Dear Friends, Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! We joyfully and excitedly proclaimed the good news of Easter in our wonderful worship service on April 21. On that same day, however, we were horrified to hear about the deaths of Christians in Sri Lanka. They were celebrating Easter and the promise of life, when their lives were cut short by bombs and terror. Since then, we have grieved at another shooting at a Jewish synagogue near San Diego, in which a founding member was killed, children were injured, and the rabbi’s hands were injured. It seems as if the world pays no attention to our shout of joy, Christ is risen! Indeed, in our unison prayers of confession on Easter Sunday and the Sunday following, we admitted that, despite the good news of the resurrection, we still fall into doubt and fear and continue in the ways of death. Easter candy is on sale for half-price in the grocery stores. Easter baskets have been packed away in the attic for another year. The beautiful flowers that decorated the cross on the corner of W. Main and S. Raleigh Streets have wilted. Life goes on — and death remains a reality and challenge.

But, Easter is not over! As noted in the announcements on April 28, “The Season of Easter lasts for fifty days, from Easter Sunday through Pentecost Sunday (June 9). Easter is not simply the miracle of a dead person raised from the grave, but a celebration of power that can shatter death in order that people can freely serve the God of life.” You may remember that the Sundays in the Season of Lent are not counted in the forty days leading up to Easter. This is because every Sunday, every Lord’s Day, is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At the end of his great resurrection chapter of 1 Corinthians 15, the apostle Paul wrote about the meaning of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead for your life and mine, every day, not just on Easter Sunday: “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” In the face of death, we can confidently say “Christ is risen!” — on Easter Sunday, on every Sunday, on every day. Thanks be to God!

In Christ,

ALTERNATIVE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS STUDY IN MAY

During the month of May, the Alternative Sunday School Class will study The Theological Declaration of Barmen, one of the twelve confessions of faith in the Book of Confessions, Part I of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). “The Theological Declaration of Barmen was written by a group of church leaders in Germany to help Christians withstand the challenges of the Nazi party and of the so-called ‘German Christians,’ a popular movement that saw no conflict between Christianity and the ideals of Hitler’s National Socialism." The class meets from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. in Room 304, across from the Music Room. Join us for this interesting discussion of our faith and Jesus Christ’s ultimate claim on our lives. UPCOMING STUDY BEGINNING ON JUNE 2: Faith and Science.

April 24, 2019 Members of the Wallace Presbyterian Church, On behalf of the Wallace Fire Department, thank you so much for the delicious dinner and time of fellowship on Thursday, February 21. To be recognized and rewarded for the work we put in during Hurricane Florence meant quite a lot to our membership even though none of us really volunteers for that reason. We do what we do out of a shared love of our community and commitment to its citizens. It is our honor to serve such deserving folks like you. Thank you again for treating us to such a delicious meal. If there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask. Sincerely, Chuck Farrior, Chief
