ESSENTIAL QUESTION:What are the fundamentals of drawing that will help begin to build our drawing practice?
notes:
KNOWING YOUR TOOLS: Drawing Pencils- Drawing pencils come in
various numbers ranging from 6H - 8B.
- H stands for “hard” graphite.- B stands for “soft” graphite.
- The HARDER a graphite pencil is rated, the LIGHTER the pencil lines will appear.
- The SOFTER a graphite pencil is rated, the DARKER the pencil lines will appear.
LINE: The path of a moving point. - Types of Lines
- Contour Line- Blind Contour Line- Cross Contour Line- Gesture Drawing
VALUE: The lightness or darkness of a surface.
CONTOUR LINE: Simply, the outline of an object.
- The purpose of contour drawing is to emphasize the mass and volume of the subject rather than the detail; the focus is on the outlined shape of the subject and not the minor details (Some minor details are usually included.)
- Contour drawing is an essential technique in the field of art because it is a strong foundation for any drawing or painting; it can potentially modify a subject's’ form through variation within the lines.
BLIND CONTOUR LINE: A contour line drawing created when the artist does not look at their paper and does not pick up his/her pencil.
- This is an awesome warm-up exercise to begin building their drawing skills.
- It is a challenge, but no CHEATING!- The focus here is to start shifting your
brain to “see” like a drawer.
GESTURE LINE: A gesture line is a line drawn as part of a gesture drawing. Gesture drawings are quickly drawn human or animal forms that capture movement or motion.
CROSS CONTOUR LINE: A cross contour drawing contains parallel lines that run across the surface of an object (or radiate from a central point), such as those that appear on a topographical map or a digital wireframe.

SIMPLE SHAPES: can often be classified into basic geometric objects such as a point, a line, a curve, a plane, a plane figure (e.g. square or circle), or a solid figure (e.g. cube or sphere).
DEMO:Using Simple Shapes to draw complex objects.
IN YOUR BOOKLET:
Draw (AT LEAST) FOUR Complex Object Contour Drawings using the simple shape method.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:Can just the element of line show value?
notes:
Ways to show VALUE using LINE:
- Hatching: an artistic technique used to create value or shading effects by drawing (or painting or scribing) closely spaced parallel lines.
- Cross Hatching: Layers of hatching applied at different angles to create different textures and darker tones.
- BONUS: Contoured hatching: Hatching using curved lines to describe light and form of contours
- Stippling: A drawing technique where you apply tone and texture in small dots.
Question: Can just the element of line show value?
