These books will contain a whole heap of new material for you to include in yourexistinggamesandcampaigns–HuntingGroundscontainstwonewFactionsandoptionalSkinwalker Tribal Themes, new Hired Guns, Weapons (including Close Combatweapons!),Gear,ArcanePowers,andabrandnewBestiaryofNPCsfromthespiritworld.
As always, the bulk of these additions are entirelymodular and compatiblewith theDracula’sAmerica:ShadowsoftheWestrulebook–sofeelfreetousethenewmaterialyoulikeandleaveouttherest–they’llslotrightinalongsidethecorerules!
As you will hopefully have realised by now, playingDracula’s America is first andforemost about having fun telling great stories on the table-top – these expansionswilltakethistothenextlevelbyincludingnewlinkedscenariosthatyoucanplayinone-offgames,orfollowfromstarttofinishasanarrativecampaign.

WelcometoIndianTerritoryThe area known as ‘IndianTerritory’ encompasses awide region –much ofwhich hastraditionallybeensacredlandtotheNativeAmericantribeswhocallithome.
TheTreaty of Laramie had been in effect since before theCivilWar and the rise ofDracula – the tribes kept to their territory, and the US Government laid claim to thesurroundingareas.Aslongasthetribeswereleftinpeace,theywouldkeeptotheirlandandnevertroubletheGovernment.

THEBLACKHILLSA sacred land to the Sioux who dwell within the Indian Territory, the Black Hills aretechnically‘off-limits’tonon-NativeAmericanpeoples.
Unfortunately, theBlackHillsalsohideabundantnaturalresources–GeorgeCuster’sBlackHillsExpeditiondiscoveredgoldin theregion.Thoughtechnically inviolationofthe Treaty of Laramie, and therefore illegal, this fact was conveniently ignored byDracula’sresource-starvedgovernmentstrugglingtorebuildinthewakeoftheCivilWar,and by the hordes of desperate prospectors that flooded the area hoping tomake theirfortune.
TheNativeAmericanretributionforthesetransgressionswasoftenswiftandbrutal,butrather than driving the greedy hordes away itmerely invited equally brutal reprisals asnewspapersprintedincreasinglyluridtalesofthese‘unprovoked’attacks.
With the discovery of the valuableArcane fundamentknownas ‘Animus’, this tensesituation became a powder-keg, ready to explode into violence with the smallest ofsparks…
TheShadowDragonTong:AnimusDealer
CONVERGENCETheir sacred lands invaded and their treatywith theUSGovernment up in flames, theSiouxcouldonlywatchinhorrorastheirterritorywasviolatedbygreedyprospectors.
White Raven, spiritual leader of the Skinwalker Tribes and a Lakota Sioux himself,desperatelysoughtarefugeforhispeople.Hefoundit, in theotherrealmknownto theNativeAmericanpeoplesastheHuntingGrounds.
This realmof spirits couldbe reachedvia temporary ‘doors’ knownasConvergence,
foundwhere theHuntingGrounds overlappedwith the physical world. From here, theSkinwalker Tribes could start a new life away from the teeming hordes, regroup, andperhapsevenstrikeoutatthehatedrailroadsfromunexpecteddirections.Itwasperfect…
However, somethingwentawrywithWhiteRaven’s ritualandhe foundhecouldnotreliablycontrol thenumber, location,ordurationofConvergences– insomeplaces, theHunting Grounds were irrevocably meshed with our own plane, allowing creatures tofreelypassfromonetotheother(oftenunknowingly).
Itwas into one of these ‘doorways’ that a desperate gold prospector known as ZekeMathesonstumbled,onefatefuldayinlate1875andmadeadiscoverythatwouldchangehislife–andthefateoftheentireIndianTerritory–forever…
DEADWOODCITYSquattingprecariouslywithin theboundsof IndianTerritory,Deadwoodstarted lifeasasmallminingtownduringtheoriginalgoldrushintheBlackHills.
WiththediscoveryofConvergencesandAnimus,anewwaveofsettlersheadingWesttoseekabetterlifesawDeadwood’spopulationexplodeoutofallproportionasthetownswiftlybecamethethrivinghubofthelucrativeAnimustrade.
The brand new rail artery, known as the Deadwood Line, now carries Animus towealthybuyersbackEast,and the independentminingsettlementhasquicklybecomeasprawlingboomtownwhoseinhabitantsareproudtocallDeadwoodCity.
Yet for all its excitement andallure,DeadwoodCity is controlledby shadowy forceswhovieforpowerwithinitsdarkunderbellyofillegalAnimusdens,bawdy-houses,andkillers-for-hire…
THEHUNTINGGROUNDS‘TheHuntingGrounds’is infact thenamegivenbytheNativeAmericanpeoplestothespirit realm – that ethereal plane of existence which runs parallel to our own physicalrealm.
Otherculturesandtraditionshavetheirownnamesforthisgloomyplace–Purgatory,Hades,Valhalla– tosome, it isa‘stopping-off’pointonasoul’s journey to itsultimaterewardintheafterlife.Toothers,itisthefinaldestination.Theetherealnatureofthespiritrealmmeansthatitisallofthesethings–andmore…
ThespiritandphysicalrealmscoexistalongsideeachotherwithinthecosmicbalanceofNature,andeachplaysasvitalaroleinthenaturalorderofthingsastheother.Thespiritrealmcanbe imaginedasa ‘mirror’of thephysical–placesandpeoplesimultaneouslyexistinboth,thoughtheirincarnationwithintheHuntingGroundsisoftensubtlytwisted–those who have walked the twilight trails liken it to looking at objects as if fromunderwater,orthroughadesertheat-haze.
Occasionally, the two realms overlap in places where the dimensional ‘walls’ thatseparate them are weakest. These Convergences – as they are known to those withknowledgeofsuchthings–allowthetwoworldstointeract,andarethesourceofmanyacampfireghoststory!
When amortal creature dies, its spirit departs this plane and fades into theHuntingGrounds,whereitassumestheformmostpleasingtoitwhilstitwasalive.Formostfolks,thisisaspectralversionofitsoldphysicalbodyanditwillretainwhateverknowledgeandpersonalityitpossessedwhilealive,oftenre-enactingpastgloriesandrelivingoldhorrors–someunfortunatesoulsevenseemunawareofthefactthattheyarealreadydead!Some,however, may reveal their inner corruption upon assuming spirit form – becomingmonstrousspiritcreatures,suchasthebestialManitou.
TheHuntingGrounds,andallthespiritsthatdwellthere,areformedofetherealenergyknown as Animus that manifests in concentrated clouds of ectoplasm deep within theHuntingGrounds.Thissubstanceishighlysought-afterbythemanypopularspiritualistswho ply their trade across America (and indeed, the world), as well as less savourydabblers in theArcane arts – for it is rumoured that this ‘spirit energy’ can be used toempowerspellsandincantationsofallkindstoadangerousdegree.
Tomostignorantpeoplehowever,theHuntingGroundsandtheuntappedenergiestheycontain are nothing more than ghost stories or theological mysteries that they willunfortunatelyonlygettoexperiencewhentheirtimeonthismortalcoilisup…
ANIMUSTheArcanefundamentknownasAnimusisconcentratedspirit-energy,orectoplasm.Itisa hitherto-untapped source of great (though unpredictable) Arcane energy found onlywithintheHuntingGrounds.
Well-to-doArcanistsbackEastwillpayhandsomelyforeventhemerestportionofthisamazing substance, since it augments a user’s own Arcane power and even unlockspreviouslydormantpowers!Despite theoccasionalspectacularaccident, thedemandformoreAnimusinsuchrarefiedscholarlycirclesincreaseswitheachmonth.Ifthiswastheonlyeffectofthestuff,itwouldbeapotentenoughforce.However,thesubstance’seffectuponthosemortalswithnoArcanesensitivityhasseenitsworthincreasetwofold!
DistilledAnimusactsasapowerfulandwholly intoxicatingopiateupon theordinaryhumanmind–sendingthehaplessuser intoadreamlikestateofheightenedperceptionsandwakingvisions inwhich theyarerenderedutterly insensitive toallpain,doubt,andfear. Considering the living nightmare that is existencewithin Dracula’s America, it issmallwonderthattherearemanywhowouldseeksolaceintheembraceofAnimus…
Needless to say,where there is demand there are always thosewilling to supply– atleast,foraslongastheycanturnaprofitfromtheweaknessandsufferingofothers!Atfirst,thediscoveryofConvergencesawthousandsofdesperate,independent‘prospectors’rush to Indian Territory in search of their fortune, driven by tales of men and womenstrikingitrichintheHuntingGroundsoverthecourseofasingleday.
Naturally,thePowersThatBewerequicktopickupontheopportunitiesofferedbythis
amazingnewresource–Draculawas,ofcourse,concernedthatthediscoverymightmeanashiftinthebalanceofpowerifalargeenoughquantityofAnimusweretoendupinthehandsofhis rivals.To this end, itwasn’t longbefore theGovernment clampeddown–hard – on unsanctioned prospecting, and an ‘Animus tax’ was levied against thoseprospectorswhocouldaffordtopaytheexorbitantfeetoattaintheappropriatelicence.
AsAnimusflowsoutofIndianTerritorytosatisfytheclamouringmassesbackEast,itmustpassthroughDeadwoodCityviathenow-famous‘DeadwoodLine’.Thisnaturallymeans that Edward Crowley and his Crossroads Cult control the supply. A fact thatCrowleyusestoeffectivelyextorttheGovernment–theGrandMagisterplayingadeadlygameofveiledthreatandcounter-threatwithDracula;thetwowickedbeingscirclingeachotherlikehungrywolves,eachconstantlytestingtheother’sstrengthofwill.
Andyet,anewpowerwatchesthesetwoalphapredatorsfromtheillicitAnimusdenshiddendownthedarkalleysofDeadwood–apowerbroughtherebyCrowleyhimself–theShadowDragonTong.
OriginallyseenascheaplabourtospeedalongtheconstructionoftheDeadwoodLineat an incredible rate, the Chinese immigrant workers brought with them this mostmysterious criminalorganization– seemingly innocentmenandwomenwhoharbouredpowers over the spirit realm, and even some who could no longer be truly countedamongsttheliving!
Desperatetocompletehisrailway,CrowleyagreedtocedecontrolofhalfofDeadwood(thepoorerhalf,naturally!)totheShadowDragons,andfurthermorenottointerferewiththeTong’svarious‘enterprises’withintheirterritory.Itwasnotlongbeforeablackmarketin illegal Animuswas thriving in the dark underbelly of Deadwood – with the Tong’swealthandinfluencegrowingaccordingly.
Crowley’sdealwiththeleaderoftheTong–theshadowyfigureknownonlyasYanluo–may yet prove to be his undoing, for in his greed for theAnimus that he hopeswillacceleratehisGreatRitual,theGrandMagisterwasperhapslesscautiousthanheshouldhavebeen.ForoneaccustomedtosealingunspeakablepactswiththediabolicaldenizensoftheAbyss,Yanluomaywellbeonedevilwithwhomheshouldnothavedealt!

NEWGAMERULES
TheHuntingGroundsENTERINGTHEHUNTINGGROUNDS
YoumaydecidethatanyGameistotakeplacewithintheareaofaConvergence,wherethe barriers between the physical and spirit realms are at their weakest. The followingruleswillthenapply.
All models must start the game outside the Hunting Grounds in the physical realm,unlessotherwisestatedbyaScenarioorotherspecialrule.
• AnymodelthatActivatesonaredcard(DiamondsorHearts)maydeclaretheyaremovingintooroutoftheHuntingGroundsatthestartofthatActivation–thisisfree,anddoesnotuseupanAction!
• ASpirit-Walkermayenterorexit theHuntingGroundsat thestartorendofanyActivation as described above and regardless of the card used. However, theycannot do both in the same Activation. In addition, they may take one otherfriendlymodel(mountedmodelscountasasinglemodel) that is inContactwiththemalongfortherideifyouwish.
WheneveramodelleavestheHuntingGrounds,rollaD6:onarollof1,aSpiritCreatureNPChasfollowedthemthroughintothephysicalrealm–immediatelyrollontheSpiritCreature table to seewhat it is, thenplace itD6+1” away from themodel in a randomdirection–asalways,usecommonsensewhenplacingtheCreature!
BottleCheckscanbemadebyeligiblemodelsineitherrealmandtheresultswillaffectfriendlymodelsinbothrealms.
UnexpectedEventscanonlyaffectmodelsinthephysicalrealm.
SPIRITTOKENSWhile within the Hunting Grounds, a model or other game element receives a SpiritToken(suchasacolouredglassbead)toshowtheyarenolongerinthephysicalrealm.
AmodelwithaSpiritTokencannotusuallyaffectmodelswithoutaSpiritTokeninanyway–theydonotblocktheirmovement,LOS,andcannotattackthem.Thereverseisalsotrue.
Furthermore,amodelwithaSpiritTokencanonly interactwithothergameelementsthat are designated as also beingwithin theHuntingGrounds.Thismeans they are not
affectedbyroughterrainandcanfreelypassthroughsolidobjects,butcannotclimbawallorusestairsthatexistinthephysicalrealm,andcannotcontrolObjectivesorpickupLootunlesstheseelementsexistintheHuntingGrounds.
Thismeansyouneedtobecarefulaboutwhenyoushiftbetweenrealms–forexample,ifyourmodelisstandingonthesecondfloorofabuildinginthephysicalrealmandshiftsintotheHuntingGrounds,theywillimmediatelydrop‘through’thefloorandsowillcountasfalling– if indoubtas towhathappens, talk it throughbrieflywith theotherplayersandapplyalittlelogic!
Finally,amodelwithaSpiritTokencannever leave the table,even inScenarios thatallowforthis.
AmodelcanneverendaMove‘inside’solidterrainoranothermodel.Althoughtechnicallypossible,it’ssimpler(andfarlessmessy!)todisallowthisintheinterests
ofgameplay
LOSTINTHEHUNTINGGROUNDS!In a Campaign, models that fall as Casualties or Bottle Out while they are within theHuntingGroundsruntheriskofbeinglostwithinthisdismalrealm.Putsuchunfortunatemodelsofftooneside,separatefromyourotherCasualties.
AfterrollingforInjury(ifapplicable),thesemodelsmustscoreaSuccesson1GritDieormisstherestofthisCampaignPhase.
If successful, they immediately return to thephysical realmasdescribedabove.Onamaximumpossiblescore(e.g.8onaD8)theyalsoimmediatelygain+1EXPfromtheirexperiencesintheHuntingGrounds.
SUMMONINGINTHEHUNTINGGROUNDS(OPTIONALRULE)
The dimensional walls of the Hunting Grounds are thinner than those of the physicalrealm and are easily breached by the diabolical denizens of the Abyss. SummoningEntities is therefore a much more risky proposition within the spirit realm, with anincreasedchanceofangry,roguedemonsclawingtheirwayfromtheAbyssalplane!
WhenamodelattemptstoCasttheSummonArcanePowerwithintheHuntingGroundsandfails,thentheywillaccidentallySummonanAbyssalEntityoftheGritRank,3”awayfrom them in a random direction – with the appropriate rules below – instead of theintendedSummonedCreature.
AbyssalEntitiesSummonedinthiswayare‘rogue’,andareNPCsineveryrespect!
Forexample,aNoviceArcanistdeclares theywillattempt toSummonaMinorEntitywhilewithintheHuntingGroundsandfails;andsomistakenlySummonsanNPCFiend!

Though this is nothing new in recent weeks, what has everybody so agitated is thatamongst the lost party was amember of an incredibly wealthy family from back East(rumoured to be favourites of Dracula himself!). Their representatives arrived in townyesterday,andsince thenhavebeenmaking roundsofall thesaloons,making itknownthat theywillpayahandsome reward to the individualswhobrave the spirit realmandbringbacktheVIP.
Being braver (ormore foolhardy) thanmost, the Posses have struck out for the lastknown location of the lost expedition, little realising that something ancient andmalevolentisouthuntingaswell…
Set-Up
Before Deployment, place two Bystandermodels – plus one Bystander for each Possetakingpartinthegame–between4”and8”ofthecentreofthetable.ThesemodelsareLostintheHuntingGrounds.

White Raven, horrified at the threat he has unwittingly unleashed, has sent hismosttrusted warriors (and some unlikely allies) into the Hunting Grounds in a desperateattempt to disrupt the spell binding theSyphon before the spirit realm is drained of allenergyandthecosmicbalanceisirrevocablydamaged!
Yet even as thesedefenders ofOrder lay eyeson theSyphon, theybecomeawareofdarkshapesformingwithintheeyeofthemagicalstorm–AbyssalEntitiesfeedingofftherawpowergenerated fromtheplunderedessenceof theHuntingGrounds,as thechainsbindingthemintheirinfernalprisonbegintoloosenandthencrack!
Opposing them stand the fanatical, hooded ranks of the Cult chanting the forbiddenwordsthatwillmaintainthespell’s integrity.Aroundthemstandthosedeludedmenand
womenwhohavethrownintheirlotwithChaos,theirweaponsheldreadytodefendtheirnewallies.

Itwas not long before Arcanists and Animus-addicts throughout the world began tosuffer fromterriblenightmares inwhich tentaclesofshadowwrithedandamultitudeofalien eyes glared from the darkness of twisted dimensions beyond time and space.Doomsayersandapocalypticcultssprangupseeminglyovernightasawaveofmadnessand insanitybegan togrip thosesensitive tosuch things.Within thespaceof justa fewmonths,manyasylumsacrossAmericawereatfullcapacity.

Thisgloriousanarchylastedforseveralweeks,untilevenDeadwoodCityitselfseemedto writhe like a wounded beast and hellish creatures roamed at will in the streets andalleys.Even themysteriousShadow-DragonTongmelted away into the shadows in thefaceofthisterror.

The Abyssal hordes began to leave the physical realm, abruptly abandoning theirfootholdinthemortalplane.

IntheDeepSouthitwasdiscoveredthatmanypreviouslyunknown,submergedruinsofcyclopeanarchitecturehadrecentlyforcedtheirwayoutofthemurkinthedarkheartofthe bayou, and it was from these alien, weed-choked structures that the madness was
