E-COMMERCE: YOUR PATH TO GLOBAL GROWTH 5

TO GROW YOUR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS THROUGH E-COMMERCE CHANNELS, YOU NEED TO CONSIDER:

GETTING STARTED

PRICING, COSTS AND DUTIES

TARGET MARKETS

REGULATIONS & RESTRICTIONS SHIPPING

At DHL, we understand the challenges of e-commerce.

We already help many leading retailers grow their international online sales, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST E-COMMERCE PLATFORM FOR MY BUSINESS?

Clearly tell your customers that you’re taking international orders!

HOW DO I PRICE MY GOODS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL E-COMMERCE MARKET?

• Consider how trading internationally could affect your cash flow: understand all the costs of selling globally to get your pricing right, including duties, Customs fees, insurance and shipping.

• Think about how the size and weight of your shipments (their volumetric weight) could impact shipping costs.

• Consider what kind of pricing model to adopt for each market.

DHL’s Trade Automation Service (TAS) can calculate landed costs (duties, taxes, and other import fees), check product compliance, and provide you with the right Commodity Codes for your products and shipments.

Many of your international customers won’t be expecting to pay duties or taxes, especially when receiving gifts. With a Delivery Duties Paid (DDP) service, you as the sender can bill all duty and tax charges back to your account.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST TARGET MARKETS FOR MY BUSINESS – AND SUCCESSFULLY SELL TO THEM?When selecting target markets, consider

• Where your product has already gained interest. Check your web analytics to see who’s looking at your products and where they’re based!

• Where you think there may be a niche for your product.

Your DHL Account Manager can advise you on where demand for your industry and products is growing.

When it comes to selling and exporting your products, you need to

• Research and understand the local marketscape and business culture.

• Consider what adaptations to make to your• Product offering• Cost structure• E-commerce platform’s language

and payment options

• Promote your business and products through the right channels.

WHAT REGULATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS DO I NEED TO BE AWARE OF WHEN EXPORTING?With the right documentation to export your goods from the UK and import them into their destination market, they are sure to arrive safely and on time. Make sure you understand:

• The role of Customs.

• The International Commercial Terms (Incoterms®) for trading abroad.

• If any items you are looking to sell internationally may be prohibited or restricted.

To sell abroad

You need to be set up as an exporter with HMRC with an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number.

Prohibited items

Can vary from country to country and can include products made from animal skins or furs, jewellery, and foodstuffs.

Restricted items
