Case Studyhabitat ‘67

This case study wasundertaken with fellow students Holly Simon, Kevin Lo and Matthew Jarvis as a means to understand a rich piece of historical archi-tecture: Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67.

All group members were involved in the decisions of what to present and how to represent it. I was specifi-cally involved in the build-ing of the large model, the backdrop sketch and the preliminary drafting.

Prairie Lantern

Prairie Lantern was a design project based on the creation of a single room.

My design focused on the idea of a warm lantern-like space sheltered by two large rammed-earth walls.

Maritime Museum Pavilion

This pavilion is an annex to the existing Maritime Mu-seum in downtown Halifax. It consists of a small addi-tion to the Museum itself, a gallery space and a boat-building workshop.

The building creates a spatial experience of compression and explodes the inhabitant into a piazza created by the pavilion.

Compound 19aHouse Design

Urbanization

Given a theoretical “garden plan” city block, myself and 18 fellow students were to augment it in any way we saw fit.

Each house was set in a row that faced a street on one side and a community gar-den on the other. Our group set up bylaws, circulation, landscaping and vegetation to create a functional, enjoy-able neighbourhood.

Process.

With an entire semester devoted to this house design, there was much debate, criticism and evolution of its form.

With advice from class-mates, working architect-tutors and guest critics the design process sought to bring out the essence of the idea while keeping in mind function and structural ef-ficiency.

Resolution.

The house is split into two zones: public and private which correspond to public and private gardens. The whole is envisaged as an inhabited fence with the bedroom space perched on top supported by pilotis.

The public zone housing the kitchen, dining and living areas opens out onto the public garden of the neighborhood.

The private zone is a two level space opening onto an enclosed, completelyprivate garden. The first floor houses a reading nook, stairs and an officewhile the second floor houses two bedrooms.
