Dear Parents
Yesterday morning we farewelled our Year 5 students as they embarked on their camp to Lake Moogerah.
This camp links into their Health and Physical Education essential learnings. The aims of the camp are for
students to develop self-esteem, confidence, resilience and strategies to work as a united team. Over the
next three days our students will have the opportunity to participate in kayaking, low ropes courses, the mission
mud course and team building activities. This will be an amazing excursion for all of our students and I sincerely
thank our Year 5 teaching team for their co-ordination of the camp. I especially thank this team (and their families)
for taking time out of their personal lives to provide our students with this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to
hearing all about the camp upon their return.
Parents’ and Citizens’ Association Executive
On Monday afternoon our school’s P and C Association conducted their 2017 Annual General Meeting. At this
meeting it gave me great pleasure to acknowledge and pay tribute to the 2016 executive for their leadership and
support. In 2016 this Association provided valuable guidance to our leadership team and much appreciated
resources to the students. This proactive group of parents commenced the ‘Mates for Mates’ breakfast initiative.
This initiative was aimed at bringing our school community together by celebrating the contributions of all.
On behalf of our school community I wish to extend a sincere thank you to Mrs Samantha Brutman (President), Mrs
Lisa Severiano – Davis (Vice President), Ms Amy Banning (Treasurer), Mrs Amanda Thomson (Secretary), Mrs Kim
Kouimanis and Ms Kristy Nicole Doolan (Duncan Delights Tuckshop Convenors) and Mrs Anita Kerrison and Miss Tara
Randall (Uniform Convenor) for their tireless efforts in meeting the needs of our students and wider community. It
has been a pleasure to work with these outstanding volunteers. I wish to also thank the many volunteers who also
worked in the school’s tuckshop and uniform shop during 2016. Without these dedicated men and women this
service would not be available to all of our parents.
I am delighted to acknowledge and sincerely thank the following members of our Association for accepting an
executive role in 2017. I am looking forward to working alongside this wonderful team to further improve the
opportunities for all of our students. I trust you will join with me in acknowledging and thanking our William Duncan
State School 2017 executive team:
Mrs Samantha Brutman – President
Mrs Kim Murly - Vice President
Mrs Amanda Thomson – Treasurer

Drop Off Zone
Over the past few weeks we have seen a number of Gold Coast City Council parking inspectors visiting our school’s
Explorers Way car park. I understand that these visits have been costly for a few of our parents and therefore am
seeking your feedback on ways to improve this area and ensure our students are safe. Whilst we are working
through any possible changes or enhancements I would like to remind all parents that we must model respectful
behaviour to all other road users. Over the past few days I have been made aware that several parents have been
abused and yelled at by other parents and road users while using the drop off zone. I seek your assistance to be
conscious that the standards of behaviour that we display while in the company of our children influences how they
interpret the world around them. Abusive language and disrespectful behaviour directed any other school member
is totally unacceptable. This behaviour erodes our school’s community feel and identity. I therefore seek your
patience while we begin to look for a better way to manage this difficult situation.
Important information for students with EpiPens ®
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has advised that four batches of EpiPen ® 300 microgram adrenaline injection
syringe auto-injectors are being recalled. If your child’s EpiPen ® is from batch 5FA665, 5FA6651, 5FA6652 or
5FA6653 (all of which expire in April 2017), return it to your pharmacy for a free replacement or refund.
It has been identified that EpiPens ® from the four affected batches may contain a defective part that could result in
the auto-injector failing to activate or needing to be applied with more force than normal to activate. It is important
to keep the current auto-injector until you get the replacement, and use it if required (being mindful that you may
need to apply more force than normal to activate it).
For further information see the TGA Recall Alert at:
www.tga.gov.au/alert/epipen-300-microgram-adrenaline-injection-syringe-auto-injector
If you have further questions or concerns, talk to your health professional.
Meet the Creeps
Being online has become a big part of everybody’s life; particularly for children who are growing up surrounded by
the internet, computers, smart devices and gaming consoles that offer unlimited networking possibilities. With the
power of these connections, it is important that we educate our children about safe and positive ways to be online.
Telstra and the Queensland Government have partnered to develop Creep Quiz: Are U Safe Online?
This quiz has been designed to provide insight into the online world and highlight some of the pitfalls for the unwary.
Lots of social media sites and apps require users to be 13 years and older; so as your child approaches that age, the
pressure from friends to use social media intensifies.
The Creep Quiz provides parents with an interactive tool that they can use with their child to talk about their digital
lives. Aimed at children from 11 years of age, this quiz addresses a variety of activities across a number of social
media platforms. Use the quiz to test your own knowledge and as an opportunity to discuss online safety with your
child.
You can find the quiz at http://www.creepquiz.eq.edu.au/index.html

MUSIC REPORT – Ms. Melissa Cole
On Tuesday afternoon we hosted our ‘Musical Mayhem Concert’. This concert was a dedicated performance opportunity for our beginner ensembles. It saw the unveiling of our 2017 Yr 3 Beginner String Ensemble and our Beginner Band Ensemble. Both beginner ensembles played beautifully, looked very professional and blended their sound to create a wonderful sense of creating music together. The concert was a great success and I thank both our instrumental music teachers, Miss Marten and Mr Denning, for their hard work and dedication in getting our students off to a flying musical start this term! ALL Music students should now have their music books and all equipment required for
their instruments. These items can be purchased from the school uniform shop on Wednesday and Friday mornings (8.15am – 9.15am).
A reminder, the Senior Band is performing on the school assembly on 28 March at 9am. All Senior Band members will be required to meet me in the hall at 7.45am for rehearsal, wearing their tartan uniform and black shoes. I look forward to seeing you there. UPCOMING EVENTS:
Tuesday 28 March – Senior Band performing on the School Assembly (9am)
If you have any questions or queries in regards to the music program, please contact me. Remember to always read the WDSS newsletter for upcoming music events and performances.
