  • Du Shomoy: Synopsis

Buddhadeb Bhattacharyas DuShomoy (The Bad Times) deals with the bitter truth prevalent even in todays societythe communal tension between Hindus and Muslims. Against the backdrop of a small town in Bihar, DuShomoy is thestory of Kabeer, a young, brave and idealistic columnist who respects his retired college principal, Shyamadas Mukherjee (Mastermoshai) and is in love with his daughter, Kanika. As a devoted disciple of Shyamadas, Kabeer does not hesitate to fulfill his teachers request to meet him even in the midst of communal disorder. On his way to his teachers place Kabeer encounters a deadly situation where innocent people are mercilessly pursued, tortured and killed by the opposing communal group. Shyamadas and his daughter are fully aware that their own lives could be at stake in the fiery situation where their Hindu neighbors, even remotely acquainted with any Muslim are inhumanly treated. Still, Mastermoshai and Kanika provide shelter to Kabeer in their own household. The father and daughter, unlike Durga (Shyamadas wife) possess immense moral courage and their affection for Kabeer rise above all petty, mundane concerns. Kabeer realizes that his presence poses a potential threat to the Hindu family and he

  • leaves them without their knowledge. Deeply concerned for Kabeer, both Shyamadas and Kanika frantically look for him. Kanika finally finds Kabeer and expresses her unconditional love for hima love that is ready to conquer all barriers of religion and communalism. It is a love that gives her a resilience of spirit in the face of even the most lethal danger and raging violence. Kabeer is also deeply in love with Kanika, but he is torn between his love and the stark reality of the times. And thwarting this gruesome reality is simply a mazean intriguing paradox. For, the hard truth is that, Kabeer and Kanika will have to lose each other forever either by consciously drifting apart or by suffering separation at the hands of an inhuman civilization. The final message comes when Kabeer and Kanika join hands and emerge as symbolic manifestations of the triumph of human love overpowering mean impulses such as, antagonism between different communities. The comic relief in Buddhadeb Bhattacharyas play is provided by the scenes where the administrative officials converse and reveal the insensitive and corrupt political fabric informing the world of DuShomoy.

The play teases us with a fundamental irony underlying the human civilization: the more we call ourselves modern and civilized, the less we tend to be

  • one with the rest of humanity. Communal disharmony only infects us with anger and crueltyprecisely the elements that take us back to the primitive, savage ages of mankind!
