PhD Research Visits
International students pursuing PhD degrees at other universities are welcome to conduct research and study visits at the University of Tartu for a period of 1-10 months in any of the accredited PhD programmes regardless of speciality.Short-term research grantsGrants are made available by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science to cover study/research visits for a period of 1-10 months.
Eligibility requirements1. The candidate must reside in a country other than Estonia and be enrolled in a doctoral
programme at an accredited university in his/her country.2. The candidate must not be enrolled as a student at a university in Estonia at the time of
application.3. The candidate must resume studies in the home country at the end of the grant period.
Application processYou should start from finding a supervisor at the UT, as the main responsibility regarding your research period and the application for funding lies with your UT supervisor. If you already have contacts at the respective institute/department, contact them to introduce your research topic and discuss supervision. You can also have a look at guidelines on finding a supervisor.Once you have found a supervisor at the UT, contact Merike Kala ([email protected]) for further information on the application process and the required documents.Application deadlineAs the quota allocated to the UT in the academic year 2013/2014 is limited, applications are no longer reviewed each month. The current application deadline is 31 October 2013 (for research periods starting in the 1st half of 2014). The next one will most probably be in May 2014.
Grant coverageThe grants will be issued to the host university, including: a monthly grant (ca. 400 EUR/month) for the duration of the research visit; a travel grant for one return trip from the student’s home country to Estonia; a grant to cover the cost of the health insurance for the period of research visit in Estonia; and the fee payable for the residence permit application. The student will receive a supplementary relocation allowance for the duration of student's stay at the university (for rental and additional travel costs).

The Swedish Institute Visby Programme: scholarships for PhD studies and postdoctoral research in SwedenThe aim of the Visby Programme is to build an integrated, knowledge-based and research-intense region, centered on the
Baltic Sea, but also bridging to the Eastern Partnership countries and the Russian Federation. CountriesThe program is targeted at candidates from the following countries: Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. Its main objective is to strengthen cooperation and network building between those countries and Sweden in the fields of higher education and research.
Target groupsThe program provides PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with an opportunity to conduct research at Swedish universities within all fields of study.
PhD studies – two different models of applying. The first model consists of PhD students/candidates applying for one long-term visit (either 6, 9 or 12 months) as part of their PhD studies. The second model consists of candidates applying for a scholarship according to the sandwich model (several shorter visits). The scholarship period for candidates on a sandwich set-up is a maximum 12 months over three years, divided into a maximum of two research visits per year.
Postdoctoral research - individuals applying for a postdoctoral research long-term visit (6, 9 or 12 months) must be holders of a PhD degree, preferably from 2009 or later.
Senior scientists – holders of a PhD degree but who do not fit into the category of postdoctoral researchers, above, invited to Sweden for research (6 months maximum).
Scholarship benefitsThe scholarship amounts to SEK 15,000 per month for PhD students andSEK 18,000 per month for postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists. The scholarship cannot be prolonged or extended.
SI Network for Future Global LeadersAll Swedish Institute scholarship holders are invited to become members of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders – a network that offers unique opportunities during and after the stay in Sweden. Together with other talented people from all around the world, the scholarship holder is able to take part in a variety of events, exchange ideas and create networks that benefit both to career and personal development.
Who is eligible?The scholarships are intended for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists belonging to any of the above-mentioned target groups for full-time PhD studies/research in Sweden. A scholarship cannot be granted for an applicant who:
Has already lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship period is due to begin. Has already a Swedish permanent residence permit. Has a Swedish work permit and is not an EU citizen. Is applying for a scholarship at PhD level but is not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies at a home
University. Is applying for a scholarship at Postdoctoral level, but does not hold any PhD degree.
Applicants previously awarded a scholarship from SI for study or research at a Swedish university will not be given priority.
Selection criteria and areas of priorityApplications are evaluated by the Swedish Institute and an academic board. The primary evaluation of the application takes into account the applicant’s academic background and personal motivation, research quality and expertise in the project field of the host department, and the strength of the research proposal with regard to its scientific quality, originality, methodological approach, and relevance. In the final selection of candidates SI will also consider factors like distribution on academic fields and between universities, study level, purpose of study, nationality and gender.
For the academic year 2014/2015 priority will be given to research projects that correspond to any of the following, overall thematic areas:
An ecologically sustainable region (research focusing on the environment and sustainable development)
Sustainable growth for increased prosperity (pertains to research projects related to business, innovation, regional development, or tourism)
Challenges of the region (social issues, public health, and civil society)
The application should clearly state how your research project can contribute to development in the Baltic Sea Region in line with the above-mentioned strategies.
InsuranceScholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period. For citizens of EU member states and other Convention countries the insurance applies with certain limitations.
Scholarship limitations
The scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. No funding for bench fees is provided.
The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended; however it is possible to apply for subsequent funding through a new call for applications.
PhD students on a sandwich setup are allowed up to two visits per scholarship year. In case of a postponed arrival date, the scholarship period can be decreased accordingly.

Sandwich PhD candidates and the Sandwhich FellowshipSandwich PhD candidates are international PhD candidates who only spend part of their time at Wageningen University.

ProgrammeAs a sandwich PhD candidate you will spend the first six to eight months of your degree at
Wageningen University. During this time you will expand your research proposal and follow
a tailor-made education and training programme.
The next three years are spent conducting research in your home country under the
supervision of a local supervisor. You will have regular contact with your supervisor in
Wageningen via email. Sandwich PhD candidates often return to Wageningen for short visits,
and a Wageningen University supervisor will sometimes visit the student’s home institute.
After you have finished collecting all your data, you return to Wageningen to finish the PhD
thesis, which should take you approximately six months. After your thesis defense, your
local supervisor will come to Wageningen to act as co-promoter at your graduation
ceremony.
ApplicationTo apply for a sandwich PhD position, you can follow the steps outlined on
the Application form. If you wish to apply for a sandwich PhD position, you will need to
provide proof of commitment from your home institute in addition to the other
documentation. Please bear in mind that the number of applications for sandwich PhD
positions greatly exceed the number of available places. Only the best candidates with the
most original and innovative research proposals will be selected.
Wageningen University Sandwich Fellowship

Each year Wageningen University has fellowships available for sandwich PhD candidates.
The fellowship consists, amongst other things, of a budget of around € 56.000. This covers
eighteen months of stay in Wageningen, insurance and reimbursements for travel costs of
student and supervisors. Additionally, Wageningen University will provide supervision, edu-
cation and training, and a waiver for the university fee. The Wageningen University
Sandwich Fellowship only covers the eighteen months a candidate spends in the
Netherlands. Due to tax regulations sandwich PhD candidates funded by the WU sandwich
PhD program are offered a PhD contract with a maximum length of 2 x 9 months..

The education budget and the costs for printing the thesis are not included in the sandwich
budget. The department at which candidates conduct their research will compensate these
costs.
Fellowship application
A supervising professor at Wageningen University is the only person who can start the
application procedure for a Sandwich Fellowship. You will need to be admitted to the
sandwich PhD programme before an application for the fellowship can be sent. A professor
of Wageningen University may only submit one sandwich fellowship candidate per round.
Each round the selection committee will award fellowships to approximately seven
candidates. If you obtain a sandwich PhD fellowship you must be in Wageningen for the first
part of the sandwich fellowship within six months after the fellowship has been awarded. If
not, the fellowship will no longer be available.
The sandwich PhD fellowship is awarded based on a your resume. It is not possible to apply
for a partial fellowship. Institutes can also not change candidates after the selection
procedure has been concluded.
Sometimes sandwich fellowships are used as a stepping stone to pursue more financially
rewarding fellowships elsewhere. If you accept another fellowship, the Sandwich Fellowship
will no longer be available. The recipient research group may not use the remaining funding
to finance the research of another candidate.

Admission requirements
You can only apply for a Sandwich Fellowship if you are a national of one of the countries in
the following regions: Middle and South America, Africa, countries that belong to the former
Soviet Union and that are not an EU-member state and all Asian countries except Japan,
South Korea and Singapore. Dutchmen, including those who hold dual citizenship, will not be
admitted into the sandwich PhD programme.
You will receive priority if you:
Can prove you will be employed at your home institute after completion of your PhD
programme
You have received funding from your home institute
You are an MSc graduate from Wageningen University or if you work on Wageningen
University a project
If you have recently finished an MSc at Wageningen University your application will be
considered, but applicants with working experience at an institute in one of the countries
mentioned above will receive preference. If no clear link between you and your home
institute exists, your application will not be taken into consideration.
Selection criteria
Selection criteria for the fellowship are:

o Quality and infrastructure of the supervising groups
o Written institutional support from the countries concerned
o Quality of the relationship between the home institute and Wageningen University

Special Research Fund - Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing CountriesWith support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University wishes to support university research groups or research centres in developing countries in their aim to grow into excellent research centres by upgrading local academic personnel. Therefore Ghent University grants PhD scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University and half in a university in a developing country.These grants take the form of a so called “sandwich” scholarship: the candidate obtains a scholarship for 24 months to work within a span of 48 months on an alternating basis on the PhD at Ghent University and at the university or research centre in a developing country. Only for the periods the scholarship holder works at Ghent University the scholarship holder will receive a monthly income. The rest of the PhD research is done in the partner university, for which no funding is provided through this scholarship. For this part of the PhD research students must prove that they will be financed at their home university (e.g. local scholarship or salary).No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development. university in a selected developing country. This implies that there must be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center. Also a written statement is requested from that supervisor or the university authorities stating that the candidate is either a student or a staff member of this university and will be sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the PhD research.
This statement should also mention that the candidate receives/received a local scholarship or salary when working on the PhD in the home institute.
How does it work
The candidate applies to Ghent University jointly with a promoter of Ghent University and a supervisor at the local institution.The promoter at Ghent University has to fill in a separate document ('promoter's advice'- only available in Dutch) with advice on the candidate, stating the promoter's opinion on the potential of the candidate as a future researcher.The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation. Studentship Description
The use of high-strength, yet lightweight, materials to reduce weight without compromising
on cost, performance or safety is becoming increasingly common in the civil, mechanical
and defence sectors. Innovative lightweight materials and lightweight construction
technologies are finding applications in transportation, buildings and construction, body
armour and protection systems, mechanical components, sports and leisure goods, and
packaging. This is typically achieved through a reduction in mass of the material used or the
reduction in the weight of the final structure by employing novel design techniques or
combinations of lightweight materials and/or hollow or sandwich structures. The need to
balance reduced material mass with structural integrity (SI), in particular for applications in
harsh environments and/or under extreme loading conditions, poses new and unique sets of
challenges for researchers involved in SI research. The focus of this project will be on
developing advanced lightweight materials and structures technology to enable lightweight
systems to better resist extreme (blast and impact) loadings for applications in ships. The
work would involve theoretical modelling, numerical simulations (finite element), and
applying inverse techniques to optimise microstructure and macroscopic properties of
sandwich construction for spall debris containment.
With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University wishes to support university
research groups or research centres in developing countries in their aim to grow into excellent research
