Elephant and bird life of the region.
The wildlife of Central India one of India and the world’s most densely forested regions,

parts of the world. Wildlife in Central India includes the Royal Bengaltiger, the asiatic
leopard, the caracal or desert cat, langur and rhesus monkey, the chital or spotted
deer, nilgai or the blue bull, the sambharstag, and the Gaur or Indian bison. Also
included are adiverse species of birdlife. These wildlife sanctuaries in the heart of India’s
Kipling country offer visitorsan opportunity of discovering the rich and varied flora and fauna of
India’s middle animal kingdom. The famous albino or white tigers also came from Central India.
Bandhavgarh National Park located in Madhya Pradesh is one of the best and most
picturesque tiger reserves of India. Set in the picturesque surroundings of the eastern edge of
the Satpura and Vindhya hill ranges, Bandhavgarh National Park is famous for its Tiger
population. Other significant species include the dhole or wild dog which hunts in packs and
which even the tiger fears, sloth bear, leopard, rhesus macaques, sambar, chital,
chausingha, the 4-horned antelope among others. Bandavgarh is also home to a sizable
population of reptiles and birds.
Kanha National Park is also famous for its Tigers and some of the world’s most renowned
big cat experts have conducted their research work here. It is also home to an endangered
herd of Barasinghas or Swamp Deer
Thus, the wildlife sanctuaries of Central India offer various exploring opportunities including
wildlife tours and expedition giving a rewarding experience to all the wildlife enthusiasts.
Kanha National Park and Tiger Reserve is the largest protected area in central India. Tracts of
Kanha have been a wildlife sanctuary since 1933. In 1955, 318 sq km was declared a National
Park and in 1973, 940 sq kms became one of India’s original nine Project Tiger Reserves. Kanha
was expanded in 1976 - the National Park now has a core area of 940 sq km and a buffer zone of
1,009 sq km.
Kanha is situated in the Maikal hills, in the Satpura range of the central Indian highlands, in the
State of Madhya Pradesh (22° 17'N, 80° 38'E). The land rises from 450 to 950 metres above sea
level, and is drained by tributaries of the Narmada River. There are four main vegetation types -
moist deciduous forest, dry deciduous forest, valley meadow, and dadar meadow. The moist
deciduous forest, which covers 27% of the Park area, is dominated by sal trees. The forest is
interspersed with grassy meadows, the result of early slash-and-burn cultivation by Baigatribals.
Positioned in the southern reaches of the Satpura range, Pench National Park is divided by
river Pench into practically two equal parts. This rich expanse is an abode to over 286 local and
migratory birds and king of Indian forests - the Royal Bengal Tiger. Pench National Park, with its
royal tigers and a number of other wild animals and birds, will reinstate the excitement you used
to have, while seeing ‘Mowgli battle Sher Khan’ in the world famous serial The Jungle Book. The
wildlife park is well-liked especially for its beautiful landscape and thrilling night safaris.

Department (Hunting Department) of the state.
By the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, the need for conservation of forests and
wildlife, was being felt all over India. In 1955, these forests were declared as "Sawai Madhopur
Sanctuary" and the practice of sale of forest produce through "royalty permits" came to an end.

This was when the forests of Ranthambore received their first "real" protection. However, legal
hunting continued unabated till 1973.
In 1973 a part of this Sawai Madhopur Sanctuary came under Project tiger scheme. At that
time there were 16 villages inside the sanctuary but 12 of these villages were shifted outside the
sanctuary. In 1980, in order to give greater protection to the forests, an area of 282.03 sq. k.m.
of the inner part of Sawai Madhopur sanctuary was declared as national park.
During the 1970s, tiger sightings were extremely rare in Ranthambhore but by the mid and late

the best place in the world to see wild tigers.
