Traditional power backup solutions that rely on Batteries cannot offer the backup required for network reliability due to their limited operation time. The DPS Two Way Backup Unit represents the most advanced solution available for power backup. The DPS system is based on the strategic placement of intelligent power management devices throughout the cable network. Protection against power loss due to utility outages is managed by redirecting power between distant locations (on the electricity grid) utilizing the existing coaxial network or power cables. Typically mounted in pairs, the DPS devices “toggle” available power between two adjacent locations, such as optical nodes, trunk amplifiers, and line extender clusters. Power in the two- way DPS device is redirected from the "normally" powered area to the area subject to power outage. During normal mode of operation, when there is no power outage at either end of the pair, the DPS devices are quiescent (dormant) and act as power blocks to the other side. DPS's power redundancy protects all optical nodes, trunk amplifiers and line extenders, and is completely “ONLINE”. This ensures no signal or data interruption during operation. VoIP, internet/data, and video broadcasting services require high reliability with no “run time” limitations in case of power failure.

Power in the two-way DPS device is redirected from the "normally" powered area to the area subject to power outage.

DPS's current measurement capability enables network managers to predict various problems in the network, even before equipment failure. Among the problems detected by DPS monitoring is unstable current, which indicates a defective trunk amplifier or overheating of the power supply. Unstable current can also indicate bad contacts, with safety implications.

The DPS measurement capabilities were developed in cooperation with leading cable operators and according to their specifications. DPS uses a single monitoring connector for all four ports in conjunction with competing products that use four single connectors (one per port). The current measurement performed by DPS has many advantages over competitor monitoring solutions using voltage measurement, which can only indicate on/off status.

The DPS Return-On-Investment (ROI) is much faster than battery-based solutions since it can be easily installed by the company technician and no further maintenance is needed. DPS is an environmental friendly device that improves reliability and eliminates the cost associated with battery handling.
