Chile’s Atacama desert may seem to contain little besides red-grey rocks and sand -- but scientists are busy

searching here for clues to life in a place it much resembles: Mars.

This desert in northern Chile, like the red planet, is hot, dusty and extremely dry.

Yet life exists here: tiny algae and bacteria that have evolved to survive in the parched earth on little more than sunlight.

If they have done it here, then why not on Mars, 225 million kil-ometers (140 million miles) away?

“If life existed there, it would probably be very similar to life here,” says biologist Cristina Dorador from the nearby Univer-sity of Antofagasta.

“We do not know if that is the case, because we do not have any

evidence,” she adds, as she breaks up bits of rock salt in an area of the desert known as Yungay Station.

“But if we manage to under-stand how these micro-organisms live, how they obtain moisture and how they adapt to these con-ditions, then probably very soon, when we have more information about life forms on other planets, we will have something here on Earth to compare it with.”

Dorador will analyse the frag-ments in a mobile laboratory which she drives around the desert in search of tiny life forms.

She is one of dozens of scien-tists from various countries working on different Mars-related projects in the Atacama desert.

Separately, US space agency Nasa in February carried out its second phase of practice-drilling for samples in the earth of Ata-cama with specially designed rovers.

COVER STORYMONDAY 10 APRIL 2017 03“If life exists or ever existed

on Mars, the planet’s surface dryness and extensive (sunlight) radiation exposure would likely drive it underground,” Nasa said in a report.

“That makes locations like the Atacama good places to practice looking for life on Mars.”

If fossil life on Mars resem-bled Atacama, it could shed light on our own origins.

“Studying Mars may help understand how life started on Earth,” says Christian Nitschelm, a French astronomer at Antof-agasta University.

Space agencies and science fiction writers alike have long been fascinated by Mars -- one of the closest planets to Earth.

The Soviet Union and United States started aiming probes there in the 1960s.

For the past four years NASA

has had a robot, Curiosity, on the planet searching for life.

It has sent back photographs of the planet’s surface whose grey rocks look much like those of Atacama.

NASA plans to send a sec-ond robot there in 2018. In 2020, Russia and the European Space Agency also aim to send one to drill the Martian soil.

US President Donald Trump has taken up his predecessor Barack Obama’s pledge to send humans to Mars in the 2030s.

Scientists have detected traces of water and methane gas on Mars, raising hopes of find-ing life there.

Within our solar system, there is nowhere but Mars with such conditions for life, Nitschelm says.

“If there is no life on Mars, there is none anywhere” but on Earth, he says.

As part of the American School of Doha’s (ASD) focus on global citizenship

and community service learning, fifth grade students recently con-tributed funds to help build a school in Kenya.

The Machakos Education Center is an ongoing project of ASD and students were thrilled to con-tribute by raising funds.

Many children in Africa walk an hour or more each way in order to attend school. To understand what that is like, and to show them support, fifth grade students and others walked the track one hour

in the morning and one hour in the afternoon.

“One of our values is compas-sion,” said fifth grade student Payton,

“and we are putting it into action by sharing the experience of walking to school. The money raised will help students in Kenya have a school that is closer, and this will increase their learning time.”

Students, parents and other members of the ASD community came out to walk, run, and have fun in an engaging event that has become a tradition. “Fifth grade students have organised this fund raiser for several years and it helps

them connect to others,” explained Walk-a-thon Teacher-Sponsor Alli Farmer. “The walk is supported with classroom activities that help

the kids understand the world around them. It’s a week that extends their learning and encour-ages them to be global citizens.”

Twelve Georgetown Univer-sity in Qatar students returned from an intensive

nine-day trip to Cambodia to learn about the role of education in the development of the Southeast Asian nation.

The students were in the coun-try as part of the University’s community education programme, which aims to provide them with real-world experience of theoret-ical concepts discussed in class.

Through workshops both before and during the trip, students were briefed onthe state of education in Cambodia and the impact of the genocide orchestrated by the Khmer Rouge regime, where vast numbers of intellectuals and academics were killed. They were then able to meet with local community members to gather their own understanding of how the country is dealing with the effects of this tragedy, more than three decades later.

“Every year we look at different

case studies that are interesting to our students and tie in to what they study in the classroom,” explained Uday Rosario, assistant director for student programs at GU-Q. “We decided on Cambodia because of the role education played in the genocide, and the role that educa-tion has played in the growth of the state.”

This year, the programme included input from student lead-ers, who worked with GU-Q staff to select the destination and focus of the trip. Students spent 10-12 hours in the classroom before departing to Cambodia, and spent three days meeting withdevelop-ment actors, academics, students, and government officials on the ground to learn about their experiences.

“A lot of the things we were exposed to came back to the Khmer Rouge and their history,” said GU-Q student Farah Mazen Mahfouz (SFS ’18).

COMMUNITY MONDAY 10 APRIL 201706

Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), a unique charita-ble organisation under the

patronage of Embassy of India, Qatar, undertakes the noble task of providing succour and solace to the needy and underprivileged breth-ren in Qatar by providing all possible and practical assistance.

ICBF is conducting the Hajikka Memorial Essay Writing Contest 2017, in memory of Late Hajikka on April 15 from 8.30am onwards at Bhavan’s Public School (New Salata Area, Near Midmac Bridge). Approx-imately 360 students of classes 7th to 12th from at least nine prominent Indian schools from Qatar will be participating in this contest.

The contest is mainly intended to inculcate the need of benevo-lence in young minds to help the needy, as these students stride the path towards their prospective future. It would also help to spread awareness about ICBF services in Qatar and serve as a source of inno-vative young ideas to expand ICBF services in future for the benefit of the society.

Late Hajikka was a social and charitable activist who is remem-bered for his humanitarian services spanning 40 odd years in Qatar.ICBF is conducting the Hajikka Memorial Essay Writing Contests since 2014. And every year efforts are being made to include more children to participate in this con-test from more schools.

The theme for the contest remains benevolence and human-ity depicting the nature of the commemorated personality

Hajikka. When MV Abdul Khader Haji, addressed by people of Doha as beloved Hajikka, passed away at the age of 67 on December 22, 2013, after his 47 years of social service in Qatar, he not only left his wife Zuhra and four children, but also a legacy of life and death with an invaluable message.

He conveyed to his fellow human, that whatever differences life had to offer, death unites all on a common ground. Irrespective of religion, nationality and language,

people used to seek his assistance, whenever a dear one passed away, to perform their final rites, to com-plete the legal entanglements and medical formalities and Hajikka used to do it considering it a divine responsibility without expecting any worldly returns.

Though loosing him left an irre-placeable vacuum and was mourned by every soul who knew him or who at one time or other had been a subject of his benevolence. ICBF considers itself fortunate till date that he worked in association with it as a part of its Death Case Task Force and was honoured to confer this advocate of humanity with the Indian Community Benev-olent Forum Humanitarian Award during 2003-2004. It is said about Hajikka, that he never used to com-plain of anything and found peace within whatever that life had to offer him. He was ever thankful to the Creator for whatever he extended to him.To Hajikka, life was a simple message of love, char-ity and benevolence addressed to a common final destination.

Qatar University College of Medicine (CMED) recently organised the “Hands-Only

CPR” awareness campaign to com-memorate the ‘Heart Saver Month’ initiated by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Organised in collaboration with QU Health Clinic, the event engaged over 131 students, staff, faculty and visitors. Participants had the oppor-tunity to learn the skills of Hands-Only CPR, a life-saving activity that calls people to act in critical situations. They practiced chest compressions on manikins and received instant constructive and corrective feedback.

CMED Professor and Head of Clinical Education Dr Alison Carr praised the organizers and

volunteers for their synergy and great efforts that resulted in a suc-cessful and valuable initiative. She noted that Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths, recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an “out-of-hospital” set-ting.QU Health Clinic Head Dr Hafsa Hashad said: “We are definitely proud to be part of this initiative that serves the vision of the cluster to create a healthier Qatar.”

CMED Lecturer Dr Ayad Al Mosleh said: “By reaching out to people and conveying this impor-tant message, we help creating a more aware and safer community. People need to know that their actions can make a difference.” Hands-Only CPR can save lives. As

per the AHA, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chances of survival. Most people who experience cardiac arrest at

home, work or in a public location die because they do not receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene.

Ever wondered why babies love and adore superheroes? It may be because they are born

with a sense of justice -- a concept portrayed through the heroic acts of the characters, researchers say.

The findings showed that infants, as young as six months old, who can barely talk, are capable of recognising the heroic acts of jus-tice and thus find themselves drawn to figures who protect the weak.

This also explains why kids and adults alike have a never-ending love affair with superhero stories in popular culture, the researchers said. “Six-month-old infants are still in an early developmental stage and most will not yet be able to talk. Nevertheless they can already understand the power dynamics between different characters, sug-gesting that recognising heroism is

perhaps an innate ability,” said David Butler from Kyoto Univer-sity in Japan. mFor the study, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, the team con-ducted a series of experiments where infants were shown anima-tions of one geometric character chasing and bumping into another, as a third character watches from a distance.

In one version, this third party character intervenes, and in another, it escapes in another direc-tion. When the infants were then shown real life replicas of these intervening and non-intervening characters, they were more likely to choose the intervener, the researchers said.

“In human society, selflessly protecting the powerless is con-sidered an act of heroic justice,” added Yasuhiro Kanakogi from the Kyoto University. However,

understanding these may be com-plex as one has to first grasp the power relationship between the actors, then understand that the

hero’s actions are favourable for the victim but not for the villain, and finally, that the hero acted deliberately, Kanakogi said.

Your baby’s love for superheroes may be innate

Dogs -- known as the man’s best friend -- are also capable of adopting

human perspective to correctly interpret cues and find food that they cannot see themselves, research has revealed.

The findings showed that by adopting the position of a human or seeing things from their own-er’s point of view and following their gaze, dogs can identify whether a human has an eye on a food source and, therefore, know where the food has been hidden.

“The ability to interpret our behaviour and anticipate our intentions, which has obviously developed through a combina-tion of domestication and individual experience, seems to have supported the ability to adopt our perspective,” said led investigator Ludwig Huber from the University of Veterinary Med-icine Vienna.

Within the first four or five years of life human beings

develop the ability to understand and interpret mental states such as emotions, needs and intentions of their fellow-being and react accordingly, while it is usually denied in animals.

In the study, published in the journal Animal Cognition, researchers developed a new

‘Guesser looking away’ test, which gave clear evidence of dogs being able to adopt human perspective and take advantage of it.

In the experiment, a person in the middle hides the food and the potential informants were kneeing left and right of this hider.

“To get the food, the dogs have to understand who knows the hiding place (Knower) and who does not and can, therefore, only guess (Guesser).

“They must identify the informant they can rely on if they have to decide for one food con-tainer,” Huber noted.

In nearly 70 per cent of the cases the dogs chose the con-tainer indicated by the Knower.

Being able to adopt the per-spective of a human does, however, not require the ability to understand intentions or wishes. “But the study showed that dogs can find out what humans or conspecifics can or

cannot see.“By adopting the positions of

humans and following their gazes geometrically, they find out what humans see and, therefore, know

-- and consequently whom they can trust or not,” Huber said.

Spring is a glorious time for sea-sonal cooks, especially us plant-based ones, because,

well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Out with the turnips, in with the asparagus! And more.

Early in asparagus season, I find it hard to resist simply steaming, blanching or even broiling them, and eating them with a simple sauce. But soon enough, I’ll be look-ing for other ideas, which is where this pasta recipe comes in. It’s from Alice Hart’s new book, “Good Veg” (The Experiment, 2017), and it’s a keeper.

Hart has you blanch asparagus stalks for a pesto - but not before saving the more delicate tips and quickly sauteing them. The pesto combines with whole-wheat pasta; you fold in some white beans for extra texture and protein, and serve the dish with those asparagus tips

on top. It’s another fine way to wel-

come asparagus back to the table, all spring long.

Penne With Asparagus Pesto and White Beans

6 servings, HealthyVegetarian Parmesan (dairy

cheese that does not use animal rennet) is made by such companies as Sargento and Bel Gioso and can be found in Whole Foods Markets and other stores.

Adapted from “Good Veg: Ebul-lient Vegetables, Global Flavors, a Modern Vegetarian Cookbook,” by Alice Hart (The Experiment, 2017).

Ingredients12 ounces (1 large bunch)

asparagus1 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus

more as needed12 ounces dried whole-wheat

penne, or another short pasta shape3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon

extra-virgin olive oil2 small bunches basil (1 loosely

packed cup)1 clove garlic, chopped1/4 cup raw almonds1 teaspoon finely grated lemon

zest, or more as needed, plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, or more as needed

1/2 cup vegetarian Parmesan cheese, finely grated, plus more for serving (see headnote)

One 15-ounce can no-salt-added cannellini beans, drained and rinsed (about 1 1/2 cups)

StepsTrim and discard the tough/

woody ends of each asparagus spear. Cut the tips with about a thumb’s length of stalk and reserve them; cut the remaining stalks into 2-inch lengths.

Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil over high heat, add the teaspoon of salt and the 2-inch pieces of stalks; cook until tender,

3 to 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a food processor.

Once the water in the saucepan returns to a boil, stir in the pasta and cook according to the package directions, or until al dente. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking water.

Return the (now-empty) sauce-pan to high heat. Add the asparagus tips and 1 teaspoon of the oil. Cook, stirring constantly, until they are lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn off the heat (you’ll use the pan one more time) and transfer the tips to a plate.

Stack, roll tightly and cut a few large basil leaves into ribbons; reserve for garnish.

Combine the garlic, almonds and the remaining basil in the food processor (with the asparagus pieces). Add the tablespoon of lemon juice and the remaining 3 tablespoons of oil; pulse to form a coarse puree, stopping to scrape down the sides a few times. Add the lemon zest and vegetarian Parm; pulse a few times to incorporate and form the pesto. Taste and add more lemon juice and/or salt, as needed.

Return the saucepan to medium-low heat. Add the drained pasta, along with the beans and the asparagus pesto. Toss gently to incorporate, adding just enough of the reserved pasta cooking water, a few tablespoons at a time, to cre-ate a creamy sauce.

Once the pasta has warmed through, divide it among warmed bowls or plates. Top each portion with some sauteed asparagus tips, basil ribbons and more cheese. Serve right away.

Men with more grey hair -- irrespective of age -- may be at increased risk of heart disease, warns a new study.

“Our findings suggest that, irrespective of chronological age, hair greying indicates biolog-ical age and could be a warning sign of increased cardiovascular risk,” said Irini Samuel, a cardi-ologist at Cairo University, Egypt.

Atherosclerosis, build-up of fatty material inside the arteries, and hair greying share sim-ilar mechanisms such as impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal changes and senescence of functional cells.

“Atherosclerosis and hair greying occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age,” Samuel added.

This study -- presented at EuroPrevent 2017, annual congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), being held at Malaga, Spain from April 6-8 -- involved 545 adult men.

The researchers assessed the prevalence of grey hair in patients with coronary artery dis-ease - usually caused by atherosclerosis -- and whether it was an independent risk marker of disease. The amount of grey hair was graded using the hair whitening score - one referring to pure black hair, two to black more than white, three to black equals white, four to white more than black, and five to pure white. Data was col-lected on traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, smoking,

dyslipidaemia and family history of coronary artery disease. The researchers found that a high hair whitening score (grade three or more) was associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease independent of chronological age and established cardiovascular risk factors. Patients with coronary artery disease had a statistically significant higher hair whitening score and higher coronary artery calcification than those without coronary artery disease. “A larger

study including men and women is required to confirm the association between hair greying and cardiovascular disease in patients without other known cardiovascular risk factors,” Sam-uel said.

“Further research is needed, in coordination with dermatologists, to learn more about the causative genetic and possible avoidable envi-ronmental factors that determine hair whitening,” she added.

Patients who develop itchy wheals in response to cold or friction, benefit from treatment with omalizumab, a drug nor-

mally used to treat asthma, a new research has found.

The drug’s active substance is highly effec-tive against different types of inducible urticaria, a skin disease characterised by itchy wheals, which develop in response to physical stimuli such as cold or friction, the results of two sep-arate clinical studies showed. “Our results show that patients with severe forms of physical urti-caria can benefit from treatment with omalizumab,” said one of the researchers Mar-tin Metz from Charite - Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany.

The results were published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. As part of two placebo-controlled trials, the researchers

used omalizumab to treat two different patient groups (61 patients with symptomatic dermog-raphism and 31 patients with cold urticaria) for a period of three months. Cold urticaria and symptomatic dermographism are different forms of inducible urticaria. Patients with cold urticaria, for instance, cannot go swimming in the sea without risking an allergic reaction that may lead to shock. Similarly, they cannot hold items colder than room temperature.

In patients with symptomatic dermogra-phism, even gentle friction, such as that caused by clothing or physical contact, can result in severe itching. People affected by the disorder often experience a reduced quality of life, and are forced to make adjustments to both their social and working lives. In order to test the efficacy of treatment, researchers used objec-tive measurement techniques to determine

provocation threshold values for all study par-ticipants. Initial measurements were carried out prior to the first administration of the drug. Once the second dose had been administered, measurements were repeated at four-weekly intervals, followed by a final measurement two weeks after the final dose.

“After being appreciated by Mukesh Chhabra in the NDTV’s show ‘Ticket to Bollywood’, the next day I got a call from him say-ing Imtiaz Ali wants to meet me. Then Imtiaz gave me a few lines and I was sitting with him in his car.” “Within a day, I was in for the project. Working with a director like Imtiaz Ali for my first break was very surreal for me,” Raviza said in an interview on Saturday.

“Working with him gave me a lot of confidence as an actor and it taught me a lot as far as my craft of film-making is concerned,” she added.

Raviza will soon make her Bol-lywood debut with Srijit Mukherji’s directorial “Begum Jaan”. “When Mukesh showed my short film to Srijit during selection for ‘Begum Jaan’, I was selected immediately without much effort,” she said. Talking about working with actress Vidya Balan in the film, Raviza said,

“Working with Vidya was very

special. This is my first film and working with Vidya in my first movie... was a privilege for me as an actor.”

“Vidya is not just an amazing and a powerful actress, but at the same time she is so humble and sweet that I connected with her on a different level altogether.” In the film, the budding actress plays Lata.

“She is a Rajasthani widow who ends up working in Begum Jaan’s brothel. It is the gritty story of sex workers set in the Independence era who fight for their own rights,” Raviza said. “Nepotism does exist in the industry, but as an actor you can’t crib about it all the time. If an actor really knows how to act and is versatile enough, then nobody can throw them out...”

Debuting in Imtiaz Ali’s

film ‘surreal’ for RavizaDirector SS Rajamouli’s social media account on Twitter garnered three

million followers yesterday. The “Baahubali” series helmer has thanked fans for treating him as their family member.

“Three million hearts... You loved me, praised me, supported me, criticised me, helped me, enlightened me, treated me as your family. Thank you,” the 43-year-old tweeted yesterday.

In another tweet, he posted: “For those who like, for those who dislike. Please be who you are...I will be who I am.” He is also “very excited” for the Tamil audio

release of his forthcoming film “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”. The first part - “Baahubali: The Begin-ning” was also re-released in Hindi on April 7 by filmmaker Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

click pictures with every fan.The “Kabali” actor was sup-

posed to meet his fans here between April 12 and 16. “It’s time consuming and difficult to take pictures with each fan. In future, we plan to have meetings in every district such that fans can take individual pictures without much hassle,” Rajinikanth, whose fan

following runs in the hundreds of thousands, said in a statement. Just last month, the actor clarified that his meeting with fans has no polit-ical agenda. “I’m meeting them (fans) because it has been a long time. There won’t be any political announcements,” he had said. On the career front, Rajinikanth is busy wrapping up the shooting of Tamil science-fiction action drama ace2.o”, a sequel to his own 2010 blockbuster “Enthiran”.

Actor Tom Cruise was spotted filming the sixth instalment of the popular “Mission: Impossible” franchise here.

The 54-year-old was seen at the Bercy district on Saturday morning, where he was commanding attention as on screen character Ethan Hunt, reports mirror.co.uk.

Dressed in a white, prison straitjacket, Cruise was forced to scale a rooftop surrounded by men wearing military gear. Cruise looked masculine as he filmed the dramatic scenes. At one point, a helicopter could be seen flying into view, which Cruise courageously ran towards as if to make a bold escape.

According to sources, the shot was filmed for several times to get a perfect take, mirror.co.uk reported.

Simon Cowell and TV host Sha-ron Osbourne have backed

“The X Factor” judge Mel B (pictured) after the singer filed for divorce from estranged husband and producer Stephen Belafonte three weeks ago.

Cowell gushed about how “incredible” Mel B was during the time of her messy split while she made claims of domestic abuse against Belafonte, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“Yes, she’s under pressure, but I think she’s in a good place,” Cow-ell told The Sun newspaper. Cowell revealed that he and Mel B “talked a lot” about her returning to work.

“It really made me think about her as a person, what she’s achieved as a working mum and how she’s managed to balance eve-rything,” Cowell said. Meanwhile, Osbourne opened up about how three years ago Mel B missed a day of filming for “The X Factor” finale after she was hospitalised.

“In the situation that she’s been in for 10 years, it’s not just physi-cal, it’s mental abuse too,” Osbourne said on “The Talk” show.

“Three years ago, in the final two days of ‘The X Factor’, she didn’t make the first day and she was in the hospital. And it was reported in all the papers that said ‘allegedly’

she’s been beaten by her husband. “And she came back for the final day and she had a black eye and bruis-ing everywhere, but she made the final,” Osbourne added.

Singer Janet Jackson, who gave birth to her first child in January, has split from

husband Wissam Al Mana, say sources.

While one source said the split is amicable and the cou-ple will co-parent their son, others said trouble had been brewing for months, reports pagesix.com.

“She thought he had become too controlling during the preg-nancy and she had already allowed him to dictate her appearance and even the way she performed at concerts,” said the source who works closely with the couple. Jackson also resented the reclusiveness of her husband, who rarely met with her friends or family.

Actress Sofia Vergara, who will next be seen as a ruthless agent in upcom-

ing thriller film “Bent”, was spotted filming a racy scene with her co-star Karl Urban here.

In some photographs, Ver-gara was spotted with just a bedsheet wrapped around her as she shot a racy scene with Urban on a balcony, reports dailymail.co.uk. Urban, meanwhile, was

seen topless while wearing a pair of white boxers to film the scene. Vergara later shared a photograph from the film’s set on Instagram, which she captioned “Last night shooting in Rome”.

“Bent” tells the story of shamed detective Danny Gal-lagher, played by Urban, who plans to seek revenge after he was framed for killing his partner.

A roughly 650-metre near-Earth asteroid discovered nearly three years ago will

fly safely past Earth on April 19, Nasa has said.

The space rock is set to go past Earth at a distance of about 1.8 mil-lion km or about 4.6 times the distance from Earth to the moon.

Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, the upcoming approach will be “very close” for an asteroid of this size.

The asteroid, known as 2014 JO25, was discovered in May 2014 by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona -- a project of Nasa’s NEO (near-Earth object) Observations Programme in collaboration with the Univer-sity of Arizona.

The surface of the asteroid is about twice as reflective as that of

the moon, according to the scien-tists. The asteroid will approach Earth from the direction of the Sun and will become visible in the night sky after April 19.

It is predicted to brighten to about magnitude 11, when it could be visible in small optical telescopes

for one or two nights before it fades as the distance from Earth rapidly increases.

“Small asteroids pass within this distance of Earth several times each week but this upcoming close approach is the closest by any known asteroid of this size, or

larger, since asteroid Toutatis, a five-kilometre asteroid, which approached within about four lunar distances in September 2004,” Nasa said in a statement on Friday.

The encounter on April 19 is the closest this asteroid has come to Earth for at least the last 400 years and will be its closest approach for at least the next 500 years.

The next known encounter of an asteroid of comparable size will occur in 2027 when the 800-meter-wide asteroid 1999 AN10 will fly by at one lunar distance, about 380,000km. The April 19 encoun-ter provides an outstanding opportunity to study this asteroid and astronomers plan to observe it with telescopes around the world to learn as much about it as possi-ble. Also on April 19, the comet PanSTARRS (C/2015 ER61) will make its closest approach to Earth, at a very safe distance of 175 mil-lion km, Nasa said.

A week after Microsoft announced its Windows 10 Creators Update, the com-

pany introduced new privacy tools that will offer customers more transparency and control.

According to a post by Terry Myerson, Executive Vice-Presi-dent of Windows and Devices group (WDG) and Marisa Rogers, WDG Privacy Officer, the updates will have three new things that will empower customers to be more informed about their privacy in Windows 10.

“With all these new built-in innovations, we hope it will inspire you to choose Windows to be the place you love to create and play. And yet one of our most important improvements in the Creators Update is a set of privacy enhancements that will be mostly behind the scenes,” the post read.

The company is updating the

Microsoft privacy statement to include more information about the privacy enhancements in the Creators Update as well as share more detail about the data we col-lect and use to support new features offered in this update.

This information will be avail-able to users in a layered manner online, allowing them to progres-sively explore more information about your privacy choices with Windows 10.

The company will now pub-lish more information about the data it collects. “Our commitment to you is that we only collect data at the Basic level that is necessary

Industrial solutions company Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) launched a software for industrial sites that protects facilities against emerging USB-borne threats. Honeywell’s new Secure Media Exchange

(SMX) secures facilities without the need for complex procedures or restric-tions that impact operations or industrial personnel. Malware spread through USB devices was the second leading threat to industrial control systems in 2016, the company said in a statement. “Many employees in industries rely on USB-removable media to get their jobs done. Plants need solutions that let people work efficiently, but also don’t compro-mise cyber security and, with it, industrial safety,” said Eric Knapp, Cyber Security chief engineer, HPS. Currently, many plants either ban USBs which is difficult to enforce and significantly reduces productivity.
