    Duodenum

    The duodenum, into which the stomach opens, is about 25 cm long, C-shaped andbegins at the pyloric sphincter. It is almost entirely retroperitoneal and is the mostfixed part of the small intestine.

      The duodenum is

    described as having fourparts:

    1. Part one, superior part(SD)

    2. Part two, descendingpart (DD)

    3. Part three, horizontalpart (HD)

    4. part four, ascending

    part (AD)

    The fourth part of theduodenum terminates at theduodenojejunal flexure DJFwith the jejunum.

    The ligament of Treitz  is amusculofibrous band thatextends from the upper

    aspect of the ascending partof the duodenum to theright crus of the diaphragmand tissue around the celiacartery.

    As you can see, the head of the pancreas sits in the C-shaped duodenum, so aslong as we are here, we

    may as well point out thestructures here:

    The other structures in thearea are the:

    Most duodenal ulcers occur within 5 cm of the pylorus and most frequently onthe anterior wall.
