FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Who is the person who is defined as the “thief,” the “stranger”? Jesus is thinking in the first place of the false prophets and the pseudo-messiahs of his time who posed as emissaries of God and liberators of the people, but who in reality did nothing but send the people to die for them. Today these “strangers” who do not enter in through the gate, but who sneak into the sheepfold, who “steal” the sheep and “kill” them, are fanatic visionaries, or astute profiteers, who speculate on the good faith and naivety of the people. I am referring to the founders and leaders of the religious sects that are springing up around the world.

When we speak of sects, we must be careful not to put everything on the same level. Protestant evangelicals and Pentecostals, for example, apart from isolated groups, are not sects. For years the Catholic Church has maintained an official dialogue with them, something that it would never do with sects. The true sects can be recognized by certain characteristics. First of all, in regard to their creed, they do not share essential points with the Christian faith, such as the divinity of Christ and the Trinity; or rather they mix foreign and incompatible elements with Christian doctrines — re-incarnation, for example. In regard to methods, they are literally “sheep stealers” in the sense that they try to take the faithful away from their Church of origin, to make them followers of their sect.

They are also often aggressive and polemical. They invariably spend more time accusing and criticizing the Church, Mary and, in general, everything Catholic, rather than proposing their own positive ideas. They are the antipodes of the Gospel of Jesus, which is love, sweetness, respect for the freedom of others. Gospel love is absent from the sects. Jesus has given us a sure criterion for recognizing them: “Beware,” he said, “of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but who underneath are rapacious wolves. By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:16). And the most common fruits of sects are divided families, fanaticism, and apocalyptic expectations of the end of the world, which are regularly contradicted by the facts.

There is another kind of religious sect, born outside the Christian world, generally imported from the East. Unlike those we have been talking about, they are not aggressive. Indeed, they present themselves “in the clothing of lambs,” preaching love for all, for nature, the quest for the deep self. They are often syncretistic ensembles, that is, they weave together elements from various religions, as is the case with the New Age.

The great spiritual damage that is caused to those who allow themselves to be convinced by these new messiahs is that they lose Jesus Christ, and with him that “life in abundance” that he came to bring. Some of these sects are also dangerous for mental health and public order. The recurrent cases of subjugation and group suicides show us where the fanaticism of some sect leaders can carry people. When we speak about sects, we must also say a “mea culpa.” People often end up in sects in search of the human warmth and support of a community that they did not find in their parish.

¿Quién es la persona que se define como el "ladrón", el "extraño"? Jesús está pensando en primer lugar en los falsos profetas y los pseudomesias de su tiempo que se hicieron pasar por emisarios de Dios y liberadores del pueblo, pero que en realidad no hicieron más que enviar al pueblo a morir por ellos. – sectas son las familias divididas, el fanatismo y las expectativas apocalípticas del fin del mundo, que regularmente se contradicen con los hechos.

Hay otro tipo de secta religiosa, nacida fuera del mundo cristiano, generalmente importada de Oriente. A diferencia de aquellos de los que hemos estado hablando, no son agresivos. De hecho, se presentan "con la ropa de corderos", predicando el amor por todos, por la naturaleza, la búsqueda del yo profundo. A menudo son conjuntos sincretistas, es decir, entrelacen elementos de diversas religiones, como es el caso de la Nueva Era.

you sing of the Father’s mercy and accompany us with a mother’s love. In this time of pandemic we come to you, our sign of sure hope and comfort. Today we renew the act of consecration and entrust-ment carried out by those who have gone before us. With the love of a Mother and Handmaid, embrace us as we renew our consecration to you, together with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In a special way we commend to you those particularly in need of your maternal care. Mary, Health of the Sick, sign of health, of healing, and of divine hope for the sick, we entrust to you all who are infected with the coronavirus. Mary, Mother of Consolation, who console with a mother’s love all who turn to you, we entrust to you all those who have lost loved ones in the pandemic. Mary, Help of Christians, who come to our rescue in every trial, we entrust to your loving protection all caregivers. Mary, Queen and Mother of Mercy, who embrace all those who call upon your help in their distress, we entrust to you all who are suffering in any way from the pandemic. DOMINIC SAVIO Feast Day: May 6 / Canonized: June 12, 1954

It isn’t always easy to be different from others, but Dominic, who was born in 1842, was different. Even as a young boy, he had great faith. His parents taught him how important it was for him to put Jesus first in his life. They had one other goal for Dominic. They wanted him to learn to read and write, something they could not do. They could not afford to send Dominic to boarding school, and there were no public schools in his small Italian village of San Giovanni di Riva. Dominic spent his days on the streets. It did not look like he would have a good future. A priest named Father John Bosco devoted his life to educating poor boys. He helped them to learn trades so that they could earn a living when they grew up. When Father Bosco met Dominic, he was impressed by Dominic’s faith and his eagerness to learn. Father Bosco invited Dominic to attend the school he had recently founded. It would mean moving away from home, but Dominic’s parents gave their permission. It was a wonderful opportunity for their son. Dominic was excited, too. He knew that if he was a good student, he could eventually become a priest and grow even closer to the Lord. Away at school, Dominic became more religious. He made visits to church several times a day. At his First Communion he became determined to go to confession and communion often. Sometimes he skipped meals so that he would have more time to pray. The other students made fun of him. Father Bosco told Dominic that the way to holiness was to be happy and to help others find happiness. Dominic put Father Bosco’s words into action. He became a good friend to all the students and found ways to help them with their studies or chores. He asked Father Bosco to help him become a saint. When Dominic was 14, he became very sick. Today we have medicines to treat the illness Dominic had, but there was nothing that could help him in those days. He died peacefully just before his 15th birthday after receiving the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Father John Bosco, who was later canonized a saint, wrote the story of Dominic’s life. Dominic was named a saint in 1954, almost 100 years after he died. He was the youngest non-martyr to be declared a saint in the Church. Some people thought that he had not lived long enough to be considered for sainthood. But Dominic’s example teaches us that no matter how old we are, we can serve the Lord in small ways every day. Pope Pius XII described St. Dominic Savio as “small in size, but a towering giant in spirit.” He is the patron saint of choirboys and juvenile delinquents.

No podían pagar para enviar a Domingo a un internado, y no había escuelas públicas en su pequeño pueblo italiano de San Giovanni di Riva. Domingo pasó sus días en las calles. No parecía que iba a tener un buen futuro.

Un sacerdote llamado padre Juan Bosco dedicó su vida a la educación de los niños pobres. Él les ayudó a aprender un oficio para que pudieran ganarse la vida cuando crecieran. Cuando Don Bosco conoció a Domingo, lo impresionó la fe de Domingo y su entusiasmo aprender.

Don Bosco invitó a Domingo a asistir a la escuela que él había fundado recientemente. Esto significaría mudarse de casa, pero los padres de Domingo le dieron permiso. ¡Era una gran oportunidad para su hijo! Domingo estaba entusiasmado, también. Los otros estudiantes se burlaban de él. Don Bosco le dijo a Domingo que el camino hacia la santidad era ser feliz y ayudar a otros a encontrar la felicidad. Domingo puso las palabras de Don Bosco en acción. Se convirtió en un buen amigo para todos los estu-diantes y encontró la manera de ayudarles con sus estudios o tareas. Le pidió a Don Bosco que le ayudara a convertirse en santo.

Cuando Domingo tenía 14 años, se puso muy enfermo. Hoy tenemos medicamentos para tratar la enfermedad que Domingo tenía, pero no había nada que pudiera ayudarle en aquellos días. Murió en paz justo antes de cumplir 15 años después de recibir el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos.

El padre Juan Bosco, quien más tarde fue canonizado, escribió la historia de la vida de Domingo. Domingo fue nombrado santo en 1954, casi 100 años después de su muerte. Fue el más joven no mártir en ser declarado santo en la Iglesia. Algunas personas pensaron que no había vivido lo suficiente para ser considerado para la canonización. Pero el ejemplo de Domingo nos enseña que no importa la edad que tengamos, podemos servir al Señor en pequeñas cosas todos los días.
