DELTA TWP. – Emergency medicine residents from Sparrow Hospital had a chance to experience exactly how some of their patients are rushed to the hospital for treatment, thanks to a unique training exercise coordinated by the Delta Township Fire Department on July 14. Delta had previously sponsored emergency rescue trainings involving extricating car crash victims, but none had involved air transport, according to firefighter/ paramedic Brian Hatfield, who organized the event. The exercise began in the Waverly High School parking lot where a LifeNet of Michigan helicopter touched down at 8: 30 a.m. Flight paramendic Nate Kunik and nurse Bob Weiler explained how their rescue team operates, then doctors had a chance to inspect the copter’s interior and climb aboard.. Resident Rick Maier even decided to lie down on the copter’s stretcher, which was then stowed for flight, to get the perspective of a patient. Then it was on to the Delta Fire Department training building across the street, the former church on the corner of Snow Road and Michigan Avenue. BABYTALK – PART ISo you just found out you’re pregnant. Congratulations! That is wonderful! What is even more amazing is that your baby already has a spine, most of the body organs, arms and legs beginning to form, and its own nervoussystem. And it’s only 5 weeks old! Miraculous! In order for your baby to develop normally, it has two basic needs: One is proper nutrition and the other is a normally operating nervous system.

Let’s cover nutrition first.

At the risk of insulting my readers, some people operate under the impression that as long as they are not hungry, they eat well. Not true! As a mom, you must be aware of the fact that everything you eat and drink affects yourbaby. Everything! Generally the baby will take from the mother whatever it needs in terms of nutrition and I have met many mothers in my practice who are literally undernourished as a result. As a mom, you must rememberthat you are eating for two. Simply “filling up” is not the answer. Your baby has very specific needs as it is growing and developing. Its rate of growth is seven times faster than its three-year-old brother. Much like feeding a babyelephant some may say!

The baby will take as much as it can from mom so it is important that mother provides proper fuel for all that rapid growth. So the following are essential for normal development of your baby:

1. Iron. Mom requires at least 800 mg daily. This is crucial for the development of red blood cells in your baby and is contained in most dark leafy veggies. If you must, you can obtain a liquidiron supplement from a health food store. The nicest way of getting iron is from a tablespoon of dark molasses in a glass of milk three times a day. What a way to treat your baby! Taking VitaminC will help in the absorption of Iron from your digestive tract.

2. Folic Acid. This is very important in the normal development of the nervous system and cannot be omitted. You are lucky though, Folic Acid is contained in most foods which contain ironso it’s a cinch to get. If you really want to get fancy, Oysters are loaded with Folic Acid. They are also a known aphrodisiac and that may be why you are reading this, but that is another topic!

3. Calcium. Our friend! Mom and baby need at least 1200 mg daily. Broccoli is the best source of calcium or you may try raw almonds if you are not into broccoli. Vitamin D helps in theabsorption of Calcium from the digestive tract. This can be tricky because Vitamin D can also cause nausea and “morning sickness”. I found that the easiest way of getting Vitamin D is froma careful suntan; whether it be outside or in a reputable tanning salon. If you do decide to use the “electric beach”, be careful of heat. Babies do not like getting too hot!

I would also like to caution moms on taking Vitamin B6 when pregnant. It tends to reduce the amount of breast milk available for feeding; not a good thing! I’ll continue in two weeks. Seeyou then!

If you would like additional information on this very important subject, please call our office. Ethan Childs, DC

Sixteen-year-old GrandLedge High School studentJayne White spent a goodchunk of time July 12helping the much youngerLainy O’Neal get her lambready for show. Meanwhile,17-year-old Rosalyn Brum-mette, also from GrandLedge, worked up a sweatshearing 12-year-old GabbyWestman’s lamb.

The Future Farmers ofAmerica program is soimportant to Brummettethat she’s dual enrolled inboth Grand Ledge and Char-lotte High Schools andhopes to practice environ-mental or agricultural lawsomeday.

All four girls belong tothe Grand Ledge Golddig-gers 4-H club.

Parents filled thegrandstand near the sheepsection of the fair, applauding their kids’ hardwork as well as theirwillingness to help eachother succeed.

It wasn’t only the 4-Hersdemonstrating responsibil-ity at the fair. Ten-tear-oldMarygrace Merrill of Olivetwas fundraising for a trip

with the Girl Scouts to Chi-cago. A tableful of goodiesshe’d baked herself, as wellas many items crocheted byher mom was waiting forcustomers. Merrill’s goal isa lofty one - the Chicagotrip will cost $400.

Fairgoers feasted ondeep fried veggies and bolo-gna sandwiches , funnelcakes, turkey legs and hotdogs. They rode theDodge-Em cars, soaredover the midway on theferris wheel and turnedthemselves upside down on

the Zipper.Reaching the red button

at the top of the LoonieLadder meant a giantstuffed animal prize andthere were many persistenttakers, including 9-year-old Matthew Peterson ofOlivet.

By midweek, the crowdof fairgoers was up fromlast year, according to BettyParish, fair office secretary, who said she expected thefinal count would be about28,000 people when it con-cludes on July 16.

EAST LANSING, MI | HOW MANY

FRIENDS HAVE TOLD YOU THEY LOVE

THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how manyhave said their hearing aids makesome sounds too loud, don’t workwell in noise, or they can’t tell if theyare really helping them hear at all?Audiologists and dispensers try tomake hearing aids function the bestthey can to give the patient a goodoutcome. But there were always a lotof diWculties surrounding comfortand understanding of speech.

Let’s say you havea small child,an average sizedwoman, and a verylarge man, all withthe same hearingloss. All hearingaids would beprogrammed the

same way, according to the hearingaid manufacturers software. But theear canals themselves must Zgureinto the process, as well. Withoutdiving into too much physics, earcanal size and shape for the childwould be quite small. \e womanwould be close to the average sizeear canals and the man’s ear canalswould be quite large and long. \echild would receive too much powerfrom the hearing aids, the woman’sZtting would be close, and the man’shearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers basetheir science o[ the average ear. Butno one has the average ear.Live speech mapping is the latestinnovative approach to hearing aidZtting which uses natural speech toshow how e[ective digital hearing

aids are in helping you to hearspeech. With digital speech mapping,an actual speech signal, not tones orhissing sounds, is used to test thehearing aids while inserted in thepatient’s ears.\is allows for the shapeand size of the patient’s ear canals to beincluded in the Ztting process, as wellas using the most important signal wehear, speech. For hearing aid Zttingsto be successful, speech must beappropriately ampliZed with respectto loudness, clarity, and comfort.Soft speech should be perceived assoft, moderate speech sounds shouldbe perceived as moderate, and loudspeech sounds should not reach thepatient’s discomfort level.Speech mapping helps to provide

a clear “visual” sense of the hearingloss, and the beneZts or perhaps thelimitations that your current hearingaids o[er in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tinyprobe microphone is inserted intothe ear canal while the hearing aidsare running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the outputand shows if the hearing aids areamplifying sounds appropriately. \eLive Speech Map is displayed on amonitor through easily-understoodgraphics so that you can actuallysee sounds that are missing and bepresented with a clear visual senseof hearing loss and aided beneZtsrelating to actual speech. It allowsyou to see graphically just how theaid is performing in a live, real worldenvironment.Once we see what sounds you’re

missing, we’ll be able to tune yourpersonal hearing aids until it restoresthe missing speech patterns andtones.
