still have the most important or essential systems available withpropulsion, navigation, electrical production, and some o the
passenger accommodations and comort systems operational untilthe ship saely returns to port,” Baarman said. “It is a question o always keeping an alternative solution available.”
The IMO requires that a SRTP assessment be made during the designphase and that the resulting report be submitted to the authorities.Based on a 3D ship model designed in CATIA, the 3DS application orvirtual product design and part o the 3DEXPERIENCE Platorm,Deltamarin perorms this assessment by rendering out o order onesystem at a time, or example, a pipe route, and checking to see i the counterpart system still works.
“We used 3DVIA Composer to represent the results o eachassessment and the resulting presentations orm the ramework orthe support documentation that was submitted to the ship’s owner –P&O Ferries – or use by the crew,” Baarman explained. “The ship’screw can easily understand 3DVIA documentation, which is in 3D. Thisis essential in emergency situations when they need to quickly ndwhat valve to close or what pumps to start,” Baarman said.
3D – a competitive advantage3DVIA gives Deltamarin an opportunity to dierentiate its oeringrom that o its competitors. A fexible content authoring platorm,3DVIA Composer is capable o providing a complete package orDeltamarin customers that is comprised o 2D drawings, 3D models andall associated documentation. “Most customers expect 2D drawingsbecause that is what they are used to,” Esa Jokioinen, Manager,Concept and Development at Deltamarin, said. “While 2D drawings arestill mandatory, we have already had eedback rom our customerssaying that they appreciate the 3D aspect as well,” Jokioinen said.
Deltamarin – setting new standards with3DEXPERIENCE technologyDeltamarin is a company o rsts. In 1986, the rst 3D model or anengine room and piping was created in the naval design business. In 1994, it developed the rst 3D model or an entire ship. In 2005Deltamarin developed the rst 3D integrated model or a foatingproduction, storage and ofoading (FPSO) unit. And in 2012Deltamarin, along with shipowner P&O Ferries and the shipyard STXFinland, won the ShipPax award or their implementation o the saereturn to port (SRTP) procedures in two sister erries – the Spirit o Britain and the Spirit o France. A world rst .
“We were the naval architects or these two vessels,” Lei Baarman,Saety Engineer at Deltamarin Concept Development Department, explained. “From the very beginning o the design process, weincorporated the SRTP rules, as specied by the International MaritimeOrganization (IMO). Our role was to coordinate the SRTPimplementation with the shipyard responsible or building the vessel, and to develop the training scenarios and saety reerence manuals orthe ship’s crew. We relied on 3DVIA Composer, part o DassaultSystèmes’ (3DS) 3DEXPERIENCE Platorm, to develop a trainingapplication that walks the crew through the saety procedures so thatthey are prepared i and when a crisis situation occurs.”
Keeping the vessel operationalSRTP rules require that certain systems remain operational or a sae
return to port with basic services provided in the event a ship runsinto problems. “Systems should be designed and installed in such away that even i the ship loses certain compartments or spaces it will
ChallengeDeltamarin wanted to dierentiate itsel rom its competitors byoering innovative designs that are both cost eective andsustainable.
SolutionThe company uses Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCEtechnology, including CATIA or virtual product design and3DVIA or 3D documentation creation.
BeneftsWith the 3DExperience Platorm, Deltamarin develops cost-ecient and sustainable vessels, has improved communicationand collaboration with customers, and generates clearerdocumentation that helps customers to meet new maritime
regulations such as theSafe Return to Port
rules.
Whether in design or documentation, 3DS technology has enabled us to be more efcient and innovative, and to bring added value to our
customers. Through innovation, we hopto set new standards.

With over 20 years o marine design experience, Deltamarin is widelyrecognized or its ability to overcome complex design challenges.“Customers come to us when they have a challenging design taskand they need our expertise,” Jokioinen said. “In act, i it foats, weknow Deltamarin can design it.” A longtime user o CATIA,Deltamarin is especially good at designing uel-ecient vessels thatenable shipowners to sustainably cut operating costs. “This isillustrated with our new set o state o the art standard bulkerdesigns, which we designed using CATIA,” he said.
“As a matter o act, a vast majority o our design work, already in theconceptual phase, is done in 3D, which is something no one else on themarket is doing today,” Jokioinen said. “This dierence is a denitecompetitive advantage or us. For example, working in 3D is a big help
when the geometry is complex or when we need to optimize the waywe position the engine or various systems in the compartment o thevessel. Intererences are eliminated upstream and easibility is veriedbeore the ship contract is placed,” he said. “This considerably reducesrisks both or the shipowner as well as or the shipyard.”
Collaboration leads to better designsand satisfed customersDeltamarin places a great deal o importance on building close workingrelationships with its customers when developing a vessel. Goodcommunication ensures that the result is perectly aligned withcustomer expectations. “Our customers not only appreciate being anintegral part o the design process, but also that their participation isvalued and a necessary part o the product,” Jokioinen said. “And weeel that we get the best eedback this way. It is a win-win situation.”
3D is an integral part o Deltamarin’s eort to acilitatecommunication with customers. “The quality o our deliverables isimproved. By presenting our designs to our customers in 3D, the
product is better illustrated than i we were to use conventional 2Ddrawings only. It promotes and acilitates cooperation,” Jokioinensaid. “To be competitive, we not only need to do old things in a newway, but also to nd completely new ways o approaching the earlieststages o a ship’s design process using the advanced design toolswe have.”
Using the latest technologies or sophisticated 3D modeling anddocumentation rom the 3DEXPERIENCE Platorm has helped Deltamarinprovide its customers with designs optimized or cost eciency andsustainability. “Whether in design or documentation, 3DS technology hasenabled us to be more ecient and innovative, and to bring added value toour customers. Through innovation, we hope to set new standards,“ Jokioinen concluded. And to continue to be a company o rsts.
