Bull client success showing outstanding quality beef

using DSK genetics

We would like to invite & welcome all beef breeders to inspect the outstanding industry focussed Angus & Charolais sires that we have to go under the hammer at our 26th Annual on property bull sale on the 15th of August at Borah Station, Rocky Glen.

The aim for over 3 decades of DSK breeding has been to produce high performing & high yielding cattle with quality carcase, good skin & hair, easy doing ability.

We place strong emphasis on fertility with a rigid cull on empty females, believing it is the No.1 profit driver in a beef production system.

Carcase with quality is the aim at DSK. 100% MSA compliance in recent consignments of purebred steers & heifers with an index score averaging over 62 justifies this.

A DSK Angus steer was Champion Taste Test carcase in the purebred steer & carcase competition at Syd-ney Royal this year at just 7 ½ months old. Marble score 3. He was sired by Young Dale Xcaliber who is again the sire of many of our better bulls offered in this sale draft.

A DSK Charolais steer with a marble score 3 won his class in the Taste Test & was sired by ANC Kind who also has top of the draft sons on offer this year.

DSK had 3 of the top 5 marble scores and won 3 taste test classes at the Sydney carcase show this year.

In the past we have received endorsement for our breeding program with many major awards, gold medals & championsips for individual carcases, pens of carcases, yields & weight gains at most major com-petitions & feedlot trials.

We held concerns of the narrowing gene pool with mainstream Angus due to strong AI use of similarly

bred sires, so we made the decision to seek outcross genetics from Western Canada finding donor cows that suited our herd objectives & flush sires to com-plement their strengths. We now have many females through the breeding herd that are performing well with sons seen at the top end of the sale draft.

We now have highly efficient cows that maintain pro-duction even in harsh conditions & continue to wean heavy calves ready to go into any market whenever targeted to do so. Our calving ease is excellent & we rarely assist even first calvers & only check the calv-ing paddock once a day to record new calves.

This year’s draft of Angus & Charolais are an out-standing line-up with a reduced offering due to sea-sonal conditions but showing a consistent type of ro-bust and strong muscled bulls across the entire draft.

Although the bulls have not had pasture to graze, they have been ration fed daily & never been in a feed lot or on self feeders.

The longevity & welfare of the bulls are very important to us & we take pride in client reports of bulls working past 10 years of age & proving themselves by breed-ing easy & returning top dollar progeny.

If you can’t make it on sale day, AuctionsPlus will once again be on hand or phone bidding will be available by arrangment with one of our amazing local livestock agents.

For more information contact selling agents; Scott Cooper of Landmark Gunnedah on 0427 674 411 or Sam Plevey of Purtle Plevey Agencies on 0427 856 223. Auctioneer is Peter Godbolt of Landmark Stud-stock & his contact is 0457 591 929

Safe travels wherever you may be headed & let’s all hope for an end to this misery that is drought.

DSK CharolaisIt is with great pride & pleasure that we present this year’s draft of Charolais sires which we believe are the superior draft of sires we have put forward to date. Al-though a reduced number due to the ongoing drought, we invite your inspection of this good run of bulls. The aim of our Charolais program is to maintain high performance & extra yield that the Charolais breed has built it’s popularity in Australia on, while improving fattening ability, maternal traits including calving ease, & fertility.Early on we used bulls from the world renowned LT herd for high maternal traits, then for muscle content & finishing ability we used Moongool Yokel & Moongool Encore. In recent times our main sires have been Tem-ana Golden Logie and DSK Kappa K25 who are making a major impact on our herd and taking us to greater heights in Charolais breeding.New addition (in partnership again with Moongool), ANC Kind K155F is now proving himself to be an ex-cellent addition to the sire battery with his first prog-eny showing great muscle, softness, structure & tem-perament in an easy calving package. His first son ever shown was Senior & Grand Champion at the recent Charolais National showcase.Gold Logie has really set the bar high with his progeny excelling in the show ring and daughters breeding well. Gold Logie is the only bull in the Charolais breed to sire both Junior and Senior Champion bulls at 2 Royal shows with different animals. He achieved this at Bris-

bane Royal 2016 and Sydney Royal 2018. At Brisbane Royal 2017, Moongool Charolais (whom we share Gold Logie with) bred a Logie daughter who was the dam of the Junior Champion Female and we showed a Logie son for Reserve Junior Champion.Gold Logie has sired the Supreme Champion at the Charolais National Showcase both in 2016 & 2018 both with DSK bred full ET brothers. This year he added to his progeny awards with the Reserve Senior Champion bull, DSK TGL Nockup N55E & Reserve Junior Cham-pion female, DSK TGL Quoin P70E. Gold Logie is a big, magnificent, quiet natured sire who has been ad-mired by everyone who sees him. Only one son in the sale this year as this drop was Moongool’s turn with the big guy while we had a crack with ANC Kind.DSK PGRM Kappa K25E is a clean polled SVY Pilgrim son out of our Grand Champion Sydney Royal cow, Venturon Gorgeous G8 that we purchased as a heifer. We decided to use Kappa due to his high maternal ped-igree, his extremely easy finishing ability, depth of side & girth, wide stance and great muscle shape, that he showed from a young age. He has a great temperament too. His draft of bulls this year have loads of commer-cial focus being moderate framed with good skin and hair type and big scrotal. A real soft powerhouse of beef is Lot 19 who is a real standout in his contemporaries & from a top Gold Logie, Wendy female. We believe Kap-pa females are going to excel with the high maternal traits from the Gorgeous & Pilgrim lines.

This is what our paddocks used to look like.

DSK AngusAs we work through the constant search for new & greater genetics to keep the Angus herd within sight of the ever changing & (fad) filled world that is Angus stud breeding, we look at the bulls that we have lined up for your inspection again this year & feel proud of our de-cisions. The bulls are big, robust, clean skinned, deep sided, wide ribbed, long bodied, clean shouldered, good jawed & strong headed. They are sound made but above all else they have a powerful muscle pattern & shape that is not often seen in Angus today. The DSK cows are hard workers that can maintain themselves in tough times that we seem to see so often. They go back in calf when asked & raise good strong heavy weaners. What more could you ask. Our breed-ing direction has seen us go very different ways to a lot of herds in Australia & even around the world. We pride ourselves in the fact that we have found our type of cattle by searching long & hard, doing a lot of road & paddock miles across Australia & Canada while keep-ing ourselves unique to our proven breeding program.Remitall Rachis is a Canadian sire & has been a true all around sire for us with great sons selling to studs & daughters producing top sire prospects as well. His cows milk well with great teat & udder shape & body depth, length & width. The efficiency & softness of his progeny stand us in very good stead to withstand these tough seasons & the temperament on all his progeny is exceptional. A bull that has seen us mature into the stud we are today.

SVF Hi Road was another great old sire that bred daugh-ters that we are still in awe of today. The greatest ani-mals that we have bred to date have come from Hi Road daughters & with that in mind we sourced some semen & flushed a daughter of the great Three Trees Anita to have sons & daughters working well here again today. We kept a son (DSK M11) to use on heifers as he was small born but he & his full brother were the heaviest of the weaner bulls for their drop.Young Dale Xcaliber is another Canadian sire to have made a huge impact on the DSK herd. We originally sought out this bull as we couldn’t get to see a son of his that was on the semen market. After viewing the old bull we made the decision to bring in as much semen into Australia as was available. His progeny have that added wow factor of being big, robust, heavy muscled cattle. They are great on their feet and legs with pow-er oozing but calveing small, as in heifer calving small. His daughters are working well in what has been our worst season ever. He has proven his easy doing ability & marbling ability in one of his sons being awarded the Grand Champion Taste Test award for the Sydney Royal carcase competition & marble score 3 at 7 1/2 months.DSK Kracker K21 that we kept for his immense spring of rib & huge ema along with beautiful length of spine & neck extension. Also the fact that we rarely get a Panda son or daughter that doesn’t produce outstanding prog-eny. Kracker is no exception with some real outstanding sires in the draft. Big, robust & heavy.

Ohh the memories. Photos taken in 2012. Not even a great year.

Looking After Your New Bull & How Hard Should He Work?An important understanding of bull management.

This year it is more important than ever to care for your new bull. He will have come from a mob that is well fed with a complete nutritional balance. Your bulls will con-tinue to grow and develop up to 4 years of age and as such require a diet to suit. Normally good pasture is more than adequate but with most areas having little or no pasture you will have to maintain his dietary needs to continue to keep his strength, fertility and growth at adequate levels. If you let your young bull crash too far he is in danger of serious and long lasting damage to his internal organs. Keeping up his essential mineral and vitamin intake is very important so he can utilize what dry feed is available. Ad lib supplement licks or blocks will do this.

Taking care of your new bull after purchase should be viewed as caring for your future genetic and financial investment. How you care for your bull in his first season can affect the long term contribution that your new genetic package will make for your herd. You will find all the pre sale feeding and health information on these sale bulls in this cat-alogue. Your DSK bull is fully checked, vaccinated and ready to go to work for you. But do you know just how much work he should be able to handle?

Bulls have different maturity stages but as a gen-eral rule, DSK bulls are later developers and will continue to grow well into their 3rd year of age. While a bull is still growing and developing and at the same time serving cows and maybe fighting for dominance in a multiple joining sit-uation, he is using much more energy than a bull that has already matured. It is very important to make sure that your new bull in his first season is not overworked and underfed. This will not only affect his ability to serve cows and produce live semen, but it will have a major impact on his growth pattern to maturity which can cost you big bucks when you go to trade that bull in at the end of his working life and sell him by the kilo.

Take your bull home and settle him in for a few days with a few quiet pregnant cows, then either introduce him into his joining mob or settle him into the sires paddock. If you put him into a group of older bulls, he will be at the very bottom of the pecking order and be in danger of serious injury before you have even used him. Make sure that this paddock is large enough that bulls can retire to their own corners when they feel like they have had enough fighting. Most bulls know when it is advisable to leave a losing bat-tle, but they need somewhere to run to. We advise that you insure your new bull for at least the first season in case of injury.

At DSK we recommend the use of single sire mating as a means of reducing injury to your bulls and also a great way of sire identifying your cattle to know which sire lines are doing the best job for your operation. Many feedlotters and prime cattle buyers prefer cattle that are sire identified. also keep your joining season short and compact. It is important that you keep mobs in a paddock that a single bull can cover, ie, he can see, smell or hear what is happening in his paddock so he doesn’t miss cycling cows in small groups.

It is a good idea to have a single watering point per paddock, this keeps the mob together and gives your bull easy access to cycling groups of cows.

This situation can also keep your joining season short and compact. It is important that you keep mobs in a pad-dock that a single bull can cover, ie, he can see, smell or hear what is happening in his paddock so he doesn’t miss cycling cows in small groups. It is a good idea to have a single water-ing point per paddock, this keeps the mob together and gives your bull easy access to cycling groups of cows.

Unfortunately with single sire mating you run the risk of unforseen infertility in your bulls. It is most important to use bulls that have been semen tested to check for % of live sperm & imperfections, including your older bulls, and make sure that both bulls and females have had all the neces-sary health vaccinations and are in a condition good enough to be able to fall pregnant while milking for a calf. Check your bull at least twice a week for any lameness or swelling around the sheath or testicles and it is a good idea to try and catch your bull mating a cow to check for penis damage or abnormal serving problems such as “corkscrew penis” where the penis is twisted making mating much more difficult if not impossible. The Australian Association of Cattle Veteri-narians defines a normal, fertile bull as “expected to get 90% of 50 normal, cycling, disease free females pregnant within 9 weeks, and 60% of these should become pregnant in the first three weeks of joining.” This expectation would apply to 2 year old bulls but not to younger bulls. Mating loads of 25 to 30 females with a frame score that the bull can easily mount are recommended for yearling bulls in a smaller paddock with good feed and water. Try and cut their joining season down to 6 or 8 weeks and pull them out into a good nutrition paddock or hand feed them to allow them to recover body condition and maintain strong growth. The condition of younger bulls is critical for their sperm production and it is recommended that they not be allowed to drop in condition below a fat score 3 during service.

We recommend strongly that you have a backup bull in case of injury or infertility, allow yourself an extra bull in your sire line up. You may even find that lessening your joining mobs in a few cases allows you to have that extra bull out working each season but doesn’t over work a few of your bulls so that you can then use one or more of these as a back-up bull if you find you need it.

Injury and illness can strike a bull at any time and while most times this can be managed quickly and with com-plete recovery it is important that whatever is holding your bull back from maximum workload be dealt with straight away. Not only can it be the difference between recovery and total loss but it is also a factor in how quickly your bull gets his mob in calf and that effects the producer bottom line.

We can not stress enough the importance of regularly checking your bulls before, during and after joining to keep the health of your investment in top shape to maintain future herd development and financial success.

RECESSIVE GENETIC CONDITIONS

INFORMATION FOR BULL BUYERS This is information for bull buyers about the recessive genetic conditions, Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Developmental Duplications (DD). Putting undesirable Genetic Recessive Conditions in perspective

All animals, including humans, carry single copies (alleles) of undesirable or “broken” genes. In single copy form, these undesirable alleles usually cause no harm to the individual. But when animals carry 2 copies of certain undesirable or “broken” alleles it often results in bad consequences. Advances in genomics have facilitated the development of accurate diagnostic tests to enable the identification and management of numerous undesirable or “broken” genes. Angus Australia is proactive in providing its members and their clients with relevant tools and information to assist them in the management of known undesirable genes and our members are leading the industry in their use of this technology.

Key point: With today’s DNA tools undesirable genetic conditions can be managed!

What are AM, NH, CA and DD? AM, NH, CA and DD are all recessive conditions caused by “broken” alleles within the DNA of individual animals. When a calf inherits 2 copies of the AM or NH alleles their development is so adversely affected that they will be still-born. In other cases, such as CA and DD, calves carrying 2 copies of the broken allele may reach full-term. In such cases the animal may either appear relatively normal, or show physical symptoms that affect their health and/or performance.

Key point: The number of reported observations of AM, NH, CA and DD calves is very low and there is certainly no need for panic.

How are the conditions inherited? Research in the U.S. and Australia indicates that AM, NH, CA and DD are simply inherited recessive conditions. This means that a single gene (or pair of alleles) controls the condition. For this mode of inheritance two copies of the undesirable allele need to be present before the condition is seen; in which case you may get an abnormal calf. A more common example of a trait with a simple recessive pattern of inheritance is black and red coat colour. Animals with only one copy of the undesirable allele (and one copy of the normal form of the allele) appear normal and are known as “carriers”. What happens when carriers are mated to other animals? Carriers, will on average, pass the undesirable allele to a random half (50 %) of their progeny. When a carrier bull and carrier cow is mated, there is a 25% chance that the resultant calf will inherit two normal alleles, a 50% chance that the mating will result in a carrier (i.e. with just 1 copy of the undesirable allele, and a 25% chance that the calf will inherit two copies of the undesirable gene. If animals tested free of the undesirable gene are mated to carrier animals the condition will not be expressed at all. All calves will appear normal, but approximately half (50%) could be expected to be carriers.

Key point: For the condition to be expressed the undesirable gene needs to be present on both sides of the pedigree and both the sire and dam need to be a carrier.

How is the genetic status of animals reported? DNA-based diagnostic tests have been developed which can be used to determine whether an individual animal is either a carrier or free of the alleles resulting in AM, NH, CA or DD. Angus Australia uses advanced software to calculate the probability of (untested) animals to being carriers of AM, NH, CA or DD. The software uses the test results of any relatives in the calculations and the probabilities may change as new results for additional animals become available. The genetic status of animals is being reported using five categories:

AMF Tested AM free

AMFU Based on pedigree AM free – Animal has not been tested

AM__% __% probability the animal is an AM carrier

AMC Tested AM-Carrier

AMA AM-Affected For NH, CA and DD, simply replace AM in the above table with NH, CA or DD. Registration certificates and the Angus Australia web-database display these codes. This information is displayed on the animal details page and can be accessed by conducting an “Animal Search” from the Angus Australia website or looking up individual animals listed in a sale catalogue.

Key point: The genetic status of an animal is subject to change and will be re- analysed and adjusted each week as DNA test results of relatives are received.

Implications for Commercial Producers Your decision on the importance of the genetic condition status of replacement bulls should depend on the genetics of your cow herd (which bulls you previously used) and whether some female progeny will be retained or sold as breeders. Most Angus breeders are proactive and transparent in managing known genetic conditions, endeavouring to provide the best information available. The greatest risk to the commercial sector from undesirable genetic recessive conditions comes from unregistered bulls with unknown genetic background. The genetic condition testing that Angus Australia seedstock producers are investing in provides buyers of registered Angus bulls with unmatched quality assurance. For further information contact Angus Australia’s Breed Development and Innovation Manager at (02) 6773 4602.

Parent Verification Suffixes The animals listed within this catalogue including its pedigree, are displaying a Parent Verifica-tion Suffix which indicates the DNA parent verification status that has been conducted on the animal. The Parent Verification Suffixes that will appear at the end of each animal’s name are as follows:

PV: both parents have been verified by DNA

SV: the sire has been verified by DNA

DV: the dam has been verified by DNA

#: DNA verification has not yet been conducted

E: DNA verification has iden-tified that the sire and/or dam may possibly be incorrect, but this cannot be confirmed con-clusively.

UNDERSTANDING ANGUS BREEDPLAN EBVsWhat is Angus BREEDPLAN? Angus BREEDPLAN is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus influenced beef cat-tle. Angus BREEDPLAN uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility). Angus BREEDPLAN includes pedigree, performance and genom-ic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand. Angus BREEDPLAN analyses are conducted by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), using software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England. Ongoing BREEDPLAN research and development is supported by Meat and Livestock Australia. What is an EBV? An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values). Using EBVs to Compare the Genetics of Two Animals Angus BREEDPLAN EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected differ-ence equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (e.g. they are joined to the same animal/s). For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10 kg heavier

at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40 kg (i.e. 20 kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics). Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400 kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (i.e. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics). Using EBVs to Benchmark an Animal’s Genetics with the Breed EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics rel-ative to the genetics of other Angus or Angus infused animals in Australia and New Zealand. To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus ani-mals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to: ◆ the breed average EBV ◆ the percentile table The current breed average EBV and percentile table is provided in these explanatory notes. Considering Accuracy An accuracy value is published in association with each EBV, which is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV. EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50- 74% as of medium accuracy, 75-90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy. Description of Angus BREEDPLAN EBVs This is also applicable to Charolais BREEDPLAN within the Charolais database only.

Comments: Moderate birth, explosive growth, lots of muscle and width of frame. We were attracted to this sire by the depth of side and extra butt shape in his progeny. Sons have sold to $147,000 at Young Dale in Canada and in 2016 sons won the prestigious Car Load Pen of Bulls at the Denver Stock Show. DSK sons have shown well at Sydney Royal with 2 sons winning strong classes and DSK M63 being awarded the Reserve Senior Champion Angus this year. Daughters are breeding well and milking well on good udders. Calves have all been born very easy to date. A 7 1/2 mth old steer of ours showed just how wrong ebv’s can be at times with a marble score of 3, 2nd highest of 232 steers & Grand Champion Virtual Taste Test. High muscle capacity with easy finishing. Perfect for feeder steer production.

Comments: A super sire who does it all. Sons have topped our sale consistently since we started using him & his daughters are top matrons of the breed & excelling here at DSK. Sons have sold to a top of $26,000 & daughters to a top of $16,000. We continue to use this great bull as the demand for his sons continues & for so many great commercial attributes instilled into his daughters. Great skin, hair, overall length, depth of side & flank along with width of hip & rib. His daughters are easy keeping, big milking with beautiful udder & teat shape. The temperament of his progeny is amazing. He continues to make his mark for us & will go on to be one of the major influence sires in the DSK herd.

Comments: K21 is a high performing, strong topline, larger framed bull with an excellent strong sires head. Being from our proven donor W9 who is a daughter from our esteemed Panda cow family. Sired by Sitz Upward who sires muscular cattle which we appreciate and seek in our program. K21 is producing high performance, well muscled progeny of outstanding type & length. We unfortunately lost him due to injury but will keep using him as an AI sire for his much desired attributes.

Comments: Owned in partnership with Moongool stud and breeding exceptional progeny. They have excelled in both the show ring and the sale ring. His daughters calve out well with good udders. Logie is a big, magnificent, quiet natured sire who has been admired by everyone who sees him. He is the only bull in the Charolais breed to sire both the Junior and Senior Champions at 2 Royal shows. Brisbane Royal 2016 and Sydney Royal 2018.

Comments: Purchased for $18,000 in partnership with Moongool to support our other shared sire Gold Logie. We have not been disappointed. He was the heaviest bull in the ANC sale with a good smooth muscle pattern with a great skin & hair. He is putting all these attributes into his progeny as well as being born easy & performing very well. First progeny shown with the heaviest bull in his class & was Grand Champion Bull at the recent Charolais National Showcase. Kind progeny also won the Sires Progeny class against strong competition. Kind has been a revelation with some outstanding weaners at Moongool this year also. He sired our Sydney show steer who was placed 2nd live in a large class of 32 & on the hook won the taste test with a marble score of 3.

Comments: We leased 3 donors & flushed them to 170F on the basis of the bull pictured. After visiting the Fleury herd, we wanted to bring semen back to Australia in 23B but couldn’t arrange it, so we went about making more of them. This draft are the first full siblings. We are yet to finalise the necessary paperwork required to fully register him in the Australian Angus herdbook but do not see that to be a much longer wait. Our friends at Fleury Angus in Saskatchewan are trying to find a current owner to sign off on an authorisatin form. He is fully registered in the Canadian Herd book with DNA completed. His progeny show great style, length & depth with a great outlook about them
