AAE Special Committee on Endodontic Education

For a second year, Dr. Bill Johnson, Department of Endodontics, has been appointed chair of the Ameri-can Association of Endodontists (AAE) Special Commit-tee on Endodontic Education. Last year, the committee developed a white pa-per focusing on standards for endodontics diagnosis, treatment planning and prognosis. This year, the com-mittee’s focus will be on nonsurgical root canal treatment.

The AAE is committed to enhancing the quality of patient care and defining the competency standards of endodontic care that is expected and delivered by general dentists and specialists.

She was given the plaque in recognition of her dedication, support and commitment to the predoctoral students. Cathy Solow has retired after working at the College of Dentistry since 2009. Cynthia Lo, Mentored by Dr. Azeez Butali Receives First Place for her SSTP Poster

(Above): Cynthia Lo, an undergraduate student who is mentored by Dr. Azeez Butali, Dental Research and OPRM, received an award for best presentation during the Secondary School Training Program (SSTP) poster presentation on July 28. Her poster was first among 42 students from more than 11 countries who presented. Cynthia’s poster title was “Association of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) with Nonsyndromic Orofacial Clefts in African Populations.” Co-authors on her poster included T. Busch, S. Desai, M. Mohamed, J. Park, A. Torano, and Dr. Butali. The SSTP offers high school students the opportunity to conduct re-search under the guidance of faculty mentors in a research area of their choice. Eligible participants must have completed grade 10 or 11 by summer and demonstrate high ability or motivation in sci-ence, social science, and/or mathematics.

You are cordially invited to attend the Bridging the Gap: the axiUm Consortium Midyear Meeting, which will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, September 27-29, 2017.

which will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center September 27-29, 2017. We an-ticipate representatives from 40+ dental schools will attend, as well as 10 members of the Exan/axiUm team. College of Dentistry faculty and staff will be involved with the presentations.

The College of Dentistry will pay for your registration fee. Please contact your department’s primary

administrator, if you would like to register for the meeting. If departmental approval is obtained, please see your primary admin to register. The conference does NOT qualify for CE credit.

You must register so there will be adequate food for attendees. To register and check out the agen-da, go to www.dentistry.uiowa.edu/dental-consortiums.

Although most dental schools use axiUm, the meeting will concentrate on processes vs. the software used.

A separate Revenue Cycle Management course will be given for alumni and/or their office staff on Friday, September 29, from 7:30-noon, at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville. Members of the CoD business office will give presentations illustrating best practices for successful revenue cycle management.

From July 31-August 4, the Filling Station will be open 7:30-2:00 pm. From August 7-14, the Filling Station will be open 7:30-3:00 pm on Monday-Friday. From August 15-18, the Filling Station will be open 7:30-4:00 Tuesday-Thursday and 7:30-3:00 on Friday. The Filling Station will resume normal hours beginning August 21: 7:30-5:00 Monday-Thursday and 7:30-3:00 on Fridays.

The Carver College of Medicine Office, Office of Faculty Affairs and Development is pleased to announce a partnership with the Research Development Office at the University of Iowa. They will be offering a grant writing workshop on October 24. Dr. M.S. (Peg) AtKisson earned a PhD in neuroscience from Tufts University but has spent most of the last 16 years thinking about grant applications. In 2001, she founded the grant and research development support office at Tufts University, where she and her team helps secure $140,000,000 in grant funding through 2010. She also worked for Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops from 2009-2016, providing training in grantsmanship and direct support for individual applicants.
