Judging blue ribbon winners starts with images that were already judged to have outstanding characteristics in impact, composition and technical quality.  Finding the 1st, 2nd and 3rd "Best Image Of The Year" among them, means looking for extra values in the image content and/or presentation.

Thus I looked at the task as finding the images which are not just virtually flawless in the 3 judged characteristics, but as a result of their integrated use of the those characteristics deliver something extra to the viewers.

“It is one thing to composite 4 or 5 guitars into a single image and another to make that image sing.  Though this image does not sing for our ears, the harmonious composition is candy for the eyes and soothing for the mind.  If there was an explicit numerical factor to reward for "technical difficulties", that number would be very high for this image.  Nevertheless the impression is an effortless implementation.   The overall resulting impact is soft yet very strong, and portrays the musician powerfully in a music filled environment.”

“This image is telling a story which forces the viewer to experience all the elements of the collage.  The Technical aspects are well appointed.  The viewer is intrigued enough to want to learn the whole story behind the image.”

“Beautifully presented subject:The guitar player - He is clearly the main subject.Love the circular patterns repeated throughout and the movement and excitement created by the brush strokes.”

"The dominant strength of this image is in its excellent use of the entire tonal range for this very high dynamic range image, while providing fine graduations in the details.  However, that is somewhat masked by the strong red tint, competing for dominance."

“This image has a WOW factor on Impact. The warm, red color adds drama over the entire photo, and the water drops maintain the delicate nature of the feather.  Awesome photography!”

“Very unusual presentation of a common object with the reds & the drops.Wonderful separation of each spine.Moves the eye in a slightly upward direction.”

“A lovely, romantic and classic setting with warm red tones that offers an invitation to visit France and enjoy the atmosphere. The lighting and lines add to the overall composition by tying all of the elements together in a warm glow.”

“What elevates this image over even high quality magazine images,is how this image evokes in the viewer a strong feeling of being there.  The combination of perfect lighting, good composition, variations between muted and vivid complementary colors coupled with excellent technical precision, perfectly recreates the mood of an outdoor Euro restaurant in the early evening, arranged to invite the passerby.”

“Very inviting setting. Good diagonal line along the step, nice red & yellow as striking colors. The distribution of light all around the view is fabulous with strong vertical lines framing out the piece ( the menu & the dark green exterior on the left). Sharp, uncluttered, clean post- processing.”
