Pastor’s Report 2015

Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories. Steven Wright And with those words, I look back on 2015 and see many memories of a year where church came to life. I am amazed when I look back at 2015 and the year it was. It began with our welcoming Rev. Cheri Di Novo, NDP MPP who spoke to us as we brought the formal educational part of the Affirming process to a close. What stood out for me was her sharing about her church community of Emmanuel-Howard Park United when she was there and its decision to close their church within two years and to find a way to spend their money going out. It was in this letting go that they discovered themselves and found life and a path forward in their ministry to those who found themselves homeless. There is much fear in the new by times and it can tend to be easier not to embrace the new but stay the course. But during our Annual meeting, you could say we let go and decided to take membership in Affirm United and become an official Affirming congregation by a resounding 88%. The process was incredible in that it took us into places and spaces we had never been before. But what is wonderful is that as a community we have helped shaped the Affirming process for other churches in our Lakeridge presbytery who have followed in our footsteps by expanding the process to how we welcome all people. Our celebration, with guest speaker Ruth Wood, to mark our official designation as Affirming was joyous and a realization that the real work was just beginning. Then on Feb 1st after being in the hospital for less than a month, I got the phone call from my dad that my mom was at the end of her earthly life among us. I was so grateful that Ken and Dawn told me to leave at that moment and I did. My mom was a great woman of faith and my dad upon hearing I was coming said “Mum will probably wait for you”. I said “tell her don’t bother, I have finished every phone call with them by telling them how much I love them and had no regrets or things left unsaid…plus there was a huge snow storm chasing me and I was going to get home ahead of it” and we both laughed. Our family gathered at my home church where I grew up and we prayed and sang my mum home to the God she loved. And Ken and Dawn again said take the time to be with our family we’ve got next Sunday covered. It allowed me to be present to arrangements and Family gatherings and my dad. And we felt so covered in loved by you all with your words and calls and flowers. You were amazing. And I remembered honouring my mom during children’s time upon returning by her and Dad’s signature song to the grand kids and great grand kids “I love you a bushel and a peck”. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for allowing me to be with my family at that time. Toward the end of February, I had the chance to take in one of the most incredible workshops ever in California on Watershed Discipleship with the guru himself Ched Myers. I found myself speechless (not easy right?) in the midst of some pretty incredible workshop participants from all over the world who are involved in this incredible movement. It has rooted me in new ways in ministry which might not be evident to some, but to me…very evident.

I continued to offer prayer leadership numerous times over the year with an online church group called CASA: An Experiment In Doing Church Online. During Holy Week, I loved the experience of teaming up with Stushie Digital Art wizard Rev. John Stuart from Knoxville, Tennessee who created incredible art pieces to go with my reflections. I did so a couple of more times during the year. This is a neat online community of 1400 people from all walks of life and faith who gather for morning and evening prayer online. I would create reflections for both morning and evening. You can find them on Facebook by searching the page title. In June, we joined in the 90th birthday celebrations of the United Church of Canada and gathered to ring bells, eat cake and check out pics and videos of our congregation over the past years. A good group were on hand and there was a real festive spirit and who does not like a birthday party, I ask you, right? In August, we had the 42nd General Council and I had the awesome experience of meeting up with the youth pilgrims in Kingston who were travelling all over Canada on their way to Corner Brook. They met with us as the Bay of Quinte Affirm Action committee of which I am a member. It was a chance for the young people to see the diverse ministries across the United Church and for us to see an incredible group of diverse young people and hear their stories. At this council, the commissioners voted to take a giant leap of faith and look at a new structure for our United Church and therefore a new way to live the gospel. 2016 will see remits and more information on how this will play out. So stay tuned. During 2015, I was also named chaplain to the Pickering Faith and Light group. This movement was started by Jean Vanier (founder of L’Arche) and is a monthly get together for families and members who live with developmental disabilities. We meet at the Rougement Co-op building for prayer and friendship on the third Thursday of each month. Also this past year, I was approached by PFLAG Durham’s Executive Director to be part of a multi church ad hoc committee to look at putting together a Pride church service for the 2016 Pride festivities in Oshawa. This is a diverse group looking at reaching out to the LGBTQ community and offering a safe space for a church experience and to have a chance to dialogue with them. This year, Sandy and I continued sharing our love with animals as important stewards of God’s creation. Sandy and I organized another successful fundraiser for Newf Friends dog rescue. We also had another wonderful Blessing of the Animals during our service. I love the many positive comments all across the age spectrum for that service especially among new members of our congregation. Also this past fall, it was so exciting to see Dunbarton-Fairport join hands with the Pickering Islamic Center as well as Pickering Village United to form New Beginnings: Interfaith Refugee Support Group. Together, we agreed to sponsor two brothers from Eritera in the Horn of Africa. They may have arrived at the time of writing this. A great spirit has been formed not only among our three faith groups but with the community who have joined in this endeavor in different ways.

We celebrated our 180th anniversary as a congregation and welcomed guest preacher Dr. Fred Graham. A gathering after with displays looking back from where we came and the challenge to look ahead with the same faith that brought us to be able to celebrate 180 years. I also welcomed a new neighbor in Rev. Steven Davis as the new pastor of Pickering Village United. I was invited to guest preach at his covenanting service and have had the chance to work with him a bit and look forward to deepening this new friendship. I am also part of a wonderful support group called “The Schemers”. We are ministers who are either new to ministry or new to the area in ministry. We meet monthly for breakfast and fellowship. We joke that originally we came together to plot the overthrow of presbytery…then the menus arrived and we forgot about the plotting. This is a wonderful group and we lean on each other in support and mutual sharing of ideas and work together to break down barriers between churches. I love this group! I was also excited to be part of two weddings of members of our church family. Cheryl Joe and Scott Fisher who were married down at Spadina House in Toronto as well as Heather Gallagher and Greg Unhola who were married here. As well our congregation came together three times to support families who were grieving the death of loved ones. We came together to surround Lorraine Flemming and family as they bid farewell to Don. And we came together two times around Murray and Pam Tetford…once to bid farewell to Murray’s sister Marva and then for Pam’s Mom Andrina. I also helped out at McEachnie’s and Simple Alternative often walking with families who had been estranged from church for some time. I also continued to reach out to our congregation encouraging each one to consider their gifts and looking to the life of our church family through committees or church projects and being generous in saying yes. I also worked with Session inviting committees to renew themselves through looking at mandates and new members. This conversation is ongoing into 2016. Our Advent season had a first “Sock it to Me” wild exchange of socks as part of our embracing the needs of Kasabonika First Nations in Northern Ontario. Thanks to the wonderful initiative of Johanne Blake, there has been an ongoing collection of much needed supplies and food sent up due to the high price of goods and the cost of flying them in. Thanks to Johanne for helping us live into the Truth and Reconciliation Comission’s recommendations in one small way. And finally thank you to our staff….Carol Taylor our Office Administrator and to Dawn Duncliffe our Director of Music. They are a rock of support and we work very well together. I appreciate them so much and their dedication and love for our congregation. I also want to thank Ken Collins, our LLWL, who has replaced me on many occasions at our Sunday service especially when my mom died. That was special and so kind and pastoral of you, Ken. And so I am full of gratitude of how this church family has dared to begin to live into the new Mission statement from one year ago bit by bit. Thank you for the love shared so generously. Rev. Jeff

Official Board in 2015

It is hard to believe that it is already 2016. Where did the time go and how did it go so fast. Dunbarton-Fairport is a very busy place with both community groups using the building and our own groups and committees. I find it difficult to remember all the amazing activities that happened here over the past 12 months. Some of the activities that I do remember are:

• Receiving our Affirm United Certificate and it being presented to the children of the congregation

• Walking in the Durham Pride Parade • Souper Sundaes, Turkey Suppers, Pot Lucks and BBQs • Garage Sale and Christmas Bazaar

All these activities and many others could not happen without the huge amount of volunteer hours of the people in and connected to Dunbarton-Fairport. As I am writing this, we are waiting on news on the arrival of Teame and Amine, the family of brothers we are sponsoring along with The Pickering Islamic Centre and Pickering Village United Church. This is just another example of how we are living our Mission Statement and following what we feel is what the Spirit is leading us to do. I am excited to see what we can accomplish in 2016 and in the future. Kimberly Collins

New Beginnings Interfaith Refugee Support Group (NBIRSG)

At the beginning of September a few members of the United Church and of the Islamic Centre were disturbed enough by the refugee crisis that we decided to meet and brainstorm how we could help. The result, after a couple of months work, was NEW BEGINNINGS INTERFAITH REFUGEE SUPPORT GROUP (NBIRSG). This group, with a formal commitment (to raise money) from Dunbarton-Fairport United Church *, Pickering Village United Church, and the Pickering Islamic Centre signed a Sponsorship Agreement and a Settlement Plan to sponsor 2 Eritrean brothers, Teame and Amine to be resettled in Canada, specifically Durham region. We have taken on the responsibility of resettling these two men, aged 39 and 27, and looking after their financial needs for one year (sooner, if they become self-sufficient). The money raised by Dunbarton-Fairport to date is $8,676.10 (which included Rev. Jeff & Sandy’s Open House fundraiser). We also applied for and received a grant of $5000 from the Toronto Conference (United Church). To date, the total money raised within and outside of Dunbarton-Fairport is $17, 497.44. We are still waiting for the arrival of Teame and Amine. Our resettlement volunteers are in place and we have temporary lodging for the brothers. After the men have had a chance to settle in, they will be involved in securing a permanent apartment. There will be so much for them to learn – how to get around using transit, how and where to shop, and how to adjust to Canadian weather and customs. If you’re like me, you may have never heard about Eritrea. My old atlas didn’t show it! If you would like to learn more, The Guardian Newspaper published a comprehensive series in August 2015 titled “Inside Eritrea”. A link to the Guardian Website containing all of the series is Inside Eritrea. *This endeavour was supported by Dunbarton-Faiport United Church’s Council on October 25, 2015. Jane Stone, Chair of NBIRSG

Session Report 2015

Session Committee Changes In 2015, there were several changes within the Session committee. In January 2015, Lesley Segal stepped down as Chair of Session and also resigned from the committee. We thank her for her eight years of service on Session, including her years as committee Chair. In place of Lesley, as Chair of Session, Krista Sheppard graciously stepped up and took over as Chair, while Marsha Barrett-Lehikoinen was installed as Vice-Chair of Session during our January 2015 meeting. In December 2015, Krista Sheppard stepped down as Chair of Session and resigned from the committee. Kevin Jordan was installed as Chair of Session during the December 2015 meeting. Marsha Barrett-Lehikoinen remained as Vice-Chair. Thank you to Krista for heading the Session committee in 2015 and all of her work on Session. Archiving of Office Files Session members spent one of the first days of the New Year going though boxes of archived files collected over the years. Content was sifted through and analyzed. Much of the content was recycled or identified for destruction if personal information existed and was no longer needed. Several boxes were collected at the end of the process and submitted for archival. Affirmed United Vote Consensus was that the session went very well. There was a concern raised about ballots being numbered. Some misinterpreted as a means to track how people voted, but was done to prevent extra ballots from being photocopied, potentially distorting the vote. All ballots distributed were accounted for and subsequently destroyed. Recommendations for next vote would be to:

1. Have each issued ballot initialed at distribution. 2. Include an “abstain” option on ballot so members have the option to register their abstention

from the vote. Affirming Process The Friendly Visitor group is in need of additional volunteers. At the moment it is an informal ad hoc group after the group was disbanded earlier in the year. Our current Wedding Application Form was revamped to eliminate gender bias in the form (e.g. references to “Bride” and “Groom”, which are gender specific).

Rev. Jeff was added to the Mission, Outreach and Advocacy committee (MOA). It is looking at: ▪ Encouraging Presbytery to assert themselves to be Affirming. ▪ Promoting Accessibility, Safe Place and Acceptance. ▪ Rev. Jeff also joining the Conference Affirm Action Committee. Accessibility No mandatory compliance issues in the building, based on the status of the use of our building, have been identified so far. The access ramp by the parking lot needs to be widened by 18 inches to meet code, and the window at the top of the ramp needs to be converted to a button-operated door to allow full access. The daycare entrance (east door that has access to the elevator) also requires some modification in order to meet accessibility standards. Further walkthroughs will be done looking for any other issues. This will include looking at the washrooms. Marketplace of Possibilities Provided an opportunity to offer congregation members opportunities to get engaged in the life and work of the church, which was held in the Upper Auditorium after the worship service on Sunday, October 4th. It was done to help encourage people to visit the tables, and consider how long they have been involved in their existing committee (if engaged), ¨What is your plan for Succession¨ should be asked of each committee member. Encouraged ¨self regulation¨ of respecting term limits for members, and encourage new members to join. The objective is to rejuvenate committees with new insights and ideas. The aim is to try to get youth and young adults engaged. With the lack of interest/turnout, it was suggested that we reach out to each committee to create a Plan of Succession (i.e. planning for how to replace members that are due to roll off the committee). Session to draft a reminder letter to each committee requesting that the committees add it to their agendas for their January/February 2016 meetings, with responses due March 1 2016. They are asked to provide suggestions of people to approach, or what features/skills would be beneficial to the committee work. Refugee Committee Applications for the refugees have been approved, and the timeframe for their arrival could be as early as late December. Fundraising so far is about $5,160 plus a $5,000 grant from Toronto Conference. Amounts are also coming from other groups outside of those directly involved in the committee. This already covers our commitment for the first month. Outreach for additional fundraising will be done using blogs, Facebook Page and email, as well as in our church Newsletter. Suitable accommodation options are coming around. Additional exposure to the community should result from interviews and photos with Jeff Doucette and Vaqar Raees published in the News Advertiser. Many people are stepping forward offering their help and household items.

Social Media Policy Because we are now an Affirming Congregation, the need for a Social Media Policy was identified. A draft policy was created and distributed for review; comments and suggestions were given. Discussion suggesting that an “Image opt-in” be part of the policy. The policy was presented to the Board for review and approval. Keep the Role of the congregation, including adherents, record of baptisms, and marriages In 2015:

• 11 members added • 4 members transferred in/reaffirmations of faith • 1 member reactivated • 10 members moved to non-residency role • 59 members removed • 4 Baptisms • 4 Weddings • 7 Youth Confirmations

Worship Committee Annual Report 2015

Hi everyone, First off, I would like to wish everyone a happy and joyous New Year. It was the year of becoming an affirming congregation and I’m glad to see that our church population seems to have grown and we are recognized as a place where everyone is welcome. As our mission statement states: “We are not alone; we live in God’s world - we are open to all people regardless of age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and cultural identity. During the year, we had some concerns regarding the timing of our Christmas Eve services. A lot of members asked if we could change the Christmas Eve Service times for both the 7pm family service and the 11pm communion service. Many wanted to either change the times of the services or to just have one instead. We had many discussions regarding these questions and we also had a show of hands during one of our regular services. As a result of the vote no changes were made to the service times and we went ahead with the 7pm and 11pm services as usual. With regards to special events and services we had a positive response and compliments on the presentation such as the Lent and Easter programs. This year we hosted baptisms, confirmations and hymn dedication services. Additionally, we had two guest speakers, two healing services and eight communion services. As a change for this year we had no summer services at Erskine. This change was due to the accessibility issues posed by this location and its lack of facilities, both, which posed challenges to some of our church members. We also celebrated out 180th year Anniversary in November. Lastly, we celebrated Advent and Christmas Service with joyous music. Special thanks goes out to our music director, Dawn Duncliffe, for her hard work and dedication to the music program this past year. Another thanks to the Reverend Jeff Doucette for a year of great ministerial work and thanks to committee members Mary Nesbitt, Ken Collins and Gale Hart. Thank you, Chairperson Alton Emanuel

Senior Choir The Senior Choir has had another year of providing great musical leadership to our Worship services. The choir sang at almost all of the Sunday services between September and June, along with special services on Christmas Eve and Holy Week, including the yearly singing of Handel’s “Hallelujah!” at the Easter Sunday service. The choir led the congregation through many familiar and less familiar hymns in the annual “Memorial Hymn Dedication” service held in May and also sang at the annual Memorial service at the Erskine Church in June. The summer brought its usual break from choir practice; however, many of choir members took this opportunity to continue to provide anthems through solos and small groups. A big “Thank You” to Christopher Taylor who filled in at the piano during my vacation time! After their break, the choir returned to practicing in September and prepared many anthems that was shared as part of the weekly Worship services. Membership in the Senior Choir is open to anyone who likes to sing in a group – the ability to read music is not a requirement! We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and then again on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. Many choir members have commitments that keep them from coming every week – that’s okay! Part-time is better than not at all! If you would like to join the Senior Choir and see what’s in store for 2016 for this fun-loving group (there will be a cantata and we’re hoping to do a concert…), please speak to me or to any choir member. Dawn Duncliffe, Director of Music

Prayer Tree & Prayer Shawl Ministry 2015 Annual Report

In 2015, the Prayer Tree continued its ministry of prayer. The Prayer Tree is a group of women and men who, as part of their personal ministry, have come together to pray with our Church family and our community about our concerns, needs, joys, and sorrows. The power of prayer is evident in joy and sorrow, in times of trial and in times of celebration. Created in 2004, Prayer Tree members have been witness to the awesome power of prayer – if you can think of it, we have been privileged to be witness to it through prayer. Prayer Tree members have prayed for the bringing of healthy children into the world, for those dying and preparing to meet Jesus in the life beyond death and everything in-between. Prayer Tree members receive prayer requests from individuals, from the minister, and from each other. Members usually receive information about the need for prayer via email, and, for those without email access, via telephone. Prayer Tree members

include these prayer requests in their own personal prayer time with God. Complementing the work of the Prayer Tree is our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Several knitters and crocheters in the congregation make prayer shawls which are distributed to those in our congregation and beyond in need of comfort and caring as well during times of celebration and job. The shawls are sent around on a Sunday morning and everyone is asked to add their own prayer to the shawl before it is given to the recipient. Prayers shawls have been given to babies at baptism, and to those undergoing medical treatments or mourning the loss of a loved one. Shawls are available to anyone who asks – attendance at Dunbarton-Fairport United is not a requirement! Church members have shared their stories of how the shawls have provided comfort, warmth, and sense of God and their church family wrapping their arms around them. If you would like more information about the Prayer Tree or the Prayer Shawl ministry, or wish to have the Prayer Tree pray for you or someone you know, please contact the Church office at 905-839-7271 or via email at [email protected].

Jeff Doucette, Christine Collins (Chair), Diane Gladwell (Secretary), Heloise Regan, Janet White.

Adult Bible Study The year started in January with both the Sunday morning and Monday morning groups studying the Parables as presented in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. After the summer break, we all started on a study of Prayer, particularly the Lord's Prayer, and it’s meaning to us. At the end of the session, in December, all were asked to write their own version of the Lord's Prayer, and these will be shared with the congregation over the next few months. We have started 2016 with the Sunday group looking at the book of John and trying to discover why it is so different from the other Gospels. The Monday group will be looking at the book of Galatians in order to learn more about Paul and his ministry. We are always looking for new people in both groups, so if you are interested, just drop in. Submitted by Ken Collins

Women’s Spiritual Book Club

Our book club members met monthly for fellowship, discussion on the spiritual aspects of the books we read, and prayer. We looked at the development of spiritual themes, the use of spiritual imagery, and discussed how the books related to our faith. We started the year with the “First Phone Call From Heaven” by Mitch Albom, followed by “The Kitchen House” by Grissom. In March we discussed “Lone Wolf” by Jodi Piccoult. In April we read “Caleb’s Crossing” by Geraldine Brooks, a novel based on the life of Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck, the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. In May we read “One Hundred Names” by Cecilia Ahern, and in June a dystopian novel, “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, followed by a screening of “The Giver” in McKay Hall, which allowed us to better visualize a world without emotion or memory. In September we read “The Chance” by Christian writer Karen Kingsbury, and then in October “Orphan Train” by Christina Kline, a novel based on the historical removal of orphans and children from impoverished families from United States eastern urban centres and transporting them by train to work for farming families in the mid-west. In November we read “And Then There Were Nuns: Adventures in a Cloistered Life” by Jane Christmas—a true account of one women’s journey in mid-life, listening to her Voice Within—the voice of God-- calling her to be a nun. 2015 was another very successful year, with interesting books on a range of topics and writing styles, challenging discussion, shared leadership and warm fellowship. We also facilitated two months of Dunbarton-Fairport’s Coffee Hour, and participated in the Presence Project. We are proud to use the public library services to secure our books. We finished the year with 21 active members and 4 adherent members. All women of the congregation are welcome to join us. Susan Neal

Christmas Crafters Christmas Crafters is a group of ladies who meet to make crafts for our Christmas craft room at the Annual Bazaar. We meet every Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon, September to Bazaar time. From January to May, we meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. We welcome any member of the congregation (or friends) to join us--no skill is required, only the love of doing crafts and enjoying a social time.

Friendly Visiting Work Group

In 2015, Work Group members continued efforts to connect with various Church members who might be in need of the Friendly Visiting service, and to reach out to adherents and members who may not have been attending Church for some time, to try to link them back into the life of our congregation. In June, Session approved a change to the way Friendly Visiting was being delivered, although the Work Group was disbanded, the actual services of visiting, driving members to appointments, etc. continues, as requested. Persons needing these services need only to contact the church office or Rev. Jeff, and they will reach out to the friendly visiting team and do their best to fill your request. Thank you so much to the Work Group members for their work over the past years, and willingness to continue to provide a Friendly Visiting service as needed. Susan Neal.

Stewards Report 2015

Following are the jobs we do to manage the financial affairs for the church. We pay the salaries of the staff, their benefits, the Conference assessment and other expenses. These include building related expenses such as capital repairs, utilities, insurance and the mortgage payments and also program related payments such as church school curriculum. We also create a budget each year for the congregation to pass at the annual meeting. (For more information, please see the United Church Treasurers’ handbook - http://www.united-church.ca/files/handbooks/financial.pdf) Helen Cox continued as the Treasurer this year. Because the Trustees had given us some money to help out in 2014 with replacing the roof over the old sanctuary, but we also received enough donations to cover its cost, we were not short on funds this year. However we incurred a lot of capital repairs with a total of about $22,150. These repairs included: Furnace repair - $2000 (rooftop unit) Sump pump for Lower Auditorium (to stop flooding) - $3000 Elevator Upgrade - $1900 (mandatory upgrade needed for all elevators) Eaves troughs – Sanctuary - $1900 Door and lock maintenance - $5350 Sanctuary North Doors replacement - $2330 Caulking of Sanctuary - $2200 Tree removal - $3600 Despite it looking like we have fixed everything we could possibly fix, there are still many outstanding capital repairs to do including concrete work to replace the missing handrails on the steps coming into the narthex, repairing stairs on east side (used by Daycare), roof over Mackay Hall, upgrading the accessible ramp to current standards and eventually repaving the parking lot. There is a strong possibility that the Lakeridge Presbytery Extension Council will forgive the balance of the loan they hold for our first mortgage (balance approximately $78,000 at 2015 Y/E). Assuming that this goes ahead, we would no longer pay this mortgage payment saving $12,650 a year. The 2016 budget as accepted by the Board has a projected deficit without the loan forgiveness. This assumes we can manage the capital expenses with a portion of the tower rent and either a donation by the trustees and/or an appeal. We would like to thank everyone in the church for their donations, for their contributions to the fundraisers, and also for working around all the rental groups we have. Many thanks go to our Office manager Carol Taylor for the work liaising with these groups which is large source of our income.

The committee met every month during the year, moving the meeting time around to accommodate as many members as possible. Helen provided an income and expense report, as well as a balance sheet each month for approval. Brenda McLaughlin continued as envelope secretary. A big thank you goes to Brenda for doing this work. Brenda is also the PAR coordinator and looks after gifts in kind recording. She also orders and looks after distribution of the offering envelopes. Brenda has now stepped down from the committee, but is continuing as envelope secretary. Julie Morrill has also stepped down from the committee after being secretary for the past 4 years and treasurer for 5 years before that. Helen Cox continued as chair of the committee. Jim Little continued to arrange for the counting to get done each Sunday. We would like to thank Jim for this and also all the people who do the counting each Sunday on a rotating basis. Although, Stewards are not officially in charge of fundraising for the congregation, we often had discussions about ways to increase our funds. Our other members of the committee are new member Joan Campbell and Bob Jackson (Trustees representative). Dave Mulholland of the Building Committee also sat in on most of our meetings. We are looking for more members to join the committee. Please speak to any member if you are interested, The committee would also like to thank Doug Cousins for doing a review of the 2014 church books. Helen Cox, chair

Property Management Report 2015 During 2015, the Property Management committee grew from the three members in 2014 to the current six members: Dave Mulholland, Alex Regan, Bob Thomas, Ian Smith, Mike Lehikoinen and past Committee Chairperson: Perry Halls. 2015 was a very busy year for Property Management and while the report looks long, so was the amount and significance of what was faced this year. The projects and outstanding issues completed or taken care of in 2015 included:

• The replacement of the north exit doors in the sanctuary as the old doors were wood and were rotting away.

• The installation of a sump and pump in the lower auditorium that has prevented several significant floods in that area.

• The eaves trough around the sanctuary were replaced to solve the leaks over the narthex doors. • Ten dead, dying or diseased trees were removed to ensure better safety around our grounds. • A cracked window at the top of the sanctuary was replaced. • All the windows around the sanctuary and narthex were re-caulked to improve the weather seal

around the building and help prevent future weather related damage. • An “Ordered” upgrade to the safety of our elevator was completed along with a change in the

company that is contracted to service this elevator. • An upgrade to the building fire alarm system was completed after we determined that there was

a deficiency in the system as the upper auditorium had no fire alarm bell and it wouldn’t meet code requirements.

• Several door repairs were completed, involving both interior and exterior doors improving the safety, security and accessibility of the building facility. This work involved hinges, door closures, crash bars and handles or latches.

• The conversion of building lighting to energy efficient LED lighting was initiated with about one third of the sanctuary lights being changed.

• A leak in the old sanctuary roof needed to be repaired when it was found late in the year that the roof replacement in 2014 had not been totally completed properly.

• Another leak, this one in the McKay Hall roof showed itself just before the Christmas season and this has been touched up to hold us through the winter. Fortunately, the warm December we had helped us get these roof tasks completed easily.

In addition to the above list, one significant work-party was held in the spring and a couple of smaller work initiatives were completed. The spring party greatly helped to brightened up the facility with most of the windows being cleaned to remove several years of dirt and grime. Our thanks go out to those who came out to participate and help out. Other volunteer work initiatives included some repairs to drywall and repairs to the sanctuary chairs. Again thanks go out to those who helped with this work also. Looking ahead to 2016 we have several issues that need addressing. After all the work that was completed in 2015, hopefully there are not many items discovered that cause the list for 2016 to grow very much. The list of major work needed to be done this year includes the following items:

• Replacement of the handrails on the stairs to the narthex, for personal safety,

Page 41: Dunbarton-Fairport United Church Annual Report 2015 · Dunbarton-Fairport United Church Annual Report 2015 . 2015 Annual Report 22-Jan-16 Page 2 of 59 Table ... Our celebration, with

2015 Annual Report 22-Jan-16

• Replacement of the stair treads on the west stairway, for personal safety, • Replacement of the roof over McKay Hall. This will be the first major task in the spring. • Breaking out and replacing the wheelchair ramp at the narthex door to improve our accessibility, • Fixing up and improving sidewalks around the sanctuary, both for safety and accessibility, • Fixing water leaks into the lower auditorium, • Completing many lighting upgrades both inside and around the exterior of the facility. The change

in lighting is somewhat expensive but will permit the savings of approximately 10 KW of electricity that we consume when we simply turn on all the lights throughout the facility.

Work parties will continue to be required periodically to complete the much needed painting and small maintenance work around the building. The Property Management committee simply cannot complete all the required effort on the property with only our current number of members and we desperately require additional members who can help out and bring additional skills to the team. We also need to say, once again, a special thanks to Carol Taylor, our church Office Manager, for all her ongoing efforts that support the day to day operation and maintenance of the site and the building. While not directly a member of the Property Management committee, Carol supports the efforts of the committee greatly, not only through her office efforts but also through her amazing efforts, (and those of her family), supporting the care and maintenance of the gardens and grounds around the site. Thanks also go out to all the other unnamed and sometimes anonymous efforts by all the church members who contribute so much to our ongoing property management efforts. In this report, I would like to include a look ahead to 2017. If we can complete the work already identified in 2016, hopefully the number of major tasks we will be facing in 2017 will be much smaller. While the number of items should be much less, we have to look ahead to possibly the most significant issue we have looming ahead of us, that being the repaving of the parking lot and driveways. As anyone who drives through this parking lot and experiences our own roller-coaster ride would attest, the current asphalt is certainly nearing its end of effective life. There have already been several patches, cracks and potholes filled. This facility has approximately 41,000 square feet, or 3,800 square meters of asphalt surface area requiring repaving and doing an area this size will be a significant expenditure. Dave Mulholland Property Management

Fifteenth Annual Summer Spectacular Garage Sale

On June 20th, we once again had our previously enjoyed articles for sale, out in front of the church, and as per usual, a bake table. There were a lot of items at the church and we had a number of people organize this on the Friday night. There was a great turn out of helpers to get set up in the morning and everything was set up and ready to go at 8.00. Once again, we had clear weather. As well, we had a barbeque later in the morning with hotdogs donated and hamburgers bought from donations from M&Ms. A bake sale was held. Various members of the congregation also donated soft drinks, juice, buns, condiments, coffee, milk, disposable plates, napkins, and home baking. Many thanks go to all that helped both early Saturday morning and the rest of the day with the last bit of cleanup being done fairly quickly after 2.00 P.M. and most was taken to the Salvation Army or Value Village. Along with the garage sale, there was a Home Party event put on by the UCW where tables were rented for people to sell their commercial goods. We were able to raise about $1645 for the church Program & Operating fund.

Bazaar Committee 42nd Annual Bazaar and Craft Show

“Deck Your Halls” On November 28th we held our annual bazaar – the largest fundraiser for the church. This year we were concerned that we would have less people than usual for 2 reasons, the repair of the culvert west of the church making it look like the road to the church was closed and also it was the same day as the Pickering Santa Claus parade, which lines up on Dixie and meant many more closed streets near the church. It may have taken customers longer but they did find the church and that Santa Claus parade had the effect of spreading out the customers across the 5 hours. This was the twenty-fifth year that we held a craft show with about 30 vendors selling their own homemade wares. This attracted again a large number of people to the sale and we once again had the opportunity to reach out to the community by offering the vendors this service. We continued to have our own variety of tables with items made and/or donated by the people of the church. For the 2015 bazaar, the conveners were as follows: Christmas Crafts – Christmas crafters Rolling Pin Bake Table - Miriam Little, (and the senior choir) Hot lunch – Helen Cox and Valerie Hendy (and about 63 others who helped or donated) Grandpa’s Garage – Bob Jackson and Ed Sumner Country Store –Karen Smith and Valerie Hendry Good Book Nook - Corrine and Brent Brook-Allred Pins and Needles –Crafty ladies Toys– Manfen Lau and Jean Carriere Outdoor signs - Murray Tetford Decorating - Sandy Lovisek Gingerbread - Linda Black Handmade cards – Gail Thomas and the Crafty Ladies By the Pound – Linda Black Poinsettias – Kimberley Collins Craft Show - Linda Black Silent Auction – Jane and David Stone Frozen Meals to Go –Helen Cox Raffle– Crafty Ladies Set up and take down – Many, many people helped here General Convener - Helen Cox We feel that the bazaar was extremely successful this year, both as a fundraiser and also as an opportunity for sharing our talents and time. It is difficult to know where to stop when giving out thanks, as everyone who contributed deserves many thanks. The conveners all did a wonderful job of organizing their areas, getting the necessary

helpers (who also deserve thanks). Thanks also goes to everyone who made or donated things such as home baking, homemade soup or chili, craft items, silent action items, etc. Also a thanks to all those who cleared out the sanctuary for the craft show, to those who set up tables throughout the church, and to all those who put the church back together again for the next day. A thank you goes to all who delivered flyers. And also a thank you to Ken Collins and Phil Cox who counted the money And incidentally, we contributed over $15,400 for the Program and Operating fund. Lakeridge Presbytery Representative’s Report 2015 As this report for our 2015 Annual Report is written, I’m keenly aware of the injunction to “change things up” and not just regurgitate the same tired stuff with different dates. As anyone who has ever been involved with bureaucracy knows ... that is going to be quite a challenge!! A song and dance is out! As Dunbarton-Fairport’s elected lay representative since 2005, each year I have tried to explain Presbytery in a different way. On a whim, this year I GOOGLED ... and found the following. If, after reading it, you’re dying to know more, check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Church_of_Canada

“There are 85 presbyteries within the United Church, each being a collection of about 20–60 pastoral charges. All members of the Order of Ministry, active and retired, Recognized Designated Lay Ministers under appointment as well as several other classifications of lay members are members of the presbytery—"presbyters"—rather than members of their pastoral charge. Each pastoral charge may also send delegates from the congregation to assist in decision-making. The presbytery is responsible for care and oversight of the pastoral charges within it.”

In 2015, our Presbytery representing 27 Pastoral Charges, gathered at the following United Churches - Westminster in Whitby; St. Paul’s Bowmanville; Enniskillen; Pickering Village; Simcoe Street; Newcastle; and St. Mark’s in Whitby. Our June meeting was cancelled as the incoming Chair was on Restorative Care for health reasons. The Annual Meeting was in May in Wellington and Belleville, Ontario. As well, the 42nd General Council met in Newfoundland in August. Many of our members of Presbytery were actively involved. In September, the licenses for 9 LLWLs (Licensed Lay Worship Leaders) were renewed, including our Ken Collins. April 21st Rev. Jeff and I participated in “Presbytery Support Sunday” where we provided worship leadership at Ebenezer-Maple Grove United in Courtice. Over 70% of Pastoral Charges took part in this exchange. Some of the topics dealt with at monthly meetings included major discussion and input into the Comprehensive Review Report and Proposals to General Council; a discussion on Physician Assisted Suicide and what proposed changes in Canada’s laws could mean to our congregations; and reports from the members who were “in the trenches” at General Council and who brought a unique perspective to the Court. Rev. Larry Doyle, from our Presbytery, is on sabbatical from Faith United to work on the next steps of the final Recommendations approved at GC42 in preparation for GC43, one of which will be a move to a three-council model consisting of communities of faith, regional councils, and a denominational council. Goodbye Presbytery. http://www.gc42.ca/news/council-passes-comprehensive-review

An item before Presbytery (and eventually Conference) which could have the greatest impact upon our own congregation is the Church Extension Council’s Proposal, presented in November. If all pieces fall into place, at some point in the future, our 2nd mortgage which is held by the Extension Council could see forgiveness, in part or in total. Please keep this in your prayers to come to fruition. Aside from the ongoing business of ministry staff changes being approved, real estate transactions brought about by the closing and or amalgamating of congregations, oversight of Pastoral Charges, etc., the members of Presbytery also spend much time in worship and support for those in life transitions. We mourn, we celebrate, and we congratulate ... and we certainly did all three this year. I continue to serve on the Ministry Vocations Committee, working with all levels of ministry candidates. We have been involved in a four-year pilot project called Candidacy Pathways. GC42 voted to roll this out to the entire church, feeling the process was such a success! This year, the Annual Meeting of our congregation will be asked to elect a second representative to Presbytery. This should ensure we have lay representation at each meeting in the event of vacation or illness. I am grateful to Andrew VanWyk who has stepped forward to fill this important role. Respectfully submitted, Jan Hannon

Church Office 2015 I began the year with organizing refreshments following our guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo on Sunday, January 4th. January is busy with the preparations for the annual meeting and 2015 involved nomination forms and ballots for our affirming vote. Accuracy of the membership role was critical. Ongoing review of the membership role is continuing with the assistance of Session members and our envelope secretary, Brenda McLaughlin. In February, I organized a work party for preparation for rug cleaning of the entire building. This was part of our new cleaning contract and considered a signing bonus. Dunbarton-Fairport currently has a very friendly couple, Lito and Adette, who clean our building on Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon. With the assistance of Helen Cox and Christine Collins, I completed the statistical data required by the United Church of Canada in February for on-line submission in early March. On Sunday, March 22nd we celebrated becoming an Affirming ministry and the church office together with Session and members of our Affirming and Diversity Committee arranged for lunch following the worship service. One of the real highlights of 2015 was organizing a reception and bell ringing for the 90th Anniversary of church union on Wednesday, June 10th. A great number of people participated and it was entertaining to watch the fashion show videos and Christmas eve pageants as well as dust off the photo albums. Together with members of my family, Session members, and great support from Jeff Doucette and Sandy Lovisek (who directed the decorating) we were able to host our first Christmas eve open house in the upper auditorium between the two Christmas eve services and following the late service. Thank you to Jeff and Sandy for your set up assistance and special thanks to Lori and Andrew Vanwyk, Christine Collins and Lynne Leyland who were able to stay and help us with the very late night clean up. I continue to work closely with our user groups, Bridges Kinderconnection, Renseikan Dojo, Owl Academy, Judith Jewer’s art programme, the Afghan community, 40th Pickering Pathfinders, Toronto CPR, 16th Ajax Venturers, AA groups (3), 84th Pickering Rangers and our FOOTPRINTS programme. Our yoga instructor, Stefanie Binder, decided to leave us in 2015 due to low attendance. This December, we were thrilled to welcome Long & McQuade for their Christmas recitals and over two days they organized seven different recital classes. We Care, Home Health Services, visited us on a monthly basis (fourth Wednesday) to service our footcare clients, a very dedicated group of people who have monthly or bi-monthly appointments. All who participated appreciated the We Care footcare nurse, Jodi. Appointments are available by contacting the church office.

I met monthly with other church administrators for lunch and sharing of information and mutual support. The group involves several employees of the United Churches in Durham region as well as Anglican and Presbyterian. In October, I attended my first Professional Church Secretaries Association conference in Leamington, Ontario. I now am part of a group that is organizing the conference for the next two years in Durham region. I also attended a seminar on Church Rental policy at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Pickering Village presented by the Canadian Council of Christian Charities. Our congregation was invited to three staff lunches this year at Crabby Joe’s and I make sure that the Fox Goes Free remembers that our Church at the Pub happens on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. The cemetery data is constantly being updated and the church office works with Susan Neal, Gail Serjeant, Julie Donaldson and Betty Seymour-Cummings to ensure that the Erskine/Fairport information is as accurate as possible. The addition of cell phones for the administrators and the publishing of those numbers has significantly reduced the number of cemetery related calls to the church office. The church office computer continues to offer it’s challenges as the MAC OS X has reached the end of it’s update ability so the browser is as good as it will ever be and the virtual Windows is running Windows XP. It is offered lots of hugs and loving words as it prepares the weekly PowerPoint worship services. Thank you for your support, Carol Taylor.

Dunbarton-Fairport United Church Women - Annual Report 2015 The UCW at Dunbarton-Fairport United Church consists of 2 units, one meeting on the first Sunday evening of the month, at the church and the other the second Wednesday afternoon of the month at the church. In total, there are about 38 members. After a number of years with the same executive, we had some changes this year. 1. Paula Spiers who was the recording secretary for the annual meeting as well as for the evening

unit, decided she would not run again. Christine Collins took over this position. A thank you to Paula for the years of doing this.

2. Carol Taylor who had been the UCW treasurer for many years also stepped down. We welcomed Sonya McRobb to this position. Sonya is not a UCW member but kindly agreed to do this work. Thank you Carol for the many years doing this job.

We had our annual meeting where we passed our budget and made our plans for the year.

We held a Souper Sundae in early February after church where we had home made soup chili, salads, French Bread, and make your own Sundaes. We once again made chocolate cream filled eggs that sold on the 4 Sundays before Easter. We assembled these at the church, and again sold out. We had 6 different flavours. A thank you to Paula Spiers for ordering icing sugar and chocolate and being general co-ordinator. Also a thank you to everyone who came out to help and those who donated other ingredients. We attended World Day of Prayer We held a second Souper Sundae Along with the garage sale we had an outdoor home party event that was very successful. Thank you to Valerie Hendry and Doreen Williams for organizing this. We had a pot luck lunch at the church for a joint social event We sold 65 2016 United Church calendars. We had another Souper Sundae with many people attending with the usual soup, salad, French bread and ice cream sundae menu. We held our twenty-fifth Fall Turkey Supper selling about 150 tickets with Helen Cox convening (helped by 30 UCW members and some from the rest of the congregation). A big thank you goes to everyone who served, waited, washed dishes, cooked turkeys, made mashed potatoes, baked pies, or donated vegetables, rolls, juice, butter, cranberry sauce etc. This year we once again served buffet style using our steam table. We continued to provide a flexible schedule.

Mincemeat was made two weeks before the bazaar at the church (for the Country Store) We asked the congregation for donations of hygiene products, sorted these and were able to deliver various shelters We bought supplies for a breakfast at the Fred Victor Centre and delivered these. Both units met at the Mandarin restaurant for a Christmas lunch. In addition, at various times during the year, we were called on to provide catering. We collected our nickels for the Least Coin, all proceeds go to the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada. We collected pop tin tabs, eyeglasses, stamps and Campbell soup labels that were passed on to aid various charities through the Presbyterial. We also continued to run Operation Backpack collecting items for it, as well as collecting items for the Back Door Ministry. Our members attended the three Presbyterial meetings held. The 2015 executive was as follows: Evening Unit Chairman - Valerie Hendry Secretary - Christine Collins Afternoon Unit - Chairman - Marjorie Green/Mary Nesbitt Secretary - Miriam Little Treasurer - Marie Lynde General President - Helen Cox General Treasurer - Sonya McRobb Cards & Flowers - Maxine Sumner Least Coin Marnie Schofield An invitation is extended to all women in the congregation to come and join one of our units for meetings with worship, program and social time. Respite in a safe and happy environment for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

FOOTPRINTS 2015 Annual Report FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism is a respite-only outreach program for families with children who have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism is unique for it is a volunteer-driven program dedicated to giving the families of children affected by Autism the precious gift of time in a low-cost program that fosters a safe and happy environment for the children. FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism was established in 2004 as an outreach ministry of Dunbarton-Fairport United. In 2009, the program expanded to a second location at St. Mark’s United Church in Whitby. Under the guidance of qualified Program Consultants/Supervisors, and supported by an Operations Manager, a Strategic Consultant and a dedicated Steering Committee, the program trains and utilizes volunteers ranging in age from 14 – 75+ to provide creative, stimulating, and skill-appropriate activities for children on the Autism Spectrum. In doing so, FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism provides the parents and siblings of these children with a few precious hours of ‘time away’ to recharge, attend to household tasks, or to simply spend some quality time with each other. Taking Bigger Steps in 2015 We are very grateful to The Durham Community Foundation for their continued support. In 2015, The Durham Community provided funding for a pilot program Together We ‘Hang’. A social program for youth on the Autism Spectrum and their peers. Participants are paired with a volunteer for a social gathering fostering inclusion, acceptance and friendship. In partnership with the Pickering Library, FOOTPRINTS ran the weekly drop-in program from April-September. We are very excited to announce Together We ‘Hang’ will run again in 2016 – thank you again to The Durham Community Foundation. Together We ‘Hang’ Program Feedback Parents: Do you think your child enjoyed this program? What did your child take from this program? “Definitely. Learning to socialize with peers better.” “Yes. Had some fun and greater ease with peers.” “Amazing. Maybe more than one day – maybe twice per week.” Participants (youth on the Autism Spectrum): What did you like best about this program? “Game playing.” “Video games and talking to others about them.” Do you think you benefited from this program? “Yes.” “Yes, because it helped me make some friends.”

Volunteers: “We could do a play for the parents.” “Maybe have this program in the afternoon on weekends during the school year.” “Hope it continues. Loved the kids and the program was amazing.” “Movie out with the kids was great – had an amazing time, all went well.” Heading into 2016 expansion of our program is still precedence. As of December 31, 2015 we have seven families on our waitlist for our Whitby respite session. This is enough to run another program at St. Mark’s. As Pickering Friday night numbers were low (due to children aging out and moving), we did attempt to move the Friday program to Whitby. However, we struggled with getting enough volunteers. To succeed a respite session needs a pool of fifteen volunters willing to commit to that session. In addition to expanding our Whitby program, we have seen a need to start a program in Clarington that would serve families living in the east end of Durham Region. Volunteer recruitment is always a priority – for child care volunteers and steering committee volunteers. Continuing to offer outstanding programming, FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism realized the following targets to the benefit of the children and their families: • 45 children and their families received support from the program • 2372* hours of direct respite care was provided in Pickering and Whitby in 2015

o 1548* hours at FOOTPRINTS Pickering o 824* hours at FOOTPRINTS Whitby

• 158 Child Support Volunteers provided 3909* hours of time to the program (in direct care, training and program oversight responsibilities). *not final numbers

• 41 new Child Support Volunteers were recruited and trained in 2015 o A total of 651 hours were spent in training all volunteers

• 11 Steering Committee volunteers gave 695 hours of time to program operations and management

• Camp Great Strides 2015 – Investors Group, Pickering and Baagwating Community Association provided funding for camps

• Recipient of $14,900 in funding from the United Way of Durham Region • Secured Operations funding from the Andrews Foundation, Harry E. Foster Charitable

Foundation, Durham Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Pickering, George Lunan Foundation, The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation

• Bridge Street United Church Foundation – received funding for sensory packages to develop a Sensory Integration Program

• The Georgina Foundation – received funding to purchase four tablets and apps to maximize participants language skills

• Unity For Autism – secured funding for 2016 Camps and their expansion to offer a full-day option. Over the last few years attendance at our Summer and Christmas Break Camps has been dwindling. Feedback from parents - they need full-day camp

Thank you to Our Faith Communities For the past eleven years FOOTPRINTS has had two very good homes. Without the support of our church families we could not offer such an amazing program. Thank you to Dunbarton-Fairport UCW and to St. Mark’s UCW for always thinking of FOOTPRINTS. To both congregations and Rev. Jeff and Rev. Deb – thank you for your faith in our program and for your patience and understanding when accidents happen. We are extremely grateful to the United Church Mission Outreach Ministry and Social issues Project for their continued faith in our services. And, thank you to Faith United Church in Courtice for their continued financial support in 2015. FOOTPRINTS Staff (as of January 01, 2015)

What are families saying about FOOTPRINTS?

“The 1:1 ratio and the fact that I can leave my children and feel comfortable that they both will engage in the activities that are appropriate and that FOOTPRINTS’ staff let them take the lead for

their learning.”

“I love the activities and the photos. I feel that I can still participate and know what they have done through their time at FOOTPRINTS when I see and can share the photos. I use the photos to talk

about our day and create a social story around them to prepare for their next day.”
