Mr. Godsey’s English11P class recently
received a mention in the Wall Street Journal.
Using standards-based grading and the new project-based
learning (PBL), he found that the use of Serial as a primary text
was a perfect fit. Serial is a contemporary podcast that soon
became the most popular podcast of all time. The story be-
comes a real-life murder mystery in which the students could
literally participate (as detectives). Please click here to read
the article. Slate.com did an article dedicated to Mr. Godsey’s
class as well as the New Times in San Luis Obispo.
Furthermore, the experience led to some of Mr. God-
sey’s students and Mr. Godsey collaborating with other classes
around the country who are doing the same thing — including
the high school where the story took place.
The MB Art Association is now granting scholarships
once a year for teachers to purchase supplies or equipment for
the classroom. Each teacher who applies must submit a pro-
posal to the Art Association, agree to hold an art show in their
classroom, and submit ten pieces of art to the Art Association
for the Student Art Show in May. Ms. Osborne submitted a
request for the painting class; Ms. Moore and Ms. Salio re-
quested money to replace broken cameras. Each teacher was
awarded $1,000. Thank you, Morro Bay Art Association!
The science department has been awarded $10,000
by PG&E through the PG&E Bright Ideas Grant. The depart-
ment will use the money to buy equipment students need to
work on Energy and the Environment Project-Based Lessons.
Projects will involve the engineering design and build
of wave energy converters, wind turbines, solar thermal and
solar electric modules, etc.

COMING UP AT MBHS . . .
ZOMBIE PROM
Starting March 5 The Pirate Players have been hard at work
since mid-September preparing one big musical this
year. Zombie Prom, a modern satire of the 1950's,
has a cast of 18 plus a few dedicated students work-
ing as the production crew.
The play takes place at Enrico Fermi High
School where the students are trained to be cheerful
and obedient even while practicing nuclear drills in
case "the Russians come to incinerate your parents
and their shiny Buicks." Toffee (Allie Gutwein), the
shining star at school, falls in love with a newcomer
Jonny (Daniel Greenblat), whom the principal Miss
Strict (Addy Cota) deems a trouble-maker. After Tof-
fee is forced to break up with him, Jonny commits sui-
cide by leaping into the neighboring nuclear reactor.
But her love brings him back from the dead, now a
zombie, and the issue of equal rights is raised. Aided
by the local sleazy newsman Eddie Flagrante
(Raymond Martinez), Jonny fights for his right to re-
turn to school and attend the prom. Meanwhile, the
other students slowly begin to think for themselves
and be aware of more important things than just the
theme for the prom. Candy (Lia Fagan), Coco
(Maddie Fugle), and Ginger (Miranda Stevenson)
are worried for their friend Toffee, but Jonny's friends
Jake (Mark Olson), Joey (Sterling Gragg), and Josh
(Isaac Epstein) push for acceptance. The chorus
plays various teen and adult roles: Kathleen Thomp-
son, Richard Andrus, Kyla Finger, K.B. Bora,
Emma Suffia, Evan Brown, Allyssa Coloma, and
Bryce Schultz. Jeff Raach is the student assistant
director and Lucas Epstein is set and sound wizard.
Generous donations from TEACh Foundation
and Blue and White have helped fund the rental of the
music, LED stage lights, and costumes.
Zombie Prom runs Thursday - Saturday,
March 5-7 starting at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. It is filled
with fun 50's style music and dancing. Tickets are $8
with ASB card and $9 general admission.
