Issue 1 Term 3 Week 4 Wednesday 10th August 2016
Delroy Campus – Year 7 Transition Evening
We pay our respects to the Wiradjuri people, who are the
traditional custodians of the land on which Delroy Campus
sits, and pay respects to Elders past and present and extend
that respect to all Aboriginal people who are part of our
school community. What outstanding students we have a Delroy! You will see in
the newsletter many examples of student excellence inside
and outside the classroom. These opportunities only occur
because of the dedicated teachers and staff we have at Delroy.
I would just like to highlight a few examples of our outstand-
ing students.
At the end of last term Member for Dubbo and Deputy
Premier Troy Grant announced Ngali Shaw as the inaugural
2016 Aboriginal student of the year for the Dubbo Electorate.
Mr Grant presented Ngali with this award at a ceremony held
at South Campus saying “Ngali has been a fine mentor and
good role model for other students both Aboriginal and non-
Aboriginal”.
Ngali will now join other students from across NSW and head
to Sydney in Week 3 to attend the Emerging Leaders Forum,
where they will meet with Aboriginal, business and
Government leaders.
This follows on from Maree Pobje winning the Dubbo
Electorate Soap Box Challenge in April hosted by Member
for Dubbo and Deputy Premier Troy Grant.
Ngali Shaw, Tim Boney (Delroy Campus) and Amberlilly
Gordon (Senior Campus) have gained selection to the
Bangarra Dance Theatre part of the NSW Public Schools
State Dance Ensemble and now have a gruelling schedule of
rehearsal to attend in Sydney for the State Dance Festival and
the State Schools Spectacular. Our SLSO and Aboriginal
dance leader, Mr Doug Gordon will accompany the students.
Shannon Kassell was the NSW winner of the NAPCAN
child protection poster competition. Her poster on the theme
of “Protecting children is everyone’s business” is now being
printed ready for National Child Protection Week
4th to 10th September.
We also have a number of students who have been selected in
CHS western teams:
Gymnastics: Dakota Lacrosse and Elwyn Green
Netball: Krystal Dallinger
Cross Country: John Hill, Bailey Lacrosse and

CAPA Excursion
NEWS – Thank you everyone who has shown interest in the CAPA excursion this year, no doubt it is one not to be missed. The 37
original places have been filled. Unfortunately, there was some miscommunication and too many have been given access to
pay their deposit. Due to this, we have to notify approximately 13 students who will now be on a waiting list as they were
‘outside’ the 37. A list of the 37 students plus the 13 on the waiting list can be found outside the Art Staffroom and the Music
Staffroom. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!
CLASSROOM REPORTS –
Visual Arts: Year 7 and Year 8 – Both Year 7 and Year 8 classes have made a swap from music to art and vice versa. This means they
each have new teachers and new classrooms and therefore received a new timetable at the beginning of this term. It is
Semester 2 already and each class has shown great enthusiasm to learn new skills in Visual Art and have adjusted to their new
learning environment in a positive way.
Year 7 will begin looking at Portraiture, creating several portraits including self portraits using a variety of different
materials. Exploration is an important aspect this term so that the students become familiar with most artmaking materials.
Year 8 are investigating the graffiti world
and street art. Already the students have
been introduced to street artists Banksy
and King Robbo through the insightful
documentary ‘Graffiti Wars’. In the
coming weeks the students will be making
and printing their own stencil as well as
begin designing and printing their own
Lino print design. They have already
begun designing their own tag to create a
collaboration piece for the classroom. It’s
going to look awesome!!
Right and below is a series of photo-
graphs from semester one, Years 7 and 8
students, with completed assessment
work. They were all such great pieces of
work and each student should be proud of
their efforts.

Photography –
The photography elective class will be investigating, in depth,
composition and how composition will make and break a photo-
graph. The students will be participating in a lot of practical tasks
requiring them to move around the school, photograph objects/
scenes, making progress on a ‘checklist’ they will each receive to
complete throughout the term. Photographs from this checklist
will be used to create a portfolio of work for assessment.

7 DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 10th August 2016 7
Delroy students training in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award
recently travelled to the Warrumbungle National Park for a Practice Hiking
Expedition. Planned, were three hikes: a large hike to the Grand High Tops
and Bread Knife, and two shorter ones to Burbies Canyon and Belougery Split
Rock. Things didn’t quite go to plan however …
Serious rain started as we drove up from Dubbo on the Sunday morning, but
we did think it would clear enough for us to hike. We set up tents in Camp
Blackman because hot showers after clod walks seemed like a great idea, and it
did work well to keep us warm at the end of each day. What we hadn’t banked
on were the two creek crossings between us and the walks rising to the point
they were closed.
For a day and a half we kept our-
selves busy with short walks and
chat sessions. The weather sort of
cleared but by lunch Monday, with
the creek still up, some of us were
running out of dry gear. After call-
ing the Ranger for advice, he very
kindly came across and together
we measured the flow and depth of
the crossings. Knowing that more
rain was on the way and we would
possibly be forced to stay several
more days, we decided to chance the crossings.
We drove through the crossings with just the ranger to start with, to make sure
they were OK, and then decided to strike camp quickly (we had about 20
minutes!), and try the crossings with everyone on board. A bit exciting, but we
got through OK and after travelling through more heavy rain. We got back to
Dubbo in the dark, but ready for another hot shower and a warm bed.
It’s a race - ready, set, go…….
Mr Paul Woodhead Duke of Edinburgh Leader We are ready for anything……..
Hmmm, still rising…... Rainy day activities….
