The Automobile of the 21 st Century/L’automobile de XXI e siècle Dr. M. ELIZABETH CANNON, PEng, FCAE Professor of Geomatics Engineering University of Calgary Calgary, Alberta Dr. M. Elizabeth Cannon is a Professor in the Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary where she conducts research and teaching in the area of satellite navigation for land, air and marine applications. Elizabeth has been involved with GPS since 1984 in both industrial and academic environments and has published over 160 journal and conference papers. Elizabeth holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Acadia University as well as a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geomatics Engineering from the University of Calgary. Elizabeth is a Past President of the US Institute of Navigation and is a member of a number of Boards including the Alberta Science and Research Authority, the Alberta Ingenuity Fund, the Alberta Research Council, the National Advisory Board on Earth Sciences to the Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and the Top 40 Under 40 Board. She was also a member of the Council of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA). Elizabeth was presented the 1993 YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Science and Technology. She was also awarded the APEGGA Early Achievement Award in 1994 and the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers' Young Engineer Achievement Award in 1995. In 1998, she was selected as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. Elizabeth is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and is a Member of the Russian Academy of Navigation. This year she received the Order of the University from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University in Russia and also the Johannes Kepler Award from the US Institute of Navigation. In 1997, Elizabeth was appointed the NSERC/Petro-Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering for the Prairie Region where she works to promote science and engineering to girls. In this capacity, Elizabeth is focused on raising public awareness about opportunities for science and engineering careers in addition to conducting research with colleagues in Sociology and Education into the reasons and influencing factors for men and women to select these careers. She is also developing innovative programs, such as an email mentoring program, to encourage and retain women in science and engineering-based fields. Elizabeth is married with two children. Ms. ANNE M. COOL, CHRP Executive Vice President, Strategic Capability Development Algonquin Group Inc. One Crescent Road Huntsville, Ontario P1H 1Z6 Anne Cool is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring key Human Resource systems to meet current and planned needs, including internal development systems, performance review systems and external recruiting systems. Before assuming her position with Algonquin Automotive, Ms. Cool was Director, Human Resources Development, for the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA). This national association represents OEM producers of parts, equipment, tools, supplies and services for the worldwide automotive industry. Ms. Cool was charged with the responsibility of raising the profile of human resources issues, in particular, workforce development with industry, educators and government. Prior to joining the APMA, Cool was the Director of Human Resources for Husky Injection Molding Systems Limited, where she was involved in designing and implementing pro-active human resources initiatives to support the business. She attended a general arts program at Hollins College in Virginia and is a graduate of the Advanced Program in Human Resources Management at the University of Toronto and also successfully completed the Advanced Human Resource Executive Program at the University of Michigan, Business School Anne Cool is currently the Past-President of the Board of Directors for Skills Canada, a national not-for-profit organization whose mission is “ To promote skilled trades and technology as a first choice career option to young Canadians” Ms. Cool lives in Huntsville with her husband Philip and has two children, Rachael, who recently currently completed her Master’s Degree in Political Science at McMaster University and Ryan, who attends Huntsville High School and is an avid snowboarder and hockey player.

Mr. BRIAN A. GROSMAN, Q.C. Barrister and Solicitor Grosman, Grosman and Gale 111 Richmond Street West, Suite 800 Toronto, Ontario M5H 2H5 Brian A. Grosman, Q.C., B.A., LL.B., LL.M. is Senior Partner of the Toronto law firm of Grosman, Grosman and Gale and is recognized throughout Canada as a leading employment lawyer. He has advised hundreds of corporate employers and thousands of executive employees on the legal implications of employment disruptions. Mr. Grosman has argued some of the leading employment cases in Canada in the courts of Ontario as well as in the Supreme Court of Canada. Brian is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and continued on to receive his LLB at the UofT Law School. Subsequently, he completed his Master of Laws degree at McGill University. Brian was called to the bar of Ontario in 1962 and called to the bar of the Province of Saskatchewan in 1971. He was a teaching Fellow at McGill University and a Fellow of the New York University Institute of Comparative Criminal Law. Brian was also a Russell Sage Fellow at the University of Denver and a visiting Professor of the University of Free Berlin in Berlin Germany. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of "The Employment Bulletin: Legal Issues in the Workplace", published by Canada Law Book and has authored a number of key books:

Brian Grosman is a former Professor of Law at McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan, as well as the founding Chairman of the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan. He has lectured on the subject of employment law and executive contracts throughout Canada and the United States. His law firm has specialized in employment and labour law for over twenty years, advising corporate employers and employees on terminations, employment contracts, management and human rights. Brian has advised employers with regard to the human resource consequences of mergers, takeovers, and reorganizations, including the merger of The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and Wood Gundy.

Dr. INGE L.H. HANSSON, P.Eng. President, Hanson Technology Management 399 Naomi Crescent Mississauga, Ontario L5B 3S4 Dr. Hansson obtained the highest possible Swedish academic qualification, Docent (equivalent to the British D.Sc.), formally in Engineering Physics, with emphasis on Materials Technology, and the main part of his education, research and industrial experience has been in Applied Science and Technology and its management. In 1995, Dr. Hansson started his own international executive management consulting company, Hansson Technology Management (HTM), which activities include executive management services, organizational restructuring, executive mentoring, international technology commercialization, technology assessment, technology licensing and transfer, technology funding and capitalization, etc. In May 1996, through HTM, Dr. Hansson assumed the position of President & CEO of Gas Technology Canada (GTC), a member-supported National Cooperative Technology Development and Management organization, established in 1992. Some other activities for Hansson Technology Management include, a technology scouting contract for IPL Energy Inc. (now Enbridge) in connection with IPL’s New Product Development Program to solicit energy and service related technologies for its technology investment program, material technology advisory services for a CRADA consortium, AlCAR, developing non-heat treatable aluminum sheet alloys for the automotive industry and strategic advice to the Royal Bank in connection with its new initiative, Royal Bank Growth Co., which now has established, for example, Primaxis Technology Ventures Inc. Additionally, Dr. Hansson is supplying a number of start-up, entrepreneurial companies with strategic planning, technology assessment and initial management services on future equity based arrangements. Externally to these activities, Dr. Hansson is involved with a number of Advisory Committees and Boards of Directors. Specifically, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Ontario Centre for Materials Research (OCMR), an organization funded by the Provincial Government of Ontario. He was Vice-Chairman of the Board of Material and Manufacturing Ontario (MMO), a new provincial Centre of Excellence, which is an amalgamation of OCMR and the Manufacturing Research Corporation of Ontario (MRCO) (see MMO's webpage at www.mmo.on.ca). Dr. Hansson is presently Chair of the Minister's National Advisory Board on Energy Science and Technology for NRCan. In 1994 and 1995, Dr. Hansson was Vice President, Technology and Chief Technical Officer of Emtech Ltd. and President & CEO of Emtech Technology Centre Inc., located in Mississauga, Ontario. Until late 1993, Dr. Hansson was Research Director of Alcan International Limited’s Kingston Research and Development Centre (KRDC). His previous industrial activities (1984-86) included building up and managing the Department of Materials Technology at F.L. Smith & Co., one of the world’s leading companies in the design and construction of cement plants. Dr. Hansson’s research activities in the Laboratory of Applied Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (1973-84 and 1987-89) ranged from direct theoretical work, e.g. simulations of thermal cycles in laser welding, to experimental research of materials’ properties, e.g. cavitation erosion of construction materials.

Mr. ROBERT HINDLE, P.Eng. Senior Vice-President Giffels Associates Inc. 30 International Blvd. Toronto, Ontario M9W 5P3 Giffels Associates is Canada’s leading consulting engineering/architectural firm providing design and project management support to the automotive industry. The company is privately owned by its employees, of which there are approximately 510. Giffels Associates is Ford Motor Company’s A/E Alliance Partner for their Canadian facilities and has designed all of the Honda facilities in Alliston, Ontario, and are currently designing their new plant in Alabama, USA. In addition, Giffels designed the entire Toyota facility in Cambridge, Ontario and also work extensively for DaimlerChrysler and General Motors. Robert Hindle, in his role as Senior Vice President, directs all Giffels operations related to the automotive sector. He is a mechanical engineer, having graduated from Leeds University in UK in 1969. His career evolved in the UK working for Europe’s largest mechanical contractor, at the time, a leading consulting practice, a short spell for central government followed by five years as senior staff engineer with Imperial Chemical Industries. He emigrated to Canada in 1981, sponsored by Lavalin for whom he worked as a senior mechanical engineer on projects in Canada and overseas. Hindle joined Giffels in 1986, as Manager of Mechanical Engineering directing the mechanical design of numerous projects for Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, and various tier 1 suppliers. He was appointed Director of Project Management in 1990 and became Vice-President of the Building Design unit in 1994. He was recently appointed Senior Vice-President of Giffels Associates Limited, the traditional consulting engineering company within the Giffels Group. Robert Hindle is a Director of the Giffels Group of Companies and an Officer of Giffels Associates Limited. He has also served on the Complaints Committee of the Professional Engineers of Ontario since 1995. Mr. Hindle is also a Designated Consultant registered with Professional Engineers Ontario and is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the UK, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (UK).

Mr. JOHN NORMAN LOCKINGTON, P.Eng. Vice President, Technology Dofasco Inc. P.O. Box 2460 Hamilton, Ontario L8N 3J5 Norman Lockington was born in Peterborough, Ontario and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo with a speciality in Process Metallurgy and Bioengineering. He went on to earn a Masters in Business Administration from McMaster University in Hamilton and took further post-graduate courses in Production and Operations Management from the University of Western Ontario in London. During his education, Lockington earned a number of prestigious scholarships and was awarded the Alumni Achievement Medal from the University of Waterloo in 1994. He began his career in industry with Dofasco in 1973 having worked there as a Research Assistant during his education at university. Over the last 27 years he has held increasingly senior posts including management roles in areas such as Industrial Hygiene Engineering, Occupational Environment, Environmental Control and Occupational Environment, Environment and Utilities and Quality and Technology. Mr. Lockington was appointed Director of Technology in 1992 and assumed his present position of Vice-President, Technology in 1993. His current responsibilities include: Engineering & Maintenance Technology, Environment & Energy, Metallurgy, New Product Development, Information Systems, Process Automation, Innovation Group, Quality Systems & Manufacturing Technology, Research & Development. This involves a staff of about 1,070 people. Lockington holds corporate directorships in Baycoat Inc. (a company specializing in coil coating technology) and in IVARA Inc., which produces maintenance management systems and software for heavy industry. Reflecting his expertise in environmental and health and safety issues Mr. Lockington is a member of a number of professional and service organizations including: International Iron & Steel Institute in Brussels (Chairman - Committee on Technology (2002)), Past Chairman - Committee on Environmental Affairs, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (Past Chairman – Environment), the Canadian Manufacturers' Association (Past Chairman – Environment), the Association of Iron & Steel Engineers (President – 2001), the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI - Past Chairman - Occupational Safety and Health and a Member of the Committee on Manufacturing Technology), American Industrial Hygiene Association (Founding Chairman, Ontario Section), Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA - Past Director – Ontario), the Society of Automotive Engineers (Member) and the Sustainable Enterprise Academy (Member of the Advisory Board). Mr. Lockington is also active in his community having served the Burlington, Hamilton-Wentworth United Way as Campaign Chairman in 1987 and the Nelson Youth Centres also as a Chairman.

Mr. GERARD (GERRY) H. LUKASSEN Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Commerce Court West, 3rd Floor Toronto, Ontario M5L 1A2 Mr. Gerry Lukassen is Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, CIBC. Commercial Banking provides a full range of financial services to businesses, institutions and government with revenues in the $5-500 million range. Products include financing, financial advisory, mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate and mezzanine finance, cash and treasury management, receivables and payables management and trade finance delivered through over 60 offices across Canada and several electronic channels. Mr. Lukassen was born in the Netherlands and began his career at CIBC in 1965. He held a number of positions in the bank’s domestic operations before being appointed Vice President, Metropolitan Toronto East in 1986. In 1988 he became Senior Vice President, Ontario East & North and in 1990, Senior Vice President, Independent Business, in which position he was responsible for CIBC’s services to the small business sector. In 1995 he assumed his current position of Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking. His current responsibilities include administration, credit and operational risk, and corporate governance for the 500 professionals in the Commercial Banking team. He is also involved in business and strategic planning and new product development and delivery. Mr. Lukassen has served on the executive of a number of local community and business organizations, including as Chairman of the Canadian Bankers Association Independent Business Committee. He is currently a member of the Toronto Board of Trade, a member of the Executive Council of The Ontario Chamber of Commerce and a Director of Materials and Manufacturing Ontario. He and his wife, Ann, live in Aurora, Ontario.

Mr. JAMES H. MILLER Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs Honda Canada Inc. 715 Milner Ave. Scarborough, Ontario M1B 2K8 Mr. Miller has been in the automotive industry since 1964 when he started with the Ford Motor Company in the Parts and Accessory area, then moved into the Sales Division. In 1969 he joined American Motors Corporation. Assuming increasingly senior roles over the next 14 years he became the Director of Sales Operations, which he viewed as a great learning experience. In 1983 when he joined Honda, in anticipation of starting up the Acura Division of the Company. “It is not often a new free-standing division with unique products is started.” He says it had its rewards and its frustrations, but it was truly gratifying to see the first vehicle delivered. Since then Mr. Miller has gone on to become Vice President and then Senior Vice President of Automobile Marketing for Honda and Acura and is now the Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs. In his years in the automobile industry Mr. Miller has seen many trends within the industry, not the least of which is Honda becoming a major automotive manufacturer in Canada and the United States.

Dr. PETER GEORGE, C.M. President and Vice-Chancellor, McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L7 Dr. Peter George is a well-known scholar and educator, with extensive experience in senior academic administrative and executive positions. He was appointed President and Vice-Chancellor of McMaster University, on July 1, 1995. Dr. George received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto. He joined McMaster University's faculty in 1965 and was promoted to full professorship in 1980. He was the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at McMaster University between 1974 and 1979, and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1980 until 1989. He served as President of the Council of Ontario Universities from 1991-1995. During his four years as President of COU, Dr. George developed both a mission statement and a strategic management plan for the organization, and motivated the senior management group to develop a proactive advocacy stance that has placed the Council on the leading edge of university concerns in Canada. An economist with strong interdisciplinary interests, Dr. George is the author of many publications. His recent research interests include the impacts of resource-based development on native people, community development, and the environment in Northern Ontario, and the study of wealth accumulation and distribution in late nineteenth-century Wentworth County. A Member of the Order of Canada, Dr. George has received a number of awards for innovative educational and community activities, and has earned a strong reputation for his forthright views on higher education and its contributions to economic and social renewal. He continues to write and speak on issues in the management and impact of higher education. His public service contributions include membership on the Ontario Council on University Affairs from 1987-1991, Co-chair of the Nursing Education Implementation Committee, 1999, and Chair of the Expert Panel on Health Human Resources, 2000. Dr. George is active in both community and voluntary organizations and is currently a Board Member of the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Wellness Council of Canada, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, and the Hamilton Utilities Commission, among others. He serves as a Board member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and as a trustee of the University of Sharjah. An avid angler and aspiring golfer, he is married to the Reverend Allison Barrett, has one son and one daughter, and six grandchildren, and lives on the University campus in Hamilton.

M. JEAN-PAUL GOURDEAU, C.M., ing., FCAE Président de Conseil École Polytechnique de Montréal C.P. 6079, succ. Centre-ville Montréal, Québec H3C 3A7 M. Jean-Paul Gourdeau, CM, M.Sc., ing. was educated at the Université Laval and École Polytechnique de Montréal where he earned a B.Sc. in Engineering in 1951. He went on to earn an M.Sc. from Harvard and followed this with studies at the Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Centre, Cincinnati (1954). He began his engineering career with the Québec Department of Health, where he was employed as a Technical Consultant responsible for studies and reports to municipal authorities on environmental control questions. He joined the firm of Surveyer, Nenniger & Chênevert Inc. (SNC) as Chief Engineer of the Municipal Division in 1961 and became the Director of Engineering in 1965. Gourdeau was promoted to Vice-President of Operations, a role in which he served from 1966-72 when he was promoted to Executive Vice-President. In 1975 he became President and Chief Operating Officer of the SNC Group and was made President and Chief Executive Officer in 1982. In 1986 he was once again promoted to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and served as Chairman of the Board from 1989-1993. In 1993 he became Chairman of École Polytechnique de Montréal, a role he still holds. M. Gourdeau is a Director of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (Past President), the Pulp & Paper Research Institute of Canada and the Société d'édition de la revue Forces. He holds a number of professional affiliations including being a licensee of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Association québécoise des techniques de l'eau (Past President), the Canadian Export Association (Past Chairman) and the Canadian Association of Consulting Engineers (Past President). M. Gourdeau is a Member of the Order of Canada (1990) and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Concordia University (1989). He has also been honoured with the following awards: McGill Management Achievement Award, McGill University (1987); "Honneur au Mérite", École Polytechnique (1986); "Gloire de l'Escolle", Université Laval (1985); Arthur Sidney Bedell Award from the Water Pollution Control Federation of Washington, D.C., for service to the Canadian Institute of Pollution Control (1971). Jean-Paul Gourdeau is married to Jeannine and they have four children (Pierre, Louis, Lucie and Joanne). Dr. ROSS H. PAUL President and Vice-Chancellor The University of Windsor 401 Sunset Avenue WINDSOR, Ontario N9B 3P4 Dr. Ross H. Paul came to the University of Windsor as its fifth President early in 1998 immediately after serving almost seven years as President of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. A bilingual native of Montreal, Dr. Paul is a graduate of Bishop’s University (B.A., Mathematics and Economics, 1964), McGill University (M.A., Educational Administration, 1968) and the University of London, England (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, 1965; Ph.D., 1973). He has teaching and administrative experience at all levels of education, starting his career as a teacher at Montreal’s Lower Canada College. After a stint at Bishop’s University, where he was Alumni Secretary and lecturer in the Graduate School of Education (1969-71) and following completion of his doctorate in London, he spent seven years at Dawson College in Montreal where he held the positions of Dean of Arts and Academic Dean. Beginning in 1980, Dr. Paul spent 11 years at Alberta’s Athabasca University, 10 as Vice-President Academic and one as Acting President before assuming the Presidency at Laurentian in 1991. Dr. Paul is an author, best known for his 1990 book, Open Learning and Open Management: Leadership and Integrity in Distance Education. He is a frequent contributor of book chapters and journal articles on distance education and the management of technology and higher learning. Currently immediate past Chair of the Board of World University Service of Canada (WUSC), Dr. Paul has long been active in the Council of Ontario Universities, member of the Board of Directors of the Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce, and previously served as the founding President of CREAD, a distance education consortium for all of the Americas, and as Vice-President (North America) for the International Council of Distance Education (ICDE). He has traveled and consulted widely on management and distance education issues, notably through CIDA projects in Thailand, China and Sri Lanka; comparative education tours of the former Soviet Union, Israel (two) and the United States (two); as a visiting professor in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and through conference and speaking engagements throughout Europe and Latin America. For his widespread community activities, he was awarded the Governor General’s Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation in 1992. A lover of music and theatre, Dr. Paul has been creator, director, actor and pianist in a variety of musical revues and sees at least 25 plays annually at Stratford, Niagara-on-the-Lake, London’s West End, Toronto, the University of Windsor and various fringe and other theatre festivals. He enjoys squash, old-timers hockey and regular fitness training. He is married to Jane Brindley, a psychologist with an international reputation in distance education, who shares his love of theatre, and has two sons, David and Jonathan.

Mr. JOHN R. McDOUGALL, P.Eng., FCAE Managing Director and CEO Alberta Research Council 250 Karl Clark Road Edmonton, Alberta T6N 1E4 John McDougall has served as Managing Director and CEO of the Alberta Research Council since the fall of 1997. He is also President and General Manager of McDougall & Secord, Limited; Chairman of D.B. Robinson & Associates; and a Director of PFB Corporation. Born and raised in Edmonton, Mr. McDougall received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1967. He also completed a number of postgraduate courses in environmental engineering. An active participant in professional and community affairs, Mr. McDougall is a member of the Management Board of the Alberta Science and Research Authority; a member of the Conference Board of Canada Leaders’ Forum on Innovation; and a Director of the Alberta Agriculture Research Institute. He is also the Past-President of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, APEGGA and the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. John is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers, Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the 8 Field Engineer Regiment, honorary life member of APEGGA and honorary member of the Mexican College of Civil Engineers. He has served as an advisor to federal and provincial governments on economic development, construction, trade, technology and human resources. Dr. BRYNE B. PURCHASE Deputy Minister of Energy, Science and Technology Government of Ontario Hearst Block 4th, 900 Bay St. Toronto, Ontario M7A 2E1 The distinguished career in economics of Dr. Bryne Purchase spans over 30 years. He has held a variety of positions in both the public and private sectors, specializing in studies in public policy and the delivery of programs. He began his Ontario government career in 1975 with the Ministry of Treasury and Economics as an economist, advancing to Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Economist in the Office of Economic Policy (1984-88) in the same ministry. He also served in New York as Senior Counselor, Economic Affairs (1983) where he established a monitoring system on U.S. state and federal economic and trade policy issues of concern to the Ontario government. Dr. Purchase was a principal and partner of Gordon Ritchie (1989-90) in Strategico, a corporate strategy and policy consulting company. In 1990, he was with the C.D. Howe Institute and in 1991-92 with the Economic Council of Canada. From 1992-95 he was Research Director of the Government and Competitiveness Project for the Canadian federal government studying mechanisms to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and innovativeness of government and its organizations. During this time, Dr. Purchase began his association with the university community. He was a Senior Fellow in the School of Public Policy Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Most recently, he was Chair of the Executive and Professional Program at the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s and President of SAGES (Strategic Analysis Group in Economics and Statistics), a firm specializing in economic and statistical analysis. Dr. Purchase returned to the Ontario government in 1998, accepting the position of Deputy Minister of Finance, and served in the capacity until August 2000 when he assumed the position of Deputy Minister of Energy, Science and Technology. He is a director of the Ontario Innovation Trust, the Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation, Ontario Superbuild Corporation and the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund. A PhD graduate in Economics from the University of Toronto, Dr. Purchase is the author of seven publications relating to economics and competitiveness, and the recipient of six academic honours. In addition to his professional and academic credentials, he is a former Director of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, the Canada-US Business Association and the Strategic Leadership Forum, Ottawa Chapter.

Mr. RONALD C. (RON) WATKINS Director General – Aerospace and Automotive Branch Industry Canada 235 Queens St. – 6th Floor Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0H5 Mr. Watkins is the Director General of the Aerospace and Automotive Branch of Industry Canada. This branch was created in July 2000 as a merger of the department’s Aerospace and Defence Branch, which Mr. Watkins headed, and the Automotive and Transportation Industries Branch. The Aerospace and Automotive Branch is responsible for policies to improve the growth and international competitiveness of the Canadian aerospace, automotive, and related industries, through trade, technology, and investment-related initiatives. It is also the focal point for the government’s industrial and regional benefits policies related to government procurement. Previously, Mr. Watkins was Director General of the International Business Branch of Industry Canada, responsible for developing the department’s overall strategies and annual plans for trade promotion and investment attraction in Canada. The branch also led the department’s international trade, investment, and technology policies for the industrial and service industries. This included primary departmental responsibilities related to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as well as NAFTA, APEC, and other bilateral trade and industrial cooperation arrangements. Mr. Watkins has also headed the department’s branches responsible for the information technologies and service industries. In addition to his extensive management experience in the Canadian government, he also participated for two years in an executive exchange program with IBM, serving as Program Director in its corporate strategy department at Armonk, N.Y. Mr. Watkins has a M.A. in economics, and has completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School. Mr. Watkins and his wife Kathy live in Ottawa with their son (Charles) and daughter (Amy).

Dr. PETER R. FRISE, P.Eng., FCAE Professor, AUTO21 Program Leader and NSERC/DaimlerChrysler Canada Industrial Research Chair in Mechanical Design University of Windsor, 401 Sunset Ave. Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4 Dr. Peter Frise holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston and a Ph.D., also in mechanical engineering, from Carleton University in Ottawa. His industrial experience includes work in Nigeria as an oil well Wireline Logging Engineer for Schlumberger International Services and a position at Husky Injection Molding Systems in Bolton, Ontario where he worked as an R&D hydraulics engineer and later as an engineering group leader before beginning his Ph.D. in fatigue of offshore oilrigs at Carleton University in 1985. In 1988 Frise joined the faculty at Carleton and in 1993 he became one of very few Canadians to be honoured by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) with their Ralph R. Teetor Engineering Education Award. Dr. Frise is presently Professor and DaimlerChrysler Canada/NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Mechanical Design at the University of Windsor. He is also the Program Leader of AUTO21, a newly funded Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) on the Automobile of the 21st Century. Since joining the University of Windsor, he has worked on an initiative to develop a new stream in Automotive Engineering at the University of Windsor. This program compliments his strong interest in enhancing mechanical design education in Canada and meshes very well with his mandate as Canada’s first NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Design Engineering. He has published a number of articles on metal fatigue, non-destructive testing methods, mechanical design methodology and engineering education and has two patents presently pending including one on the design of a new attitude control system for small satellites and another on the design of a new type of self-destructing, single-use-only syringe for use by the World Health Organization (WHO) in immunization programs in the Third World. Dr. Frise has been a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) since 1984 and a PEO Certificate of Authorization holder since 1992. He is a Lieutenant Governor-in-Council Appointee to PEO Council and is a member of the Complaints Committee. His consulting work has included design projects and reviews in several industries and the delivery of courses in design techniques. In addition to serving as a PEO Councillor, his volunteer work for his profession has included service as chair of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Working Group for a Vision for the Future of the Engineering Profession as well as being the chair of the PEO Fundamental Review Task Group on Multidisciplinary and Emerging Areas of Engineering Practice. In May of 2000, Frise was elected as Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in recognition of his professional contributions and accomplishments.

Dr. ALAIN CANUEL Program Officer Networks Centres of Excellence Directorate 350 Albert Street, 15th Floor Ottawa, ON K1A 1H5 Dr. Alain Canuel has been working as a Program Officer with the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program since 1998. His responsibilities include the management and coordination of four networks – HEALNet, Wood-Pulps, CANVAC and of course AUTO21. Prior to joining the NCE Program, he worked for eight years as a Team Leader in the Research Grants and Fellowship Division as well as the Strategic Grants Division with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). He also served on a number of committees and interdisciplinary programs including the Eco-Research Program launched by the three granting agencies and Environment Canada in 1991. In 1996, Alain moved to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) where he worked as Team Leader of the Engineering Team in the Research Grants Division. An active participant in professional and community affairs, Dr. Canuel is Secretary-Treasurer for the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association and Board member for the Fédération sur le traitement des langues naturelles. He is also member of the Sigma-Xi, the Scientific Research Society and the History of Philosophy and Science Association. As lecturer, he taught a variety of courses on the subject of “History of Technology and Society” with the University of Ottawa, Université du Québec à Montréal, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Université du Québec à Hull, and Concordia University. He also published in refereed journals on the history of technology which included subjects such as submarine cable, wireless telegraphy, and radio broadcasting. Alain Canuel obtained a B.A. in French Literature from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in 1977 and an M.Sc. in Communications from the Université de Montréal in 1982. He also received his Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal in 1988 for his research in international radio broadcasting. He continued his post-doctoral studies at McGill University for two years before joining the federal civil service.

MR. WILLIAM (BILL) WOODWARD Managing Director AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence University of Windsor 401 Sunset Avenue Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4 Mr. Bill Woodward was appointed the Managing Director of AUTO21 in August 2001. Prior to his appointment with AUTO21, Mr. Woodward was employed as the Vice President of Operations with International Datashare Corp., a data processing and software development firm serving the international petroleum industry. Mr. Woodward was instrumental in facilitating the development of leading edge systems technology for the delivery of the firm’s “GeoOffice” suite of products to users throughout North America. Before moving to IDC, Mr. Woodward worked with the Province of Alberta for 11 years as a manager and senior consultant specializing in financial management, organizational consulting, strategic planning and policy development. Mr. Woodward was initially hired as a consultant with Management and Financial Services and was subsequently appointed Assistant Director of the Arts Branch. In addition to program development and delivery, Mr. Woodward assisted the Branch with the development of their data management and systems capacity. He was also actively involved in assisting the Alberta Foundation for the Arts with program and policy development. In 1991, Mr. Woodward accepted the opportunity of working in Calgary with the Alberta Multiculturalism Commission focusing on strategic planning and policy development. During his time with the provincial government he was also engaged in developing collaborative initiatives with and between educational institutions including post secondary institutions and public school systems. Prior to his tenure with the provincial government, Mr. Woodward served as the Managing Partner with P.B.S. Media Design Ltd., a communications production company, specializing in the development and management of interpretive and communications programs for the petroleum and development industries. Mr. Woodward is a former Vice President of the American Marketing Association and has maintained an active role in community service through a number local, regional and national organizations. Mr. Woodward’s undergraduate and graduate degrees were both earned at the University of Calgary.
