Addition is the process of putting items together and counting the total number in the set.
If we have 2 apples and someone gives us
3 more, we end up with a total of 5
apples.
2 apples
1 2
3 4 5
+ 3 apples
= 5 apples
2 apples
+ 3 more apples
5 apples
1 2 3 4 5
2 apples + 3 apples
equals 5 apples in all
If we need 6 apples for a pie, we might
use 4 red apples and 2 yellow apples. This would give us a total
of 6 apples.
1 2 3 4
4 red apples
5 6 + 2 yellow apples
= 6 apples
4 red apples
+ 2 yellow apples
6 apples
1 2 3 4 5 6
4 red apples + 2 yellow apples
equals 6 apples in all
