SONIC START®

STREAMLINE™

Significantly less maintenance. Smith & Loveless now offers the most advanced prime sensing technology on the market today with the SONIC START® STREAMLINE™. The SONIC START® Probe uses frequency differential to determine whether the pump is primed. Even better, the SONIC START® Probe is virtually maintenance free.

The SONIC START® STREAMLINE™ relocates the prime sensing probe to lower in the motor adapter and then places the solenoid valve directly on top of the vacuum dome. This powerful combination stops liquid and debris inside the vacuum dome.

Because of the immediate solenoid valve closure right on top of the dome, debris and liquid do not go beyond the vacuum dome. This eliminates routine cleaning of the solenoid valve and extends the already long life of the solenoid valves and vacuum pumps.

The SONIC START® STREAMLINE™ offers the best in state-of-the-art prime sensing technology and provides customers with the most virtually maintenance free and longest lifecycle pump station product line in the marketplace today.

What’s one difference between electrodes and the SONIC START® STREAMLINE™?

Relocation of the solenoid valve. The SONIC START® STREAMLINE™ relocates the 2-Way solenoid valve to on top of the vacuum dome, taking the sewage pump pressure off of the vacuum tubing and fittings. This stops liquid and debris from going beyond the vacuum dome and eliminates routine cleaning of the solenoid valve, and the vapor filter.

The new solenoid valve reduces routine maintenance and can reduce priming time by up to 40%. The new SONIC START® STREAMLINE™ for pump stations comes standard with the 5/16” diameter 2-Way solenoid valve. If you’re not quite ready to upgrade from electrode to the SONIC START® STREAMLINE™, then consider at least upgrading to the larger ported 2-Way solenoid valve.

“What’s the difference?” you ask between this new combination air/vacuum gauge and the older style gauge? The new combination air/vacuum gauge has the diaphragm already built-in, versus being sold separately with the old style gauge. All of the new gauges shown below only come glycerin filled.

So, what is included in this maintenance? • Clean the solenoid twice a year. • Verify that all vacuum pumps pull 22-24 Hg. • Lubricate the motor annually (remember over

greasing can cause severe damage).• Inspect or replace all vacuum lines.• Inspect and clean all fittings.• Verify the wet well is clean. • Inspect the motor adapter for any sign of

mechanical seal leakage, replace if necessary. Also, twice a year, remove the vacuum line

from the electrode dome/priming dome. • Note the length of time it takes each pump to prime. Periodically check this against your recorded numbers.• Install gauges on all pumps.

Smith & Loveless now offers a complete set of glycerin gauges with an internal diaphragm. These quality compact gauges can be sized by Smith & Loveless for every station.

If you put the annual 6 hours of maintenance in your schedule, these stations require very little and you’re sure to have trouble-free station operation. Just last week, we had a customer come in for an electrode housing and he said he had not done a thing to the station since 2001. While we do not recommend this, it just goes to show how durable Smith & Loveless pump stations are.

Maintenance of equipment is the secret of longevity. We at Smith & Loveless firmly believe that if you give a WWMPS 6 hours of maintenance a year, you will have very few problems, if any.

When should you repair a check valve versus replace it? Smith & Loveless’ Customer Service Team notes most customers rebuild a wafer check valve when the check valve is in need of: Pin, Shaft, O-Rings, Clapper & Arm.

When it comes to seat problems, with the wafer check valve, evaluate the age of check valve.

If your wafer check valve is the newest design with the dove tail grove for the O-Ring seat, most customers will change the seat through repair.

However, if you have an older style check valve where the seat is glued in place, it’s time to replace the check valve. Typically customers permanently damage the seat when trying to remove the glued in O-Ring.

If repair time is a concern, many operators keep a spare wafer check valve on hand to install and then take the check valve they just removed back to the shop to rebuild it.

No matter whether you decide to repair, rebuild or install an all new wafer check valve, your Smith & Loveless Representative or the Smith & Loveless Parts Department can assist you with the parts you’ll need.S

Continuous Hinge/Backing Bar Kit

The 49” Kit includes: a 49” backing bar, two continuous hinges, mounting hardware and step-by-step 3-D illustrated installation instructions.

On all Smith & Loveless Duplex Wet Well Mounted Pump Stations, there is a CW and CCW pump. The pump draws the wastewater up from the wet well and into the volute that houses the impeller. The pump then discharges the wastewater out of the volute. This can be seen in fig. 3 by following the arrows. By looking at the directional flow of the wastewater through the pump, the rotation can be determined.

In the diagram, the flow is pulled into the pump from the wet well that is located directly under the pump. The pump on the left in this diagram is the CW (Clockwise) rotation. The pump on the right in this diagram is the CCW (Counter-Clockwise) rotation. The flow always circulates around the volute first and then out through the volute discharge. Whatever rotation this flow path is will determine whether the impeller and pump are CW or CCW in rotation.

Determining impeller rotation is one of the most common questions customers ask. If you have the impeller already removed, the first thing is to make sure the “motor end” with keyway is up and the larger opening “suction end” is down.

If you haven’t removed the pump yet, you can still determine the rotation of the pump and impeller by looking at the equipment and how the wastewater flows through the pump.

Then looking down on the impeller with the “motor end” up, determine which way the vanes curve. The first drawing shows a CW (Clockwise) rotation. The second drawing shows a CCW (Counter-Clockwise) rotation.

The Phase Monitor PN: 4L336A and PN: 4L336B is one of the cheapest insurance policies you can have for your pump station. The Phase Monitor will shut down your pump station and send an alarm if incoming phase variances hit the pump station. The Phase Monitor protects your pump station if:

1. A phase is lost.

2. A phase is reversed.

3. Voltage drops causing brown outs, resulting in control panel and motor damage. While some amount of wiring is required to connect to your pump station’s alarms, installing the Phase Monitor is simple for a qualified electrician to perform.

Pump clogs caused by “flushable” consumer products are a thing of the past at this residential pump station following installation of the X-PELLEr® Impeller.

The underground pump station, installed in 1973 at the Meadowbrook Village mobile home park in Salt Lake City, Utah, featured 4” pumps designed for flows of 125 GPM at 20’ TDH. An abundance of swifters and wet wipes began to cause clogging approximately twice a month.

This annoying problem was also a costly one as well. Every time the pumps clogged, two service employees had to be sent to perform maintenance on the station. Many times this was in the middle of the night, requiring overtime.

After consulting with a local S&L representative in July 2012, the station’s pumps were retrofitted with proprietary X-PELLEr® Impellers featuring a clog resistant design. Because of the vertical construction of the S&L Pumps, impeller changeout was quick and easy.

Key to the X-PELLEr®’s success is its mono-port design, which creates a single flow path through the impeller and negates the common buildup of fibrous material from today’s flushables in multi-vane pump impellers.

Since installation of the X-PELLEr® more than a year ago, the mobile home park has been more than pleased with the results. Pump clogs have been eliminated, saving time and money.

The anode Test Box

The Smith & Loveless anode Test Box was designed to monitor the current flow in each Sacrificial Anode surrounding the buried pump station. The amount of current flowing in the anodes depends on the bare steel of the structure, plus any bare steel such as the connecting piping. The flow of current is also effected by the electrical ground at the service pole.

The S&L Anode Test Box provides a single measuring point to monitor the current flow and subsequent amount of anode migration. S&L’s Anode Test Box works well with not only Smith & Loveless equipment, but also on all underground steel structures such as water booster pump stations, valve vaults, and pump stations. This sacrificial anode pack is used for corrosion protection on all buried pump stations and Recessed Wet Well Mounted Pump Stations, along with any wastewater treatment plant or water treatment plant buried in the ground. The sacrificial anode extends the life of the exposed metal by slowing the corrosion process.

Underground Pump Station Monitoring PanelPut Monitoring At Grade and Reduce Times Required to Enter the Underground Pump Station

Reduce the number of times you need to enter the underground pump station by locating a Smith & Loveless Monitoring Panel at grade. Then you only have to enter the pump station once a month to exercise the valves.

Typically included in the Smith & Loveless Monitoring Panel is the Hand/Off/Auto controls so that you can bump the motors and pumps to make sure things are pumping well, running time meters, Pump Failure Alarm, and Station Flooding Alarm. Some customers also move all of the controls to at grade and keep an

emergency E-Stop panel down in the underground pump station for emergency pump stops. With the PumpLogix™ PX2 controller at grade and by switching from bubblers to submersible pressure transducers in the wet well level, pump alternation, and wet well level simulation can all be run from at grade. Locating the Underground Pump Station Monitoring Panel, by Smith & Loveless, at grade will help reduce the number of times an operator needs to enter the underground pump station to check on the pump station.

Replacing Volute Gaskets

When taking apart your rotating assembly, note how many volute gaskets you remove. You will need to reinstall the same number and thickness to prevent rubbing during pump operation. Before turning your pump back to full operation, bump the motor to see if you hear any rubbing and to check for correct motor rotation. If there is rubbing, you will need to add more volute gaskets. If the rotation is incorrect, rewire it for correct rotation. See page 10 to determine which gasket is required for your pump.

In 1996, the Smith & Loveless Seal Filter for non-clog flooded suction pumps was changed to PN: 1L485 (seen right) in order to provide a larger filtration volume than the previous version PN: 1L371. The seal filter element surface area jumped from 1 square inch (1L371) to 6 square inches of filter area. This greatly lengthens the time between the need to clean or change out the seal water filter element. The PN: 1L485 Seal Filter is used on all of Smith & Loveless’ Flooded Suction Pumps found on the following types of equipment: the remoted mounted PISTA® Turbo Grit Pump, and the product line of Smith & Loveless Underground Pump Stations. The Smith & Loveless Factory-Bui l t MON-O-JECT® and DU-O-JECT ® Pneumat ic Ejector Sewage Lift Stations were built-to-last. Starting with its first installations in 1946, there are still thousands of these lift stations installed and operational all across North America, so here is a little bit more information on this 60+ year old, built-to-last product.

How it Works:Both the MON-O-JECT® and DU-O-JECT® work the same, with the major difference is that on the MON-O-JECT® there is only one influent waste receiver chamber and on the D U - O - J E C T ® t h e r e a r e two influent waste receiver chambers. Capacities are 30 to 200 gpm. Sewage flows by gravity from the sewer line, through the inlet gate valves, the inlet check valves and into the sewage receivers. Air displaced by the sewage is vented through separate hollow electrode-air pipes from each receiver, through the corresponding three-way air valve and out the air vent.

Ejector Basics

DU-O-JECT®The DU-O-JECT® features 4 chambers: the top compart-ment - Chamber 1 - is accessible from ground level and houses the control panel and compressors. Chamber 2 - the middle compartment - houses the dual valve and manifold system and serves as an air storage tank. The two lowest - twin side-by-side Chambers 3 & 4 are influent waste receivers.

MON-O-JECT®The MON-O-JECT® features 3 chambers: the top chamber is accessible from ground level and houses the control panel and compressor. The middle chamber houses the valves, manifold and serves as an air-storage tank. The bottom and lowest section is the influent waste receiver.

is completed from the electrode, through the liquid, to the ground at the receiver wall, energizing a DC relay which activates the three-way air valve, cutting off the vent connection and connecting the sewage receiver to air stored under pressure in the middle section of the station. High pressure air passes through the three-way air valve, through the hollow electrode air pipe, and into the sewage receiver. The pressure forces the sewage back up the inlet pipe, through the discharge check valve and gate valve, through the common discharge pipe into the force main.

An adjustable, electrical “No-Fail” timer, energized by the DC relay, keeps the three-way air valve energized for a predetermined period of time while the sewage is ejected from the receiver. When the time cycle is completed, it releases the interlocks that prevent both receivers from ejecting at the same time, reverses the three-

way air valve which returns to its original position, cutting off the high pressure air supply and connects the receiver to the vent line. The interlocks provide automatic alternation.S

Ejector Electrode System

The exclusive “No-Fail” Electrode System is Standard Equipment on the DU-O-JECT ® and MON-O-JECT® Ejector Sewage Lift Station. The unique Smith & Loveless “No-Fail” electrode system utilizing large, hollow stainless steel electrodes (with greatly increased surface area) eliminates most failures due to nonconductive sewage deposits on the electrodes; and only the Smith & Loveless “No-Fail” electrode system can prevent grounding failures which put other ejectors out of operation.

The system is composed of heavy-duty rectifiers that change alternating current to direct current, a sensitive direct current relay, a high-accuracy timing unit and a hollow electrode.

Should an electrode ever become grounded during the ejection cycle, one of the continuously lit “No-Fail” lights on the control panel indicates (by dimming the grounded receiver) that the unit is operating under failure conditions. At the end of the

ejection, the “No Fail” timer breaks the relay circuit, returning the three-way air valve to its original position, cutting off the high-pressure air supply a n d c o n n e c t i n g the receiver to the vent line. The other rece ive r i s t hen permitted to operate when the liquid level comes in contact with the electrode in that receiver.

Frequently, the rush of air in the ejection cycle will flush any grounding material off the electrode and remove the failure condition. When this happens, the electrode system will return to normal operation automatically.

Should the electrode remain grounded, the unit will perform an ejection cycle immediately following the ejection cycle of the operative unit whether or not the receiver is full of sewage. If the electrodes in both receivers become grounded, the DU-O-JECT® will operate in alternating cycles, providing continuous service until the operator can return the ejector to normal service.

Pump Failure Sensor Kit Includes Everything For A 2-Pump Station - Above Or Below Grade

The Smith & Loveless Pump Failure Sensor works with any check valve arm that is 1/2” wide x 1-1/2” tall or smaller. Wafer Check Valves, Full Body Check Valves, any valve with a check valve arm that meets the above dimensions can use this sensor.

Even the smallest check valve deflection is sensed, because the Smith & Loveless Pump Failure Sensor detects even minimal movement. For more information on the Pump Failure Sensor Retrofit Kits, contact Smith & Loveless or your local Representative.

The Pump Failure Sensor fully rotates 360 degrees in relation to the check valve arm sensor attachment bracket, so that it can detect deflection of the check valve no matter what angle the check valve was installed — vertical, horizontal or somewhere in between.
