Dear Friends, During the month of July, we naturally think of Independence Day as we celebrate the 4th with hot dogs and picnics and fireworks. Did you know that Presbyterians played an important role in the American Revolution? Here is an excerpt from The Presbyterian Historical Society’s website (www.history.pcusa.org): “Presbyterian response to the war was far from monolithic—there were Patriot, Loyalist, and neutral Presbyterians. But the majority of Church leaders supported the rebels. Twelve of fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence were Presbyterian, including the only clergyman, John Witherspoon. George Duffield of Philadelphia’s Third Presbyterian Church (today’s Old Pine Church, next door to the Presbyterian Historical Society) served as chaplain to the Continental Congress, and patriot pastors supported the war effort from their pulpits in every state. Everyday Presbyterians felt the war’s impact in their communities and houses of worship. British troops occupied Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Savannah. From New England to the Carolinas Presbyterian churches were seized to quarter troops or damaged by forces loyal to the Crown who saw the revolution as primarily a ‘Presbyterian Rebellion.’” As we celebrate our independence on the

Fourth of July and give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, let us remember the even greater freedom we have in Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians has been called the “Magna Carta of Christian Liberty.” Paul wrote about our life in Christ, “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Paul, of course, was writing about our being delivered from slavery to sin through the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Just a few verses later, however, Paul instructed, “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Paul’s advice to Christians is good advice to all of us as U.S. citizens: “Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence.” On this Fourth of July, let us recommit ourselves to use our freedom to serve others and to build a better and stronger community and nation in which all people can enjoy our country’s promise of liberty and justice for all. Happy 4th of July!

In Christ,

When we are impatient about something, we’re likely to hear, “All in good time!” The sermons will consider what it means to live as people of faith “All in God’s Time.”

July 28 Psalm 90 Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come August 4 John 2:1-12 “My hour has not yet come.” August 11 John 19:16-30 “It is finished.” August 18 2 Peter 3:1-10 “The Lord is not slow about his promise . . . with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.” August 25 Revelation 1:4 and “from him who is and who was and who Hebrews 13:8 is to come” “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Our congregation has received generous grants totaling $22,169.92 from the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for repairs to our church building as a result of Hurricane Florence in September 2018. The Building & Grounds Ministry Team has worked hard to assess wind and water damage and will begin much needed repairs soon. The presbytery and the Disaster Assistance Program have been very supportive and helpful in our recovery efforts in Duplin County. PDA has provided long-term recovery training, resiliency training, support staff, and grants to congregations. The Disaster Recovery Group of Duplin County has applied for a grant from PDA to fund a director’s position. The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program is funded in part through the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering which we take up annually on Easter Sunday.
