about the Outreach StrategyDont Walk By is an annual homeless outreach
campaign that seeks to mobilize regular NewYorkers in a search and rescue mission to offer
every homeless man and woman an alternave to
life on the streets. The Rescue Alliance NYC is a
partnership of faith-based organizaons that
work together to plan and produce the outreach,
including The Bowery Mission, The Relief Bus,
Street LIFE Ministries, Hope for New York, New York City Rescue Mission and
Betel of America.
In February 2012, an army of over 1,400 volunteers walked every block andsubway plaorm in Manhaan. Each homeless person they met was invited
to return to the anchor church for a hot meal, clothing distribuon, basic
medical care, and assessment for shelter that night. But most importantly,
the Dont Walk Bycampaign gave the homeless an invitaon to start fresh
through rehabilitaon programs such as The Bowery Mission and Betel of
America. These organizaons offer a residenal recovery program with a
Chrisan discipleship curriculum composed of individual counseling, job
training and educaonal beerment.
In its 4th year, Dont Walk Bywitnessed a record high in assessments for thehomeless guests we hosted each week. Thanks to the bigger than ever medi-
cal team and dedicated resource team, 177 men and women were given
one-on-one aenon and care, and 105 were transported to a bed.
The Dont Walk Bystrategy is based on the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Jesus commands us to be be merciful. As we meet the praccal needs duringthe outreach, our greater goal is to show mercy to the homeless men and
women on the streets.
Our volunteers hit the streets and subway to seek out the needy. They get toknow them, offering them a care kit and resource card. The volunteers ask
their new friend if they would like to go back to the anchor church. Outreach
vans circle the area to pick them up and bring them to the church. When the
homeless guests arrive, there is a hot meal and an assessment team waing
for them. They are engaged further by volunteers who spend me in conver-
saon and somemes prayer around a table with them.
The homeless guest is also given the opportunity to be assessed by a repre-
sentave from one of the partner organizaons, where they can decide if
they want to go to a safe shelter for the night. By pouring love and care into
these peoples lives, we hope to see them transformed through entry into a
program that will give them a second chance and change their lives forever.
