Introduction
Hello,
This is the Dutch part of the traditional instruments-project. We liked to do this, but, we
have to say that is was pretty difficult to find traditional instruments of our country. We had
found some, though.
We've found: the carillon, (Dutch word: Beiaard) draaiorgel and the fanfare. We're going to
tell you something about these instruments and how they work. We hope you enjoy it, and
Maybe you'll know them already. We want to say thanks to our music teacher, and to
Everyone who helped us with this project.
Have fun!
Greets from Holland!
Draaiorgel
• It’s officially an Italian instrument, but if
you walk in Holland you definitely will see
one.
How the draaiorgel works
In a draaiorgel you put a book with holes.
When you turn the wheel of the draaiorgel
there comes air in the tubes in the draaiorgel.
All the time you get different holes, so
different flutes with different tones get
air. And then finally you get
A song.
Beiaard
• The beiaard you mostly see at churches. You hear it
often if you walk in Holland.
• A beiaard consists of a lot of bells (min. 23) that the
beiaardier (someone who plays the carrilon) can play.
• The Domtoren in Utrecht also has got a beiaard, it’s very
famous.

Fanfare
The fanfare is a group of instruments that are played while walking. The fanfare
plays old Dutch songs like Het Wilhelmus and Oh, kom er eens kijken.
The last one is only played at the Dutch festivity sinterklaas. The fanfare
includes: Drum, trumpet, sax, and more. Nice to know is that the drums
officially comes from the fanfare, because the drums is more compact; you can
play all the different drums for just one person. The fanfare is something
typically Dutch, you can see it at almost every festivity!
The end
As you could see Holland isn’t a country that
Invents things by itself. It’s more a import
country that import things from other
countries.
I hope you enjoyed it!
