The agreement lays the foundation for the discussions that will continue
between the two parties that should lead to a possible impact and benefit
agreement (IBA) for this proposed mining operation on Algonquin ancestral
territory. According to Radio-Canada, the Abitibiwinni First Nation would also
obtain an interest in the business, without specifying its value or proportion.
"This agreement sets out the principles agreed upon in order to establish a
harmonious relationship based on trust in order to reconcile the rights of the
Abitibiwinni First Nation with regard to the Authier project," said Chief Monik
Kistabish, in a joint press release. With this first agreement, Pikogan obtains the
creation of joint committees, including one on the environmental issues of the
Authier project. “The establishment of this joint committee on the environment
was an important issue for us. We want to have our say at this level, ”said
Sylvester Trapper, mine liaison officer for the Abitibiwinnni First Nation Council,
in an interview.
It is, moreover, on the whole issue of protecting the environment, more
particularly water, that former chief David Kistabish had expressed significant
reservations about the Sayona Quebec project, in June 2018, after a public
consultation which had taken place in Pikogan.
Towards an IBA
In this context, the agreement takes on all its importance. "This agreement
opens the door to great collaboration and announces fruitful discussions on the
next step, the signing of an agreement on the repercussions and benefits of the
Authier project," said Serge Rouillier, Director of Sustainable Development at
Sayona Quebec, in the joint press release.

The ERA, once it has been negotiated, will need to be approved by Council and
then approved by members of the Abitibiwinni First Nation. "In particular, this
agreement will deal with employability, training and economic development,"
said Sylvester Trapper.
Opening towards North American Lithium
In the joint press release, the Council of the Abitibiwinni First Nation expresses
its openness toward the proposed acquisition of the North American Lithium
mine by Sayona. Let us remember that Pikogan and Lac-Simon had together
passed the stage of the first collaboration agreement with Canada Lithium, in
2012. The two communities have not yet signed an agreement on the
repercussions and benefits for the La mine. Horn.
