Multilevel inverters are becoming increasingly popular forhigh and medium power applications. In the course ofimproving features of multilevel inverters and enhancingtheir competitiveness, hybrid multistage inverter hasbeen introduced. Hybrid inverters reduce the circuit size
and cost for a given number of levels and improvedevices utilization. In this study a three-stage hybridinverter has been designed. The inverter is composed ofhigh-voltage, medium-voltage and low-voltage stages. Two control modes have been proposed to operate the
hybrid inverter: voltage vector approximation mode andspace vector modulation mode. In voltage vector
approximation mode, the proposed control algorithmproduces the inverter voltage vector which is nearest tothe required output while the switching losses have beenminimized. A voltage space vector modulation controltechnique has been developed. This method enables themultistage inverter designed with maximum number oflevels to be operated in pulse width modulation controlmode without subjecting the high voltage stage to highfrequency switching. The voltage vector modulationalgorithm operates the high and medium voltage stageswith low switching frequency regardless of the outputvoltage amplitude. The low voltage stage is controlledusing conventional space vector modulation strategy.

Around the world, Governments are focusing on how toreduce emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and how toreduce dependency and consumption of fossil fuel.Malaysia is not an exception to this movement - the PrimeMinister had delivered Malaysia stand to reduce its carbondioxide emission to 40 per cent by the year 2020. As theworld moves towards an eco friendly future, the
automotive sector plays a vital role in dealing the emission. Many countries have supported the Hybrid/EV Program asone of the ways to reduce GHGs. PROTON being the leaderof the automotive industry in Malaysia has embarked intoseveral initiatives to support to the greener future, one ofwhich is the development and production of aordable, low maintenance and greener cars. Vehicle electrication isamong the PROTONs strategy to oer signicant fueleconomy, emission reduction and e-Mobility forsustainable green mobility solution. Consequently,PROTON has developed Electric Vehicle technologydemonstrators and embarked on eet test vehicle programfor evaluation, design optimization and analysis of driving
behavior as well as customer feedbacks. Consequently,PROTON has developed Electric Vehicle technologydemonstrators and embarked on eet test vehicle programfor evaluation, design optimization and analysis of drivingbehavior as well as customer feedbacks.

In this talk, rst, we summarize a selection of highimpact research work and its connection to innovationresulting in useful and novel products. The areas ofresearch that we seek to summarize are: medicalengineering, global warming, articial (computer)intelligence, power/communication systems andsafety/security systems. In medical engineering weshall look at look at both electrical-thermal systemsand signal based diagnosis and treatment. Second, wepresent a more detailed presentation on challengingresearch and innovation areas in medical andbiomedical engineering, especially, (a) Localization ofthe EEG and MEG signal using a brain electromagneticinverse processor (b) Autism, Epilepsy and Brain
Electromagnetics (c) Simultaneous bio-wave
measurements in medical signal processing fordiagnosis (d) Optimization for Non-invasiveHyperthermia (e) electric circuit modeling of biologicaltissues, and their use in designing and testing new
ideas in medical imaging and invasive/non-invasiveelectromagnetic treatment, instrumentation and
measurements.
Speaker Biography Paul RatnamahilanR. Hooles research interests focus onsignal/image processing ofelectromagnetic signals, especially inmicrowave, medical, security andenergy systems. His earned doctoratedegree in engineering is from theUniversity of Oxford. His ongoing research is in thebroader areas of brain electromagnetic signals inmedicine and computer intelligence, detection,
classication and interpretation of signal sources, andnew sensors and solutions related to global warming, applied wireless technology and smart grids. He hasauthored/coauthored several journal papers and threebooks in his area of specialization. In keeping with thecall of the IEEE to be engaged in society, he has beensignicantly involved in US-based research intopostmodern issues and their impact on society, marriage, family, and the next generation. He is aProfessor of Engineering at the Taylors University .
