.”

Tim thinks about this. Yes, he really does want a smart

phone, a tablet PC and some expensive clothes. It’s easy

money, too. But he’s worried that there will be a high

price to pay for it.

It’s too late now, though, and Tim decides he will think

about it later. Jacob has

something in his other

hand.

“And this is just a little

present for you, mate.

It’s my way of saying

thank you.”

Tim looks at the two

joints Jacob offers him. He knows he should just say no.

But he could really use one right now. He sighs, then he

takes the joints.

“Thanks a lot, Jake. I have to

go now. See you around.”

Tim doesn’t climb back up

the tree immediately. He

waits until Jacob leaves,

then he looks at the joints

and thinks, why not? One

more to help him relax and

forget about this really crazy day and the tomorrow that’s

coming.

At the same time, Lily’s doctor is talking to Tasha and

Penelope in the hospital waiting room. Inspector Dawar

is with them. He’s sending another text message to his

wife.

“Your grandmother is

lucky to be alive, Tasha,”

the doctor says. “We were

just in time and I think

she will be okay.”

“When can I speak with her,

Doctor?” asks Inspector

Dawar.

“I can’t tell you that, In

plies. “Mrs Pennington almost died twice today. She’s

“I understand, Doctor. But someone is trying to kill her!

I’m hoping that she can tell me who that person is. Can

you let me see her just for one minute?”

The doctor shakes her

head. “No, I’m sorry, but

not tonight. Let’s see how

she is tomorrow. Call me

around ten a.m.”

Inspector Dawar frowns,

but he accepts the doctor’s decision.

“All right then, I’ll do that. Constable Redmond will stay

outside Mrs Pennington’s room tonight, to make sure

she’s safe.”

“Thank you, Inspector,” Tasha tells him. Then she turns to

the doctor. “Will you also call me, Doctor? I mean, you

know...”

“Of course, Tasha. But don’t worry. Your grandmother

should sleep through the night. You and your greataunt

should go home now and get some sleep, too.”

Tasha doesn’t want to even think about going home.

There’s the whole mess in the shop to worry about. And

she’s scared. Maybe the person who broke in will come

back again.

Inspector Dawar sees the fear in Tasha’s eyes. And he

knows why she is afraid.

“Excuse me, Miss Pennington. I don’t think it’s a good

idea for you and your greataunt to sleep above the shop

tonight. It’s a crime scene. Can you stay with friends, or

perhaps in a hotel?”

“That’s very kind of you, Inspector,” Penelope replies. “We

won’t touch anything in the shop, I mean the crime scene.

But no one is going to scare me and my greatniece!

We’re sleeping in the flat. Now, Inspector, will you give

us a lift, or should I call a taxi?”

Inspector Dawar says he will drive them home. It’s an

other decision he doesn’t like, but he knows it’s a bad

idea to argue with women, especially a woman like

Penelope Pennington.

The next morning, Jacob leaves home very early. He has

a little job helping a fisher

man at the harbour.

Soon I won’t have to do

this any more, he thinks as

he starts the tenminute

walk in the dark. Maybe

Tim can get some more of

that great grass. I can sell it

to my contacts, and we can

divide the profits. I won

der, though, why he won’t

tell me where it comes

from.

Jacob is so busy daydreaming that he doesn’t notice the

man who is coming up behind him. Suddenly, the man

grabs Jacob and puts a knife to his throat.

“You are selling something that isn’t yours to sell, Jacob.

It belongs to someone else – and that someone wants it

back.”

Jacob wonders how the man can know this – and why he

even cares. Now Jacob is really scared.

“Look, I don’t have the stuff any more. It’s all sold.”

The man turns Jacob around and hits him hard on the

mouth.

“Maybe that will keep you quiet! Now then, here is what

you and your young friend Tim are going to do.”

When Tim wakes up the next morning, he still feels stoned

from the grass he smoked the night before. It’s hard for

him to get out of bed. When

he is finally dressed, there’s

no time for breakfast with

his family. He rides his bi

cycle to school and arrives

just as the bell is ringing for

his first class. In his class

room, the teacher is al

ready handing out the test.

“I’m sorry I’m late, Mr At

wood, I...”

“Just sit down, Tim. Here’s

your test.”

Then Robert Atwood looks at Tim strangely. “Are you all

right, Tim? Your eyes are red.”

Tim is embarrassed. Now his face is as red as his eyes.

“I’m all right, Mr Atwood. I just need more sleep. I...um...

I have to go as soon as I fin

Robert Atwood reads the

note. It doesn’t say why Tim

has to leave school and that

makes the teacher curious.

“Where are you going, Tim?”

“Um...well, I really don’t

want to say, Mr Atwood.”

“Well, you don’t have to, of course. But Tim, you can al

ways talk to me about your problems.”

“Thanks, Mr Atwood, but it’s no big deal. Really.”

At the police station, Inspector Dawar and Constable

Clarke are already working. Davey Redmond is off duty

now. Another constable is at the hospital outside Lily’s

room.

“What do we do next, In

spector?” Corrie Clarke

asks.

“Well, when Tim Barlow

gets here, I want you to

One hour later, Tim is sitting in the police station inter

view room with Constable Clarke. His mother is waiting

outside.

At first, the constable just

looks at Tim for at least three

minutes. To Tim it feels like

hours before she finally speaks.

“So, Tim, tell me, how often do you smoke grass?”

This seems like an easy question and Tim answers hon-

estly.

“Actually, my very first joint was yesterday evening.”

“Really?” Constable Clarke sounds a little sceptical. “And,

what do you think? Do you like it?”

“Like what?”

“The feeling it gives you.

Being high or stoned or

whatever.”

“It’s okay,” Tim answers

with a little smile.

That’s actually his first lie.

He loves the feeling.

adds. “Look where I am now because of it. Am I in a lot

of trouble?”

“That depends, Tim. Where did you get the joint?”

This is the tricky part. Tim can’t tell her the whole truth.

“Well, Constable, last night I’m walking along the har

bour. Then I see this thing that looks like a cigarette. I pick

it up. Then I see that guy walking towards me. I don’t

know him very well but we start talking. He tells me what

it really is, and we decide to smoke together. That’s it.”

“What an interesting story,

Tim. Excuse me just a min

ute, please.”

Constable Clarke leaves the

room and goes to talk to

Inspector Dawar.

“What do you think, sir?”

Corrie asks.

“Well, Corrie, Tim Barlow is obviously not telling the

truth.”

“Should I put more pressure on him?”

“No, I have a better idea. Act as if you believe him, let him

go and follow him. Just make sure he doesn’t see you.”

Just then, the forensic team leader, Marie Browne, comes

in.

“Here’s our first report, Inspector. You were right about

Tim is smiling when he and his mum leave the police sta

tion. He thinks his troubles are over now. His smile disap-

pears, though, when he sees Jake waiting next to his

mum’s car.

“Hello, Tim. Can I talk to you for a second?”

There is blood on the corner of Jacob’s mouth and he

looks scared.

“Tim? Who is this?” Charlotte Barlow asks her son.

“Um, just someone from school. Listen, Mum, I can walk

back to school. I’ll see you later. Don’t worry, everything

is okay.”

Mrs Barlow isn’t sure what to think. Tim is acting so

strangely, but the police seem satisfied. She sighs and

says goodbye. Then she gets in the car and drives away.

“Tim! You have to tell me! Where did you get that grass?”

Jacob demands.

“I can’t tell you, Jake. But what’s wrong with your mouth?

Did someone attack you?”

“No, stupid! I fell down the stairs,” Jake says sarcas

tically. “Of course somebody attacked me. It was early

this morning down at the harbour.”

“But who was it? And why did they do this to you?”

“I think you know why! My attacker says that you stole the

grass that you gave me to sell. Tim, he wants it back!”

“But we don’t have it any more! What are we going to

do?”

“You have to give me back all the money, Tim. I also

need extra money to pay

for the stuff that we

smoked. Maybe if we pay

him for the grass, he won’t

he adds.

Tim sees all his dreams of

Jacob decides to take it. When Tim hears the attacker’s

name, his eyes open wide. Jacob was right. It’s very hard

to believe. Now Tim has to act quickly. He leaves Jacob

standing there and starts running. It’s time to come

clean.

Inspector Dawar looks sadly at Lily Pennington. She’s

lying in her hospital bed and is very tired and weak. He

hopes his questions won’t

give her another heart at

tack.

“Mrs Pennington?” he says

quietly and smiles at Lily

when she opens her eyes.

“I have a few questions for you. Please don’t worry or get

agitated, okay?”

Lily nods her head. Yes. She knows why the inspector is

here.

He holds a photograph in front of her face. It’s from the

surveillance cameras from the café opposite her shop.

Lily looks frightened when she sees it.

“Do you know this man?”

He smiles again when she nods yes. “Is he the person

who attacked you last night?”

Lily hesitates for a second before she whispers, “Yes,

he is.”

“And, Mrs Pennington, is this the man who comes early

Lily says yes again. There are tears in her eyes.

Inspector Dawar sighs be

“And how much money

does Robert Atwood give

you for the grass inside the

bananas?”

Lily wonders how the in

spector knows all this, but

it doesn’t really matter now.

“Ten per cent of the street value.”

She speaks the words so quietly that Inspector Dawar

almost can’t hear them.

“Very good, Mrs Pennington. We’re almost finished now.

Is Tim Barlow part of the drug smuggling ring? Or did he

just find the grass by chance?”

“No. Tim’s a good boy. A nice boy. It’s all my fault.”

Lily is so sorry about everything.

I have to explain to the inspector why I’m involved in this

dangerous business, she tells herself. I hope he under

stands. I need the extra money. Without it, I’m going to

have to close Pennington’s.

She tries to speak, but it’s too hard for her.

“Not now, Mrs Pennington,” Inspector Dawar interrupts

her. “Tell me the rest later. You just concentrate on

getting better.”

But Lily needs to say one more thing. “That teacher, Mr

Inspector, he doesn’t work

alone!”

“Don’t worry about Robert

Atwood. We will have a

good long talk, and then

I’m sure he will want to

make a deal. He’ll tell me all about his drug smuggling

partner.”

Tim is out of breath when he gets back to school. He still

can’t believe that his maths teacher is a drug dealer. And

that Mr Atwood is Jake’s attacker! It’s just too much.

Tim is going to find his teacher. Maybe he and Mr Atwood

can talk about everything and make a deal. Tim doesn’t

have to look very hard, though. Mr Atwood is coming out

of the school in a hurry. He’s talking on his mobile and

doesn’t see Tim walking towards him.

“Yes, Jacob will get us the money,” Robert Atwood says

into his phone.

He stops talking and listens for a minute. “Well, I’m sorry,

but that’s the best I can do. The boys don’t have our mer

chandise any more.”

Then he sees Tim. “I have to go,” he whispers.

That’s when Tim forgets all about talking to Mr Atwood

and loses control. He hits his teacher in the stomach as

hard as he can. Robert Atwood drops his phone. Then Tim

punches Mr Atwood in the mouth.

Constable Clarke sees what is happening and comes

running.

“Tim! Stop that right now!” she orders.

“Yes, Tim! Calm down!”

It’s Inspector Dawar, arriving from the hospital.

“Inspector, Constable, thank God you’re here! Arrest that

boy! He’s a dealer!”

“No, I’m not,” Tim shouts. “Not really. But you are!”

“That’s enough, you two,”

Inspector Dawar com-

mands. “You are both going

to come with me to the po

lice station. But first, Mr At

wood, maybe you can tell

me who your partner is?”

“Partner?” the teacher asks

and shakes his head. “I

don’t know what you are

talking about.”

“Check his phone, Inspector!” Tim says. “I think Mr At

wood was just talking to somebody about the grass.”

“Good idea, Tim,” Inspector Dawar says.

He picks up Robert Atwood’s phone from the ground and

hits the redial button.

When the phone starts ringing in his flat, the boss of the

smuggling ring is inhaling deeply on a joint. Yesterday and

last night were hard. He doesn’t want to answer the phone

right now, but he looks at the display to see who it is.

Damn! He has to take the call.

“What is it now, Atwood?” he answers impatiently.

Inspector Dawar cannot believe his ears. He knows that

voice! It’s such a surprise that at first he can’t speak. He

puts the phone on loudspeaker. Now Constable Clarke

can hear, too.

“Robert? Are you there? What’s going on?”

Now the voice sounds a little panicked.

Constable Clarke’s eyes widen. She also can’t believe it.

Inspector Dawar covers the mobile’s microphone and

whispers to her.

“Call for back-up, Corrie. Send them to his flat.”

Then he uncovers the phone. “No, this isn’t your partner.

Actually, it’s me, Davey.”

Constable Davey Redmond is

so shocked to hear his boss

that he almost drops the joint.

“Inspector? But what...”

“Don’t, Davey. Don’t even

think about denying it – or try

ing to run away. I’m arresting Robert Atwood right now.

Another team of officers is on their way to arrest you.”

Constable Redmond tries to think quickly. He has no idea

how much Dawar knows or can prove. He also doesn’t

know what Robert Atwood is going to tell the police.

Davey Redmond does know that time is running out.

Evidence! he thinks. Is there any evidence against me in

the flat?

Then he remembers the joint in his hand. He puts it slow

ly to his lips and inhales once more. After all, it could be

his last smoke for a very long time.
