DR. ROBERT J. GORDON

President and Vice-Chancellor University of Windsor

Dr. Robert Gordon’s term as the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Windsor was effective September 1, 2019. Prior to his appointment by the Board of Governors, Dr. Gordon served as Provost and Vice-President, Academic at Wilfrid Laurier University, and previously was Laurier’s Vice-President, Research.

Dr. Gordon is a recognized authority on environmental engineering issues related to climate change and water management, having held a Canada Research Chair in environmental resource management. Dr. Gordon has a proven background as a research champion and brings strengths in promoting academic excellence, while integrating teaching, research and community engagement to the University of Windsor.

Dr. Gordon has served in various academic and administrative capacities, including as Dean of Research at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College — now the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University — and headed the environmental management section of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, where he administered the Nova Scotia Environmental Farm Plan Program on behalf of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture; the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture; and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. He also served as an extension specialist through the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture.

Before joining Laurier, Dr. Gordon was Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) at the University of Guelph, where he led the largest agriculture and food faculty in Canada. Under his leadership, OAC was ranked first in Canada, fifth in North America and ninth globally in agriculture and food science.

During Dr. Gordon’s tenure at Laurier, he led the university’s development of a statement of free expression and also helped the university be recognized first among Canadian universities in research efficiency, and second in relative research funding growth.

Throughout his leadership roles, Dr. Gordon has also maintained a strong commitment to research and student mentorship. This has included publishing approximately 170 refereed journal articles, and supervising more than 60 graduate students, and eight post-doctoral fellows.

Dr. Gordon earned his Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering from McGill University and his PhD in Land Resource Science from the University of Guelph. Dr. Gordon has received the Premier's Award of Excellence from

the province of Nova Scotia and a number of other research and service-related awards and recognitions.

Installation of the President

After “O Canada,” The Chancellor will address the President-designate: “Do you, Robert Gordon,

pledge yourself to perform the duties of the President of the University of Windsor as prescribed by law

and by the statutes of the University, and do you promise to defend the rules and promote the welfare of

the University and members thereof?”

The President-designate will respond: “I do so pledge myself.”

The Chancellor will install the President with the following words: “In the name of the University of

Windsor I now install you, Robert Gordon, in the Office of President and Vice-Chancellor of the

university and I invest you with the authority and charge you with the responsibility pertaining to that

office.”

The placing of the Mace by the Mace-Bearer before the Chancellor signifies that Convocation has

commenced.

A Note on the Governor General of Canada's Academic Medals The prestigious Governor General of Canada's Academic Medal is awarded to the student who is considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic record in comparison to his or her graduating peers. The Silver medal is awarded to an undergraduate student at the Spring Convocation ceremony and the Gold medal is awarded to a graduate student at the Fall Convocation ceremony.
